  • Tonic Trouble is a 1999 action-adventure game developed by Ubi Soft Montreal and published by Ubi Soft. The game follows janitor Ed, who drops a container of unidentified fluid from his spaceship to Earth, transforming the planet into a mutated version of itself. Drunkard Grögh drinks from the container and is granted powers that lead him to conquer Earth. Assuming the role of Ed, the player is tasked with solving puzzles and defeating enemies to acquire the tools to conquer Grögh and repossess the container to create an antidote.

    You touched on an important point here - that now that we are adults with limited time and real-world responsibilites, an easy short game is something that many of us actually prefer (I know I do). I'm about to turn 40 and I still play through an average of one new N64 game a year - but as much as I love the N64 and love finding 'new' games that I haven't played before on it - I can't afford to put 20 hours into a game any more. Oh, and for anyone still reading this far the last 'new' game I played all the way through and loved was 'Winback' - fantastic game! - David

    You're on a roll with new content! I remember Tonic Trouble getting reviewed in N64 Magazine. It was one of those games where avoiding it was obvious. Got to say the graphics have aged well. But it seems like another one of those awkward 3D platformer shifts, only Nintendo and Rare really mastered them on the N64.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  Před 7 měsíci +8

      I think in a way the graphical style is a saving grace with many of Ubisoft’s games from the era.

    • @Nutty151
      @Nutty151 Před 7 měsíci +2

      This game seems ok, but the N64 library was already over-saturated with 3D platformers as it was. Did we really need yet ANOTHER one? On the flipside, the N64 was starving for more fighting games and RPG's, that's where more developers should have put their focus on.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@Nutty151 agreed. However this was announced pretty much from the start of the n64 so at that time it was hard to be aware of just how significant the console would become for the platform game genre

    • @Nutty151
      @Nutty151 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@n64glennplant Very true. Mario 64 changed the rules of the game. Maybe the developer should have transformed the game into another genre once it entered development hell. But perhaps that was too costly, even more time consuming, or something else? Either way, this game just ended up being one of the rest.

    A lot of these old N64 platformers are on the easy side. Devs couldn't fill the screen full of enemies for the player to dodge, jump over, etc, so the levels always felt kind of sparse and empty. That said, I have an affinity for these old games. They don't really make 'em like this anymore. Mario Odyssey was a big hit - I didn't see what other people saw, apparently. I thought it was an okay Mario game, but I felt like I HAD to play through it more than I WANTED to play through it. It was well-designed and all that, I just felt the levels were too big. I prefer the smaller playgrounds in Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. At any rate, I miss the days of the classic 3D platformer.

      @@n64glennplant It just didn't feel like a Mario game to me. Maybe it's because I'm a couple years away from 50 and I prefer to play retro games. Zelda is a series that I HAD to play every time a new game was released, but the last console Zelda game I played was Twilight Princess. I guess I played the remake of Link's Awakening, but that was an old Gameboy game that was "ported" to the Switch. It was actually pretty fun - way better than Twilight Princess in my opinion.

    I remember getting this years later when I was collecting for the N64 and didn't hate it just found it a bit on the easy side and it felt too much like an early version of Rayman 2 unfortunately it was worse in every way. If this came out two years earlier it probably would have been better received but coming out less than 6 months before a game that used the same engine and was superior in every way makes me wonder why Ubisoft didn't do more to make it more than just seem like a copy of their own game that actually came out after. If I recall the camera is also not as refined as it was in Rayman 2 and often kept shaking in certain spots.

    I love Tonic Trouble, though the PC version (which is the one I usually play myself) is much better than the N64 version. There's also a set of PC beta pre-releases labeled the "Special Edition", which feature stuff like tank controls, a dynamic soundtrack, much bigger and more immersive (albeit emptier) levels, and of course the expected beta version jank. My favorite versions are the PC release and special editions.
