    So because the Wifi and Bluetooth use the SD IO interface, it would be fastest to use the Wifi when transferring files from the network to say an external USB HDD? As opposed to using the Ethernet which shares the USB controller?

    • @TheRaspberryPiGuy
      @TheRaspberryPiGuy  Před 8 lety +4

      +Joshimuz I did not make this clear enough in my video: the Bluetooth works over UART. The WiFi uses the SDIO interface, but a different one to the uSD card on the board. I am not sure whether transferring a file over WiFi would be better than transferring over Ethernet - excellent question. Unfortunately I have terrible country video and am in a poor place to test!

    • @Joshimuz
      @Joshimuz Před 8 lety +1

      Alright thanks for the response, I will have to test it for myself when I receive mine on Monday :D

    • @Wren6991
      @Wren6991 Před 8 lety

      +TheRaspberryPiGuy From my testing a few months back I got about 50Mbps on my college WiFi, which is faster than I got over ethernet. Bear in mind this was with an external antenna, not the chip antenna that the Pi ships with.
      The Arasan SD controller is as far as I know being driven at its stock freq of 50MHz, for 200Mbps max theoretical bandwidth, although some bandwidth is lost to commands. Whether this is practically achievable, I leave to someone with faster WiFi than me :p

    • @Wren6991
      @Wren6991 Před 8 lety

      +TheRaspberryPiGuy Also a very small correction, the SD card is controlled by an SD interface, not SDIO. SDIO is more or less a superset of SD. Historically Pis have been using the Arasan controller (SDIO + SD) to communicate with the uSD card. This controller is confusingly called bcm2835-mmc in the code -- MMC being a predecessor to the SD standard.
      However, when the 43438 was added, we needed the Arasan controller for its SDIO capabilities. In response to this Phil dusted off the Broadcom "home grown" controller (again, confusingly called bcm2835-sdhost) which is a less functional controller than the Arasan device. sdhost is SD only, and is now used to control the uSD card.

    I just bought the 2b a few days ago. I don't think this is one of those things you only buy one of. So not disappointed like I would be in a $500 PC if the same things happened. I am actually really happy to know there is now a newer model out there.

    Hey TheRaspberryPiGuy could you test if the new Raspberry Pi 3 can handle moonlight with 1080p, 60 frames per second? As the Pi3 has official support for 1080p60 now it should be able to handle it! And if it can handle it through the built-in WiFi that would be awesome!

  • @neogen23
    @neogen23 Před 8 lety

    I thought about posting at the blog announcement on the RPi Foundation page but I guess my question would be lost in the sea of comments. I bought a RPi 2 in the summer and I'm perfectly happy with it as a media center and a couple of other things but I wouldn't recommend it as a desktop replacement.
    My question is this: is the RPi 3 powerful enough to be used as a desktop replacement for an elderly couple? That means it has to be fast enough for everyday browsing, eg. news sites, able to play youtube videos even in fullscreen, skype even and some basic office work (through libreoffice). Is it there yet or should I wait for the RPi 4? Bear in mind that is will replace a 2003 Athlon XP 3000+ based PC (don't laugh), noisy as hell, that struggles already with the tasks mentioned above, but the whole point is to move to something better performance wise, not just quiet or power efficient.
    Thanks! Any comments are welcome

    • @NickYoung_Original
      @NickYoung_Original Před 8 lety

      From the other reviews and the play I've had with it... I'd say yes. This is a desktop replacement.
      just bear in mind there's no app store for this, but if core apps are okay then it's good to go.

    Why can't they make two versions. Another one with higher specifications: More RAM to run true 64 bit OS, USB-C, Gigabit Ethernet, faster processor and higher specced graphics chip. I wouldn't mind paying more to have those in a small form factor unit.

    Nice to see that, unlike the Pi Zero, there's plenty of stock around - RS had 23,000 of them when I looked. Mine's on the way - I reckon the Pi 3 is the first Pi to be considered a credible general purpose computer., as well as a wonderful hobbyist platform.

    • @sadiporter2966
      @sadiporter2966 Před 8 lety

      +Kevin Partner I would hardly say it is a credible general purpose computer due to its low 1GB of ram. Modern websites especially video websites take up a lot of ram these days. 2GB would be fairly usable, 4GB would be very usable.

    This is great but I'm a little bummed. I just purchased 50 Pi 2's for my project when I could have had the Pi 3's for the same price with wifi, bluetooth and more speed. The timing just sucks. Oh well. My only wish for the Pi at this point is a barrel power connecter. The mini usb power port is not as reliable.

      It was unavoidable. The project had a deadline which just finished today funny enough. I was unaware of the birthday release dates as I was also unaware of the Pi birthday. I moved from Beaglebone's to Pi's in this latest project. The Pi 2's are working admirably so I can't complain. Having been in the computing industry since 1980 I've been through this scenario almost yearly. Its just the way the cookie crumbles. Now I just have to wait for my Pi 3 to arrive and I'll be using them on my next project.

    • @greenbag7787
      @greenbag7787 Před 8 lety

      +SonicMastr500 No.. every WiFi chip that's "enclosed", usually has an external antenna. Does the WiFi card in a pc case just use the onboard chip? No.. it has an external antenna. Hell.. the WiFi chip on the new RPi3 isn't even on the same edge as the peripheral connectors.. ie: power adapter. I could then easily cut a hole for the chip.. as a case manufacturer will no doubt do for the new Pi, but it has to be on the end of the board, where the microsd card is. Which means a specially fitted case. Blah. It's no use to me positioned where it is.. not without an antenna jack.

    Hey just a heads up to all Pie friends ... DO NOT BUY Pimoroni kits for the PI3 They are pushing old power supplies designed for the old pies set at 2.0 amp instead of 2.5 . The new pie will fail and freeze due to this if not kept at modest settings ie same as raspberry pi 2. They will not resolve this issue they are just going to take your money and get the next guy while they stock the proper updated supplies designed for pie3 officially to sale on the side. I have reached out to Pimoroni for customer support i got insulted on the definition of a milliamp. and told it would work... so does using a paperclip to get a screw out but its a bi*** as i live in the usa it is actually hard to find these 2.5 supplies , one of the reasons i decided to order from them.. To get the officially speced supplie for the pie.. AS always element 14 has been great helping me with this issue..

I mean, they sent so few of the "free" ones to the US with MagPi magazine that they were sold out at every Barnes and Nobles bookstore within 50 miles of me before I even knew they hit the stands. I think I will stick with my Pi2 for now.

      Yeah, it can be hard to find them for the MSRP right after release, as they usually do not produce enough to meet the demand. Supply and Demand dictates that these stores raise the prices, which is what happens. Give it a few weeks or months and every store will be selling at or less than $35.
