    I actually just got an rPi2 for Christmas for a RetroPie build. I would love to see how the rPi3 handles a similar setup with ps1/dc/n64 games. I also wouldn't mind seeing if it works well enough for a low-traffic personal WordPress server, let's say for a home-served, single-page resume site.

    Finally managed to buy one. Need to compile a real-time version of CRUX Linux kernel to make a backup/rear view camera for my van. It just needs to capture, compress and send the image over an ethernet cable where it can be picked up by the Pi 4 in the front. Everything else can be handled by Arduinos.

    RPi 3 is awesome! For the d-bags posting shit in comments, RPi, might seem unrelated to Android, but it can help you build something as awesome as an home automation system, a remote controlled bot, and frankly anything, which can even be connected to your 'Android' app!

    A Pi 3 will be excellent for a laptop replacement, at least in terms of mobility, when it has a battery. I don't imagine that it would use a lot of power either. However a desktop or laptop will overpower it in terms of gaming. But I don't expect a tiny quad core processor to do gaming as its obviously not meant to.

    It must have more power/amps than the pi 2. My pi 2 can't power an external hdd like we see in this video unless I do it with a usb hub. Also my pi 2 is no good at video playback (I've tried all sorts of different video sources, even 240p video playback is extremely choppy). Are there some sorts of video (codecs) that work better than others?

The programmable PIN connectors allow for lots of applications which is what made it take off with hobbyists, who otherwise would have to design their own embedded systems (like the processor in your washing machine) to do what they want.

Although it web browser seems to be pretty bad and just crashes often.

      You can use a phone as a computer. Many smartphones have an HDMI display so that they can connect to a screen, and the USB port can go into a special USB hub for more ports. Throughput would be limited to USB 2.0 speeds in most cases unless you have a phone with a 3.0 port. There may even be a version of linux built for a phone! I do know ubuntu has done some work with this.

      +Juraj Trent A statement like this proves you just don't get it. Yes you can control a robot and led with a $1 controller. You cannot control a robot/led, surf the web, play Flare, VPN into a remote server and watch a DVD at the same time with the $1 controller. It literally is a computer. Full blown. I use the crap out of mine. It is so versatile. Media center, controller... you name it.

    I'm still rocking the pi 1. I hadn't used in a while, booted it up a few days ago and my first thought was, holy fucking shit this is so slow. I may at some-point buy the 3. But, who knows.

    I coded a c++ linux-based web server that allows developers to use Lua to script webpages, the Raspberry 3 is what I'm using to run the program on, it's really nice (especially with a external SSD), I believe the performance would be okay for cheap real world website hosting.
    Installing PHP is horrible on them though, not enough performance for something that hardware intensive.

    • @GarySims
      @GarySims Před 8 lety

      +deamondeathstone1 There is no direct connection with Android, although as others do point out Android is based on Linux and uses ARM chips, like the Pi. However, while Android Authority is focused mainly on Android related material, we are also a tech site, hence the Pi 3 review among other things that we cover. We shouldn't let labels (i.e. channel names) limit us... don't you think?
