Ruth Wilson plays Alison, a young woman attempting to move on from tragedy and build a lasting relationship while contending with the judgment of others and her own self-doubt. Her lover Noah (Dominic West) is a burgeoning writer trying to balance the temptations of success, the family he left behind, and the woman he loves. Noah’s former wife Helen (Maura Tierney) is attempting to piece her life together while navigating divorce proceedings, care for her children, and her parents’ noxious influence. Joshua Jackson plays Cole, Alison’s former husband struggling to overcome past heartbreak and start a promising new life. Yet the long-term ramifications of the affair continue to shape these lives, and will lead to an event that changes everything once again. Award-winning playwright and writer/producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment) and Hagai Levi (In Treatment) created the series. Treem serves as executive producer, along with Levi, Anya Epstein (In Treatment) and director Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights).

in this scene you can clearly see how Helen instantly changes. in the beginning of the scene she is young, carefree Helen, and suddenly she is that tense, stressed out, irritable Helen we know in the seasons that follow.

I absolutely love the chemistry between Dominic West and Maura Tierney. Here we see Helen's heart breaking in real time. Its agonising to watch. because we can empathise with both characters, can't we?

How come he owns up and then goes back to cheating again
Noah’s cheating was unacceptable, but I think he learned his lesson and realize a lot of stuff later on. I never cared about his character after that affair but starting season 4 he grew on me, he tried to move west to be there for his kids and I start feeling bad for him season 5, I thought he got his karma. But in the end, it’s about how you forgive and what you really feel towards someone. Very nice end to a series.
Is there a main reason Noah and Helen can't make it work just asking
Cheating is hard to get over . It’s hard to look at someone who cheated on you let alone have them touch you . Trust , intimacy are just a few things that are thrown out the window . Cheating is the ultimate betrayal in a marriage , he was in love with another women while married . Noah was in love with Allison not Helen and she knew this . You can’t make someone love you back and this is why Helen gave up the fight .
I think Helen was arrogant. She never really appreciated or loved Noah. She just 'felt safe' with him. Noah got bored of her. The opportunity presented itself with Allison. He shouldn't have, but, he an Allison took it. Great series.

Was there a main reason Noah Left Helen for Allison just asking
He is a weak man and he needed a weak woman who can't handle anything and acts child like so he can feel like a strong man and save her. It all comes down to self weakness. Not worthy of the woman Helen is.

Let’s not simplify the complexities of this tv series
They go into that more in S3 but I think Noah's reason for cheating was deeply rooted in feeling inadequate and emasculated for decades. He used an affair with Allison to escape the mounting pressures of his life. Similarly, Allison used an affair with Noah to recover from the grief of losing her child. They used each other to leave their spouses but once they start to heal, they realise what they really wanted was what they had. Helen and Cole didn't deserve that however, I think that the affair made them both confront the people they married, their choices in what led to the downfall of the marriage and were also able to heal as people.
It's a show about the messiness of forgiving.
Noah got bored of the princess Helen.
He loved Helen, but found Alison irresistible at that juncture in his life. The question: do we play our lives out in dull shades of grey or brilliant sunlight? Remember the closing scene in the hotel where Helen asks, what's the end game, Noah? Do we just go grey, loose our hair and die? Noah followed his urge to succeed and leave a mark and thought leaving Helen was an essential ingredient of that.

People cheat when they feel excluded by their lover period. It's not the fault of the cheater. Plus it's a myth to love or attracted to only "one person" the entire life.
