Yeah. People who are the nicest don't label themselves as such and have to tell the entire world. If you have to say it, chances are it's a cover to excuse actions and behaviours. An empathetic person will prove they are empathetic, they don't need to tell anyone because they show it with proof. Empaths tend to think lesser of themselves, anyway, not higher, and definitely not "look at me look at me I'm such a nice person you'd better be agreeing with me".

You can’t just go off of definitions or texts within books or lectures or research papers (that’s not part of what being an empath is either). You actually have to put things into practice. The way someone walks can reveal things about them. It was fun and interesting to watch too, btw.

My mild traumas are not traumatic enough to explain my low emotional affect. Sociopaths are repressing, and there's often training or trauma or both behind why they repress.

My mom is a genuine empath. She was a nurse for 20+ years and eventually had to retire early because she couldn’t handle feeling her patients’ pain any longer. It aged her significantly. I’m extremely empathetic, but my mother feels physical pain if she’s near someone experiencing any sort of pain at all. It’s quite taxing on her. It makes her a fantastic person to be around, she’s the most gentle and loving person I know. But it is extremely difficult for her.

I worked nights and wouldn’t be able to sleep because I was so worried about my patients. I would call and check on them. I also feel pain when my kids do. I had to switch to psych, I still have empathy, but it is not ruining my life. I didn’t know attention seeking was considered empathy. Like those people.

Thank you. Technically psychopathy is also a scale. "Low emotional" affect can mean muted feelings rather than them being completely absent.
I've been following Cassy for a while, and suggested she might be a prosocial psychopath based on how much we're similar. However, she's gone through way more trauma than I have, so sorting out whether she's really just a psychopath with trauma or more of a sociopath gets complicated.
I've stopped pushing the point, because I think she's really hoping to reconnect with her emotions. But I also know I was much more peaceful after embracing my stoicism as just different rather than wrong or broken.

Cassie reminded me a lot of a girl I used to teach (school specifically for those on the spectrum). Very similar mannerisms. Autism and sociopathy are actually misdiagnosed with one enough more often than people think, and sometimes people have traits that fall under both umbrellas. The lack of understanding of emotional depth is a big reason why, a lot of people on the spectrum don’t “get” emotions the way we do. It varies a LOT of course but it makes sense.

    • @AmoebaInk

As a high functioning psychopath, I think I could easily get misdiagnosed as autistic if I pushed for a diagnosis. Traits of both. Took a lot of time and self reflection to understand what side was strongest, and I agree it would be easy for a high functioning psychopath or sociopath to get misdiagnosed, because psychologists aren't taught to recognize high function psychopath or sociopath as a real things with real difficulties.
