While of course I am very passionate about the Bratz (obviously lol) and I have done extensive research PLS can i remind everyone that this video is for ENTERTAINMENT purposes. I do not hate Barbie by any means and I only had a limit of 10 minutes - if I had longer I would have certainly highlighted Barbies redeeming qualities (which there are many!) But for the purpose of this video - I let Bratz have their major slay and maybe poked fun at Barbie a little bit. (Trust me, she can handle it after being Queen of the toy world for YEARS!)
I don't understand, I don't want to be aggressive but I'm so tired of this. Can't you love Bratz without offending Barbie all the time? I mean she is the queen of dolls, thanks to her Bratz exists. Can you respect her for that?

As you've mentioned, Bratz exists because of Barbie, and with this, the main thought of this argument circles back to the intent of the content, which is to highlight Bratz. and I believe in doing so, there's no better benchmark than Barbie, which, in actuality, subtly defines it as the prime (may it be due to its long existence or its mass influence on pop culture). I believe Cara would be more than willing to create a video essay about barbies someday :D
bratz dolls reinvented what it meant to be feminine for me! it wasn't necessarily about pink dresses, long blonde hair, being coddled by boys or being perfectly polite all the time.. instead, it was about being myself, whoever that ended up being - supporting my friends, trying my best and standing up for myself. bratz helped me a lot as someone questioning their gender and struggling with childhood trauma; they made me feel secure in exploring femininity my way!
Fashion Fever Barbie line was the best ever era for barbie. Glam but not Pink, glittery and sparkly. Soft but Fierce. Very Femine. Now Barbie is dead and become like the worst doll now.

My mom and I spoke about this not too long ago. She told me that when my older sister and I were kids, she really struggled finding dolls that looked like us (or even dolls that had brown hair). The Bratz caught her eye. My mom picked up Yasmin, because she actually looked like she could have been latina. I find it ironic that while most parents hated the Bratz, my mom absolutely adored them due to the diversity they had (and she said she liked their outfits). She told me that she even preferred them over Barbie
My grandmother was half native half Mexican, and as a child the only dolls she bought me were traditional ceramic native dolls and she LOVED bratz because they reminded her of the fashionable cool Latina women she knew and loved and never really saw represented anywhere else. (She used to call them chola dolls - in a very loving positive way!) I was lucky to have a bratz childhood

What I like about both Barbie and Bratz is that they both show different sides of femininity. Bratz shows the kind of edgy, more outgoing, artistic, expressionistic, point of view of femininity where as Barbie kind of showed a more poised, hyper, feminine and soft viewpoint of femininity. I am a huge fan of both. I’ve seen all of the Bratz and Barbie movies and honestly I think they both have lessons and inspiration for even young girls now.

for me it was definitely that bratz had more representation. My first bratz doll was a Yasmín rock angelz who at the time, I was convinced was Latina. Plus we had the same beauty mark. It was the first time I felt like I could be glamorous and edgy while being Latina
Just wished MGA (company that made Bratz) can see how much potential the brand has. Like Bratz > Barbie for sure but Bratz is far superior than even Rainbow High or LOL.
I find Rainbow High so ugly. Like I'm not the biggest fan of the bratzdolls faces but the outfits make up for it. Rainbow High has horrible faces and the dolls just look like babies dressed up as adults.
LOL is a much more successful brand than bratz. Rainbow high I would also say is much more successful than bratz since their budget is way above bratz budget. Currently, retailers(Walmart, target, etc.) Do not trust the bratz brand very much since it's multiple reboot failures.
As an avid Barbie fan, especially of the classic Barbie movies, it’s a little sad to see people dislike her so much. However, it is really interesting to learn more about the Bratz franchise and what made people like them. I think that there’s a good place in the world into the industry for both types of dolls and types of characters. I’ll be at, when I look at all the Barbie movies next to each other I do start wish for a little more visual variety in terms of the protagonist. If nothing else, I wish they’d have dyed her hair every once in a while (or let her tan a bit in movies like Island Princess, where she’s a Tarzan type character).

Don’t get it twisted Barbie will always be the main girl there’s no denying that. Without Barbie their wouldn’t be a lot of others. But others are simply better

@@lillytibby-ev9dt for POC especially little girls it was hard to find a doll that looked like you even some parents were disappointed at the lack of representation because all from what I know back then almost every doll was white and blond with blue eyes which is why people preferred bratz some people in the comments even admitted that bratz just does diversity better and in my opinion it’s true as a POC myself I also liked bratz more than Barbie they just seemed prettier and more stylish Barbie is cool too so I won’t bash her because I still have a place in my heart for the movies haha but a little diversity it’s always nice and I think it’s great that today kids won’t have to worry about that kind of thing because there are so many options now and so many cool dolls to choose from :)

I honestly like both equally, but I find myself leaning towards barbie a bit more. Barbie movies from 2006/7-2011/13 were great in my opinion, they included good messages and also started to shift from traditional princess/damsel in distress!
As a black woman, it was the first ever kid/doll franchise that had rnb music I was able to listen to ( since the lyrics and meanings were kid friendly ). And since it had more of an appeal for the black community, especially again in terms of music. They also were more diverse in terms of characters in movies and games. I never once saw a black main character in a Barbie movie, but Bratz came through for me. I till love Bratz to this day and while I do like Barbie, I love Bratz a lot more, and I’m glad my mom didn’t just quickly assume it was adult and try to stop me from loving it like my grandma tried 😭.

I've always loved Bratz. I remember playing with them with my friend after-school and even though I'm a guy, I didn't feel weird playing with Bratz back then cause I more focused on their stories.
Same here, I remember there was this bulky pink laptop toy with a bunch of scuffed Bratz-themed games on 'em but I thought it was pretty neato. They're great mascots for that particular early 2000's edge!
I'm 29 and Bratz were so much cooler. As someone who has a sister thats 10 years older than me, she was the epidemy of an early 2000's popular girl like paris hilton. Bratz outfits were like my older sisters outfits but *extra*. They were the "cool" girls.

Ngl, I used to gobble up a Barbie movie, but I always saw her as an far-away fantasy girl. Even as a kid, you realize she's nauseatingly too perfect. BRATZ was down to earth, real and centered a group. Teenage girls, doing teenage things. And if you look, the fashionable group of teen girls formula did so well with other shows, like Totally Spies (which came out the same yr), Winx club and Monster High. I had no idea their creator ditched Mattel and even ran to the competition. The shade!!
Bratz focused on all the characters, Barbie only focused on, well Barbie. To a point where people are surprised that there ARE other characters in the Barbie franchise e.g. Skipper, Kira, Theresa, Midge, Kayla, etc but they're often overlooked. So effing annoying! Edit: my sister, our peers, friends outside of school and I REALLY wanted more dolls of Barbie's friends, however the friends of Barbie were VERY FRUSTRATINGLY more expensive & harder to find ........did anyone else experience this palaver?
The others were very common in my area and some, like the Chelsea dolls, were cheaper due to their smaller size. Knew people that would only let their kids have the younger aged dolls, like Skipper& Chelsea. Ken dolls were the harder to find ones.
YES! Exactly the same problem here, I’m from India! I hated a a kid constantly being gifted blonde Barbies who all looked THE SAME with the same face modelling, blonde hair, skinny body and maybe a different outfit. My FAVOURITE doll growing up was my Bratz Sasha doll 🥹🥹 her clothing options were so cool and edgy, she had dark BROWN HAIR just like me, and beautiful brown skin!! And her clothes were black, silver, and DENIM and growing up as a tomboy i personally resonated with that kind of doll waaaayyyy more and only wanted bratz dolls because they didnt wear only pink 😂 I still liked playing with dolls as a child, just not the blonde haired, blue-eyed ones
As a child I was often given barbies as a present on my birthday or on christmas. Eventually I got really tired of barbies and the colour pink that barbie loves so much. One day I walked into a toy store and I saw Bratz, I was obsessed because I had never seen dolls quite like them, I thought they looked so cool, and I still do now 😊
I liked both but as a black girl I loved the bratz as they had all types of girls from every ethnicity being fly fun and looking great their personality.
i was a blue eyed blonde A+ student in pink, so Barbie was MUCH more relatable to me, but Bratz dropped right when i hit my age of 12. an age when you are still a child enough to enjoy playing dolls, but also you are old enough to appreciate more "adult" way of dressing up as Bratz did, short skirts, platform shoes, noticable makeup and so on. i always pretended to play as Chloe just because she looked like me, but i remember Bratz dolls being a kind of symbol of stepping into teen ages for me.
@Pink Valentine it could be. i was buying Barbie magazine every month and remember Barbie had a latina friend and a dark-skin friend too, but it always was that they are just friends, the second role. main focus was on Barbie's blonde family, while Bratz are just best friends, all of them are main characters, there was no "main hero" there. also those darker skin characters were not present in barbie movies, so i will agree. fun fact: when i was a child i was shipping Barbie with Teresa instead of Ken lmao, thought they'd fit together more
I like Barbie better for their proportionality and I just think they look better. But Bratz are gorgeous and their style and clothing was just unmatched, except for maybe by the Barbie fashion fever era. Also, I think the Bratz show and movies beat Barbie media.
I loved Bratz as a kid, Yasmin was always my fav and I think it’s because she was so shy and tended to get left out, at times and considering I have always struggled with that, I found it relatable. Of course, it also helped that she had long, brunette hair…Which I also have, lmao
I always identified with Yasmin, cuz she was a brunette with green eyes, and so was I, also I had assumed she was half Latina like myself, and years later it turns out to be true!
I liked both Barbie and Bratz, but Bratz will always be my favorite, my grandmother loved them as well. A lot of people didn’t like them because of the clothing ,but they tend to forget that Bratz are about fashion. I wouldn’t mind them remaking Bratz. I loved the idea of them having a fashion blog. I find myself rewatching the show every now and then on CZcams.
I still watch reruns with my siblings of bratz on CZcams even now! The tweevils and Burdin were comedy gold😂😂. And my liking for fashion grew from them too! I loved how their episodes weren't confined to just ordinary slice of life either. One moment they're in their office and the next, they're undercover spies in England😂😂 or genies in the desert. Awesome!
For some reason my mom wouldn’t allow me to have Bratz dolls, only Barbies. I guess she thought Bratz were too rebellious. Too bad, because there are hardly any Asian Barbies.
REAL!!!!! I grew up watching the Bratz and collecting the dolls. I liked barbie but she's just... Not relatable. Growing up as a little black girl I never felt connected to barbie or really aspired to be like her. But then I was introduced to the bratz by my older sister and it was like everything changed. I LOVED that the bratz were such a diverse group of friends (especially at the time.) I saw myself in Sasha and even wanted to change my name to hers for a small amount of time 😭😭😭 The bratz had cool style and had cool clothes and were a small group of friends who were close and did fun things together. I wanted to be like them and have a group of friends like them. The Bratz taught me that I can express myself through my clothes and I took it to heart. Now that I'm an adult and can dress how I want, my main sense of style is so similar to the pretty in punk line. My formative years were literally shaped by the bratz and I collect bratz things nowadays like the bratz makeup palette and wear items from their multiple clothing collabs. They're just inherently better. Barbie's whole damsel in distress thing was just harmful to me and the Bratz actually stood up for themselves and didn't just sit back and do nothing. ALSO THE MUSIC is on a whole other level. The songs are so catchy and I had to rewatch parts of the video because I was singing along to the background music and not paying attention to what you were saying 😅
while i was a diehard fangirl of barbie when i was little, i do now realize the importance of diversity with characters, dolls included. My favorite princess used to be aurora because of her fluffy hair and pink dress, but when rapunzel came out i was in love. she was the first princess to have green eyes just like me, and i felt seen, closer to her and felt like i could become her. in terms of actual dolls i cant say i noticed the lack of variety in eye and hair color (let alone skintone) since i was imagining them to be different characters anyway, although im sure i would've enjoyed finding a doll that looked like me :)
Sasha was always my favourite because I was a dancer and I just really identified with her love for dance! She is also the organised one, and that’s 100% my role in my friend group and always has been haha
I grew up with bratz and I loved their shenanigans. They are so full of life. Jade was my fav bc of her personality was similar to mine but I also looked like yasmin and as a mixed girl I felt so pretty & represented having a doll that looked like me. You’re also SO right about them being cool. They were rock stars for heavens sake! I got my first guitar cause of them 😂
Bratz defined my childhood and are still a huge part of my life today. As a guy I am incredibly grateful that my family didn't care at all about me liking what was considered "Girls Toys" and bought them for me pretty regularly that I now have a pretty awesome-sized collection. The moment the Brtzt stepped onto the scene they changed everything, They are the first and for a loooooong while the only fashion dolls to have complete diversity with their core line. I love that about them. Barbie had such a stranglehold on the doll world that is was high time someone provided some competition (I don't hate Barbie but she desperately a real competitor that could give her a run for her money). I love all of their fashions, (The more goth/punk/edgy the better) but I even enjoy the more cutesy fashions they have as well. I also really love their friendship with one another, they all truly care about one another and act like sisters. Roxxi and Nevra are I think the first ever confirmed LGBT dolls and that is sooo amazing! I think the thing I love most of all though is the quality. I will defend MGA dolls prices because you are paying for top of the line quality where as with Mattel, their quality isn't as high resulting in painted on tops, unremovable fashions with cheap material and plastic belts. All of Bratz's clothes (and Rainbow/Shadow High, LOL OMG and Mermaids Mermaze) all feel like real articles of clothing that have been shrunken down to fit a doll its made that well imo.
I dont agree with bc of the fact that Barbie is white you cant identify with her. Rosetta is my fave in the Tinkerbelle series and im black. Its the same with with Stella from Winx and Sam from totally spies. I mostly identify with the girly characters.
When i was growing up, Bratz serie's was one of my favorite, I am studying fashion desing and Bratz are in part responsable of this. Bratz made me realize how much i love fashion since i was a little girl
I think this is part of why I, along with a lot of other people, liked Raquelle better. Sure, she was mean, but at least she had a personality and actual goals + motivation (even if they were misconstrued). She wasn’t flawless and boring, she was actually _fun_and had sass, as compared to the cookie cutter character Barbie was in every piece of media she was in.
I actually love both! They may hate each other but they both have very different fashion style, movies, shows, etc! They both are very unique dolls and brands.
I personally love both, cuz Barbie also have messages in most of their movies, especially Barbie and the diamond castle. It's also abt friendship yk the fighting, making up, sticking together to the end etc. plus it's also one of my favorites
I absolutely loved the Bratz growing up. I had a bunch of dolls, and a bunch of other Bratz themed stuff. They were definitely cool and edgy, and I think that’s what drew me to them. It’s nice seeing MGA make a comeback with the Bratz. 🥰
I remember when my mum let me FINALLY watch a bratz movie. I never had any of the dolls and my mother was very against me watching the bratz. She claimed it’s because they look too fake and that might be an bad influence on young girls, but I remember watching that one movie and I didn’t take a care about there fake lips, or unrealistic body proportions! The truth was that we were young, most of us as little kids didn’t really have a second thought about their looks, just thought they were cool. Because Bratz was cool! They didnt ‘shape’ my childhood, but I will always have a HUGE respect for them. Thank you Bratz
as a girl who was really young when bratz and barbie was sparking in popularity (born in 06 🧍🏻♀️), i have always enjoyed both in their own ways, but bratz more! yes i love barbie for the fairytale aspect, i adore the movies and barbie lines. bratz honestly made me more confident as a child, they taught little me that my happiness comes first, my dreams, my passions and that i should somehow always look out for myself and see that i express myself in every possible way i could. bratz also didn't give the "cookie cutter" lessons, in a way bratz made them more relatable, rather than barbie who was mostly just telling them and shoving them down our throats. being 17 now, still have enormous love for both brands. both hold gigantic nostalgia for me. yet, i mostly always rewatch the bratz rather than the barbie movies at times 🤷🏻♀️
‘06 baby here too. I personally like Barbie’s face and her old movies better but I like the Bratz clothes, commercials, and makeup better. I wasn’t allowed bratz dolls as a kid bc my parents thought I would be a brat. 16 year old me still wants a bratz doll 😂
Even as a young girl barbies felt...Patronizing? Idk they always were happy and had everything going well or had the help of their love interest. But with Bratz they felt REAL. They had good fashion, they fought, they were stubborn, "over dramatic" at times even. They could be feminine without being passive or with the ugliest color combo of all time.....𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙡𝙚........
Also honestly, the dolls were much better quality. I had my cousins hand me downs and also other accessories were significantly better quality, for example they had a car that had a real radio that you can actually tune, a steering wheel that worked, and it think it had lights too. Meanwhile, the best I could expect out of my Barbie cars where doors that can open and close, because I had a Barbie doll car that didn't have doors that open and closed, you just had to shove the doll from the top.
I used to adore bratz as a kid. My parents never really got why so I didn't get any dolls until way, way, later lol. I think what I liked the most, even if i didnt know it at the time, was the stye. Barbie's all abt being high femme and soft and a "girly girl" while Bratz wasnt. They were still clearly girls and still clearly girly. But more in a punk way. Theyre still very girly but they're also ready to rough and tumble
I grew up in the 2010s so I see Monster High similar to how you see Bratz. I was always a kid that loved playing with dolls and I did like my Barbies, but my dream was always to have a monster high doll and because we were too poor to get them for me I used to pretend my barbie dolls and other cheaper dolls were monster highs
i liked both franchises' movies but if i'm picking a doll/merch it's bratz all the way. their fashion is diverse so are their characters. they were the cool girls that all the girls could join and not feel excluded.
I like that the bratz really did do cool and practical ( sometimes) things like solving friend problems, knowing their worth, showed their faults like being too controlling, defensive or selfish and less caring to their bff's. I did adore the wonderful adventures that were more magical or fast paced too. Great video explanation 😊✨
There was diversity in Barbie, it's not just ''pink dresses'' and ''hyper femininity'', as some of the comments are claiming (bashing hyper femininity is misogyny in itself to me). In the late 60s Mattel did introduce the first black Barbie, most of their collections had a black Barbie aswell, including their iconic yearly Christmas Holiday Barbie. They just weren't as diverse/inclusive as Bratz. Us Asians, Latinas, Middle Easterners etc def weren't represented but most of us kids growing up didn''t care about that stuff, we loved Barbie for her pretty outfits and pretty hair and her versatility, Barbie wasn't one-dimensional. And personal opinions aside, Barbie's cultural impact, legacy and iconic status is undeniable, and way more profound than Bratz. To us Millennials Barbie is very special cause she was a huge part of our childhood growing up. Bratz was too and I like both but i personally prefer Barbie over Bratz, imo Bratz was very much of it's time with mainly just y2k teen-y fashion, whereas Barbie is very timeless and fashion-wise way more versatile.
I love both the Barbie and Bratz form of femininity. Barbie is a softer more whimsical and wholesome and individually focused vibe. The Bratz were modern, edgy, mature and more about girl group expression if that makes sense.
Bratz was the only brand where I can get name plated stuff. I remember 7 year old me being really excited getting a Yasmine perfume bottle because it had my name on it 😭
My mum refused to let me play with bratz dolls or watch the bratz cartoons growing up because she thought that bratz is trashy and inappropriate for young girls. So I grew up with barbie and monster high instead lol (which I didn’t overall mind especially because I love both barbie and monster high too lol).
Yes, while I think Bratz had more depth in their branding, aesthetically Barbie is an institution. Barbie’s presence is so steeped into our cultural landscape, across the world you can call a woman a Barbie and everyone will be familiar with which form of the feminine archetype she occupies. To say Barbie is iconic is an understatement.There’s McDonalds, Coca Cola, and Barbie. She’s an effigy of the ideal woman in Western society and around the world, whether that’s good or bad. And the recent Barbie releases have been groundbreaking in representations of diversity. Barbie’s personality is bland tho. Bratz have better style and a sassier design. I’m partial to vintage Barbie’s kitschy vixen mold. But alas, Bratz are very much of their time. Undeniably y2k even in appearance, which means a little dated.
I was so obsessed with bratz, barbie just didnt connect to me, the denim, aesthetics look, and the girls personalities being so different and even how diverse they looked, it just pulled me in so much more, I could see strong sisterhood with different girls most girls in my school preferred Bratz too, im from the UK, we all had doll and bartz pencil cases and things, no surprise to see it was outselling barbie I could see it
im not really feminine but i grew up with barbie and i used to watch it every weekend, it was my dream to wear long princess dresses like her. the movies had a special part in my heart like winx, both of these shows made me start drawing actually. for the unnecceary love interests, i never cared about them tbh and since they were mostly at the end of the movies i ignored them completely. i dont know why people look at a pşece of media, especially cartoons, and think this is what women are like so this should be what i become. like i never had those thoughts. i never looked at my barbie dolls and thought oh they are skinny i must be like them, they wear pink and ultra feminine stuff i must do it too, i just made them scissor each other in peace. later on i discovered sam&mickey's doll stopparody animations futuring barbie and her family and i still watch it lol. brats is way better in inclusivity for sure tho but i'll always be team barbie just because of the nostalgia.
I remember when Bratz were criticised for being vapid fashionistas, they are very 2000s but it's easy to see why they were more popular than Barbies, they were a little edgier and less pink and girly and the 2000s was when there started being this demand for this kind of representation of women to be mainstream so that little girls had more than just princesses and sterotypically feminine things, dolls like Monster High, Rainbow High, Ever After High ect. are all starting to make Barbie look like a vintage doll for adults more than children, I still love the old dolls and movies but she feels kinda irrelevant now with little girls actually wanting to see dolls that represent their imagination and appearance
I agree with you on some points, like the Bratz’s personalities being more realistic. However I still believe it’s good to have a character who teaches moral lessons , like Barbie. It’s fine that you like bratz more, I just think we need a good mix of those two different kinds of character. The relatable one and the one who’s a good role model.
I had more barbies due to Bratz just being a bit more expensive and my mom growing up with barbie, but I still had a few bratz (the strange big headed bratz baby dolls). I was more obsessed with monster high though despite not having any monster high dolls (idk why I never asked for any at holidays). Then I got into American girl dolls and saved up for one of those in middle school and that ate up any money for other dolls since they are soooo expensive.

I wasn’t even subconsciously thinking of the idea of diversity before, nor I did not really cared, I used to not even have an idea that people gives importance to it. But the reason why I loved Bratz more, is their REALISTIC STYLE you could try in real life, at least find something similar looking to their outfits. I had so much dolls of them. Barbie? I loved the movies, but I had zero interest on purchasing their dolls, idk why, most girls I knew was obsessed with Barbie dolls, but I din’t felt the same excitement as they had for Barbie dolls, I once tried to purchase a Barbie doll, then ended up forgetting I had it, it just became a house display. Unlike when I had the Bratz, I had so much excitement as I completed them, where I can’t help but get their latest clothes on them.
I believe Barbie was better (don't get me wrong, they had more time to do more variations) but Mattel did amazing back in the late 90s and 00s with all the games they released showing Barbie working in different fields (marine biologist, detective chasing a kidnapper, horserider, etc.) I believe that changed a bit, Bratz focused more only on, well, fashion. While Bratz had more range of colours and fashion styles. Barbie's games (if you choose the mattel detective one) has her tech friend who is also in a wheelchair, was actually nice for a change to show more characters, she is also the one that rescues Ken. I know Barbie also faced many scandals that are horryfying earlier on due to also being a product of their time. But she also had every profession ever and in the games she is a pretty active character that actual does actual stuff. I don't agree the 90s barbie were all about poise, soft femininity and pink, because she had amazing roles in games being a badass character. But, again, that's a meta of the whole franchise and I could understand how the "barbiecore" was presented as that kind of femininity to some, because barbie made the cliché first and then disrupted it.
Growing up I was more of a barbie girl and I liked her because she was blonde and has blue eyes like me and I had some bratz too now I love bratz way more tbh they’re just cooler
what's funny is that, bratz faded into obscurity while barbie lives on and even got her own theatrical live action movie. so definitely barbie for me. i respect your opinion tho
Both brands have their iconic moments. In my opinion barbie was at its peak during the 2000s. Mattel releasing the movies and barbie dolls to go with it was a great marketing move. Bratz were definitely the cooler and mature brand of the two. I think bratz are better than barbie now since mattel is no longer creative or detailed as it used to be.
I don’t understand why Barbie fans get so distraught when people talk about liking Bratz more. Both sides have negative things to say about eachother, it’s highly expected, but if people know they are going to be offended by a video with a title telling them Bratz is better than Barbie then why watch? You hit the nail on the head Im a trans girl who’s a huge tomboy and even before i cameout when i was a kid i LOVED Bratz, the music, the TV show, the PS2 games, their attitudes and personalities really made me love them, and of course i loved the way the dolls looked, Bratz showed us that being a girl is more than pink dresses, blonde hair and wanting to be a princess, being a girl is being yourself
i think they serve two different purposes. barbie is for dreaming, thats why the best barbies are the exaggerated 135 careers, fairy princess ones. they are fun and imaginative and why the movies are so great. however bratz dolls almost never miss and thats because their down to earth in a way modern barbie wishes she was, they are fashionable and cute but feel way more human then modern barbie who tries to be down to earth but ends up being so basic thats she's not anyone. barbie is so much better when shes in the clouds.
I loved barbie movies (still do) but didn't have them, but I had a ton of Bratz. I loved them for their fashion sense and beautiful clothes, it was a whole cult following with my friend too.
Iooking back i gave to admit they’re distaste and shaming of the girly characters who were modeled after Barbie doesn’t sit right with me especially as someone who enjoyed both. Yes the character were the villains, but they’re appearance and interests could’ve been different. Hyper femininity was demonized a lot in my childhood. And I mean bratz did kinda fail and flop after a bit of success does not have the space as Barbie. Today Barbie has the most diverse doll lines.
I love this video essay. Great points. I also like that most of MGA doll lines have similar vibe with Bratz, they are bold, edgy and super high fashion, however, I am just thinking, why the value of Bratz dolls are not that high as Barbies, I dunno if it is just here in Ph.

As you've mentioned, Bratz exists because of Barbie, and with this, the main thought of this argument circles back to the intent of the content, which is to highlight Bratz. and I believe in doing so, there's no better benchmark than Barbie, which, in actuality, subtly defines it as the prime (may it be due to its long existence or its mass influence on pop culture). I believe Cara would be more than willing to create a video essay about barbies someday :D

bratz dolls reinvented what it meant to be feminine for me! it wasn't necessarily about pink dresses, long blonde hair, being coddled by boys or being perfectly polite all the time.. instead, it was about being myself, whoever that ended up being - supporting my friends, trying my best and standing up for myself. bratz helped me a lot as someone questioning their gender and struggling with childhood trauma; they made me feel secure in exploring femininity my way!
Fashion Fever Barbie line was the best ever era for barbie. Glam but not Pink, glittery and sparkly. Soft but Fierce. Very Femine. Now Barbie is dead and become like the worst doll now.

My mom and I spoke about this not too long ago. She told me that when my older sister and I were kids, she really struggled finding dolls that looked like us (or even dolls that had brown hair). The Bratz caught her eye. My mom picked up Yasmin, because she actually looked like she could have been latina. I find it ironic that while most parents hated the Bratz, my mom absolutely adored them due to the diversity they had (and she said she liked their outfits). She told me that she even preferred them over Barbie

My grandmother was half native half Mexican, and as a child the only dolls she bought me were traditional ceramic native dolls and she LOVED bratz because they reminded her of the fashionable cool Latina women she knew and loved and never really saw represented anywhere else. (She used to call them chola dolls - in a very loving positive way!) I was lucky to have a bratz childhood

What I like about both Barbie and Bratz is that they both show different sides of femininity. Bratz shows the kind of edgy, more outgoing, artistic, expressionistic, point of view of femininity where as Barbie kind of showed a more poised, hyper, feminine and soft viewpoint of femininity.
I am a huge fan of both. I’ve seen all of the Bratz and Barbie movies and honestly I think they both have lessons and inspiration for even young girls now.

I find Rainbow High so ugly. Like I'm not the biggest fan of the bratzdolls faces but the outfits make up for it. Rainbow High has horrible faces and the dolls just look like babies dressed up as adults.
LOL is a much more successful brand than bratz. Rainbow high I would also say is much more successful than bratz since their budget is way above bratz budget. Currently, retailers(Walmart, target, etc.) Do not trust the bratz brand very much since it's multiple reboot failures.

As an avid Barbie fan, especially of the classic Barbie movies, it’s a little sad to see people dislike her so much. However, it is really interesting to learn more about the Bratz franchise and what made people like them. I think that there’s a good place in the world into the industry for both types of dolls and types of characters. I’ll be at, when I look at all the Barbie movies next to each other I do start wish for a little more visual variety in terms of the protagonist. If nothing else, I wish they’d have dyed her hair every once in a while (or let her tan a bit in movies like Island Princess, where she’s a Tarzan type character).
Love your view! Definitely think there’s room for both franchises! If only Mattel and MGA weren’t against each other and just let them both co exist without the lawsuits :(

@@lillytibby-ev9dt for POC especially little girls it was hard to find a doll that looked like you even some parents were disappointed at the lack of representation because all from what I know back then almost every doll was white and blond with blue eyes which is why people preferred bratz some people in the comments even admitted that bratz just does diversity better and in my opinion it’s true as a POC myself I also liked bratz more than Barbie they just seemed prettier and more stylish Barbie is cool too so I won’t bash her because I still have a place in my heart for the movies haha but a little diversity it’s always nice and I think it’s great that today kids won’t have to worry about that kind of thing because there are so many options now and so many cool dolls to choose from :)

As a black woman, it was the first ever kid/doll franchise that had rnb music I was able to listen to ( since the lyrics and meanings were kid friendly ). And since it had more of an appeal for the black community, especially again in terms of music. They also were more diverse in terms of characters in movies and games. I never once saw a black main character in a Barbie movie, but Bratz came through for me.
I till love Bratz to this day and while I do like Barbie, I love Bratz a lot more, and I’m glad my mom didn’t just quickly assume it was adult and try to stop me from loving it like my grandma tried 😭.

I'm 29 and Bratz were so much cooler. As someone who has a sister thats 10 years older than me, she was the epidemy of an early 2000's popular girl like paris hilton. Bratz outfits were like my older sisters outfits but *extra*. They were the "cool" girls.

Ngl, I used to gobble up a Barbie movie, but I always saw her as an far-away fantasy girl. Even as a kid, you realize she's nauseatingly too perfect. BRATZ was down to earth, real and centered a group. Teenage girls, doing teenage things. And if you look, the fashionable group of teen girls formula did so well with other shows, like Totally Spies (which came out the same yr), Winx club and Monster High.

Bratz focused on all the characters, Barbie only focused on, well Barbie. To a point where people are surprised that there ARE other characters in the Barbie franchise e.g. Skipper, Kira, Theresa, Midge, Kayla, etc but they're often overlooked. So effing annoying!

The others were very common in my area and some, like the Chelsea dolls, were cheaper due to their smaller size. Knew people that would only let their kids have the younger aged dolls, like Skipper& Chelsea. Ken dolls were the harder to find ones.

I hated a a kid constantly being gifted blonde Barbies who all looked THE SAME with the same face modelling, blonde hair, skinny body and maybe a different outfit. My FAVOURITE doll growing up was my Bratz Sasha doll 🥹🥹 her clothing options were so cool and edgy, she had dark BROWN HAIR just like me, and beautiful brown skin!! And her clothes were black, silver, and DENIM and growing up as a tomboy i personally resonated with that kind of doll waaaayyyy more and only wanted bratz dolls because they didnt wear only pink 😂 I still liked playing with dolls as a child, just not the blonde haired, blue-eyed ones
As a child I was often given barbies as a present on my birthday or on christmas. Eventually I got really tired of barbies and the colour pink that barbie loves so much. One day I walked into a toy store and I saw Bratz, I was obsessed because I had never seen dolls quite like them, I thought they looked so cool, and I still do now 😊
I liked both but as a black girl I loved the bratz as they had all types of girls from every ethnicity being fly fun and looking great their personality.

i was a blue eyed blonde A+ student in pink, so Barbie was MUCH more relatable to me, but Bratz dropped right when i hit my age of 12. an age when you are still a child enough to enjoy playing dolls, but also you are old enough to appreciate more "adult" way of dressing up as Bratz did, short skirts, platform shoes, noticable makeup and so on. i always pretended to play as Chloe just because she looked like me, but i remember Bratz dolls being a kind of symbol of stepping into teen ages for me.
@Pink Valentine it could be. i was buying Barbie magazine every month and remember Barbie had a latina friend and a dark-skin friend too, but it always was that they are just friends, the second role. main focus was on Barbie's blonde family, while Bratz are just best friends, all of them are main characters, there was no "main hero" there. also those darker skin characters were not present in barbie movies, so i will agree.

I like Barbie better for their proportionality and I just think they look better. But Bratz are gorgeous and their style and clothing was just unmatched, except for maybe by the Barbie fashion fever era. Also, I think the Bratz show and movies beat Barbie media.

I liked both Barbie and Bratz, but Bratz will always be my favorite, my grandmother loved them as well. A lot of people didn’t like them because of the clothing ,but they tend to forget that Bratz are about fashion. I wouldn’t mind them remaking Bratz. I loved the idea of them having a fashion blog. I find myself rewatching the show every now and then on CZcams.

I still watch reruns with my siblings of bratz on CZcams even now! The tweevils and Burdin were comedy gold😂😂. And my liking for fashion grew from them too! I loved how their episodes weren't confined to just ordinary slice of life either. One moment they're in their office and the next, they're undercover spies in England😂😂 or genies in the desert. REAL!!!!! I grew up watching the Bratz and collecting the dolls. I liked barbie but she's just... Not relatable. Growing up as a little black girl I never felt connected to barbie or really aspired to be like her. But then I was introduced to the bratz by my older sister and it was like everything changed. I LOVED that the bratz were such a diverse group of friends (especially at the time.) I saw myself in Sasha and even wanted to change my name to hers for a small amount of time 😭😭😭 The bratz had cool style and had cool clothes and were a small group of friends who were close and did fun things together. I wanted to be like them and have a group of friends like them. The Bratz taught me that I can express myself through my clothes and I took it to heart. Now that I'm an adult and can dress how I want, my main sense of style is so similar to the pretty in punk line. My formative years were literally shaped by the bratz and I collect bratz things nowadays like the bratz makeup palette and wear items from their multiple clothing collabs. They're just inherently better. Barbie's whole damsel in distress thing was just harmful to me and the Bratz actually stood up for themselves and didn't just sit back and do nothing. ALSO THE MUSIC is on a whole other level. The songs are so catchy and I had to rewatch parts of the video because I was singing along to the background music and not paying attention to what you were saying 😅

while i was a diehard fangirl of barbie when i was little, i do now realize the importance of diversity with characters, dolls included. My favorite princess used to be aurora because of her fluffy hair and pink dress, but when rapunzel came out i was in love. she was the first princess to have green eyes just like me, and i felt seen, closer to her and felt like i could become her. in terms of actual dolls i cant say i noticed the lack of variety in eye and hair color (let alone skintone) since i was imagining them to be different characters anyway, although im sure i would've enjoyed finding a doll that looked like me :)
Sasha was always my favourite because I was a dancer and I just really identified with her love for dance! She is also the organised one, and that’s 100% my role in my friend group and always has been haha
I grew up with bratz and I loved their shenanigans. They are so full of life. Jade was my fav bc of her personality was similar to mine but I also looked like yasmin and as a mixed girl I felt so pretty & represented having a doll that looked like me. You’re also SO right about them being cool. They were rock stars for heavens sake! I got my first guitar cause of them 😂
Bratz defined my childhood and are still a huge part of my life today. As a guy I am incredibly grateful that my family didn't care at all about me liking what was considered "Girls Toys" and bought them for me pretty regularly that I now have a pretty awesome-sized collection. The moment the Brtzt stepped onto the scene they changed everything, They are the first and for a loooooong while the only fashion dolls to have complete diversity with their core line. I love that about them. Barbie had such a stranglehold on the doll world that is was high time someone provided some competition (I don't hate Barbie but she desperately a real competitor that could give her a run for her money). I love all of their fashions, (The more goth/punk/edgy the better) but I even enjoy the more cutesy fashions they have as well. I also really love their friendship with one another, they all truly care about one another and act like sisters. Roxxi and Nevra are I think the first ever confirmed LGBT dolls and that is sooo amazing! I think the thing I love most of all though is the quality. I will defend MGA dolls prices because you are paying for top of the line quality where as with Mattel, their quality isn't as high resulting in painted on tops, unremovable fashions with cheap material and plastic belts. All of Bratz's clothes (and Rainbow/Shadow High, LOL OMG and Mermaids Mermaze) all feel like real articles of clothing that have been shrunken down to fit a doll its made that well imo.
I dont agree with bc of the fact that Barbie is white you cant identify with her. Rosetta is my fave in the Tinkerbelle series and im black. Its the same with with Stella from Winx and Sam from totally spies. I mostly identify with the girly characters.

I think this is part of why I, along with a lot of other people, liked Raquelle better. Sure, she was mean, but at least she had a personality and actual goals + motivation (even if they were misconstrued). She wasn’t flawless and boring, she was actually _fun_and had sass, as compared to the cookie cutter character Barbie was in every piece of media she was in.

She claimed it’s because they look too fake and that might be an bad influence on young girls, but I remember watching that one movie and I didn’t take a care about there fake lips, or unrealistic body proportions! as a girl who was really young when bratz and barbie was sparking in popularity (born in 06 🧍🏻♀️), i have always enjoyed both in their own ways, but bratz more! yes i love barbie for the fairytale aspect, i adore the movies and barbie lines. bratz honestly made me more confident as a child, they taught little me that my happiness comes first, my dreams, my passions and that i should somehow always look out for myself and see that i express myself in every possible way i could. bratz also didn't give the "cookie cutter" lessons, in a way bratz made them more relatable, rather than barbie who was mostly just telling them and shoving them down our throats.
being 17 now, still have enormous love for both brands. both hold gigantic nostalgia for me. yet, i mostly always rewatch the bratz rather than the barbie movies at times 🤷🏻♀️

Even as a young girl barbies felt...Patronizing? Idk they always were happy and had everything going well or had the help of their love interest. But with Bratz they felt REAL. They had good fashion, they fought, they were stubborn, "over dramatic" at times even. I had my cousins hand me downs and also other accessories were significantly better quality, for example they had a car that had a real radio that you can actually tune, a steering wheel that worked, and it think it had lights too.
Meanwhile, the best I could expect out of my Barbie cars where doors that can open and close, because I had a Barbie doll car that didn't have doors that open and closed, you just had to shove the doll from the top.
I used to adore bratz as a kid. My parents never really got why so I didn't get any dolls until way, way, later lol. I think what I liked the most, even if i didnt know it at the time, was the stye. Barbie's all abt being high femme and soft and a "girly girl" while Bratz wasnt. They were still clearly girls and still clearly girly. But more in a punk way. Theyre still very girly but they're also ready to rough and tumble
I grew up in the 2010s so I see Monster High similar to how you see Bratz. I was always a kid that loved playing with dolls and I did like my Barbies, but my dream was always to have a monster high doll and because we were too poor to get them for me I used to pretend my barbie dolls and other cheaper dolls were monster highs
I loved bratz but my mom didnt buy me very many of the dolls because the peg feet creeped her out

i liked both franchises' movies but if i'm picking a doll/merch it's bratz all the way. their fashion is diverse so are their characters. they were the cool girls that all the girls could join and not feel excluded.
I like that the bratz really did do cool and practical ( sometimes) things like solving friend problems, knowing their worth, showed their faults like being too controlling, defensive or selfish and less caring to their bff's.
I did adore the wonderful adventures that were more magical or fast paced too.

There was diversity in Barbie, it's not just ''pink dresses'' and ''hyper femininity'', as some of the comments are claiming (bashing hyper femininity is misogyny in itself to me). In the late 60s Mattel did introduce the first black Barbie, most of their collections had a black Barbie aswell, including their iconic yearly Christmas Holiday Barbie. They just weren't as diverse/inclusive as Bratz. Us Asians, Latinas, Middle Easterners etc def weren't represented but most of us kids growing up didn''t care about that stuff, we loved Barbie for her pretty outfits and pretty hair and her versatility, Barbie wasn't one-dimensional. And personal opinions aside, Barbie's cultural impact, legacy and iconic status is undeniable, and way more profound than Bratz.
To us Millennials Barbie is very special cause she was a huge part of our childhood growing up. Bratz was too and I like both but i personally prefer Barbie over Bratz, imo Bratz was very much of it's time with mainly just y2k teen-y fashion, whereas Barbie is very timeless and fashion-wise way more versatile.

I love both the Barbie and Bratz form of femininity. Barbie is a softer more whimsical and wholesome and individually focused vibe. The Bratz were modern, edgy, mature and more about girl group expression if that makes sense.

So I grew up with barbie and monster high instead lol (which I didn’t overall mind especially because I love both barbie and monster high too lol).

Yes, while I think Bratz had more depth in their branding, aesthetically Barbie is an institution. Barbie’s presence is so steeped into our cultural landscape, across the world you can call a woman a Barbie and everyone will be familiar with which form of the feminine archetype she occupies. To say Barbie is iconic is an understatement.There’s McDonalds, Coca Cola, and Barbie. She’s an effigy of the ideal woman in Western society and around the world, whether that’s good or bad. And the recent Barbie releases have been groundbreaking in representations of diversity. Barbie’s personality is bland tho. Bratz have better style and a sassier design. I’m partial to vintage Barbie’s kitschy vixen mold. But alas, Bratz are very much of their time. Undeniably y2k even in appearance, which means a little dated.

I was so obsessed with bratz, barbie just didnt connect to me, the denim, aesthetics look, and the girls personalities being so different and even how diverse they looked, it just pulled me in so much more, I could see strong sisterhood with different girls

im not really feminine but i grew up with barbie and i used to watch it every weekend, it was my dream to wear long princess dresses like her. the movies had a special part in my heart like winx, both of these shows made me start drawing actually. for the unnecceary love interests, i never cared about them tbh and since they were mostly at the end of the movies i ignored them completely. i dont know why people look at a pşece of media, especially cartoons, and think this is what women are like so this should be what i become. like i never had those thoughts. i never looked at my barbie dolls and thought oh they are skinny i must be like them, they wear pink and ultra feminine stuff i must do it too, i just made them scissor each other in peace. later on i discovered sam&mickey's doll stopparody animations futuring barbie and her family and i still watch it lol. brats is way better in inclusivity for sure tho but i'll always be team barbie just because of the nostalgia.
I remember when Bratz were criticised for being vapid fashionistas, they are very 2000s but it's easy to see why they were more popular than Barbies, they were a little edgier and less pink and girly and the 2000s was when there started being this demand for this kind of representation of women to be mainstream so that little girls had more than just princesses and sterotypically feminine things, dolls like Monster High, Rainbow High, Ever After High ect. are all starting to make Barbie look like a vintage doll for adults more than children, I still love the old dolls and movies but she feels kinda irrelevant now with little girls actually wanting to see dolls that represent their imagination and appearance

I agree with you on some points, like the Bratz’s personalities being more realistic. However I still believe it’s good to have a character who teaches moral lessons , like Barbie. It’s fine that you like bratz more, I just think we need a good mix of those two different kinds of character. The relatable one and the one who’s a good role model.
I had more barbies due to Bratz just being a bit more expensive and my mom growing up with barbie, but I still had a few bratz (the strange big headed bratz baby dolls). I was more obsessed with monster high though despite not having any monster high dolls (idk why I never asked for any at holidays). Then I got into American girl dolls and saved up for one of those in middle school and that ate up any money for other dolls since they are soooo expensive.

I wasn’t even subconsciously thinking of the idea of diversity before, nor I did not really cared, I used to not even have an idea that people gives importance to it. But the reason why I loved Bratz more, is their REALISTIC STYLE you could try in real life, at least find something similar looking to their outfits. I had so much dolls of them. Barbie? I loved the movies, but I had zero interest on purchasing their dolls, idk why, most girls I knew was obsessed with Barbie dolls, but I din’t felt the same excitement as they had for Barbie dolls, I once tried to purchase a Barbie doll, then ended up forgetting I had it, it just became a house display. Unlike when I had the Bratz, I had so much excitement as I completed them, where I can’t help but get their latest clothes on them.
I believe Barbie was better (don't get me wrong, they had more time to do more variations) but Mattel did amazing back in the late 90s and 00s with all the games they released showing Barbie working in different fields (marine biologist, detective chasing a kidnapper, horserider, etc.) I believe that changed a bit, Bratz focused more only on, well, fashion. While Bratz had more range of colours and fashion styles. Barbie's games (if you choose the mattel detective one) has her tech friend who is also in a wheelchair, was actually nice for a change to show more characters, she is also the one that rescues Ken. I know Barbie also faced many scandals that are horryfying earlier on due to also being a product of their time. But she also had every profession ever and in the games she is a pretty active character that actual does actual stuff.
I don't agree the 90s barbie were all about poise, soft femininity and pink, because she had amazing roles in games being a badass character. But, again, that's a meta of the whole franchise and I could understand how the "barbiecore" was presented as that kind of femininity to some, because barbie made the cliché first and then disrupted it.
I personally was more of a barbie fan, still am tbh. But i can totally see the gaps barbie had that bratz filled so well!!

Both brands have their iconic moments. In my opinion barbie was at its peak during the 2000s. Mattel releasing the movies and barbie dolls to go with it was a great marketing move. Bratz were definitely the cooler and mature brand of the two. I think bratz are better than barbie now since mattel is no longer creative or detailed as it used to be.

Im a trans girl who’s a huge tomboy and even before i cameout when i was a kid i LOVED Bratz, the music, the TV show, the PS2 games, their attitudes and personalities really made me love them, and of course i loved the way the dolls looked, Bratz showed us that being a girl is more than pink dresses, blonde hair and wanting to be a princess, being a girl is being yourself

i think they serve two different purposes. barbie is for dreaming, thats why the best barbies are the exaggerated 135 careers, fairy princess ones. they are fun and imaginative and why the movies are so great. however bratz dolls almost never miss and thats because their down to earth in a way modern barbie wishes she was, they are fashionable and cute but feel way more human then modern barbie who tries to be down to earth but ends up being so basic thats she's not anyone. barbie is so much better when shes in the clouds.
I loved barbie movies (still do) but didn't have them, but I had a ton of Bratz. I loved them for their fashion sense and beautiful clothes, it was a whole cult following with my friend too.
Iooking back i gave to admit they’re distaste and shaming of the girly characters who were modeled after Barbie doesn’t sit right with me especially as someone who enjoyed both. Yes the character were the villains, but they’re appearance and interests could’ve been different. Hyper femininity was demonized a lot in my childhood. And I mean bratz did kinda fail and flop after a bit of success does not have the space as Barbie. Today Barbie has the most diverse doll lines.
