- Its stats are better, its moves are pretty much just as bad. Can Golbat surprise and take a top spot on the tier list?

Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch. - Hry
The thing about Zubat to Golbat is like you're upgrading from a rusty kitchen knife to a rusty dagger.
Well, both of them do come with the risk of tetanus...
A completely dull dagger will easily penetrate the victim's body if you apply slightly more than "none" of stabbing force. As opposed to a dull knife which could too, but with extremely high chance of folding in half instead.
*Idea:* If there ever comes a point where you've officially soloed Gen I with every possible Pokemon, you should save Arbok as the last one for a potential "That's all, folks!" callback to the Pokerap. :P
Caterpie, Metapod, Kakuna, and Magikarp cannot do so. Even with Dragon Rage on Magikarp, it's not very likely if at all possible.
@@SoraDonaldGoofy99 Right, forgot about the whole Normal-type Struggle thing. Fixed :)
That'd be funny. Though I have the feeling he's leaving Kadabra to be the last.
A gen 1 challenge I've done that I'd love to see is to only use pokemon who can evolve but you HAVE to evolve/ditch them if they can evolve (level, stone, or trade). So no Alakazam (can't evolve). No Kadabra (could evolve via trade). No level 50 Abra (could have evolved via level). It's doable but crazy hard
@@derekcline950 IS that doable? if I've understood right you can only use Pokemon that can potentially evolve but you aren't able to evolve yet?
I am struggling to think of a team that could fit that criteria and beat the league. Maybe if you allow items in battle but even then I'm not sure its doable.
LET'S GET BATTY!!!
With this run he might just wing it
@@thelucidexperience hopefully it doesn't bite him in the ass
ayyy
Batty Coda?
That's mean booty where I'm from
We're all trying to get some batty my brother
I love how you've mocked Blaine in so many other runs, and now in this one he just turns into a Master of the Trolling Arts 😂 Can't wait for Cafeteria Chef Surge to get his revenge on you someday, it's gonna be epic!
Totally! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think he has been blocked by newly appointed gift shop assistant Surge during I think the Sparrow run he gets fucked pretty hard by Surge lol
Blaine is actually terrifying when he gets to use his strong attacks. Ponyta and Rapidash with Fire Spin are not necessarily jokes, and they can set you up for defeat by Arcanine with Growl and Tail Whip. When Arcanine uses Fire Blast repeatedly, and Take Down for good measure, he is terrifying, especially because it's hard to take it out in one shot. Because Golbat gave the team too many opportunities to set up and attack, Blaine could eventually take Golbat down consistently. Also Fire Spin + Super Potion lol.
Unfortunately Surge doesn't have many options, and there's no broken strategies with X-Speed. Also, if he's too tough, he's easy to avoid until later.
Swift is the only move in Gen 1 that doesn't have to worry about a Gen 1 miss (swift skips the accuracy roll all together).
True, that effect is also applied to all moves if you use an X Accuracy.
Do you really think JROSE doesn't know that. He's used swift in a challenge video before because of it
Due to a bug (shocking, I know) in japanese gen 1 games swift still has a 1/256 chance to miss (and can also miss due to evasion boosts) UNLESS the enemy has a substitute
@@RukaIXR Well >I< didn't know that so i am glad OP gave this very fun fact for all of us to enjoy
Bide too actually!
A Pokemon I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet is Farfetch'd. Has abysmal stats, all normal attacking moves save for Peck and Fly, and potentially over-reliant on Swords Dance.
Why the heck can Farfetch'd learn Fly? It's 3 feet shorter than a Golbat, not to mention almost 100 pounds lighter too!
Gen 1 being Gen 1.
The funny thing is i got the in game trade farfetch'd named Dux. When I first learned of the missingno glitch, Dux was the first pokemon I rare candied up to lv100 and swept the elite 4 with Cut lol
Farfetch'd is amazing though. It has to be true because there is only one
@@TheSkullkid16I think the only thought that went into fly was "is it a bird?"
Duduo can learn fly and it literally has no wings lmao
@@ngotemna8875It runs on the spot to fly
Enjoying the vids, keep going!
Just want to say that Surge should get promoted every time you avoid him to gain more levels, this happens in quite a few videos. The big difference with Surge versus Misty/Brock is that he can be ignored easily until Fly, and it isn't right to demote him when you get easy wins, and not promote him when you avoid him, because he would wreck you lol.
Yeah, how dare he talk this way about Playground Attendant Surge?
Surge has a Lanturn in Stadium 2, so maybe he was in the Navy ;))
@@rainpooper7088 Unfortunately he is no longer a Playground Attendant. He is now Unpayed Playground Attendant Intern Surge!
Wing Attack is base 35 in Gen 1. Double-edge is Golbat's best move as it doen't learn Fly until Gen 4 (where it debuts the move Brave Bird which it learns by breeding)
ah yes, golbat, my favorite bird
@@eaterofkirbs4917 It's actually the only non-bird to learn it. Everything else is a duck, chicken, swallow, hawk, eagle, swan, owl, etc. Tapu-Koko even got it solely because he's a rooster.
@@booshywaters3726 tapu koko is a rooster? damn i never knew
@@booshywaters3726 Koko gets it but Blaziken doesn't smh
@darkfire714
Blaziken learns Brave Bird via level up, it even starts with it in later generations.
Was always a fan of the Zubat tree. They are so common but involve into one of the coolest Pokemon ever in later generations.
I'd say strongest. Golbat 's cool factor is indirectly proportionate to his sphericity.
I mean, Golbat is alright but after the mess that is Zubat they kinda owed us Crobat lol! I don't think it's unreasonable to expect at least ONE pokemon in a line is actually good and not necessarily in a meta/competitive way
Crobat is in the Golem school of looking nothing like the thing it evolved from.
@@Vmac1394They both look exactly like what they came from, just with two added limbs.
If anything Bellsprout is the weird one. Starts as a small root, ends up a giant flesh eating fly trap.
Let’s go! I hope Golbat does well. Nice Count at the beginning too!
Bite was a normal move in gen 1, later dark. But it should always have been: Poison.
I think Cut should've been Bug-type, too.
I agree with this. Almost all bites have high chance for bacterial infection in the real world.
I'm guessing it's Dark because Dark types fight dirty and biting is often considered a dirty move, but considering Dark was considered special when all of its moves were clearly physical assault-based and would eventually all become physical to the point where Gen 4 had to invent new moves like Dark Pulse just to throw special Dark types a bone, yeah, Bite probably should have been assigned to a physical type like Poison.
Omg the colors. The asthetic! It's top notch Jrose. Love your content so much. Please please consider making a Playlist with all your runs together thanks for your content much love!
You know it's quite easy to make your own playlist with those videos in
He already has a playlist of his 'Kanto Solo Runs'. Same with 'Impossible Challenges'.
cmon guys let Jrose cook
So Golbat was NOWHERE near as nightmarish as Zubat was. That's nice to know. Just a shame it only amounts to "average" luck for Golbat in the end. Also super weird BLAINE was harder than SABRINA.
I mean, no duh? It’s the evolution
Some Evos are leagues better though and others are kinda meh. Sometimes you may not even want an Evo because of the typing, etc...
Golbat's problem is that its moves are weak. Blaine's pokemon are bulkier than Sabrina's, giving them more chances to actually do something.
Zubat gains the second most stat points by evolving of any gen 1 pokemon, exceeded only by Magikarp.
I remember having two Golbats back in the day when I played Red version. Named them Razor and Drainer. One had Razor Wind and the other had Mega Drain.
Which one is which?
Razor wind... The move I nsver got what was it's purpose. Realtively late game tm, normal (not flying???) type, few pp-s, weak, takes two turns and inaccurate. I mean there are other weak moves, but they are usually level up moves with many pp-s (or bugged, like focus energy). But this is a TM move for absolutley zero niche to use.
@@nyarizsolt4525 You know it sucked when they actually REMOVED IT FROM GEN 2 COMPLETELY. Yes, really. No Pokémon in Gen 2 can learn Razor Wind through any means. You can get a Pokémon with Razor Wind in Gen 2 by transferring from Gen 1, but without a Gen 1 game, no way to obtain this move in Gen 2.
James' Golbat learned Mega Drain at some point in the anime didn't it ?
Edit : I also just realized that the game gives you a Lapras at that point because you should have Surf at that point but you're not *required* to have a water Pokémon on your team nor even have a rod and Silph Co is the last thing you can do before having to go to fight Sabrina and Blaine. Such a brilliant way to bypass the map issues.
Vermillion is required and it's not unreasonable to expect players to 100% explore Pewter, Cerulean and Vermillion. Snorlax has to be passed and it seems terribly unlikely to not discover the Fisherman Bridge Snorlax considering it is near where you have to catch Drowzee; since you can't get Gengar or Alakazam without trading, it's hard to get a fully evolved Psychic type unless you go for Hypno which is useful for passing through Lavendar Tower and can do Hypnosis/Dream Eater while resisting Sabrina.
It's very unlikely to not check out East of Vermillion/South of Lavendar although it isn't required. It's even the closer place to use the Poké Flute to Lavendar.
I think Lapras was in Silph Co to be a pseudo legendary on the level of the Fossil Pokémon or the Dragons. To get Surf requires reaching Safari Zone which has Water Pokémon I think. 🤔
But Lapras is odd. It doesn't truly have an explanation, like the Free Eevee. It's a mystery of Pokémon.
@@darthparallax5207 I do agree that it's hard not to have captured a Water Pokemon at that point (or any that knows Surf), but I know that 4-year-old me could have very well skipped everything you just mentioned lmao
I wanted to point it out mostly as a brilliant way to solve what could have felt like a massive oversight with a minimum of means and still making it work in the grand scheme of things (and giving you lowkey one of the best visually designed Mon for free)
James didn't have a Golbat. That one random person Ash Kingler'd all over in the Kanto League had a Golbat with Mega Drain, but we never see it use it.

Fun fact: Haze is not fine sometimes because it removes all badge boosts, even the default intended ones
Yes, jrose makes a point of that in every other video
Love the zubat line! Also the colour scheme is really nice on this one
I would LOVE to see you do a side by side of a Gen 1 run next to a FR/LG run with the same pokemon just to see ho drastically different they would be
Better than Moltres?! What?!?!?! Nice!
You sound pretty happy in general in this run. Hope all is well, J!
One of the benefits of using leech life for Erica too is that in Gen 1 I believe poison was weak against bug so you had a quadruple effective move against all the poison grass types
Yep, bug was actually a pretty strong offensive type in gen 1, that's why it only had crappy moves, because a move like megahorn would be super busted in gen 1.
And against a quad-weak target like vilepume or exeggutor, it deals the same damage as Strength (assuming no STAB on either move, but still...)
Yea, 20 base power with quad-effectiveness is still just 80 base power. So it's good, but very situationally so. And the game has the audacity to recommend bugs against the psychic gym, when most bugs are also poison type and lack any good bug-type attacks. I remember being pretty scandalized by this when I figured it out as a kid. :D
@@danielhale1 More outrageous for me was Sabrina mentioning her weakness to Ghosts, when ghost doesn't hit psychic in gen 1....
@@ngotemna8875Agreed! The misinformation was insane. Your first opponent in pokemon Gen 1 was always the game itself. I love it and have fond memories but... don't trust it. Focus Energy is bugged. The NPCs are devious. The shorts are a lie!
Now I want a director's cut with entirely vampire voiceover
You always bless me when i had an awful day JRose. Always a pleasure to listen!
the 1/256 glitch only affects 100 accuracy moves, the glitch is not a 1/256 chance to bypass the accuracy check and miss anyway, it's caused by the accuracy check on 100 accuracy moves checking if the rng function (which generates a number between 0 and 255) generates a number less than 255, instead of less than or equal to 255. This can't affect any other accuracy values since converting %chance to chance in 256 requires approximation anyway, all that would change is whether they overshot or undershot the accuracy value.
On pokemon showdown all moves have a lowered accuracy
It is possible to encounter a 255 accuracy roll on moves with less than 100% accuracy, so the glitch can still happen. It's just tougher to understand if a miss was caused by the glitch or by the intended algorithm. For example, a 90% accurate move would hit if there's a roll of 229 or less (maybe it's 230, idk how the rounding is handled, but the premise is still the same). If the 1/256 glitch did not exist, there would be 26 total rolls where a 90% move would miss, but because it exists, there are 27. If you don't look at the actual code, you don't know if you hit one of the 26 intended rolls or the one unintended one
Oh my lord that Count gave me whiplash. That's a classic Jrose bit!
Never realised that Agatha is actually a poison-type trainer and not a ghost-type trainer.
Did you realize that Lance is a Flying type trainer in Crystal?
@@gigajake668but they have big sharp teeth, that must mean that they are dragons right?
She's both :) Lorelei's Ice/Water, Bruno's Fighting/Rock, Agatha's Ghost/Poison and Lance's Dragon/Flying. It's quite unique.
@@luckylarita1630I wonder why that seems to be greatly diminished in later Gens? It's one unique quirk of Gen 1 Elite 4, that they could be considered dual-type leaders. Gen 2 has Lance himself again, and they play around with that in Gen 9 with Larry and his Normal/Flying duties, but not at the same time.
@@luckylarita1630 Lorelei's Jynx isn't Water, and Agatha's Arbok isn't Ghost
I actually cheered when you finally beat Blane! That was the most frustrating battle I’ve seen on any of your runs.
I forgot I was at work and immediately clicked on this video. Forgot my computer was at full blast, and luckily Jrose starts the video by laughing. Gotta be more careful next time, can’t wait to see how this one turns out
How have I not noticed till now that you stopped doing the little intro tune at the start of your videos. I know I'm really late but I never really noticed that it was gone till now. tbh I kinda miss it but it doesn't stop your videos from still being awesome jrose, keep up the good work.
Great work, as always. Thanks for giving me something to watch on my lunch break, Jrose & AJ.
Glad I had something to watch tonight at work. Thank you for the upload and happy with how it preformed. Can't wait for the next one already. I know I am anxiously awaiting the mid stage trades to make their introduction.

The Count has returned!
I was expecting an immediate The Count impression and you did not disappoint.
Keep it up boss. You are doing a great job with these. Been watching a ton of these gen 1s especially
Hoping for a fraction of your success out here XD Cheers!
So excited when I heard you talking like that in the beginning. And then you just killed my dreams.
I would love to see a stat on how many attacks are actually used in a run vs the 1/256 glitch to see how lucky/unlucky a run is
Perhaps you should make a third list: this list should be filled with a combination of 2nd stage Pokémon (Ivysaur, Charmeleon, Wartortle, etc.;) Pokémon that can evolve in future generations (Onyx, Seadra, Porygon, etc.;) and low stats Pokémon (Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Jynx, etc.)
I’d personally argue that for the sake of future proofing, “future evolution” only be “does it get a new evolution in the next 4 gens”, since Pokemon like Ursaring in GSC and Primeape in RBY don’t feel anemic in the same way something like Seadra or Golbat feels anemic. They have faults, sure, but they don’t FEEL “NFE”
@spindash64
Yeah, Ursaring was one of the few regularly evolving Pokémon in Gen 2 that actually got up to 500 BST in its final stage (not counting the starters, I legit think it's just Ursaring, its counterpart Donphan and Ampharos who's not in Crystal), it's crazy that that's the one that got an evolution. To put things in perspective and since you mentioned that particular Pokémon, Primeape is actually stronger in terms of BST than most fully evolved GSC originals.
@@spindash64
Scyther as well. Scyther is hella strong for a NFE mon
Well played and congrats on finishing this heck run! And (besides how horrid this run is), I can see why you're looking forward to Fire Red: you're more then half-way through this series, so double congrats!
YAY! Another Jrose video, just in time to brighten my day :)
Woo, more Jrose content! I’m happy to see the RB tier list continue! Spoilers and criticism below:
I will admit, I was annoyed with how stubborn you were being with Blaine (after that accidental battle where you nearly won but then lost, I feel like that was the universe telling you that you needed to level up more), especially because it gets a bit hard to get invested in certain major battles. When you rely on luck like that rather than realizing sooner that leveling up was a practical solution, it turns certain fights into lottery simulators, especially considering there were plenty of trainers to fight. I’m glad you later acknowledged when Golbat needed to level up when fighting the Elite Four, though. That did make things better, especially because I doubt that relying on luck to get by Blaine gave Golbat an unfair advantage, but it did make that part hard to sit through.
Always a good day to see a Jrose video!!! Love your content
Awesome video as always!
Awesome, a good video to relax with while doing my shift. ❤

I finally figured out how jrose does his voiceovers where he achieves the omniscient narration style, and still reacting genuinely to surprising circumstances.
How?
These videos just keep getting better and better. I love the color scheme in this video. Plus, Golbat wasn't that bad considering. It's not the best, but not the worst either.
It's possible that Rock Throw was so inaccurate to balance it being used against the player, since you probably don't have anything that resists rock at that point, and a lot of things weak to it.
Not to mention that Geodude has that nutty base attack
I think the Rock type was just designed to be inaccurate in general, there are barely any 100% accurate Rock type moves to this day, especially from the earlier generations
@@DJFracus
For physical attacks I think it’s justaccelerock, smack down, and salt cure with 100% accuracy. With Smack Down having the highest base power of 50. Power Gem is overall the strongest perfect accurate Rock move and it still isn’t great. Though with how good rock coverage is I don’t think that’s a bad thing really. Seems like a fair balancing mechanic
I have watched all of your videos for these. I can't wait for a few more of my favourites like vulpix.
