  • During the Great Depression, people did not waste anything - including corn cobs! After the corn was cut off of the cobs, they were used to make Corn Cob Soup. This is a very simple and easy recipe. You can add anything that you want to it - rice, noodles, vegetables, crackers, etc.

    I use everything that can possibly be used as well. I just finished dehydrating my tomato skins leftover from salsa and stuff. I will powder it and use it a a bullion for soups. All my veggies scraps go into the freezer for broth making.

    I've had some really great corn on the cob this year...but I don't think there's enough left on the cob for this once I'm through with it!😂 Now, if I was cutting the kernels instead of chomping them, I'd absolutely either scrape off the remnants, or use the cob to flavor a soup. It's really good to flavor any kind of soup stock (chicken, vegetable, pork, clam chowder, etc.), especially if you only have one or two cobs on hand at a time.
    Thanks again, Grandma! Always a treat!

WHen the chickens were done cleaning the cobs I collected them for fire starters, the silks I dried for tea, and the husks I used in a wreath but the middle clean ones could also be used for tamales. I also made my own version of substitute corn syrup and canned it along with the extra boiled corn juice I canned for using later on. I use everything up to the max! I never thought of making boiled cobs into a soup! Thanks!

    I wonder how this compares with (Chinese) Corn Soup, ingredients and cooking method. The saltine crackers, regular or low sodium, would add any salt you want for the corn and soup. -- And this probably compared all with the corn pudding (Native American) recipe you did. It'd be very nice for soup stock other uses. I'll bet that is very soothing, and nutritious. You/d get a lot of good from the corn cobs. Good stuff! Thanks, Grandma Feral.

    • @benw9949
      @benw9949 Před 11 měsíci

      Tip: Grandma added 2 cups of water because she didn't want it to go dry or the corn cobs to go uncovered. If you add 2.5 cups, then that gives 7.5 cups overall, which gives 1.5 cups of water for each of the five corn cobs used, so it would scale up nicely. Haha, I'm a traditionalist: when we ate corn on the cob fresh, all it needed was butter and salt, a little pepper if people liked that, so the soup is good this way, and saltine crackers crumbled into soup is right up there with that usual thing. -- I miss my own grandmother/s homemade vegetable sop, or with beef (roast or chuck cubed) in the soup.

    I scrape the cobs after I cut the corn off, then boil the cobs to make a broth for corn chowder. Love it with BLT sandwiches. When I was a kid, we went to the Farmer's Market and got bushels of white field corn or Trucker's White. It was the best corn ever. We cut it off the cob, scraped the cob and them my Mother blanched it. After it cooled, we put it in containers to freeze. Can't find that corn anywhere now.
