- This is a very old recipe, probably from before the Great Depression, for Creamed Tuna On Toast. It is cheap to make and there aren't many ingredients. My mother used to make this recipe often, especially during Lent.

You REALLY need to do a cookbook for us .
Thank you for suggesting a cookbook👩🏻
Yes! I would totally buy one!!
❤
I agree. Her recipes have really helped us out during really hard times here.
Id buy one
My Mom used can salmon and peas. I have to try it with tuna. Thanks for sharing.
Next time I will try salmon instead of tuna. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Oh, what a great idea for the salmon! I have a can that needs using...just wasn't feeling the salmon patties I bought it for. I like your idea much better!
@@patriciamorgan6545 I add the salmon liquid as well. Dont add it if it's too salty. I think there are salt free versions as well.
@@Linda_Mayoh Oh, that sounds good! And easier, too. Gives it more flavor, and soupiness that I would enjoy (I often make my childhood 'tuna noodle casserole' into a stovetop soup version, without any pasta product or baking at all). Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely try it!
Love the lamp grandma feral. Thanks for sharing the recipe perfect for Ash Wednesday
Glad you like the Lamp. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Great job Grandma! Love your lamp too!
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
I enjoy watching videos of old-fashioned recipes. By the way, your Charlie lamp is cute. I remember the Starkist commercials.
Glad you like Lamp and watching the videos👩🏻
My aunt used to make for us kids back in the early 60s. Love your lamp. Its adorable
I love the lamp! I remembered it when I saw it! I loved him and his hat.
Glad you love the Charlie The Tuna Lamp. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
I remembered it, too!🐟
I'm just loving these depression era recipes! I also love the 1950's recipes too. Thank you Grandma Feral♥♥♥
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Many of my friends say they don't like it but my grandmother raised me on this recipe. Ita delicious
A lot of people may dislike this meal but we were raised like you on this recipe and we love it. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
I love the gravy minus the tuna
Tuna wiggle. I don’t know why my grandma called it that but she did. We loved it! 💝
Thank you for sharing what your Grandma called it👩🏻
That’s so cute. Maybe because a fish does wiggle in the water. 🐟🌊
What a great name!😃🐟
Patricia Morgan It is very cute. 😃🐟
My grandma called it tuna wiggle too.
My grandma made this with hard boiled eggs, she called it cream chicken on toast because my dad wouldn’t eat tuna. As a newlywed my mom made it for dinner one night and my dad saw her put tuna in the dish. I can only imagine what he said to her... 🤣 He had to call his mom to find out she’d been telling him it was "Chicken of the Sea" for all those years. I love your lamp! ♥️
Thank you for giving me a good laugh. Glad you like my Charlie the Tuna lamp. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
My mom made us a tuna/rice/peas/mushroom soup casserole with crushed potato chips for the topping.
I still make it occasionally for the hell of it. Tastes good with chicken, too.
Thanks for sharing that your Mom would make a soup casserole. Interesting but since Grandpa dislikes peas i would not try. Thank you for watching and have a good day👩🏻
A great recipe for tuna instead of the ordinary tuna sandwich. Looks so good.
it could work with canned Salmon or other fish as well , over rice or Egg noodles or pasta dice some Shrimp up and add em or crab your only limited by your imagination and taste budds as it was many of us had this recipe as a old homey comfort food item so we might feel less apt to change was was cheep simple to make and less then 10 minutes to fix
Love peas with this!
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
My mom used to make creamed tuna, but she usually served it on rice. She could feed a family of 5 on one can of tuna. I still like it (though I'm with Grandpa on the peas). Mom's best recipes were the frugal ones she learned as a young woman in the depression.
Thank you for sharing how your Mom serviced the creamed Tuna. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Thank you for your most thorough explanations and amazing recipes!
Also, thank you, Grandpa, for your service to our country.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
He does not know what he is missing does he ma. Nice video!
Grandpa says, "no peas please as no peas peacefully pleases me " I'd take the peas, please. I was in the service, also...we all liked SOS but they only tended to have it at midnight chow. It was good for a belly full! Nice recipe, Grandma, and your taste in lighting impeccable and deep-sea-ted, :rimshot: I'll be here all week everyone! 😂
Ba- dum- dum! 🥁
My mother would also put a little diced hardboiled egg. This is one of my favs.
Grandpa hates peas and I do not like any recipe using hard boiled eggs. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Yes...instead of tuna add hard boiled eggs
Creamed eggs on toast. Can add bacon crumbles too
This looks like comfort food❤️
I’ll take peas on my plate, too, please. 😋 Thank you for your service, grandpa. 🇺🇸
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Great for using up leftovers, too, chicken, turkey, any kind of fish. I like to make creamed chicken or tuna on rice. I also like to add in sauteed onion, mushrooms, and celery or broccoli or other veg - like your peas. If you can get fresh asparagus, try it with this! 😋
And Grandpa, I was thinking the same thing - it's just a variation on SOS.
Thank for sharing about all the additions you add to this meal. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Grandma, thank you so much for the captions! I have auditory processing disorder and it's sometimes really difficult for me to understand what's being said in a video. I hope this becomes a common feature here :)
CZcams has it that you can turn on Captions and it will come up on all the videos you watch. I hope this helps you. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
My mom used to make this for dinner in the seventies. I forget all about this recipe. I don't like seafood or fish. Going to try this with canned chicken though. 💕💕💕
This meal would be good using a can of chicken instead of tuna. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Mine did too! In the good old 70’s :)
You can make it using hard-boiled eggs as well.
Yep, mom made it in the 70s too. The lamp….hilarious.
I'll bet this recipe was the predecessor to my beloved tuna noodle casserole! This was real comfort food from my childhood, in the 60s and 70s. If you didn't actually go the extra step to make a baked casserole with crispy breadcrumbs on top, it became a quick and easy "open and dump" stovetop recipe that Mom could put together when she got home from work (with a little help from me, opening and prepping all those cans). Now that I am cutting out most pasta and carbs, I have further morphed this recipe to omit the 'noodles' (elbows or small shells) altogether, and just make it a soup instead, still from all cans, or it won't have the same nostalgic taste: cream of mushroom soup, mushrooms, tuna, and yes, peas.
Grandma, I'll have to try your version of this, but it will be as a soup, or maybe over vegetables like broccoli, because I rarely have bread in the house. (I think, though, that I'd rather have the bread!😉)
Grandpa and I like bread but we usually don’t eat white bread only occasionally. I will be making tuna casserole because we always have it during lent with noodles of course. Keep warm with this snow storm👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeralGlad to hear you'll be making it, too. I'm curious whether you use noodles and actually bake it into a casserole? Mom always used elbow macaroni for hers, but I like using the small shells (when I splurge on carbs), because the peas joyously nestle inside, like pearls in an oyster! 🦪 Too bad Grandpa won't indulge in that happy accident...but you can!😉
We're seeing a little let up in the snow/sleet, so I'm getting ready to go out and do a little preemptive shovelling. And feed the ferals, of course! Stay warm and safe!
Grandma Feral..........Thank you for this recipe, this looks so delicious!! Wondering, does Grandpa like dried dill? Perhaps, you could add that to his meal, instead of peas. Just a thought. Thank you again, for the recipe.
Tammy Lynn Schulz. ❤😊
P.S. A special THANK YOU, to you Grandpa, for your service. ❤🇺🇸
Yes Grandpa likes dried dill. Next time I make this meal I will add some for Grandpa👩🏻
Love the recipe! I definitely know what S.O.S stands for & I love it too! 😂😍
My Mother used to make this! I’m almost 70 yrs old and these recipes are bringing back some great memories. Thanks for sharing.
Glad I can bring back great memories. Thank you for watching and have a good day👩🏻

I love your depression recipes, it reminds me of my grandmas recipes
I love learning from you , and I appreciate you and Grandpas' company 💗 💓 💖
We are glad we can show you recipes that are easy to make. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
A lot of the time, people take the food they have on their table (or even the food that are readily available on the shelves at supermarkets) for granted. It is not easy to imagine a time when one would need to turn to recipes like this one in order to ensure one's family gets fed every day. Thank you for sharing this recipe, it not only made me curious to try it myself, it also reminds me just how lucky we are that our generation has not have to go through what previous generations went through (knock wood!).
You have to count your blessings. I learned about the depression from my Mom and her family. My Aunt told me many times that she was so hungry during the depression. One day she was walking down the street and spotted a piece of molded bread and she picked it up and ate the whole thing. She said it was so good. I never will forget that story. My Mom always told me she prayed no one would ever have to go through such a terrible time. Thank you for watching and have a good day👩🏻
Totally impressed by Charlie and this recipe! An inspiration for an easy alternative to tuna casserole.
Glad you like the recipe and Charlie. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
I'm with you Grandma. Got to have those peas! Thanks for sharing! Oh the lamp is fantastic!💙
Glad you are with me with adding peas and you like Charlie. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Grandma, you and Grandpa are adorable! I've been watching your videos on this cold and snowy day and they take me back to my childhood (I was a child of the 70's). Just goes to show that a good recipe can stand strong through any era!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words❤️Grandma👩🏻&Grandpa👨🍳
My Mom made this for us 9 kids all the time. I just got a craving so I looked up a recipe and found your video. Thank you.
Hi thank you for sharing that your Mom made this recipe. It is one of my favorite meals. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Great new/old use for tuna! Love the lamp. My Mom loved SOS Grandpa! lol

This looks yummy. The Grandmas tuna lamp, and her and her husbands sweet conversations during dinner absolutely warms my heart. Love this !!!
Thank you for your kind words and for watching👩🏻
Thanks, Grandma! It looks delicious. ☺️
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Know that I so very much value/appreciate your recipes. They are so fundamental and adjustable. I was born when parents were in 40’s. So I ate old times foods from the depression times. I am 70 now. My Mom watched a lot of Julia Child shows. Mom prepared a lot of kidney stew, lamb and sautéed liver. I know that I need to get back to cooking more…..organ meats. I shop at a local Sprouts Marketplace…..near me. They have lots of organic meats for sale. (Grass fed, etc.).
Ahna. Atlanta Georgia
Hi Ahna enjoyed reading your comment. I never had kidney stew. My Mom would make lamb and liver for us. She also liked to watch the Julia Child shows. I have heard of Sprouts Marketplace but have never been to one. Have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻
Hello everyone, That looks really good, I would like the peas too, maybe even the ones with the little pearl onions for a change once in a while. Thanks for sharing your recipe, take care.
You can add whatever ingredients you would like to this meal. Chicken would be good instead of the tuna or peas and carrots. Thank you for watching and take care👩🏻
LOVE your recipes! The Charlie Tuna Lamp is a real piece of Americana. Thanks so much
for sharing your recipes with all of us. And a special Thank You to Grandpa for his Service to our Country. God Bless you and all of America.
Hi thank you for your kind words❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳
sounds good. gonna make this. SOS. I've heard that term before and know what it stands for.
Glad to hear you will be making this meal. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Great job, from a trained chefs point of view. Brilliant use of ingredients... Good for... Kindness your way [ Lochness Scottish Highlands ]
Thank you for your kind words and for watching👩🏻
I love that lamp. It is a keepsake item. I also love creamed tuna on toast. Thank you for taking time to make these recipes to share with people. Also tell Grandpa that I do know what S.O.S means.
I am glad to hear you like creamed tuna on toast also and enjoyed seeing my Charlie lamp. Grandpa wants you to know S O S means Shit On A Shingle. Thank you for watching and have a good day👩🏻
I love that Charlie the Tuna lamp. I remember back in the day, companies used to have a lot of these types of products available for purchase in order to promote and sell their product. I have never seen Charlie the Tuna lamp though. He is really cute. I remember my mom sending in these things to purchase for us kids. Like the scooter pie doll, etc.
Hi I love my Charlie the Tuna lamp. I still have a few items that my children received in the mail sent to them from my sister in law. She saved all kinds of labels and bar codes to get free items. That is something companies don’t do anymore. Thank you for watching❤️Grandma
My mom started her creamed tuna the same way, but with a big family, she put everything in a big pot. Once the rouge was done, she poured in a gallon of whole milk, the tuna, and peas. It simmered and slowly thickened by dinner time. Great for chicken or turkey as well. All time favorite! Great video.
Hi thank you for sharing how your mom made her creamed tuna for a large family. Yes it is great with chicken or turkey. Thank you so much for watching and have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻
I love your videos. I going to make this for lunch.
Glad you will be making this meal for lunch. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
Yumm
You know what’s nice about this recipe is I pretty much always have all theese ingredients on hand and it is quick and delicious!! Love this one and I’m sure my child will also!
Love your recipes. Thank you. I really liked television commercials way back when. Actually enjoyable, now commercials are “rapping” garbage.
You are so right the old commercials are the best. Thank you for watching👩🏻
My mom used to make this. I love it with peas!
Thank you for sharing that your Mom made this meal and you love it with peas👩🏻
It's wonderful to see you making this delicious recipe. My husband and I had creamed eggs for breakfast this morning 😊. A good white sauce is beneficial to many delicious recipes. Thank you 😍
Thank you for watching👩🏻
Oh, how interesting! I've never heard of creamed eggs before. Do you chop up hard-boiled eggs right into the sauce, or serve the sauce over whole eggs? If whole, are they hard-boiled, fried, or other? Sounds like a great way to use eggs, especially if you have a lot coming in (i.e., if you have laying chickens...which I do not, now, but did as a kid).
@@patriciamorgan6545 you can chop up hard boiled eggs or put it on top of whatever kind of eggs you want. We had it over scrambled eggs. You can add cooked ground sausage and have sausage gravy 😊
@@pam5389 Oh boy, now you're talking! That sounds great! Thanks!!😋
@@patriciamorgan6545 you are very welcome 😊
I can do without the peas. Maybe green beans. Thanks for showing. 😀
You can add whatever vegetable you like. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
That brings back childhood memories!!! Friday nights always had fish of some kind, and this was my favorite!💖
Growing up I also had some kind of fish every Friday. Creamed Tuna is still one of my favorite meals. Thank you so much for watching and have a good day👩🏻
Exactly how I make it. The same way my grandmother and parents made it. I just cooked it this evening for my 92-year-old dad.

Aww I love this! Reminds me of my grandma, who moved out to Iowa from New York. She’d make this for me (peas required, of course!) all the time. She’s been gone 19 years now and I’ll still make it time to time. I think I’m one of a few under 30 who does 😂
Thank you for sharing that your Grandma would make you the creamed tuna on toast. This is one of my favorite meals and I am sure your Grandma is looking down and happy that you are making this meal. My Grandma is gone along time but I think of her whenever I make a meal she would prepare for me. Thank you so much for watching and have a great day❤️Grandma👩🏻

I will be making the baked beans on toast since Grandpa loves baked beans. Thank you for sharing👩🏻
UPDATE ! Hello Grandma… I just made this. I added a splash of white wine in the sauce as it thickened. It’s amazingly delicious. I like the peas because it helps add vegetables to the meal. But one can always add chopped parsley as well …. I will always have this recipe in my head and will think of you for teaching me and I am sure I’ll make itmany times in the future…..🙏🏻
I am so happy to hear you made the Creamed Tuna On Toast and you will think of me whenever you make this meal. A great addition to the sauce white wine. I just love that grandpa hates peas because I do too ♥️♥️♥️
Grandma Feral I just love you and your recipes You remind me of my Grandma.

Love cream tuna over toast. I make mine in a cast iron skillet, I dump can of tuna in it and heat up juice and all, (I buy water base), then add two heaping spoons of white flour and cook until light brown and all liquid is absorbed then slowly pour milk in stirring until thicken. Add salt and pepper and our over toast.
Thank you for sharing how you make your creamed tuna. My Mom always make it in a saucepan but a skillet is great to use also. I use only tuna in water also. Thank you for watching 👩🏻
