    Oh, I do love that scene (6:44 / 7:06). Seeing either Jerry or Tom imitating the MGM lion's roar was one o' the best things in the world to me when I was a kid.

      I also loved the Tom & Jerry cartoons, and knew they were in color. But when The Wizard of Oz came on, a film I knew was mostly in color, and I saw the lion was in black & white, I wondered what was going on.

    I love that their logo shows off what the do. They had a living moving logo as they are a motion picture company and then when they started doing sound movies they added a roar. You can tell how excited they must have been to add the roar.

      @@addis8077 After musicals stopped being popular, they moved onto epics which only further bankrupted the studio. Eventually it was bought out by Kirk Kerkorian, who downsized the whole operation, purchased United Artist and became mostly a distribution company from that point on.

    I remember seeing the MGM logos for classic Tom and Jerry cartoons when I was a kid.
    The vast majority of pre-May 1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer titles are currently the property of Turner Entertainment Co. and are thus currently distributed by their WarnerMedia (formerly known as Time Warner after it merged with AT&T when it was sold to AT&T) sister company Warner Bros.
    I'm hoping Warner Bros. should buy MGM so they could reunite with MGM if they already bought MGM.

      I'll always remember that one because it was the opening to 2001. I'm guessing that was a directorial choice to not use the lion clip or it was just denoting that this was the Anglican division of the company

      It was only used for 3 films across 1966-68, so it wasn’t being used as THE logo. Not sure what the thinking was. That logo ended up being used for MGM Resorts International.

    This has to be the most bipolar lion I've ever seen. Sometimes he roars, sometimes he's chill, sometimes he sounds like a cat, sometimes he sounds and looks human, and just when you think you finally have a powerful lion, he goes back to sounding like water going down a drain. This really busted my perception of the powerful MGM lion. 2008 is the best one.

    The one from the 40s until the modern one I think in 1957 is the only other one I've actually seen while watching a movie, and it's easily the 2nd best one after the current one. A lot of the other ones it seems so awkward, the ones from the 20s and earlier the lion looks like it doesn't understand what's happening lol.

    I'm glad they kept the live action Lion for the Hanna-barbara Tom and Jerry shorts. There's just something about a live action Lion welcoming you to watch a cartoon of a cat getting its ass handed to by an mouse with its iconic theme music.

      Tanner is the original lion appearing in the original Tom and Jerry cartoon in the beginning (especially in the one where Tom immediately replaced the lion; I'm mentioning this because I used to think it was Leo because of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer being written above the movie tape roll logo when it was actually Tanner since Leo appeared in the one with MGM's name above). 🦁
