- The Thong Song was never meant for Sisqo, but once he heard the track he couldn’t let it go. Although it was originally meant for Michael Jackson, producers Tim & Bob were won over by Sisqo's enthusiasm and fresh ideas. VICE met the creators of Thong Song to hear how G-strings and violin strings united to create this iconic song that brought thongs to the masses.

Sisqó's decision to hire a violinist and rewrite the melody of the sample was genius. It really made the song.
I thought the EXACT same thing!!
Hire a violinist WHOSE WIFE MADE HER OWN THONGS BACK IN THE 70’s!!!!
@@CalexanderJ Legendary 😂
I don't wanna talk down on Sisqo's creativity but I do need to point out that during mid to late 90's it was hip to add violins to hip hop, the song I remember the most is Money Power Respect, but there were many others
Calling stolen music "samples" was brilliant
The violinist is the real mvp of this song.
I highly agree, the that then the lyrics.
I glad you enjoyed the violin part! You might like this: czcams.com/video/PDK6sPiOKuY/video.html
I agree. He deserves his cut too like the girl that gave Sisqo the inspiration for the song
X-Factor
@@thequintessential5503 why would the girl deserve anything?
The violinist understood and executed his assignment perfectly👌🏼👌🏼
I feel like he made the song what it is
One of the most legendary intros ever.
Yessss!!!!!
PERFECT! 😂
Yes he did. The violin was it!
You gotta admit that Sisqo is a genius. He didnt created the beat nor the violin part, but he knew how to assemble them and the lyrics together, forming it to a masterpiece.
He put them together so well that the people who made the different parts even said things like "it dont even sound like mine anymore" and "no i didnt hear it, but it might be the song i put a violin on". Thats genius
At the young age of 20 too
Besides actual instrument talent, arrangement is another talent. Your mind is working on a different level putting together the different sounds of the instruments and harmonies to see through a vision. In Sisqo's case its from a hot date experience to a certified club banger.
he's BAD A**
He knew he needed that violin. The genius started there.
Honestly, no one hears Ricky Martin's Living La Vida Loca when they hear the Thong song. That track is all Sisqo.
I don’t hear it at all until Sisqo says it that’s the problem.
I heard Ricky Martin when I first heard the song. I never knew that it led to a lawsuit.
I guess 'Livin la vida loca' was also a big hit at the time that's why it was a problem. Two chart toppers using the same phrase.
Its today after watching this that I even realized it.
@@revinot You don't guess. You have to know. You wasn't born yet huh. Thong song came after. Not long after tho. And yes living la vida loca was a big big hit. But NOT at the same time.
That violin always hits the right spot.

Check out vitamin string quartet. Sampled strings make all the magic.
It's one of my favorite parts of the song!!
Neva lied
Vice and the story of the violinist might bring this song back to the top
This song would NOT be what it is without the violinist. Lowkey GOAT status.
He's the Real ⭐
His look was so ICONIC at the time! He looked edgy and futuristic at the same time, and you could tell his image wasn't forced.
Edgy and futuristic, perfect description
Yes absolutely!! I was a child at the time I first heard this song so I didn’t *fully* understand it (lol) but I was transfixed by his look. I remember thinking he’d fit right in in the futuristic Y2K movies I’d seen at that point.
he was super young at the time too, it’s what happens when you let the youth express themselves 💪🏽🔥
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the lady who stripped for this man to create this masterpiece.

Who is she?!? Get her in this video. She tha real MVP.
She definitely needs to get her own cut of the money 😅

I don't think I've ever seen an artist who is so jolly and light hearted as that Sisqo. He genuinely seems like a fun person.
Yes lighthearted is the word. He’s so sweet.
The violinist is a fuckin stud! If any of you have kids that play an instrument, don't let them stop! So many kids stop because they think it's uncool when they get older. This guy is amazing.

What's amazing to me is how talented the violinist is, without even knowing what the artist wanted! It WAS truly awesome.
The look of utter innocence in his eyes when he says he's never seen a thong before somehow makes it better. And the fact the violinist also married his wife because of a thong... It's just an ode to the thong all around. No but seriously, he comes off so sincere, he had all this style, the sun tattoo on his bellybutton is very beautiful, and then this song, the chorus has some magnetism to it, and I never appreciated just how refined the chords are here, the song actually climaxes on the bridge, it's art. Pure art.

What garbage new artists are too serious?? This the type of stuff that makes you really appreciate and miss the 90s 🏆
That "YEAAAAAHHH"when the beat drop mid song still gives me chills 👏🏿👏🏿
Right hahaha!!!
To my it was a freedom yell LMAO. I sang it out loud back then.
Yeahhhhhhhh
Not a fan, but anyone who can say, "I'm short, kinda like a keebler elf..." and laugh about it... that is strength of character.
*any man who can
It's so unfair how much pressure men have on being tall. I like short guys. Height doesn't matter.
@@Xii371 you've made me so happy... Let's get married!
I'm short, like a Smurf! I love Smurfs 😁
@@Xii371
It’s nice to hear this from a lady, a lot of pressure growing up being short. And when I say short am speaking being over 5 ft 3 etc. It’s like you can’t win, you can be winning in life, work be fit health wise etc but some women would shun you just based on that.
He has a great personality, seems like an awesome friend to have.
“I think Ima say that dude” lmfaoooo such an iconic song with a simple everyday story that we can all relate to. That’s why I love music
Straight men only can relate
Yooo the violinist at the very end of the video is a freaking G! His wife was making her own thongs in the 70's!
The amount of production and meticulous care that went into this song...is hilariously epic
“Let’s be clear. When I said ‘dumps like a truck’, I did not mean anything about poop.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That made this whole thing worth it. Believe me, we wondered about that for years... 😆
I read this comment right as he said it 😂
I died
14:20 😭
The part with the violinist creating that climatic ensemble as Sisqo specified was genius. He knows himself and always try to find moments to hit those peak vocals, reminds me of when he did the song with DMX “What these B$&$@?! want from a N!&&@“. Legendary tunes
Still my jam over 20 years later
We need the history of "Back that ass up" by juvenile next!
Genius covered that already. It’s a part of their “Deconstructed” series.
Netflix got that covered already. NoLa
It still needs to be done boys.
Song wasn't that big. Vice should do one on buju banton boom bye bye
@@rick6672 your dumb Back that Ass Up Is still to this day one of the biggest hip hop Songs when that Song come on in a party people that was only 5 years old when it came out run to the dance floor
Can’t believe that we live in a world where someone can sue you for singing the words “living la vida loca”.
And they can own more than anyone else
@@smarti1144 I know right. That’s insane and absolutely unfair to sisqo, the two producers, and the violinists.
Right! I seen a video where birdman said he wish he copyrighted the words BLING BLING
This was my initial thought as well, but then I heard it again and it's not as simple as saying the same words. It's sung with the same note pattern, the same syncopation, everything. It was a direct ripoff. Whether you or I think it's right or wrong, that's how the rules were written.
ummm.... America!!!
5:18 staff like this is the reason why I love beat making. Its looks so easy yet the sound that came from there was revolutionary.🔥
Sisqo's promotional singles were hits in Accra, Ghana. Thong Song and "Got to Get it" were the next hits after Dragon. Dragon was huge.
The violinist tore that up in the thong song that was GENIUS how he put that together!! Couldn’t have been better 🥰
I'm glad you enjoyed the violin part! You might like this:
