The Story of 'Because I Got High' by Afroman

- After years of trying to get his rap career off the ground, Joseph Foreman (aka Afroman) struck gold with a cautionary tale about the consequences of excessive weed smoking. “Because I Got High” began gaining traction throughout the South but once it made its way onto Napster and the Howard Stern show, it became an unlikely mainstream hit. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes starred in the iconic music video and featured the track in their film “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, and the song eventually became a #1 hit in 11 countries. VICE meets Afroman to retell the story of his perennial stoner anthem and speak to Kevin Smith about his experience being a part of taking the song sky high.

If you played "because I got high" or "colt 45" at any house party in the early 2000s the entire crowd would go wild, that's how you know you are involved in something special. It doesn't matter if afroman has only 2 songs that people really know of, it's about what he represents just as much as the music, the time, the era, the weed, the nostalgia. Well said
Truth.
Nailed it. You must be Joseph
You really should try it once and listen to it. Alcohol is way worse than weed on every system in your body including your brain. If youll drink a beer you can definitely smoke a joint
My son turned me on to this song when he was twelve, and I laughed my butt off!
Now my son is 31 and we often smoke a few bowls after dinner while watching Star Trek reruns. Back then, neither of us smoked the "Devil's Lettuce", but when I found that it reduces the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, the very painful neurological disease I have, then I started medicating with it.
Back in 2004 when my pain was off the charts, my doctor prescribed Fentanyl patch to control the pain, but that crap made me very sick. I've been prescribed anti-seizure meds that affected my memory and ability to function so adversely that I forgot how to drive a car or operate common tools. One drug caused severe allergic reaction where I had blisters all over me.
Cannabis affects memory, but nothing like the pharmaceuticals do.
My disease is a brain disorder that is related to epileptic seizures. Cannabis has proven to be an effective treatment for epilepsy. It seems to prevent most seizures from occurring or lessens the severity.
It gave me my life back!
A friend in Texas has a young daughter who is epileptic. Her seizures were so severe and frequent the poor little girl had to stop attending school. My friend read about a girl in Colorado whose epilepsy was very similar to her daughters. This girl was treated by a special strain of cannabis called Charlotte's Web, which is high-cannabidiol, low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and doesn't make one "high" like traditional weed since it's low in THC. It's a CBD product made from hemp.
Of course, living in Texas she couldn't buy this medicine for her daughter even though it's CBD. Her daughter had a severe seizure that put her in the hospital and nearly ended her, and that was the last straw. My friend decided to move to Colorado to save her baby girl! It's working very well, and she's now attending public school, making good grades and lots of friends.

I was a 10 year old boy when I heard because I got high for the first time. I was on holiday with some family friends on the wild coast of South Africa (where smoking marijuana is a very popular past time). I just remember one evening after a braai (barbecue) and lots of drinking all the adults really enjoying and laughing at this song. Us kids laughed as well, not knowing what its all about but just seeing the joy around this song I always remember that positive memory. Because I got high travelled with me through my later university years when I started experimenting with marijuana, particularly in my post grad years. It has and will always be a positive and uplifting piece of music to me. Thanks Afroman.
I got to interview Afroman when I was in college years ago and he was great to chat with. I had called him for the interview and missed him....he called back and left a voicemail singing "I was gonna call you sooner, but then I got high!" Really cool dude.
This was one example of how the early mp3 file sharing made someone's career. Everyone had this song downloaded from Limewire or Kazaa and heard it when they wouldn't have otherwise.
Was it cool when he smashed that women in the face?
Hold on. Did you ever get the interview? Was the voicemail the end of the story? Did you sell the voicemail on eBay?
I remember seeing him perform in Destin FL (I forget the name of the club, right by the beach) on 4/20/08. The outside area was a cloud of smoke, this was well before weed was any resemblance of legal in FL. The Cops were swarming that place in full force at the end of the night. Needless to say I saw him perform a few songs and dipped, I couldn't partake considering I was active duty attending EOD School at Eglin AFB down the road. Hard to believe that's been over 14 years ago.
Never seen this dude but he was a legend among pot smokers in Italy when I started smoking weed
@@FentanylPopsicle how do you feel when you watch the video of him extending his arm back fully and launching that ferocious punch to the womans face, flying to the ground. Is it all just fine to you?
This song was played at my cousins funeral sitting in the Chapel it was a fitting tribute even the priest didn't mind
I used to listen to this when I was still straight edge. It's just a song that helps you deal with stuff, it's upbeat against adversity. It's inherently adverse, it's doing something that is illegal(was illegal back then still is lots of places)to deal with life's problems. Future generations wont remember what it was like, the shame and risk it used to be to go to a party, or meet new people, and navigate around smoking. Hide behind the shed, hope you don't ask the wrong person who calls the cops, hope you don't get judged. That culture will be lost on future generations. Just getting green back in the day was dangerous. And I was a misanthrope(without it), so I had to be social and ask people for help getting something illegal. It was rough, songs like this just made it fun. made you feel more comfortable. Playing a song like this used to be a small protest, with a great beat. Still love this song. Had no idea he was such a good singer either.

What a down-to-earth guy. This gives me more appreciation for him as a person. I wish the best for him in life and whatever makes him happy
Nice comment, now go and watch him land a haymaker on a defenceless 110 lb female, full force behind it, could've killed her
@@jamesjameson4566 yeah wasn't cool of him to punch someone, but the act was more reactive than malicious. I found an article online from NME by Luke Morgan Britton, describing "Afroman, real name Joseph Edgar Foreman, was playing guitar onstage when a woman approached him from behind and danced against him, at which point he turned around and punched her with his right hand.". Not saying that he should've punched her, but I think it's reasonable to speculate maybe Afroman didn't know who just came up behind and started grabbing him, and reacted swiftly.
I'm not trying to ride Afroman's dick, but don't make it seem like it's something it's not. Also, its a pretty well known fact as a fan you don't just jump on stage cause you feel like it. People who, uninvitationally, go on stage during a show usually get roughed up because how are people suppose to know if this random person is a mega-fan or someone trying to hurt them for clout or publicity (xxxtentacion, Pantera, Ski Mask, and I assume others have had the latter happen to them)
@@devinhiett7341 why are you reading articles on it, there's a video, and it was what it was, a dark hearted, evil person acting out some extreme violence against a very small woman, evil and cowardly. He had plenty of time to react, he had plenty of time to pull his arm all the way back to really give it the full force, he put his whole body in to it, he also found her face quite easily, meaning he knew exactly who he was punching, so that... I didn't see it stuff... Doesn't fly (she did though) Also he immediately gets back to playing his guitar, like it never happened, there was no threat, perceived or otherwise and there was certainly no remorse
Jfc Afroman is a timeless genius… and literally his laughter n energy can cure your depression at anytime… Literally bless this man for giving us this amazing song… Afroman forever
And to you… I raise my glass n say may you live forever ❤
Idk how ppl say he is a one hit wonder! This man had this song as one that blew up plus colt 45 was huge that’s 2! Guy has a few great songs not just one! I appreciate Afroman!
Check out "I live in a van" his best jaunt
How could anyone not like this guy? He is one of those people that will keep you smiling and laughing anytime he is around
Still weighing the morality of when he punched that women who hopped on his stage.
@@cstepaniuk8611 what prize do you think she should be rewarded for breaking the rules of getting on stage? In my world, stupid games gets you stupid prizes! She won that night but apparently didn't like her prize!
@@beardahn2331 I think the punishment was too severe for the crime.
He could have seriously injured that woman while she was posing no obvious threat.
Arrogant to invite herself on stage; she was merely dancing.
What if that was your sister/mom/wife/daughter?
I would prefer someone politely and firmly remove her from the stage.
@@beardahn2331 I understand that audience members have assaulted/murdered performers in the past.
Do you truly believe that was her intent?

I legit sang this in a karaoke bar in Japan with my ex-wife's relatives right there in the room. Until that moment I had only heard the radio version. All I can say is that I'm glad English is not their first language because... Oh, boy! Some of those lyrics are 😲
😂😂😂😂😂😂
My dad had also only ever heard the radio version. We were at a kareoke bar in Portugal and he decided he'd get up and sing BIGH. I'll never forget his face after the "I was gonna make love to you" line.
@@vansittart4551 honestly I usually harmonize over it with a friend, since it's 2 girls singing it every body lets it go and sings "because I got high" while we riff. Fun times.
I am proudly part of a small generation that opted to sing Crazy Rap (Colt 45) at the top of our lungs at every home football game. Thank you Afroman.
around 2012, Afroman came to play at a friends bar. Pulled up in a green minivan and wore a green tracksuit. Had a great small show then hung out with us. He's an awesome person and isn't in his ego. He signed a Colt-45 for me, since I've then lost sadly, shared a few splifs, tried to Bic my Bic, laughed when I called him out for it.
Mad respect to the Afroman for standing true to the essence of who he truly is rather than letting big record company manipulate it.
Afroman is happy when he’s making other people happy with his music, and that what he continues to do!
He is happy and that's all that matters.
I love his laughter. I love how positive his perspective is, it's priceless. That self satisfaction and inner peace and joy.
It's so beautiful.
It's the herb..
I met Afroman in Dayton TN. It’s a small ass town, to see him there we where like “what!?” He has a friend that owned a bar and some other businesses there. Afroman is a chill dude. Good meeting you!
Love this man’s enthusiasm. I’m 42 now and will always appreciate this song. Shout out from Oklahoma bro!!!
Its crazy because this was my Grandma's FAVORITE song LOL. She passed away a few years ago but I remember we got her the album for Christmas one year and she played it non-stop for months hahaha. This song always makes the memories come right back, I wish we could smoke just 1 more together..
Your grandma sounded like she was fun.
@@Lifeinlivingcolors she was, very much so ❤️
Thanks for sharing one of many great memories with her :)
Wholesome, made me smile.
Wholesome, made me smile.
In July 2021 I saw Afroman eating at a Cracker Barrel in Las Vegas. His crew & the waitresses sang happy birthday to him, then he took pics with all of them. Genuine smiles the whole time. Seemed like a really chill, laid back dude, and this just confirms it.
I met him after a show in Sacramento, he's a really cool guy
Coming across something like this and watching it from start to finish with the biggest smile. Clearly afroman is really an entire vibe until this day and you can hear how humble he is. Definitely a song I listen to until this day and like he said, how many hits do you need? 😂 when that one hit is literally what he needed to live out his entire life in happiness. I swear this video is a whole vibe on it's own ❤😂🎉
I was in college when his song blew up, it was over 20 years ago, I can still remember some of the lyrics...
"How many hits do you need?" Just one and your whole life will change.
Groups are explored because of only one hit song and are gossiped about as to why their other songs that were better that didn't make it. Afro, if you see this ever, just know two of your songs are constantly played in my area. You were never forgotten about, radio is a shame and always will be a puppet to guide the masses.
Right!!!! ♥️♥️ People should leave one hit wonders alone. Ps some songs on his album were really good
My cousin used to play this music every morning when we wake up and we didn’t understand what “getting high” mean since we were just kid but we liked it so much we sang it every time we hear it. Sadly my cousin passed away three years ago. And every time I hear this song reminds me of him, he will be missed and memories of this song ❤️
Type afroman punches women in face, see how many love hearts you have for this this evil man
Yeah it’s crazy how emotionally connected people and certain songs and become, I have a couple similar examples of this with a friend who overdosed and one who was killed by a drunk driver.
Sometimes I just start singing this in my head and me and my fiance who has since passed away but we would just keep it going and adding more lyrics until we couldn't think of anything else to sing but so this makes me think about him when I hear it or it just comes to mind so I have fond memories with this song and still love 💕 this rap song.
You can’t help but smile when you hear this song. Definitely need it in 2023 after what we went through in 2020.
This song was very influential to me as a teen growing up.
Seeing the real Afroman behind the scenes and sharing his story had made me appreciate him even more.
Yeah, my friend in grade school showed me Afroman and that was it
I’ve been high ever since
I sang this song at my 54th birthday party. 😜
My sister met Afroman at a club/bar, he's such a down to earth person. He did a video for my dads birthday just because she said it was his birthday. He's brought so much light to cannabis and I think he had a big impact on destigmatizing weed culture in the early 2000's. So great to see how far weed laws have changed over the years In the states. Afroman will always be be played in the playlist for the kickbacks, colt 45 personally is what got me on to Afroman and is for sure my favorite song. Every listen is a smile and a good time no matter what mood I'm. Thank you Afroman. And thank you vice for a one of a kind documentary.
Afroman beats women, CZcams it

My stepmom introduced me to this song when she picked me up from Airport in 8th grade to freshman year summertime. Such a great album.
Man seems at peace, that's all that matters. Inspirational. You don't need what the world/system tells you about happiness and life. Life is life, it will never change. A man with the least amount of stress is the richest man. Patron saint of my 420 era.
Guess u missed when he smacked the hell out of a female fan. On stage. For NO REASON. Real great guy
thats what life is all about man, much love brother

living in Nigeria i remember my big brother telling me about the song when he visited from italy. not long after that internet got very accessible and i was able to download the song and then phones with mp3 players showed up and made the song go round in this part of the world.
"good things happen when you're alone"
Definitely a statement that goes against the social grain, but a statement that I, someone who makes art can relate to. Loneliness is pain, but loneliness can be the catalyst that some of us use to make art. Thank you Afroman
loneliness is pleasure, youre confused by society
You're wrong, he's talking about being alone, not loneky. I love being alone, it's invigorating and the world has endless possibilities. You're making it sound all sad.
Very well said!
As a Fellow Artist myself, I can fully agree with with your last statement. Loneliness is pain and pain can either make or break you but one thing that's garenteed is the crazy artistic outcome that comes with it
Loneliness isn’t pain it’s a beautiful thing
My best friend passed away about 8 years ago now...
When we were kids we would sing this song almost religiously...
It sounds stupid but I still cry when I sing " A E I O U.... AND SOMETIMES W!!!!"

@Johndoe I'm sorry you had feel that bombshell dropped on you so suddenly...
But there is never really an easy way to get the news...
A looooong story behind my friends death but the short answer is/was: PTSD from actions committed in military cause him to shoot himself.
I had a missed call from him.
He had called at 3:17am and I was sleeping.... next morning I got the news from his crying mother...
My first brush with a loved one dying...
Needless to say, I'd call his phone everyday for that month just to hear his voice mail.
More of a brother to me than my own blood.
I miss that fucker every day...
The dreams with him were the worse too, because you wake up and realize none of its real...

Too funny.... This popped up on my stream. So glad I watched it....smiling. We need more joyfully realistic songs that does not sound like the rest. It only takes "One" hit to be a Wonder. Continued success Afroman!
