- Harry potter is a series I grew up loving, but as I grew up and as I saw the creator turn into just the worst kind of person, I had this sense of urge to take back the world and make it my own. This is that. Draco Malfoy is a character I'm not too fond of so I rewrote him to better fit the ending he got in the series, but also you know make it gay, because why now.

adding draco as an extra main character to the trio gave me a cool idea, having 3 gryffindors and 1 slythrin is weird. i find this to be the perfect opportunity to make these 4 characters each a representation of each house. hermione a ravenclaw obviously. harry will get whatever remaining house there is, its all depending on ron. ron could be a Gryffindor to match the rest of his family, or more interestingly be a Hufflepuff to set him up as a black sheep which makes him special and more main character material?
also goddamn this is amazing, never shipped drarry before but GOOD LORD i do now. also i would pay to watch this become a real movie series (but only if we get more book hermione with her learning rules just so she can dance around them completely unharmed pls pls pls book hermione is a girlboss)

Also have you heard the theory about how supposedly JK originally intended Draco to be bitten by Fenrir Greyback as "punishment" for Lucius' failure at getting the prophecy at the Ministry in Book 5. I believe it was one of the reasons that Greyback is mentioned to have targeted kids in the past (not just Remus when he was a kid) and why Draco is described as looking stressed and sickly in Book 6 repeatedly (besides the obvious stress of being 16 and trying to kill Dumbledore) But I guess the general idea possibly was that it was a "punishment" on Lucius and the family because their only pureblood son was now a "half-breed" and no longer suitable for continuing the Malfoy line. There's also a comment made in the 7th film (can't remember if it was in the book or not) where Voldemort, after having heard that Remus and Tonks had a baby, jokingly asks Draco if he'll babysit the pups? cubs? It's not super important to the theory but just another thing people say hints at this possibility.
Personally I think it would have been really cool if she had written that into the story and could have really made Draco a more interesting and redeemable character than he is in current canon.

This is more well thought out than anything rowling's ever written. Also, not sure where I heard it, but I heard at one point that rowling didn't really want draco to be redeemed and was annoyed that fans were doing it, so that might be why the "making him sympathetic" stuff was botched; she'd never really intended a redemption arc.
Which is all the more galling when you consider how she decided that snape was the best guy ever and had never done anything wrong despite all of the child abuse and being fine with genocide until the woman he was in love with was threatened. But hey, the teenager who was raised into a culture of bigotry and never socialized outside of that and forced into an awful situation is the irredeemable one, not this adult man who could've been less of a shit at literally any time!
(also, unrelated, is there a credit for the fanarts? I like a lot of those works and it would be cool to be able to find their profiles online)
Thank you this is one of my favorite things ive made i tried to get it right. And you have a point on all that which baffles me when i step back because really draco had no shot st being normal but snap is my age and is really just not a well rounded person. Its scary how much he really does echo people in their late 20s early 30s who never got over highschool because god damn does he need to be taken to wizard therapy.

I really loved this depiction so much😭I was never a heavy drarry shipper but with this depiction I see the appeal lmao, I think I'd personally prefer the Sirius Black timeline because it would somewhat make up for the relationship with his parents that Harry never got, but I can also see the reasoning behind Harry having grown up with Dumbledore--Honestly it would've made his death all the more tragic and devastating. I feel like post-calamity, that long emotional talk would've made me cry lmao. I'm a sucker for developmental moments, and the the little sprinkle of banter and nicknames is a must-have in any sense pfft. You're a really talented writer dude, and I respect the dedication you have for these mediums🤝 (I've been on a binge of sorts-)

INCREDIBLE CHANGES. Thank you for the necessary depth you've added. Characters in your version are actually fleshed out it's maddening. Harry potter as a book series is a lot of potential that is unfortunately not very well fulfilled by a novice at a time writer)

I am on my knees begging you to please read the Simon Snow books by Rainbow Rowell. It's basically this but the Harry standin is a softy that can't use magic correctly, and Draco is an ultra-gay vampire, and this version of Dumbledore is called out for his weird obsession with prophetic child soldiers. I promise it's worth it.

Also you might be missing out on season 2 it's a miracle I'm not insisting to you to watch it but I say give it a chance if you didn't like it. Mabye make a video about it although only first season is similar to Harry Potter.

This rewrite kind of defeats aspects of Draco that makes me invested in his potential, and it’s the fact he’s awful, shitty, a coward, prideful to his own detriment, and needlessly shitty to Harry out of jealousy. This rewrite makes him an awkward, but well meaning and kind guy that’s sweet to Harry. Them being a happy healthy couple is nice, but it’s the fact that they would terrible for each other but have a pull anyways that makes “Gay Draco” extremely appealing. Especially considering the heavy emphasis he puts on bloodline and carrying on the family legacy. To picture Draco being fine with dating Harry earnestly (and not out of let’s say, an attempt to boost the family name or his own reputation) removes the Draco from Draco. Simply put, they cannot be a healthy couple without removing the core flaws of Draco that make him interesting, which you have done here. He needs to grow over the story to become someone Harry can admire, not start off as someone already generally agreeable. Draco, support house elves before his exploration of morality right before and during the wizarding war? Seriously? If he already believe in the rights of others, why would he ever become a death eater or allow death eaters to enter Hogwarts?
This comes across more as a “Wouldn’t it be so cute if drarry was just healthy, sweet, queer representation?” rather than actual analysis of the characters or their dynamics, and how being queer would affect that. I think my dislike of your rewrite comes from fundamentally different reads of his character. For example, you don’t understand how Hermione and Weasley hand wave Draco’s potential to be a Death Eater despite his parents being Death Eaters, and view this as a contrivance. This is actually one of my favorite bits, because Draco is a bumbling coward who espouses violent ideology but is very obviously uncomfortable by violence (hence his consistent inaction to do kind or cruel actions.) Given his consistent inaction to do anything actually harmful outside of ignoring others wrongdoings, it’s completely logical to think, “Well, why would Draco start biting instead of barking, when he’s never shown an inking of doing so?”
Harry being correct about Draco being Death Eater, surprising his friends, proves how much potential their dynamic has. Harry knows Draco deeply and knows Draco is capable, possibly from observing him a lot (gayass) to the point he can predict Draco’s actions, even when others can’t.
The fact you made Harry hit Goyle with Sectumsempra instead of Draco shows how much you’ve fundamentally changed what made their dynamic fascinating in the first place.

Well thats kinda the point of the rewrite if you start them off different but keep everything else the same then why change anything to begin with? I understand draco is scared and pitiful and a blood suremisit i called him "my draco" because i wanted him to be a good person thst has a fall but picks himself back up not a shit person who pulls a 180.
Them being friends influnces dracos world veiw and his theres, thats why hes not no nasty in my version. The thing about him understanding elf rights comes from spending almost 3 years with hermione and learning from her muggle history he learned in this version why mudblood is a bad thing and i naturally assumed that would lead to him amd her having more conversations about this topic. And even if she just explains why its wrong to him amd him get it, characters can have contradictory beliefs. Yeah all house elves should be treated well, but sub human non pure wizards, he might not get the disconnect there given hes 15.
Someone like draco who has the dressing down i explained in book one who wants to cort power would try to get in your good graces, but when all your friends are good and you soend time with them you tend to take on more of their positive trauts then influnce them with your negative ones. The main trio are no strangers to argumemts over being dicks so id image theyd argure with draco and hed start to question himself more.
I dont want a nasty enemies to lovers thing i dont want the same guy who treats harry and his friends like hell i made up a new dynamic and logiced my way into making it work because i wanted this to make sense. I habe no real vested intrest in this idea beyond "ay wouldnt this be neat, and also lets piss off jk rowling by making her protagonist date a better version of her least favorite character".
Draco is a fundamentally bad person as the series shows him, and all i dod was change the encouragement he spends his time in and made it so hes shown to be more introspective the rest was natrual consequences of that thinking. I understand him, but i dont like him because he could be so much more, and i wanted to share that with people.
Even just making him the protagonists friend would ok, not as good but still ok. Also the death eater thing is contrived because theres no real evidence besides him not really doing much in book 4 besides be made fun of, book 5 has him be a prefect and be a nucence the whole book alomg with doing umgreges thing. On top of that yeah his family are death eaters and when your parents work for wizard hitler its safe to say hell use you a spy its basic war tactics and for hermonie to not even consider it betrays her character. The broken heartedness at least adresses it in a way i can belive.

I know this was made 5 months ago, but glad I found this video. Draco and Harry falling into each other and ended up being a couple is also my headcanon since I read the books many years ago. Whilst my would-be rewrite wouldn't be as drastic as yours, and that there are a lot I do not agree with, I did like some of the scenarios you came up with in this videos, especially that part where Draco broke up with Harry in order to protect Harry, and how he used their secret petnames to let Harry know he still cares, and how Narcissa asked Harry if he still love Draco. Those things are brilliant.

I dont think i can for a number of reasons, 1 harry and hermoine are as close as they are because the writer was going to make them a couple then the fans had her made her and ron a thing. 90% of my rewrite would be just saying what happens till book 6 then the massive changes wiuld happen which would boil down to "shes made he and ginny are dating instead of him and her". And 2 pansy is a fandom character i know nothing about wearing the skin of a minor character, she slots into dracos old role here because of how minor she is, how little she is established but as a romamtic love intrest to the main character i have no where to go but the toxicity that is "bully to lover" trope and ive lived that its not fun.
Draco works because hes inbetween these two points of characterization, hes major enough to have a personality i can extract from but minor enough that adding or changing him is easier to develope because its a solid spring board.
While i think ron needs a rewrite to his character and love story with hermoine her and harry seem to be as good as i can make it already. The most intresting thing i can think of to do with them is little conversations about the culture shock of being in mggle families all their lives, and how that is effected by their staus and/or gender, but thats more conversations they can hbe rather than a full on rewrite
