DIY Airbrush Spray Booth Build

- EP 4: Before I got too deep into building this 1968 VW Beetle Bug model kit, I knew I had to make some preparations, like having a spray booth for priming and airbrushing the numerous parts.
Not wanting to do this Outdoors, I knocked together a free DIY airbrush spray paint booth just from stuff I have hanging around.
It works great, and I can set it on a table in front of a window for a fume-free painting experience.
A cheap box fan would work, but this is one is closest to the one I have.

Did the same thing years ago. I had an air conditioner in the window with a plywood panel over it. Took a PC fan, a dryer vent cover and a cardboard box. Ripped the cord off of a piece of junk fan in the garbage bin. Only thing I had to by was a filter. Worked perfectly for years. Just finished building another one, this one fits into the balcony door and is removable.
I redid my workshop a few weeks ago and now the one I have doesn't work as well with the window so I'm redesigning mine also.
@@bryanshobbies My latest one is a double walled box with 4 computer fans in it. I just framed around them with 3/4x 1 1/2 strip cut to fit a standard AC unit. I just tape it in place with masking tape. Mind you putting it into the door window every; time I want to spray is a PITA so in warm weather I just pick up the gear and do it on my bench on the balcony. I built the thing for use in the winter primarily.

im about to rebuild mine (5 years, used a tote) but 1 thing im going to stick with is using a drier OUTLET for the exhaust inlet and then using an inline fan after 8 feet of drier hose. just a simple layer of fabric over the exhaust hole and by the time the paint has gone through 8 feet of hose theres nothing left to hit the fan. it also gives me options if i want to pipe it out a window or in to the drier exhaust line.
Currently building one myself, but instead of a cardboard box, I use a plastic box container. I did think about cardboard but I'm using a rather beefy ceiling exhaust fan so I need a sturdier material. Very excited to start learning airbrushing for model kits!

@@bryanshobbies Sad to see a neighbor across the street rattle canning a coat rack with bronze metallic. Spraying into the wind while sitting Indian style. I keep a 3M mask handy and bust out the cartridges rated for V.O.C. I once had a sticky valve and the tiny whiff ran me out of the room.
I wonder how much cartridges cost now.
Haven't needed them in five years.
Hay there,built mine with a large cardboard box I pulled out of a dumpster at a hardware store. Painted the inside with gloss paint so it can be wiped out. Fitted a ceiling fan in the side,sealed with heavy duty tape,then taped an expansion tube to the fan, that can be pulled out so it sits outside my shed,all the fumes get sucked out. Works OK...

The fan may not lost long. For full size car,
I built a diy spray booth under a car port. Shot three stage Auto paint. I used a high velocity floor fan. Paint built up on armature windings and fan stopped turning. Real auto spray booth should use belt driven fan.
Which is to prevent an explosion by the motor and vapors. Lucky I did not blowup!
My Diy also used an air filter similar to yours.
I do know the volume of paint from an Airbrush isn't much by comparison to a large HVLP Paint gun.
Maybe use a smaller fan, like one from junk microwave. Those typically only use 20 watts. And can be stuck on the end of a vinyl clothes dryer hose.
Maybe use an LED light bar for illumination.
You can cover it's lens with transparent food plastic wrap. Just tear off the old sheet when it has accumulated coating of overspray.
Here's a hint of math. One and one half cubic foot of volume, would work well being evacuated by a fan capable of ninety cubic feet per minute.
For you metric guys, do your own conversion

The design of the booth is awesome but how well does it work do you use it in front of a window or where you have it on the video. Does the overspray gets sucked in then thrown out the back, but does it get rid of all of it or most of it. Curious mind because I'm planning something similar but with some mdf panels I have.
Yes it is absolutely venting out of window. I got lucky all around on this setup and that it fits perfectly on a desk top pointing out a window. I am even able to put some baffles around it and it will even pull a slight negative pressure in the room.

It was a 20 x 25 in furnace filter but I quickly upgraded it to a better one with a baffled surface.
@@bryanshobbies When you refer to "baffled surface" are you meaning a "pleated filter" versus fiberglass/foam ?

Great work, but I think that should i follow through, ill make the filter access easier to replace. Asl it looked like yours was permanently in place. Im guessing that your going to have to rebuild the encasing portion of the filter. Maya simple hinge along the top part, and velcro strip along the bottom. ????
It will actually pop in from the front. I can take the whole baffle, and the filters just held in with some masking tape. In fact, I've already replaced that cheap furnace filter with a good pleated one.

Yes, but you have to go slow and point fan out the window.
Nice work but the fans are more expensive than a spray booth
The fan I used is one I had laying around, and I just adapted it to the box I had.
This project could could be done with a cheap box fan also. You would just need to make the opening on the back of the box bigger and secure the fan so it doesn't leak around the edges.
Also, buying one is an option. It's just not as much fun, in my opinion. 😃

Awesome! Want to do this myself, but a question - can i use this at my work bench in the garage or do I need to vent the exhaust outside?
If you're using water-based acrylics, no, but if you're using anything with propellant or paint thinner, yes, vent it outside. Even then, I still recommend a respirator or, at the very least, an N95.

I do plan on making a new more permanent spray booth at some point and PVC would be a good choice.

Yes, for water-based stuff I just set it on the table next to my bench rattle cans or anything solvent-based it's pointed out a window with some baffles around it so it can't blow back in.
How noisy are those types of fans?
Not horrible, but I guess that's subjective. You would have no trouble carrying on a normal conversation. In fact, it just makes white noise and sort of blends into the background when I'm using it.
What size box did you use?
It was 22 x 18 x 12.

The price of the fan you installed is the same as the cost of a premade airbrush booth now.
The fan had been laying in the garage for several years unused and besides the experience and problem solving was worth more to me than anything I could have purchased. After all the point of all of this is to have fun.
So you're venting it back into the same room you're already in..
I normally have it set venting out of window, especially if I'm using a rattle can. I have on occasion just set it on the counter for a quick shot with some acrylics.
I used "plastic cardboard" like they make political yard signs out of. Unlike regular cardboard the plastic stuff is waterproof.
Interesting choice, I'm going to be building out a more permanent workspace in the not too distant future and that's a ideal worth considering. Thanks a lot!

That's basically correct, except when you get up to the big ones like for cars and stuff.
Well I built one for my 3d prints and it works great, thanks for this video. I only use water based paints but definitely not interested in inhaling the pigments.

The onething to worry about is the fan isn't explosion proof.
That's a valid point but I think it's moving enough air that I'm fairly certain that any flammable Vapors are fairly dilute by the time it gets to the fan. Also, I'm sitting right there with it if something does go poof I should be able to handle it. That's the theory anyway.
