      Another great, informative video thanks. Stunning location. Sad to hear about it being over commercialised & festival-like. Hopefully it'll change or there'll be a different one. Does anyone know the brand of those green conical tents in the 'prehistoric zone' ? Sorry I've left my comment in the wrong spot.

    Hey, Bjørn - thanks for the review of the Bushcraft Show. I wish the event had been more to your liking - time away from home is precious and should be enjoyable. You have a tight work schedule but you have presented many talks and attended several Viking & bushcraft events, maybe you could send the committee a list of pros & cons for their event which might help them plan better for next year's show. If enough people speak up, generally things will change and improve. Thanks for the video! 😉

  • @longrider42

    I guess maybe I'm too old to grasp this concept of "Bushcraft". To me its just camping while making things you need? Of course if I need a spoon, I take one with me. So I guess I'm not a "Buchcrafter". Just a guy who goes camping to enjoy being outside. And even though it looked rainy. It still looked like an interesting thing to see and go too. As soon as people could rent a tent, that's when you start attracting all the "Wrong" people. No events like that near where I live, which is too bad. I'd love to go, and find out what, if anything, I am missing.

    When I was a young girl here in Utah it was customary to give all of the young boys when they got about what 10 they're own pocket knife and I just remember feeling sort of out of place because I wasn't a boy. I couldn't have a pocket knife. Lol Still to this day I carry a pocket knife.
    I gave a pocket knife to my son. Then he came back from school saying he can't have that in his possession because it's referred to as a weapon. About six weeks later my son was expelled from school because he had one of those little Swiss knives that were like maybe 2 inches long with the fingernail file and the scissors and all the bells and whistles.I couldn't believe it !!! .I was shocked. Our rights are slowly being taken away. Oh yeah I'm upset about it. That was 15 years ago.
    I really like this video. Brought back a lots of memories. ❤

    Bjorn, as someone who organizes events, it is hard if you do it right. Things must be highly organized and organizers must vet the suppliers and emphasize the purpose of the event. Otherwise it grows out of control and turns into something else entirely. I hate that too many people have normalized drug use. Thank you for sharing your experience.

  • @JackthornLife
    @JackthornLife Před 3 měsíci +9

    The Bushcraft Show, never been, and never will. Too many pretentious people and too much commerce. You hit the nail on the head when you said Bushcraft is about learning skills, not collecting mountains of equipment (usually branded and overpriced). 99% of "Bushcrafters" these days are just campers with overpriced equipment in earthy tones. When I started sleeping outdoors and learning skills back in the 1970's it was still commonly called woodcraft and camping, then it was survival that was all the rage in the 1980's, and now its trendy to call it Bushcraft, but for that 99% its actually just camping with expensive green and brown camping gear. The real practitioners of Bushcraft and camping tent to want to get away from people, not all clump together and compare knives etc. Maybe I'm just a miserable old cynic, but the Bushcraft show and all its trappings is not for me.

  • @79joddy
    @79joddy Před 3 měsíci +5

    I attended on the Saturday. Only stayed the day. I did not stay overnight though I wish I had. The location is excellent and finding it is easy and it is well marshalled. I didn't notice drugs though it is not a surprise there is some about. It is commercialized but to an extent it needs to be to bring in traders/merchants etc. In terms of the traders there is a little something for everyone. Some of the items on sale were very expensive though some bargains could be found. It could do with more bushcraft. It is difficult to book things on the website as it not easy to navigate. I don't think the layout of the site had much rhyme or reason. You tend to find things by accident. My concern is that is might become more about prepping and survival which are in their own way bushcraft related though not something that should be front and center for the Bushcraft show. Something like the Bushcraft show is important and should have its own niche though the organizers may need to be selective about what is allowed in. Nevertheless I will try to attend next year.

I seen that more in NC, or Great Smokie MT Area. It has been years that I had been to many camping areas. Some have their areas that are Commercialized in areas, mainly as a mini tourist trap Attraction. People Like to HEAR how other areas are different. How the young are taught. For me personally, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting are things I love to do to be away from people and society. Social media has made camping or “bushcraft” a trend and it’s a trend because of the monihtazation of internet content. It’s very sad. Hopefully as with so many trends it will fade away and those who seek to profit from it will move on to the next trend.

      Same here in Oregon. Vendor fees have doubled since last year at some events. Prices to get into events have doubled at some events. Less turn out because of increased prices to get in plus increased prices from vendors. The fair committee for our county has gotten real greedy this year and they created a thick manual this year of rules.

If you ever have the opportunity to travel in a southerly direction. I recommend you spend time outdoors camping in Tasmania 42.0409 S 146.8087 E. The wilderness there is pristine. Burning Man, yeah, its nothing like it once was. There is a event now called Wasteland Weekend. A Mad Max/Fallout based event, post apocalypse, and they limit the number of people who can stay on site. So yeah, you have to be so very careful your event does not balloon out of control.

    Yes, bushcraft ahem. Let me see, man use's a steel blade, the result of 1000 yrs of metalurgical knowledge, to strike a firesteel, same level of technological development as the knife. It creates a spark, a very high temperature spark, a product of high technology, allied with some combustible material, which catches fire. If the big war starts, there wont be any firesteels, or steel for that matter. The survivors will end up eating each other, raw.

    It's less of a show and more about spending money on stupidly overpriced axes or youtuber endorsed gimmicks like a petromax stove that weighs 20kg, that no bushcrafter is gonna ever carry, there's no practicality anymore, it's just merchandise.
