  • Today we're doing a spoiler-free review of the first two episodes of an exciting new murder mystery series by Brit Marling ( the creator of The OA,) A Murder At The End Of The World.
    The first Two Episodes, Homme Fatale and The Silver Doe were a fascinating introduction to two different murder mysteries.
    It's a limited series starring Emma Corrin as Darby Hart, aka the Gen Z Sherlock Holmes.

    I'm a huge fan of The OA, and it had a similar slow, "why are these people so stupid?" Start, but Brit Marling absolutely transcends and smashes those expectations, so I'm riding this new show out to see if what we're seeing isn't all as it appears.

    I love this show. There are so many clues sprinkled throughout, if you just know where to look 🌀 It's been so much fun sleuthing through the material that was released pre-release and seeing how it all ties together.

    I just finished watching this a few days ago, and it does feel like the 21st century, with its digital and virtual spaces, requires a reworking of the classic fictional detective. Darby Hart is a great character, and the idea of a detective who can navigate these new non-physical spaces is both great, and not without precedent! Nero Wolf almost never left his brownstone, sending Archie Goodwin and his perfect memory out into the world to wrangle data for him. A virtual detective (or detective team) doing this in 21st century digital/virtual spaces would definitely work.
    That said, I'm meh on the big ending. The process is good, though, and Darby is a great character.

    Not going to watch this show, but I did enjoy the movie "A Haunting in Venice (2023)". This movie had all the right kind of suspense and mystery for me. Did you watch it?
    Annie Lennox - No More "I Love You's". This song is nice to listen with curious vibe, but I could not understand any of its lyrics. My first ever weird song which I liked listening to.

      I haven't seen a Haunting in Venice, but I'll be sure to check it out! :)
      It's definitely a weird little song, but so fun, and the way they use it in the show is so sweet

      @@renrants I like shows where I have to overthink about the show to actually understand the show.
      That is what keeps me interested and anxiously waiting for the next episode to drop.
      If I cannot remember what I watched yesterday then that means I did not like that show at all.
      After which continuing to watch it would be waste of my time, so I immediately stop watching it.
      It is a 3 part movie:
      Murder on the Orient Express (2017) ===> This movie was boring, but the ending had a big surprise which I could not had guess at all.
      Death on the Nile (2022) ===> I did not like this movie at all.
      A Haunting in Venice (2023) ===> I liked this movie, but you might have to watch the other two movies before to get the point.

    Half way through the second episode now, but my partner is off to bed so I gotta wait till tomorrow to finish 😂 enjoying it so far definitely get the Devs vibes you mentioned but like you say very different.
    Writing wise I agree it's a bit clunky especially with the tech stuff, she's far too trusting for someone who is meant to be a hacker. Like sure let's download this random link sent to me from an unknown number and give it complete access to my phone and Bluetooth. And sure I'll sign the "standard" consent form I haven't read and give you my dna and my only contact with the outside world whilst you take me to some random place in the world come on you don't need to be comically paranoid to at least be a little bit suspicious of that😩.
    Enjoying it so far but I'm curious to see how sci-fi it goes, so far it's ever so slightly future tech but anyone else think there's something off about Zoomer? 🤔 aside from his terrible name of course 😂 we getting a sneak prequel to Steven Spielbergs A.I. 😂

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I saw someone in a group theorizing that Zoomer is actually the Alternative Intelligence here, which sounds very interesting. I think Lee is shady, especially after the third episode 👀
      Yeah, it was wild how she just let all that happen. The phone they at least justified to an extent, but everything beyond that felt kind of unbelievable to me 😅
      Can't wait to hear what you think of the second episode!

      @@renrants OK so finished the other episodes, I saw Rohan dying next a mile off, not sure if it was him on the phone though as we've already seen voice mimicry tech from one of the other characters. Definitely leaning towards Zoomer being a robot, Andy mentioned blending ai tech together to make Ray, so guessing it's a combination of that plus the self replicating self repairing robot tech we saw in that episode.
      Not sure what the deal with the masks is or who Rohan was communicating with, was also thinking that maybe none of it is real, they showed the vr/ar tech that zoomer was using so maybe as soon as she fell asleep on the plane she entered the matrix

    My job with the Air Force allowed me to spend a week in Iceland. Rode the bus from Keflavik to Reykjavik twice. Back in 78. African American servicemen were banned from being stationed in Iceland from WWII until about 1970. If transiting on a plane, they were confined on base or the aircraft. When I walked in the city, Asians were still rare enough so that I could see their eyes widen in surprise upon seeing me and looking back would catch some turning around looking at me. I did see one other Asian in the city. I tried to strike a conversation with some locals on the bus. Some spoke English well. The second time I recognized someone but he only responded after I said something to him. He said the he recognized me but elected not to say anything. I loved my time there and the people. They had the best hotdogs at a stand at the airport. The very best, tasty ones where the skins snapped as you bit them and covered with crispy bacon bits and three sauces. I guess Canada substituted for Iceland. Thank you.

      @renrants  Před 6 měsíci

      Fascinating! Thank you for sharing! I only ever passed through the airport but I always wanted to actually visit Iceland properly

    • @littleeva
      @littleeva Před 6 měsíci +1

      I wonder the real reason African American servicemen were banned from being stationed is Iceland? Was it because of the people in Iceland, or did the US have something to do with that?

    • @gmatgmat
      @gmatgmat Před 6 měsíci

      @@littleeva I was told that the Icelanders requested it, but this is just what I heard. I don't think that any other Scandinavian nation (under NATO) like Norway or Denmark made the same restrictions. Iceland is/was an isolated island nation. I don't think that US segregation had any part of the decision. African American servicemen were not barred from South Korea or Japan, nor I believe from Alaska or Greenland. I do like the country and people there. I think that if you travel enough, you can see many ways that people treat or react to outsiders. I say that they are people, like us but with different experiences. Thank you.

    Modern-day Sherlock Holmes? Not so much, the detective is smart but not intuitive. I could see no gotcha moment and she almost got herself killed by a dump trap (episode 5). Actually, she was rescued twice!!! Not to mention the flashback about her deceased boyfriend which makes up a big chunk of the show... when we are supposed to care about the investigation that eventually leads to the culprit of the deaths.

    • @renrants
      @renrants  Před 4 měsíci

      Honestly, I liked the first couple episodes, and I mostly used that phrasing because that's how the show branded itself, but I found the ending extremely silly and I the final product to be less than the sum of its parts 😅
      Overall I agree, it's no Sherlock Holmes

    Why is Gen Z needed to describe, the actual film descript on IMDb too, why not "Darby Hart, a **young** amateur sleuth, attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat." They think they're so cool and new age lol, S.F.W didnt have "Gen X superstud takes on the man, beating terrorism all in one"

    • @renrants
