Veterans Tip of the Week: Buddies are Good Medicine.
I had a great two days that really recharged me and helped me connect with a bunch of great veterans. It struck me that it was the simple act of being together and just grab-assing and sharing stories that made me feel better. And, I have to tell you I heard some great stories.
First was the annual Veterans Luncheon hosted by the Newburyport Yankee Homecoming committee. This event, coordinated by Veteran and MA SAVE (Statewide Advocacy for Veterans' Empowerment) Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Veterans' Services team member Donald Jarvis hosted 260+ Veterans from WWII through present day. And had some great speakers, Retired Navy SEAL Salvatore Defranco (who spoke on the very issue of staying connected to one’s buddies) and WWII, Korea, Cold War and Vietnam Navy Veteran Douglas Bryant who stays connected through participating in veterans events. I meet a WWII veteran from my town that I never knew about, and to see the smile on his face, tells me he had a great day too.
The next day was the Veterans Fishing Trip hosted by the 101st Airborne Division MA Special Events Home Base Chapter www.screaminge.... We had 70 or so Veterans, again men and women from all eras, fishing, smoking, and jawing. It was a fun, lighthearted affair. We were all just ourselves and had a chance to take off the armor for a while.
So how do you get connected? Couldn’t be easier. Check around with Facebook or the local veterans organizations for upcoming events, and just sign up. That’s all I did.
Veteran's Coffee Social is FB page that has some MA and NH coffee socials listed. Finding one in your area or even starting one yourself will really help you connect.
So why connect? Because it makes you feel better! Hang with some fellow veterans and just relax. Give it a chance and you will see.
