My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.

There's always the alternative, buy a timeshare in a hole on the water you throw money into. All the benefits of owning a boat but no sea sickness. Usually I charge 29.95 for that consultation but because you're a subscriber and it's New Year. It's on the house.
Like your style but you are talking about living aboard....what about the actual science of Marine preformance ....sail plans & standing rigging and underwater appendages like rudders , Keels, centerboards & daggerboards? Electronics , and the paperwork insurance and passage passport etc
I am french and owned 2 sailboats in japan, for sailing and also for living on board. My first boat was a 30 ft boat, my second was 26 ft, and as a minimalist, i spent much more time living on board and sailing on the 26fter, more than enough for a solo (at least with simple demands), and much easier to sail . Choosing a sailboat is a very personal thing, and no one can determine what is the best for everyone, because each individual is different. But since the 80's or so the boat market produced bigger and bigger sailboats to make money in the capitalist - materialistic /consumerist system. In the 60's /70's , a 25 ft or even a 22 sailboat was often considered as a quite big cruiser (all is relative ) and originally a sailboat is made to sail, not an "official house on the water ;),
still, it is okay to live aboard. biggeris better, get in on crashing boat market.
Not sure I entirely agree that it's best to buy a blank canvas rather than a boat fully outfitted for cruising. I bought a boat here in Australia that had just crossed the Atlantic and the Pacific and was therefore very well equipped. The previous owners had easily spent $75,000 upgrading to be ARC compliant etc and these upgrades had been done within the previous two years so almost everything was still working well. It would have cost me a lot more if I'd made all those upgrades myself. Having all those additional features like water maker, good battery and solar setup made our cruising much easier and more enjoyable and meant we could start cruising almost straight away. Maybe I got lucky that everything was well installed, although the previous owner had kept all his receipts which indicated most of it had been professionally installed.

@@ChasingLatitudes Yes, I think I got lucky on that one. One advantage of buying in Australia is that there are a lot of boats from the US and Europe that have recently crossed the Pacific and have had major refits just before leaving.

And honestly why not buy a boat that retains the option? Otherwise you have to sell a boat and go through buying another one all over again. If you don't know what you like now, you don't know what kind of fun you might be into in the future.

Love your no BS approach. The first rule in buying a boat. Get what works best for you. From there get it in the best shape it can be in. And if its got a compass its perfect. All the rest is on borrowed time anyhow. Noboy is going to do installation as well as yourself anyhow. Thats providing you have the skillset to do them. If not, have a blueprint of every system you have installed and get familiar with where things are with the tech before you leave. Up your confidence before your big adventure and you won't be worried about the what ifs.
Hi Chris, I’ve been a viewer for a while and I went against almost all of your advice and bought an old boat for $6k, and it needed a ton of work. I’m 2 years in, and I’m honestly glad I made the choice I made. I was fresh out of college with debt and I needed place to live. I knew I wanted to sail so I bought the nicest boat I could afford which wasn’t much. And while I’ve spent most of my time working on my boat (you warned me), I have gotten invited on countless sails including crewing to the Bahamas twice on neighbors boats. I think for someone who is young, broke, and enjoys boat work (especially glasswork) it’s not a horrible option. For people 30+ I think your advice is spot on, but if you’re a younger broke viewer like I was get the best boat you can afford and send it, I’m so glad I did.
I can't agree with you more. Fiberglass isn't biodegradable and I agree with the blank canvas analogy. I had an old Charley Morgan designed Columbia 34 for years. Those new Hunters, while space efficient look like Clorox bottles and those acrylic windows scare me.
I wouldn't take much the advice presented on this channel either. For the most part I would believe the exact opposite of anything he says. I'm not sure we're on the same planet.

I was very interested to hear your comments on the Hunter 356. I have a 2002 H356 and love it. The interior layout is great. It has lots of room, including a queen-size berth, and a separate shower. It sails great, and like you pointed out, cockpit is spacious. The stern rail seats are great along the the walk through transom. It also has mainsail furling which I particularly enjoy. It is great for solo sailing. I have done offshore passages on other people's boats. One day, I hope to do some serious coastal sailing on my H356.
Came for the boats, stayed for the humor and insight, left loving my 18ft sailing canoe even more...
Omg I built a awesome sail conoe! Yea. Thing was so much fun. It was fast. Mine was a 1970’s aluminum conoe. I put a sunfish mast and sail on her. But I left it in front yard and went to bed, woke up to a flooding raging river. It was gone…somewhere between wv and dc. Sad. Neighbor scolded me (cappy)never leave your boat without being tied up.
If the market is crashing , then you are buying a depreciating asset . Don't forget it . Older boats vary widely in value depending on condition . I would rather have a mint condition well upgraded and maintained 35 year old boat than a 10 year old one where the last owner used up all the equity and she is in need of an extensive refit . It is like a 10 year old car that no one did anything but drive .
On top one of the things with newer boats is they get way more complicated and the engines become less owner maintainable . They are also less proven and less likely to have known problems and fixes . But they do have some nice features .
So for me what I did was go after a well maintained older boat that would be way out of my budget if newer thus getting a proven boat with all the bugs worked out and problems known that is a better boat than I can afford newer .
One other thing about an older and smaller boat , it might attract less crime as it does not look like a fat target . Cheaper in marinas and on the hard too
Can you recommend some older years and models? I keep seeing these videos about certain years of certain models known to have major problems, in particular with the hull or engine, while others claim they are indestructible. I'm trying to find something sea worthy around 34 ft for under 20k. Or is that ridiculous?
I first got the sailing bug 5 years ago or so and made all sorts of plans about the perfect boat and flying anywhere in the world to get it. I've since become far more realistic after watching CZcams for years, now the plan is to buy whatever is available locally regardless of suitability, as long as it floats and will go and it's cheap it's good enough. I live on in the east coast of Canada so pickings are slim. The plan also went from sailing around the world to spending a couple of years island hopping the Caribbean, that's why just about any boat will do. If I decide after a couple of years building experience I still want to sail around the world I can get a better boat then, or upgrade the one I have depending on what it is. I want to get into it cheap and fast, I don't want to spend a lot of time shopping around and just trying to get the boat where I want it to be only to find I don't actually like it. Also don't want to spend a ton of money I won't get back, if sailing doesn't work out for me I'm going to go back to my usual method of travel and bicycle around the world.

This may sound like a silly question, but why do you hate Catalinas?
I was wondering that myself. Maybe a neighbours Catalina bit him as a child and now he has Catalinaphobia.
Because Hunter must have paid him a SHIT ton of $$$$ to make this video because anyone who knows ANYTHING about boat build methods and materials KNOWS that Hunters aren't pieces of SHIT they're the WHOLE damned heaping PILE !!! HeLL , they're the MOST turned away boats by boat yards themselves !!! In land lubber comparisons it would be like the difference between a 1970's Minnie Winnie and a 2024 Prevost Fully tricked out motor coach !!! If you want GARBAGE that wiLL lose what LiTTLe value they have faster than a mouses heartbeat being chased by a Bobcat , then knock yourself out !!! And @ least Catalina's actually uses fiberglass cloth layups rather than chopper gun spit @the inside of a mold !!! Hunter the company gained their fame back in the early 90's after having built , raced , and won the BOC single handed around the world race having built "Hunters Child" !!! After which they decided to try and cash in on their racing record / accomplishment building under built light cruising boats to sell to the general public one model of which was the notorious "HC 50" !!!
Many boatyards refuse to even haul them out due to potential damage that could be incurred due to the flexibility of the entire boats hull manufacture !!!

Interesting to see your perspective, now I feel the hunters are cheap cocktail boat. We went and looked at one very disappointing. Then we looked a Beneteau 390 pos. Ended up buying a Sweden yachts 38. Older girl 1985 the difference in fit finish, hardware, Volvo w sail drive skeg hung rudder. Everything just feels a different level. Wing keel. Phrf rating is 124 she pretty fast. The production boats feel like tin can car vs stout Mercedes where when you close doors etc feel is not cheap an whimpy. What are your thoughts on a Sweden yachts? And real world value? Thank you enjoy your channel and perspectives.

Would you consider doing a beginners guide to renting a charter sailboat video? Costs, licenses needed, best deals, seasons, etc.
Ugh, I do not like compost toilets. Turned down boats on that one -- one was a boxy Hunter. Did a lot of practice on a Hunter 27, the thing sailed really good-- this particular boat I would put up all the sails over power stall out then reduce from there-- a very forgiving little boat.

Yeh I saw that as well, Chris was blinded by the modern interior that he completely missed it had a double sink ! Also it’s has had some hurricane damage.
I can guarantee you get a good boat used in the west coast for 15 grand and under right now. I am literally the only guy looking for a sailboat in in my area sellers are begging me but I got my boat and I'm waiting for a few more days cuz I'm not worried about anybody buying it because I am the only onecome to the West Coast🎉

80% of "blue water" boats never see open ocean...hell...10% never leave the dock.
I am comfortable renovating my home. But i do have a fear of diy’ing (electronics) a boat. So a blank slate may be best and smart, but it is scary. Plus i’m old (bending is not my fav). If i pursue this interest, it will be a weekender or so coastal cruiser mediterranean (also bought there while living spain). Not a live-aboard. My thinking is a second-hand nearly new. That 28’ having the effect of being in a hurricane in normal water, is scary. The mediterranean waters is how rough on average? And your advice needing to get really good at forecasting weather is understood. I almost forgot, mediterranean spain concern, orcas and type of keel choice, would a swing keel help?

I love your down to earth, practical advise on buying a boat. Far too many perspective buyers assume they need everything they have seen on ocean crossing vessels. Your suggestion to go sailing to find out what you like and need is great. I am still on the fence pertaining to buying a boat or chartering occasionally. I have recently crewed on an Island Packet 29 from N C to Fla. Then crewed on a Jeaneau 50DS from Fla to St Thomas. Loved both experiences. I am considering getting a consultation package to get more experience crewing on one of your deliveries. Thanks for your advise.
Hunters are generally boats for people who do not care if the boat sails well . Great dock cottages though .

Sailing around Asia apparently is some of the cheapest sailing, purely due to the cost of living in those counties being much lower. Generally fairly safe as well.

Thanks! Great vid! Regarding that Hanse in your review, it looks like it also sustained damage in hurricane Irma. You jumped over that in the description. Does knowing that change your perspective on whether it's a good deal or not? I've seen a lot of hurricane Irma damaged boats on the market, but all of the charter companies give the standard boilerplate on how they've been repaired to manufacture standards. I'm wondering what your thoughts are overall on purchasing and Irma damaged boat.
normally doesnt bother me, depends on what the actual damage is, that particular vessel is a hanse 400 mislisted as a hanse 40, the hanse 400 normally goes for around 140k, so its quite a savings and at minimum worth investigating

I'm on the lower end of the spectrum- I found a "unicorn " Lightning on the class website a little while back- built in 2005, in storage for the last 5 years or so- mostly fresh water use- didn't see the sail # on the race results, so it checked out- and 4(!!) sets of sails in very nice shape- great beercan racer...

A fun hour. Thank you. I do have one question...You seem not to consider catamarans. I am a dingy sailer (Melges 14) and will never convince my wife to purchase a live-aboard. That said, I would think a catamaran would be the ideal boat for the live-aboard island-hopping you describe. Was it just pricing (catamarans are more expensive?) or was there some other reason you did not consider them.
PS, This was my first experience on your channel and I subscribed!

It is usually just the higher entry point that is hard for most people myself included. But with the current drop in prices you can now get decent cats in the 150k ish range :)

One last question-how do you feel about finding a fresh water boat over a salt water boat?
A lot of things need to be changed on a fresh water boat to become saltwater , bottom pain, certain seals, and various other things. There is a common misconception that some how a fresh water vessel is better and demands a premium, this is false

Most don't, dishes don't fit. And try filling a pot up. They're just too small. A single as deep as space allows is a huge improvement.

News flash, long ocean passages are a bore or they’re downright terrifying.
I'm not saying do this but definitely everybody's got their opinion on boats I've seen guys go across to Hawaii multiple CZcamsrs very little experience getting a s*** kicked out of them on the 26th or a 24-foot boat and they made it🎉 not my thing I'm on the west coast I have seven islands in front of me I could see three of the islands from the beach I stand on the farthest I'm going to go is 70 mi offshore to the farthest Island offshore of CA and I'm going to buy a 36 ft islander the boat is old but been well taken care of. The guy that owns it is part of the yacht club and takes his boat just about every weekend out to the islands. I think the best advice you can give somebody buying a used boat is buy it from somebody who actually uses it don't buy it from somebody who used it for a house on the dock because you're asking for trouble with a boat like that.When you don't move it dies . These things are important to know and look for its not whether the boat is 40 or 50 years old because we know a 10-year-old boat could be a piece of trash with the wrong person owning it.🎉❤ And that's coming from a commercial fishermen who's been around boats for 30 years🎉

I suggest buy a small day sailor or better yet a windsurfboard! Want to see the Caribbean? Airfare is cheap and will accomplish thousands of miles in just a few hours vs weeks! Once you get there simply charter a sailing vessel! Remember that you don't own the boat! The boat owns you! Sail boats tend to run a ground! If that happens that can mean shipwreck!
Why the hate for Catalina’s?
These hunters don't have a backstay, right? I sailed one of those for a few days and downwind was far from fun. Also any consideration for saildrive vs shaft drive?

Some more pratical advice look for a boat that looks like it's ready to go out meaning the ropes are attached to the masst and go back to the cockpit electronics are functional radios functional functional engine,they have a quality anchor setup if you have a 30-footer you need at least 90 ft of chain should have a 30 lb Bruce quality anchor setup means this guy is experienced and using his boat .I can't stress it enough.A sitting boat is a dying boat. If he says the boat has been sitting a year RUN!

This guy must work for Hunter. I used to haul sailboats . I never heard anyone who thought Hunters were as good as this guy says they are.
What is your problem with Catalina's? They have sold like hotcakes for some reason.
Flipped quickly for a profit, polished the britework, painted stains, maybe new sheets & lines, restained wood work ... still core deck rot, original seacocks, thru hull fittings & electronics ( depth/ speedo/ heat exchangers etc ) ... Flippers generally address cosmetic issues ( fiberglass cracks, spiderwebs ) but not foundational nor big ticket items ( mast, boom, windlass, engine, refrigeration etc ) because it's a "Flip for Profit"
