    Since over 20 years I drove my Speedhub about 51.000 miles and from the beginning, as an engineer, I'm searching how it works. Thank you very much for showing this valueable movie and the hint, that the small planet wheel is marked (because in this position there is the cover in line of the theeth). Now, as I think I totally have understood how it works, again I bow my head in respect for this technical design. I think they had a very skilled mathematic to find all these gear combinations makeable.

    Thank you Craig for making this video. This hub/transmission looks daunting until you break it down into its individual components. You did a great job, far better than most at explaining this engineering marvel. Thanks young man, take care and God bless!

      Damn it is.
      The gears are made out of such a quality.
      I am happy to work with those hubs everyday on my work.
      90% of our customers have one
      It's such a incredible trustworthy system.

    For those who are worried they cannot get that planet carrier timed again after removing it here's a tip: Get a hot glue gun and glue the gears on that carrier in their current position. It's like a cast that keeps the gears from rotating. Worked like a charm here. The glue won't stick and is easily removed afterwards. Make sure the glue has somewhere (apart from the gears) to hook into so it won't fall of prematurely. On top of the carrier are those holes you can use.
    On more recent hubs there is a ball bearing connected to the driver (at the 9:00 minute mark) That bearing is press fitted and also needs to be press fitted back into the hub shell. That requires you to use a hammer and gently hammer the internals back into place while also taking note of the position of those 9 nylon rollers that need to line up with the hub shell. And on top of that the rubber seal at the end of the hub has a tendency to get dislodged while pushing the end that sticks out through. You need to manually push that seal back into place with something like the end of a tie wrap. Don't put the internals back into the hub shell without triple checking every millimeter if that seal is not being dislodged.

    Now why didn't I think of that? Heck, all I do is click the shifter and boom I'm up or down easy peasy. Love this little beast.

    @Pkerce I just think it's cool to see what all goes into this hub. when you ride one its easy to forget all the engineering that went into it. And to remember how it goes together.... pretty impressive!

    I suspected a problem with the freewheel springs or one of the clutch springs and I did manage to get the hub apart, but no way the second planetary is going back together, the cogs never align, I'm done now after 6 hours of trying. Sending the whole wheel out to Rohloff in the morning. Thanks for the vid anyway :-)

      Hi: there are some small round punch marks on the faces of the six planet gears held captive in the planetary gear assembly.
      It's hard to see them in the carrier, or when there is any oil on it.
      If you pull out one of the planet gear axles (31 on the Rohloff Explosion gear hub drawing), you can see it on the face of the planet gear (23).
      They need to be aligned so they are all inside at the same places.

    • @climbercraig66
      @climbercraig66  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Stefan. I think any gear is OK if I remember correctly.... The pawls are retained by springs, and are either extended or retracted but should not fly out. All shift shaft pawls are retracted in gears 4 and 11.

      @@climbercraig66 i'm asking, because the pawls stay out and sometimes fall out at this point.
      Do you remember, if you could see the smal PU shim inside the shifting spindle? (At the top position, near the last sleeve with the pin)
      I try to figure out the dimensions of this PU ring

    The indexing is not straightforward. It is only by chance it sometimes works the way shown. Do you have a reference for how to index the pinions?

    I have a Rohloff hub that has recently been getting lost between gears. It is most pronounced after peddling hard in first gear and then shifting into 3rd, the pedals just free spin with no connection to the wheel momentarily and when I stop peddling it hooks up.
    I have removed the gear pack from the hub body. The plastic drive pins have a .003" imprint.Ring gears have a slight wobble to them. Everything is covered in black oily oxide, otherwise everything appears to be normal. I have not disassembled the gear stack yet. Do you have any advice?

    hey Craig thx for making this Video .
    Can you say me wich gear I have to choose before disambling?
    Because after servicing my rohloff I can shift only 6 gears from the highest to low an after gear 7 it returns to the highest gear !
    I hope you can help me please .

    • @climbercraig66
      @climbercraig66  Před 2 lety

      Hi Mac Jack.... Not sure, maybe your shifter was reattached out of alignment? I would try removing the shifter, manually shift the hub to highest or lowest gear, move the shifter to match, then reattach. If not that, than something with your hi/lo clutch may be reassembled incorrectly? Good luck!
