Thanks for joining me on a trip down memory lane ~ This game and its soundtrack meant a lot to me growing up.
If any of the years seem weird or off it's because there was no autosave in 2003 and my computer kept crashing.
Hi
Music TOO LOUD
@@idkyet3573 Turn your ears down
my PC back in 2003 kept crashing too
Even if the music was a bit, aggressive... and borderline dystopian.
Citizens: What are the city's future plans?
Mayor: Let me level with you
we're going to improve the Flats.
Mayor: and by 'level with you' I mean 'level you completely and your homes and businesses to establish a new society in my image'
*"and I took that personally"*
underrated comment.
"Let me level you"*
I will never forgive EA for destroying maxis and sim city forever. Rest in peace sweet prince
Same. Ever since they ruined Spore, I've despised them. Spore could had been something such breathtaking amazing thing. Schools and Research institutions wanted it because they saw the potential in it. But No. EA just, HAD To get their butterfinger in and ruin it completely instead of letting it be what the E3 had shown years ago. I'll never forgive EA for that.
Everything EA touches is ruined. The sims, sim city, spore all destroyed for corrupt corporate greed. Truly a shame.
@@Zeithri howd they ruin spore?
@@beef5able As far as I know they rushed the game and cut corners like crazy before putting it out. It was originally supposed to have way more content but they didn't feel like spending the time and money to finish it.
@@SimBits :(
The graphics still look great despite being so outdated
Something really is magical and timeless about that isometric style
And can be modded to look even more realistic, some have made them to look exactly like the town in your backyard down to every detail
@@metalisonline what's the point of realism? More realistic =/= more beautiful. It's mostly about artstyle, and the artstyle of Sim City's is superb.
@@kozlorog I'll throw your argument back at you. What if I find realistic models the most beautiful artstyle out there? That's the point, some people like it.
i prefer these type of graphics over 3d in many games i.e. aoe2 because 3d graphics always have anti-aliasing and it screws up with sharpness everything looks like 3d bulb
It's just so much more detailed the houses are nice in skylines but the skyscrapers are just so smooth and plastic
I cry for Will Wright, his creativity and genius crushed by the behemoth he helped create.
Eh, he kinda crushed himself by messing up Spore. He became the very thing he used to be the enemy of.
It was SIMPLY the Will of the people that HE do what was Wright for them--- can't fault a man for trying as my dad used to say!
@@SergeantExtreme Spore was such a disappointment but its sad one slip-up ruined what had been an incredible track record.
@@sayno2lolzisback Really? I think spore is his second best game he ever worked on. Sims 2 is number 1 tho by a long shot.
@@lucifer2b666 the overall consensus is that was bad. I played it a few times as the premise seemed so exciting but couldn't live up to it.
I forgot how lovely SimCity 4 is. Cities Skylines are good but goodness, SimCity 4 really is a gem
Yeep I agree both are great - I love all the things that Cities Skylines added, but there's just something nostalgic about SImcity's universe and Jerry Martin's soundtrack
@@ambiguousamphibian It almost feels like the buildings in Cities Skylines are "too big" compared to the old SimCity.
Was that a pun?
SimCity 4 still feels like the best city builder for me just due to the scale. Being able make a feasible massive metropolitan area with tens of different "cities" is something I wish came back in some form.
“Wheel of Progress”, “Deserted”, and “Terrain” are goddamn masterpieces; I think they even used the first part of terrain as a common sound bite in various different shows and media to emphasize desolation and despair
This one was just a masterpiece of all that came before it. Don't count on seeing any nostalgic playthroughs of Sim City 5 in the future.
I like to think sim city 5 never existed..... never thought time would kill this amazing franchise
@@notsoracistraspberry4168 nah Skmcity 5 is called "skylines" name changed but it payed off
@@trentr9762 actually yeah your right i forgot! Lol
@@trentr9762 You say that, but Skylines is barely a game. It's like declaring "Planet Coaster" is the new Rollercoaster Tycoon, but all you do is decorate a park and wait patiently for death.
@@Wourghk aye but for a first they did really well. And no other city builder that I'm aware of has that much mod support, land area and transit depth. It may not be perfect but it's a real good jumping stone. Though sadly it does burn out
My dad used to put tons of time into SC4 and my young self would just load up his marvels of cities, too afraid to touch anything and ruin his progress
Sharing is caring!
I love how he just completely forgot about the challenge and went berserk terraforming.
I remember playing this as a child around 10 years ago.
No, I didn't know what I was doing, I remember very well me trying to link up a city that had a river crossing it's land right in the middle using airports.

I haven't heard Build Mode 6 in over 20 years and It just hit me like a Mack truck filled with nostalgia.
I found a mod to replace the build/buy music in Sims 3 with those originals so I could dig that nostalgia more often.
Well, the game is from 2003, isn't it?
@@aramisortsbottcher8201 Build Mode 6 is from The Sims
@@MisogynyMan oh, now it makes sense. Thanks.

@@mikeyreza Things EA would of had to change: Allow offline play, bigger maps, actual functioning economy, cities that actually work with eachother, road ai that makes sense, highways, and the list goes on and on. Literally Sim City 5 could have simply been an upscaled and bug fixed 4 and it would have been better than what we got. Don't get me wrong, Skylines has MAJOR design flaws when it comes to RICO and zoning, and it the primary reason I don't often play it anymore.

It is still the best city building game and one of the greatest game ever
Idk Simcity 5 has better soundtrack. 4 is hella weird and funky for me
Cities Skylines tries to carry this torch burning bright (specially after EA gave the middle finger to us) but people today don't value this genre so much and unfortunately we are faded to disapear in the middle of those predatory cellphone games.
@@LordSevla cities skylines has only 2 densities and it's way too streamlined and easy on the economic simulation side

I always have a memory of my teacher showing this game to the class in primary school once, intrigued, but I never knew which game is it. And as soon as Amphibian showed the delicately pixeled terrain, it clicked immediately. After all these years (more than a decade) I finally got the answer. Thank you Amphibian and CZcams.

Everytime I played SimCity 4 I would build the perfect city by taking our hundreds of thousands of Sim money and after it eventually run itself into the ground with debt, I would begin the end of world. Earthquakes and random volcanoes everywhere.

@@dirpyturtle69 always. Their derpy asses are everywhere. Tried to call it to attention on a fb page once, but they had dozens and dozens of accounts and we're able to get me blocked for a "hate speech" comment that didn't even say anything remotely bad 😂
Big corps like money, bots raise view counts, increasing there income thru adds, so they treat bot accounts better than anyone else.. smfh
@@Lokiip that’s not true in the slightest. These bot accounts are a net drain on CZcams lmao. There’s zero gain for CZcams to employ bots that are literally stealing peoples passwords, bank accounts, etc. the problem is the fact that they are next to impossible to get rid of. It’s a game of whack a mole, you ban one bot and then 6 more have been made in the time it took you to do it. That doesn’t mean CZcams or Facebook isn’t doing anything about it, they are banning these accounts but they can’t stop new ones from being made.
You know those scam calls you get that claim to be the irs? These bots are sort of like that, except they prey on the tech illiterate instead of the old folks, by clicking on their link they can steal all of your data that’s in your cache and because no one ever clears their cache they can pretty much see whatever passwords you’ve entered into every website you’ve ever been to. The long and skinny is never click a link from a stranger on the internet
I also remember doing that and shitting myself at the sight of chaos and destruction
Your scripts are always shining beacons of rhetoric and memes. Thank you
"And so we continued the process of *suggesting* that our citizens relocate." A+ content lmao
This is really nostalgic. Now I wish that Cities:skylines make the farm industry the same as those big farms in SimCity4
Huge farms is something i would definitelly get behind
Yeah, i think farms in Skylines is locked behind Industries DLC (bunch of missing content is locked behind DLC in that game). Never the less i like cities:skylines after I bought all 20 dlcs (vanila is just demo for worldbuilding engine and tools that good expended), it really fells like something that i missed from my 2000+ hours on Simcity 4.
If you are Simcity veteran as i am then buy collection of Cities: skylines (yeah its more then 200 € and discounted 150€) and enjoy (i allready have 500 hours in it - didnt touched the mods jet so god help me if i do)

Maxis games have some of the best and most memorable music of any games I've ever played. I even heard some of the music from The Sims 3 in a commercial a year or two ago which I thought was fascinating honestly.
Simcity 4 by far has the best soundtrack for any city sim. Its just so perfect.
I enjoy the Sc3k soundtrack a little more, but only barely
@@Azmodaii Agree. Both very very good, but SC3k is just a bit better. To this day I really, really enjoy listening to both soundtracks while driving... its super chill and makes me think about the city planning (or just as often, lack thereof) that went into the roads, neighborhoods, and amenities that I see as I drive by. Awesome way to keep from getting bored when I run out of podcasts to listen to and don't feel like listening to "regular" music.
@@albertjordan3249 driving to Jerry Martin tunes will never get old. I also remembered the music from AA’s video being from the sims, loved that game too.

Couldn't chose between SC4 and SC3 soundtracks. I usually play with music off and both complete soundtracks in winamp on random.
SimCity 4's soundtrack, the beautiful jazzy sound of progress and hutzpah.
This was such a blast of nostalgia. I even still have the cheat codes for this game memorized. Used to just sit and terraform for hours. I loved the crater and plateau tools. I would make plateaus and put craters in the middle to make these huge cliff rings.
This makes me want to re-visit the game after 10+ years again. EA games were so good back in the early 2000s. We've had games like Sims, Sim City and Command & Conquer. I miss the old days.
There's still a decently-sized and devoted SC4 community on Reddit and Simtropolis. Come on down and stock up on mods. Will be great to have you!
@@Holgast Simtropolis is THE place to go.
Back when EA was full of people who were making games for the love of it and not doing it for shareholders and cozy million dollar bonuses
Watching this video was like visiting an old friend. I played Sim city off an on my whole life, until it was driven into the ground.
I really love how he hits the word "scholars" with the velvet sledgehammer of his voice. You can tell that and "Knowledge" are amongst his favorites.
When he said "Scholars roam the parking lot," I burst out laughing. The way he described random highschoolers loitering in the parking lot with such reverence was amazing.
Man I always forget how great maxis used to be, I always remembered them for spore and Sims but God they were the top dogs in PC gaming for a bit, all of those games are just timeless
Man I used to play SC4 for hours on end. So many great memories! The music, driving vehicles around your own city, the countless mods... Great times
I remember throwing in a 3.5" floppy in my grandmother's work PC to get some Sim City action in the early 90s, played many many hours!!
3.5" floppy in your grandmo-

This game is my childhood. I wish I had a way of seeing how many countless hours I've logged on it. Everything about this game is perfect to me, from the style to the music. Especially the music.

Modern games today just won't be able to hold candle to the classics, games like SimCity 4 and the OG Zoo Tycoon will always reign supreme.
I still get the SC4 itch every now and then, such a masterpiece. The art style and music are so timeless
8:49 my favorite part, made me laugh through my nose
U made me wanna play it again, this game was a childhood classic! I remember getting bored and starting downloading mods and making stories for my cities. Once I made a completely walled city (except for some farms in the outskirts) with a made up post-apocalyptic/Attack on Titan-like lore
I feel like I need to spend some more time in the psychiatric _Chutzpital_ to recover from this video.
do you guys know what that means
Beautiful, thank you. Tomorrow I will listen to the Sims soundtrack while doing some work on my house, it'll be just like build mode, except real life!
You're the greatest content creator on CZcams, period.
No fluff, no embellishment. No one even comes close to the level of entertainment that you provide.
Thank you.
This was like watching a amazing movie that made me forget about my surroundings. I know I won’t forget about this one for a long time
Thanks for this video! 4 has always been my favourite SimCity, and IMO the best. The soundtrack has been accompanying me on my walks to work for many years. I used to be quite active in the Simtropolis community for modding and city journals. I still need to put together the time and a proper modlist to make a full region and video playthrough. I'm glad that others have such fond memories of it, and hopefully your video will help the game find many new players!

Long live the dual kings of city builders: Sim City 4 and Cities: Skylines.
This is just too good. Your narrative had me laughing in tears. Good job!
Love your video! I love Sim City 4 too - alas, I can no longer play since it won't work on Windows 10. Your city was lovely and you get respect for being the mayor we all strive to be (and get away with). Thanks for posting so I can enjoy vicariously!
Sim city 4 + The Sims were my favorite games back then. The music alone is so great. It's a shame EA destroyed Maxis. I refuse to buy any modern EA products.
Yeah... I loved the interconnectivity.
You could use people from the Sims 1 to inhabit your town (in a limited function) and then the road maps in SimCity 4 could be used as neighbourhood layouts in The Sims 2...
Fun Fact:
If you are playing in city mode and you hold CTRL+ALT+SHIFT and click on God Mode. You get the full God Mode tools rather the restricted set of tools in city mode! Also the terraforming tools are free too since it's the full God Mode. So there's that.
The music brings me right back to playing sim city on mobile back in the day. Good stuff
Best SimCity lets-play I've ever watched. The commentary? Chef's kiss.
I feel like the "Outianapolis" joke is underappreciated.
Did you use any mods to correct traffic? I remember that was kind of broken in this game and made achieving highest density in the late game nearly impossible with all the gridlock
There is an error where if a loop exists between 4 cities a sim near the edge of town 1 will travel across the border for work, then across the corner between town 2 and 3, then through to 4 before appearing back in Town 1... before repeating. dependent on hiw often the towns were loaded.
so the road says 1 car, then 2 cars increasing by 1 each time the city is loaded
200 cars on the loop becomes 400 cars then 600, then 800.
any city boundary loop between the cities will end up in pure red with 32,767 cars... from one house.
@@Human-hs8sp That's kind of awesome in an absurd way.
There are quite a lot of mods for this game. One of them - the Network Addon Mod - fixes traffic problems, now allowing you to build high density cities
@@GreenIsTheWayForward Now I just have to get SC4 to run on Win10 😅 and there's all my time gone...

I remember fondly about driving vehicles in SimCity 4; it was a mini game of its own, tanks, UFO, trains, attack helicopters, cars…it was all tons of fun
A big city slowly leveling down? A lovely tribute to Mexico City.
You convinced me to play this game again. The best City Sim ever, more than Cities Skylines arguably.
I find it's got more charm and is more quirky, Citiies skylines is just quite bland in a lot of their buildings
@@frostyboi312 Can't agree more tbh.
Vanilla Sim City has its fair share of glitches, especially with Sim pathfinding and crime, people not being able to work at high tech industry, job and housing demand across cities in the same region could also be wildly out of sync, and the game can get glitchy with corrupting your sims. Cities Skylines has more traffic and roadbuilding tools, is more stable, and more options for industries, offices and beautification.
