  • We are going into the castle walls, but they are getting deconstructed because of repairs. It's getting repaired.
Now I'm sorry for not uploading this yesterday (for context, I said on my stream that I'll upload it Monday.)

interesting that the melody moves from channel 1 to channel 2 when it's the same instrument

Well, I think it’s because one is the Main melody and the other is a secondary melody. It’s like they’re talking to each other, which is what I tried to express.

It sounds like channel 1's strings has more attack at the note beginnings than 0's. At least that's what I was hearing by about 1:52.

recently, youtube has been recommending to me very small channels with less than 1000 views on their videos. most of the time i disregard them, but this one popped up and it looked genuinely interesting. im now instantly hooked. this is really cool.

Hearing the individual sound channels sounds as if you're playing a personalized copy of the game. Even if all copies of SM64 are the same, this would explain a popular theory as the music is densely layered while maintaining the overall melody and structure. Perhaps everyone playing SM64 for the first time remembers each instrument slightly different and more pronounced, therefore leading to everyone having a different experience within the castle walls. Either way I had no idea the song for the castle was structured like this with so many layers having different parts in the melody. That's definitely an interesting fact on it's own right, even if the castle is personalized or not. Maybe I've been playing too much B3313 but either way this was a great video good job

I thought so as well, until I found out about it. I’m wondering if one of the reasons why it doesn’t have a lot of channels is because it would be more taxing on the CPU, since the n64 didn’t have dedicated sound hardware (which was probably done to keep costs down)

@@mr.oscilloscope Very possible, Nintendo still had plenty of competition back then. That being said, the chip is able to make some pretty crumulant signals given it's age.
As for it being taxing on the cpu, you are also correct, since sound chips are basically DC/AC converters, the more precise a DC/AC converter is, the more the data size grows (8,16,32,64 bits). I'm not sure if the channel limitation has to do with the CPU only having 6 I/O pins free for this purpose or if it's a single pin (I didn't get to study a sound chip unfortunately), but if it's a single pin, having more channels could put some additionnal stress on the cpu, since it will have to handle them in a timely manner before it falls out of sync.
