This shows the tools but which dry wall putty do I buy?
Hi! You can use these if you like:
20 minute joint compound: amzn.to/3Nrw9MB
45 minute : amzn.to/3OuiPZp
90 minute : amzn.to/3noqLzp
Choose from which set time you want to work with the joint compound 👍🏽😊
not the one he used... can only use mesh with quick set mud
Love your technique. Nice and calm and thorough. And thank you for the mesh tape vs tape with joint compound. I detest fiba tape, always pokes through. But I appreciate the comparison and the cutting tips. Nice work. Quality care.
Love the suggestion to insert screws prior to installing the drywall patch! You do very good work. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thank you so much!
Only video I watched of this repair where that was done! Trying to start screws upside down is no fun. Much appreciated.
I had a 20"x30" spot in my downstairs ceiling I needed to repair (thanks to a small plumbing leak upstairs) and your video was so helpful! I've never attempted drywall repair before and was able to fix this myself with your help. Appreciate it!
Your videos are very detailed. I appreciate you showing the various angles to draw the mud across the patch in real time. It is a slow process but not the "magic" other videos focus on. Like your channel very much.
Overall excellent job. Very nice cutting of the sheetrock- nice and square. Notice how he correctly left a 1/8" gap around the border. This allows for expansion without cracking. He also correctly predrilled the drywall and went in about one inch (minimum) from each corner. It was good that he allowed ample drying times for each layer. If not, it can crack over time. Do NOT rush it with a hair dryer. If it is a day with high humidity, drying can take much longer. Thin coats are always better than heavy coats.
He did many things right, that most "experts" fail to do.
A few minor suggestions to make the repair even better would be...
1. Use TAPE (better/stronger), not mesh. And never mesh in corners. Tape you have to do a mud layer first to seat it. Not sure why he used both here- maybe just to show the techniques. For the rest of us, just use one or the other and usually TAPE. Do not overlap the tape like he did. It raises the repaired area and it can become noticable. On the final coat, use TOPPING COMPOUND vs. the regular joint compound used in the first 2 steps. So that final coat will be a thinner, easier to work with and more sandable "SKIM COAT." Of course, they sell a specialized product but many people will simply add a "little" bit of water to their joint compound.
2. Never drive the screws in quite as deep. By doing so you break through the drywall/paper. This always reduces the strength of the hold (screw holding power.) Just go very slightly deeper than flush. A trick is to set the drill to a very weak setting and adjust as you go one click at a time. better yet, get close with the drill, then finish manually the old fashioned wasy (manual screwdriver.) Just take your time and be careful to not go too deep. When in doubt, you can always add an extra screw or two for added strength. Just keep them at least 2" away from each other when possible.
3. Learn how to feather and use a larger drywall knife. When using that knife and also when sanding, it is very important to apply more pressure and angle it to the outside. This will limit or eliminate a hard line on the inside area. when sanding, avoid straight lines. Some circular sanding motions may help too. Do not go hard- let the paper do the work.
I’m a handyman trying to rapidly build a bunch of core skills. Your reply here made a lot of sense and helped me a lot! Though he’s a bit smug, I’ve loved watch the Vancouver Carpenter channel for master drywall work. You think he’s good?
@@sethburkhart1021 Glad it helped. Don't be in a rush to learn. Practice- even on small pieces at home instead of on a customers project. Once you learn the basics, you should be fine.
Be careful on ladders and always protect your lungs too- wear quality protection- not just a paper mask. Over time, these chemicals can do real harm like random lung cancer at a young age. I have seen it and you don't want that. Wear eye protection too- that dust can get into your bloodstream via your eyes.
I am not familiar with that Carpenter. Just take knowledge from people- their attitude does not really matter. You are not their friend.
Good luck.
@@UTAH100 thanks so much. I’ll take that advice too!
I love when there are knowledgeable individuals in the comment section awesome job bud. I'm here because I have no formal drywall skills and this video and you educational comment really puts my mind at ease. Thanks a million bud.
@@Dugar1 Glad to help. I learned by doing- making mistakes and YT. You can too.
Your instructions were very simple and clear. I was able to fix a hole in my ceiling all on my own! Thank you for the video
One of the best explanations I have seen, thanks
Great video. Can you also show how you match the texture and paint after the patch is done?
Take the piece you cut from the ceiling first to home depot or Lowes and they will match it for you, prior you get started with the project
I like your teaching style thanks for helping us!
The trick apparently is, to, instead of drawing your desired square up on the ceiling and cutting that out 'first....just cut your 'piece of new drywall first'...then place it up on the ceiling and draw around that. i'll be doing one here soon myself.
Thank you for the advice! 👍🏽😊
Great job and very simple instructions to follow
I’ve learned a lot from this guy!!! Great content creator!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Super helpful! Thank you!
Excellent job done.
Weldon.keep it up in every clip.
Thanks
We'll be following your steps this weekend - such great instructions - but HOW do we match the texture? Thanks for your help!!
Thanks for the video, very well done. I’m new to the DIY and trying patch a hole in my ceiling, just was wanted to know exactly what you used for the repair. You mentioned the tools, is there just one type of “joint compound” to use, and if all three coatings were the same compound, just applied three times? Thanks again very informational and I like the way you made it look very simple. You inspired me to do it instead of hiring someone….lol
Professional finish 👍
That was beautiful, I absolutely loved it, I learned plenty, and you are definitely a true saint
Thank you so much for the love and support! Means a lot! 🙏🏽😊
Really good and informative!
This is exactly what I needed to see! Thanks
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏽😊
Learned a lot, thanks !
awesome work
I'm glad I found your video! I will be giving this a try instead of paying someone to patch the ceiling around my ac duct (:
Done hundreds of these. Same day repair and paint.
Excellent Video!.. I loved it!..
Thank you looks great!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽
Great job! 👍🏻💥💥👏🏻
Man that was an awesome video thanks
Thank you i learn something great😂
Great video! Question concerning light fixture wires… once you cap them, can you leave them be in the attic area or did you remove them entirely later on? Thanks!! 😀
good. explain...thanks
Thank You! 🙏🏽😊
Jeez bro that’s soo perfect
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽😊
How do you match the finished ceiling texture after you have repaired the hole? Do you have a follow-up diy youtube video on how to do that?
Thank you SO MUCH! My place was gutted and flopped-disaster after disaster. I need more attic insulation, which inspector noted, but before I do that, I need the cheap plastic LED can lights GONE-cheap garbage, falling out, leaking heat and WAY too bright. I never use them.
Ver y good video ,thanks
Thank you 🙏🏽!
Great video - how do you fill in real small circle holes and retexture the ceiling???
Great video! What if you have a circular, large light set into the ceiling and the repair has to go all around it? Obviously, you have to drop the light down to work on it, but how do you cut the hole in it exactly where it's supposed to go?
I've followed this video (and similar ones) and used 2 planks to attach the patch to the ceiling/existing drywall. It causes a small problem: screws force drywall patch to be at a certain angle. Are there tips on how to have them hold the new drywall piece in place but not dictate angle of the patch? Thanks!
It looked like you were completely removing the can in that location. A video on how you did that would be awesome. This way we don’t need to put up cover plates when removing an unnecessary fixture. That would be amazing! 😃
Thank you for this. I will be using it. I stepped a hole into a bedroom ceiling from my attic. I'll let you know how it goes!
Same just today 🤦🏾♀️
How’d it go?
I had this done to my ceiling by some contractors. It's pretty good, but there are minor uneven spots with the plaster. You can't really notice it at all in normal lighting settings and it looks pretty good, but when I put a flashlight alongside the ceiling, you can really see the bumps and where they plastered. Is this to be expected? I can send you a video if you'd like...
I'm new to your channel and to all of this. I have a passion to learn of these things you teach the only suggestion I have is do you have a beginners video for how to use a tape measure and how to accurately measure? Sounds a little dumb but I struggled with that for month, measuring how to cut straight lines after measuring I think that would be a great video. Theast thing is thanks for taking the time to show us this.
How have you improved over the last 2 years?
I've actually learned how to frame and after I pass the framing inspection I'll move on to wiring. I'm learning the best teacher is experience with some help from CZcams.@@TheGodYouWishYouKnew
ayos!
I am patching around an electrical outlet; the existing drywall is 5/8. When I add the 5/8 drywall it leaves very little gap for the joint compound. Is this okay? Or should I be using 1/2 inch drywall so the gap is greater for the joint compound?
Koooool vid bro 😎. Plain and simple instructions.
Thank you 🙏🏽!
Nice 👍
Thank you 🙏🏽!
So after the joint compound you primed it then paint?
Can this method work for a water damaged mobile home ceiling?
This weekend, I shall be carrying out this very procedure on two ceiling holes around light bulb sockets.
A dewalt man. Nice.
Yes DeWalt is awesome 👍🏽😊
You have to put the tape over the mesh tape?
Good job 👍
How do you make the wet joint compound?
What if I need to replace a bigger section like 24 x 36 inches? It's in a corner where the wall meets the ceiling and steps...
How do you add the "knock down" look after done?
Hi, I absolutely love your videos.
Can you tell me how to remove plywood from the wall? I am having a difficult time removing it. Please help!
Hi! Please show me a picture! Here is my email : fixthishouse1@yahoo.com
How do you make it look like the rest of the ceiling??
Can you show how to do a corner hole repair, that is flush with the wall
I believe your supposed to use hot mud with mesh tape, what I've heard and read.
Never heard of hot mud 🤔
Very nice, but which tape do you recommend? But great stuff
Hi I recommend joint tape : amzn.to/3AtZm6q
what compound did you use ? did you use the same one for the skim coaat?
you can use taping mud for both (thinned down on second pass), but if you want it to be really secure, use hot mud on the first round, then lightweight mud on the following rounds.
Why wait 1 day for it to dry? U could use a heatgun. Also a wet cloth smoothes the finished job nicely😮
❤
great video. I paid someone $400 to patch up a small area. Your video let me know that I could have done it myself. Thanks
Always
I can tell there was a patch there, you just fixed it. :P
What size are the screws???
1 1/4
That knife is to cut tomatoes!!🤣🤣🤣😎🇲🇽🍺👍
😂
👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you 🙏🏽
If you were to do that for someone how much we would homeowner be charged
About $2,000 cash money 💰
That was patching. Not a repair. A repair requires one to fix the texture as well.
You are definitely a beginner...lol
Nice 👍
