The 'lowly unsung hero'...good old quart zip lock bags.
Just got back from 9 glorious days in the Keys. I used quart plastic bags for everything. It isn't cute but saved tons of space 😁
Practical can make your life so much easier! No shame in that game
And you saved a lot of money!
But what about the environment?
@@akramrostami9897 Reuse them as many times as possible. Rinse with water if needed! 😊
@@akramrostami9897 I sew my own little baggies out of old fabric from shirts or cute things that don’t fit or I don’t use anymore.
I use luggage tags but also use the return address labels inside my suitcase. Also take a picture of your suitcases before you hand them over at the airport! If your suitcase gets lost, you will be asked for a description. A photo definitely helps!
Great idea!
If you wear a hearing aid in the airport. Would security stop me if I don't show it
@@carriemcgrath79 Hi, they do not need to see them. This video may help: bit.ly/TravelTipsHearingAid
Excellent tips, especially about baggies or small pouches.
AirTags are very useful so you won't forget a bag, wallet, and for locating Luggages,
I just got back from 2 1/2 weeks in Italy and Greece. I never leave the house without a fold up fan in my purse. The plane was delayed on the runway for one hour and my friend and I were able to stay semi-comfortable using the fans we bought for .25 each. It takes up so little space, but when you need it, it is there for you.
Oh I just discovered a hand fan that is super strong! Good point-they do not run both engines now for a long time.
I have a small collapsible round fan. It fits in a square fabric case of about 2 and a half inches. I just get it out and it opens up and hey presto, instant air flow. It came in handy while at an outside do, no breeze and so hot. I just got my circular fan out. Friends wanted one too.
Yes! I’ve travelled with a folding fan for years and it has rescued me many times. I grew up before AC, so I remember the church ladies working their fans on hot Sundays in the south.
The only neck pillow to fly with is “Tubular Travel -Tube Travel Pillow”, tube you stuff with clothes! I’m able to pack PJs, jeans, 2 shirts, bra and underwear in one, frees up more space in your carry on, made by Donna C in Jacksonville FL
That sounds awesome!!!!
I just can't get past this; it's creative though.
I had to go check it out. I’m trying to figure out what material it’s made from… is it nylon?
Does this product shop internationally?
@@newpixieartist You will know if you go to the link in the description box. I would think so.
I love travel pouches, but if you’re looking for a budget option, mesh laundry bags will work in a pinch!!
Love that packing idea!
That’s what I use because they take up little room, come in so many sizes & when I visit family I take a few extra ones so I can add my clothing to my family’s laundry without losing my clothing.
2023. Just returned from Australia and our room had no flat surfaces except bedside tables We used your ironing board hack and it was fantastic Thanks for all of your tips! Happy traveling
So glad that hack helped!
Laurie! I just love how you go right into your topics when doing your videos, then AFTER a few minutes of showing us stuff, then you introduce yourself and what you're about. I wish more youtubers would do it that way.
So do I. I get impatient with loooong introductions. Just get to it!

Another way to pack jewelry is to lay it out on GLAD Press 'n' Seal. Your necklaces will be tangle-free and when you seal it, you can still roll it up and put it in a plastic bag, but really you can stuff it anywhere.
Great hack!!
what an amazing hack!!!
Yes! This works great! 😊
Do you have to pack extra for repacking or will it reseal after one or 2 uses?
@@betsybrady8520 it reseals in my experience
I travel overseas several times a year. Doesn’t matter how long I go, only take a carry on. I use a pouch that attaches to my bra strap for hidden cash and even a credit card. And just recently acquired socks with a zipper. Every ounce counts, so I have mastered light packing.
Love your suggestions.
Yes weight would be so difficult to deal with.
Socks with a zipper?
Only carry on for me as well. The only issue I ever have is shoes. I like to have a selection. I wear the biggest pair to the airport. I've started hanging a pair on the outside of my carry on and haven't had a problem.

When tsa checks on you your cash is still attached on your bra? I want to bring cash but do I have to put it on the bin container for check up (international travel)? I feel confused now. Thank you if you can give me a tip.
Have a blessed day.
I travel a lot &. ideas:.🙂 Take a picture of any luggage, if lost, helpful! 😇 Carry small flashlight/extra batteries, power out, urgent! 🐱 Also small nite light, unfamiliar hotel room, etc avoid toe smash! ♥️🇺🇸

I know this is not in everyone’s budget, but I travel weekly and I ALWAYS carry my black cashmere scarf from White and Warren. I got it as a gift years ago and it is a blanket and a scarf. It has saved me thousands of times and is a beautiful, timeless piece. They sometimes (rarely) go on sale for 20-25% off. I especially like this one because it is big enough to use as a blanket but also upgrades any outfit
Such a great piece! Thanks for sharing, Liz.
Dont know if this was mentioned yet, but string your necklaces through a straw will also keep them from getting tangled up. Happy bday Ollie!
Thanks!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurieI love your channel, and travel videos!
I keep an old trunk organizer in my closet that holds all my travel stuff. Luggage tags, shower shoes, small sewing kit, electric adapters, money belts, travel bottles and anything I only use for travel. It’s great because I always know where my travel stuff is.
I even have a box of 1 quart Ziplock bags, leftover from when we had to put all our liquids in them!
Good tip, I also have all my travel stuff in bins so I'm not searching everywhere.
I keep all my travel stuff in a plastic box in the closet. I have a travel toiletries kit that I refresh after each trip, so I just have to pull out the bin, take what I need, add clothes & electronics & I'm ready to go.
I always travel with toiletries in the large Ziploc bags, and within that anything that is liquid is in another snack ziploc bag (tooth care kit in medium bag for convenience to just pull out as one, same with face care). This double-bagging has saved me before. With the changes in pressure that your liquids go through on a flight, it's easy for them to burst their containers.
I have a very small quick dry travel towel from REI Co-op Which comes in its own mesh Velcro bag! I use it as a travel blanket, car seat cover (so I don’t burn my legs on a hot rental car seat), emergency towel for spills, and, of course, to use as a towel if I needed one! Can’t travel without it.
Thanks for sharing!! I’ll look it up.
I’ve never thought to use my travel towel as a blanket. Smart!
Yes, I have one of those too! Handy things.
They are a must have for any holiday where you go to the beach. We always throw our travel towels in the scooter with our goggles. You can wash them at night and they are good to go in the morning. And it's my layover blanket. Choose a dark colour and good quality. Ours have done at least 10 trips.
You channel name should have been Smush and Sqoosh! Lol 😉
Bwahahaha love it!
another favorite of mine for earrings are those chiffon bags with ribbon closures that gift shops often put earrings in. super lightweight, small, and you probably have them lying around already
They often have those bags in the craft section at the dollar store especially around Christmas time. You can find mini size zip top baggies there as well. They are sold to store beading supplies but they are great for pills and other small items.
Laurie I just came back from Mexico my first flight in over 20 years. I watched all of your videos in preparation for TSA rule compliance, packing tips and more😀Thank you so much everything went so smoothly I was well prepared before I even got to the airport by the time I was sitting on the plane I was so proud of myself. Your videos saved me a lot of anxiety and I was "cool as a cucumber" thanks Laurie your the best!!💜

Glad you had a great trip im Off to Mexico on the 18th for my bday jus wondering for makeup what if u have only carry on bags and your liquid bag is clear but it only fits a couple things in it can I put that liquid bag inside a non see thru makeup bag or do they have to be separate
Also if I already filled out my Fmm form how do I go about that when I get to the airport also where do I go to get that printed out before I leave and Is there anything else I need for documents or anything else I need to know where to keep things does my liquids bag go in my carryon suitcase or person bag and do I switch it to my personal when I get past tsa or how does that work ? Also did u convert your
US dollars at the airport in Mexico or at a convert center before you went to the airport ? And what kind of water bottle do I bring if most are to big ? this is my first time flying and I’m extremely nervous
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie how about medicine bottles? I have removed my Rx meds for literal years and never had a problem. I would pack essentials, my Rx meds in those little sectioned pills cases. They are abx, in case I get travelers stomach issues, otc pills for gas (bubbly blonde) & other Rx pills now that I’m aging ungracefully. Well US customs was going to arrest me unless I could validate my meds in my container not in the Rx bottle. Now I need to take 10 bottles including over the counter meds? This is going to take up room in my otherwise perfect organizational skills. What do you suggest, so I don’t have to get an entire new suitcase to haul my meds in “proper bottles” along with my girdle & tennies. I’m 68 & too old to smuggle anything there & back outside of a good small memento of my trip.
My favorite international travel hack: When you have a pair of socks (or any clothing really) that are about to wear out, put them in your suitcase. Then you can wear the item one more time on your trip and toss it. Makes room for souvenirs, and no dirty laundry in your bag!
I do that too, I would bring old undies, slippers, even PJs, then leave them in the trash at the hotel. Less stuff on the return trip.
I do the same. I even did it with a pair of shoes and jeans. We were visiting family of a friend in Hawaii and the family wanted to take them, wash them and donate to charity. So win-win.
I did that in Europe.
I did that with a pair of sandals on my last trip to visit the US. The plan was to toss them before coming home, and buying new ones. I ended up wearing them for the 2 month visit, and since I was shipping a box home, I threw them in the box. Now, almost 3 years later... I am still wearing them ha ha 😎
This hack is for any travel; domestic or foreign. I've been doing this for years. Especially good for underpants. I normally wear cotton ones. They are bulky so being able to discard them after wearing saves space and weight.
Compression packing cube does help lesson space needed in suitcase.
when travelling with wet wipes put them into a ziplock bag to stop them drying out in your bag. It’s something to do with the environment in flight.
Or preferably, avoid wet wipes like the Plague. They're an enrivonmental nightmare.
@@mehitabel1290 So is using clean drinkable water, laundry detergent with chemicals that get into the ground water and electricity to wash cloths.
@@gingereaves4097 Yes. But unlike Wet Wipes, none of those things block the sewer systems, so workers have to suit up and go down there to prise the indestructible hankies out of the grids, to allow the sewage to flow again.. Moreover, in many countries, the water you're using for washing yourself or your clothes isn't drinkable. And have you ever heard of eco-friendly detergents, or washing cloths (clothes?) by hand..?
I do find a good quality neck pillow to be worth it. I also turn it what most people would consider to be back to front, precisely to stop my head from lolling forward when I doze off
and i thought i was the only one who did that !! :))
Hi. I would disagree about the luggage tag. It takes up no space and provides contact info should your bag get lost. I just put my name, number, and e-mail. It's come in handy, not for me, but for a travel companion when someone took her bag at the Dubai airport. I would also put that same info inside the bag.
Great idea!
My luggage tag hides a travel sewing kit. It was a promotional gift I found at an estate sale. Comes in handy!
Yes, I have put that information in my luggage. 😁
I agree that a name tag with name, phone and email is very useful. But don’t spend money on a cute one. I’ve had cute ones stolen. Instead, I get the cheap type that no one would want to steal.
To identify my bag, especially the one I check in, I tie cheap coloured ribbons on the handle. They can be a single bright colour or two colours tied together. The colour should be easily spotted. I once saw a woman lifting off my bag with its bright yellow ribbons from the luggage carousel, and she was on the other side of the carousel. Lucky those ribbons were so eye-catching - no mistaking that it was MY bag.
Airlines put their own stickers on your suitcases now so they can identify it without you putting the name tag on it. But the name tag is definitely good if someone accidentally picks up the bag thinking it’s their own. I agree with Laurie that you should put the name tag on your bag as well as tie a scarf or some other unique colored tape on it so it looks different than everyone else’s.
One of my favorite pack-light hacks is putting the liquids and gels I just need a bit of (face scrub, aloe, neosporin, ichthammol, benadryl cream) in contact cases. I can travel for a month at a time with enough sunblock, bug stuff, and shampoo plus those littles in my quart-sized ziplock. I use Bite toothpaste bits instead of regular paste. Happy trails!
Great tips, Laurie! Thanks for sharing! 👍🏼👍🏼👊🏽👊🏽
I use paper or plastic straws to run one side of a necklace through, so I never worry about tangles. The straws can be cut down for short chains. I also use small plastic pill bags to keep earrings apart and rarely pack more than simple gold & silver jewelry which will go with anything.
Exactly what I do too.
Necklaces won't tangle if you fasten them before packing
Hi Laurie, I don't travel as much these days, but I enjoy and use many of your travel tips. Thanks so much!!!
Your pup is adorable! Enjoy your channel.
I always travel with a shawl. Folds up small. You can cover your legs if you get cold - something I suffer with all the time, especially on planes. If it's windy, or you're visiting specific sites where you need to cover your head, you're good to go. Much more versatile than a cardigan, and much smaller. Also, if it gets stained, much easier to wash out and faster to dry on a towel rack than a heavy cardigan.
I also usually travel with a super thin insulated travel mug. It will fit in the cup holder that some planes have. I have an old cloth bag with strings to pull it shut that is deep enough for the cup to fit in. If there is no cup holder, sometimes there's a hook that the cup in the bag can hang from. You can get your beverages served in them, and they'll say hot or cold. You can use the cup on your vacation. And you're not creating more waste.
A tip I got from a friend is to utilize the covered part of the baggage tags for tape. They're great for securing the tops of shampoo in your bag, as they are extremely strong and moisture resistant. They'll also hold up a hem in a pinch, or many other uses. They can be cut to whatever size you need, as there is usually about 2 ft of wide stickiness to work with.
Yes if that is what helps, pack that essential.
I've recently found your videos and am binging them. Thank you! Here's something I've been needing for years, but haven't yet found: a way to pack/protect underwire bras (lined, like for under t-shirts)! I've resorted to putting them in a corner of the top of the suitcase, and stuffing them with socks/undies to try to keep their shape, but they sometimes get smashed/creased!! Please also let us know if you ever find a compression packing cube that's mesh. I can't function if I can't see what's in the cubes. Thank you!
Hi the newer cubes are see through-ish so to me they are better than mesh. Look at the white ones. You can see them better in my christmas gift ideas from amazon video: bit.ly/3FZfSi5

Love your videos! Thanks for all the great ideas! When I cruise, I pack a foldable over the door shoe bag. The pockets work great for extra storage since the bathroom vanities are very small.
Yes, such a great travel hack!
I always tether my wallet inside my purse/bkpk, with a retractable clip. Great peace of mind, against leaving one’s wallet on the counter, when in a hurry, distracted, or a zipper left open! One (or all!) of which generally occur! There is a version of your minimalist RFID card holder with a small D-ring built in, to clip to.

Agree with everything you said. Love your videos! So helpful. I have packed a lot lighter over the years. Although haven’t flown in quite a while but your videos definitely still work for packing light for road trips. I love bringing a light turkish towel on a trip to use as a scarf or wrap around my shoulder on a winter walk on the beach watching the sunrise. And it is so thin and takes up very little packing space. I also use different colored mesh zipper bags of different sizes for organizing items in our toiletry/overnight bag. I have a travel scarf that has the pockets for passport etc-it's big enough I can use for blanket or shawl or as infinity scarf. Great for hands free yet accessible. I use it even in summer if flying as airports/planes are COLD
Yes, I love mine!
My travel hack is I always travel with a small extention lead with 2 regular sockets and 4 USB sockets with a current breaker in . that way I only need 1 plug converter for the country of stay and all other plugs can be used at the same time .. and there is a little more space away from the wall to safly place your electricals .
Happy travels everyone xx ❤
We do that too
Yes and especially for a cruise ship
I only just found your channel (which is great, btw!) but have evolved into doing these same things over the years. I'm a minimalist when it comes to packing and don't like to bring a bunch of stuff I probably won't use. I like multiple-use items.
Great Information. Thank You for taking the time to make this video.
Thanks for watching!!
I put individual jewelry pieces in small clear craft bags, then put them all in pouch together. The bags come in varying sizes too. Great for jewelry, meds, any small items you need to corral and take up little space. Also, with school starting back soon, there will be a lot of pencil cases available, hard and soft side, that can work well for pouches. So agree about the travel pillow. We use them on long haul flights but otherwise they stay at home. And always, always, carry a long charging cord so when you get stuck in the airport, you can bridge the gap between the electrical outlets and where you may be sitting. Not all airports have seating with electrical plugs every couple of seats, especially regional airports.
Awesome! Yes and you can use a sunglasses case for jewelry too.
I love the pencil case idea. That would be good to organize my personal bag.
Dear Laurie, Thank you! So many of these are brilliantly-simple yet are new to me. An ironing board… super idea.
Your reviews are timely & welcome. So many sparkly things on Amazon caught my eye (COVID surfing). Helpful to know if they are truly ‘essential’.

I liked the soap sheets prior to covid only because we had experiencedlow or no soap when travel. Now places have to comply and fill soap dispensers. Love your videos.
Yes so maybe just pack one to be sure.
A lot of Asian countries do not even have a place for a soap dispenser. Most people usually carry their own soap, hand towel, and sometimes toilet paper, so most public restrooms simply do not provide these things anymore. And COVID has not changed that.
@@colorjunkie thank you for sharing. Good to know.
Just got back from Italy and ran into empty soap dispensers a few times
Wonderful!
I use a silicone sandwich bag for 4 perscription bottles. The traditional 7 day pill divider rests on top of the bottles and still zips closed.
From Etsy I ordered an embroidered strap with my last name instead of a traditional luggage tag. It's that strap stuff like a dog collar and comes in color choices.
Another great video!! Stay cool, it's hot here in Texas lol.
So hot! Except in the airport lol.
I always get cold on a plane, I always wear a sweater or hoodie but still freeze. I found a beach towel that fold very small and I use that for my travel blanket, as we usually travel to tropical destinations. Even if we don't always need a beach towel at the resort we usually do need one on excursions.
That’s great that it’s more than one use.
I have a Sand Cloud beach towel that doubles as a blanket because I ALWAYS need it in airports.
@@wendio5437 I just bought one for a trip to the Caribbean.
Hi. Love your tips. Very practical.

Thanks so much!
Good video. I bought a stand up pencil case in the school supply section of my Walmart store. Very versatile to use for my dental supplies and make up on the hotel countertop. It looks just like the brush case you show. Also, I have found several new small and medium pouches at our local Goodwill store. I will be traveling internationally next year for the first time. So excited already and it won't be until June. :o)
I love these budget friendly tips.
Love the stars sweater. I use my husband's business card for my luggage tag and put it in my bag. A ribbon on the handle of my suitcase to easily know which one is mine.
Yes, hubby does that too. Yes, love the ribbon idea.
Great comments, Laurie!! Thank you!

Thanks and the vids have been enlightening! Taking our first trip to the UK this summer. Your tips have been extremely helpful and my check list isgetting longer as a result! Thanks! Will continue to watch.
Have fun!
Hi! I really appreciate you travel tips! I’m from Canada, and my husband and I are taking our first real holiday at the end of May (we are in our sixties, married for 45 years, so this is a honeymoon, of sorts). My number one bucket list has always been Ireland! I am excited to see my ancestral homeland, and hope to discover a few cousins.
Have fun! What a magical trip!
When I'm at my destination, I don't keep cash in my wallet, but instead take out almost all of the Kleenex in a purse pack (the kind that fold - On the Go packs) and put my paper money in that. It may not help if the entire purse gets stolen, but if you re being pickpocketed they probably won't bother with it.
Great idea.
Great idea, much less drastic than a lady I heard of, that uses a small diaper (clean one) she slices a pocket into the middle of it and puts in a very thin canvas bag containing her money and other valuables. She then rolls it like one would a dirty diaper and puts it in her bag, uses some brown eye shadow on the side fringe to aide the illusion of a dirty diaper. Not only does she not get pick pocketed, apparently once, she left the purse for a moment and saw a would be thief fixing to grab the purse, recoil at the sight and leave it alone. As effective as that probably is, I like your idea lot more.
Yes! I talk about that in a travel hack video. LOVE that hack.
Oh my word! That's funny and odd.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie To be honest, I have my doubts as to the veracity of the account, but stranger things have happened.
Have not flown in 20 years, so I appreciate the information I am getting here.
I hope my newer videos can also help you. Have fun!
I love all if your tips. I have your favorite backpack on my list for Christmas this year.
Merry Christmas!!
If I have space, I love to pack one of those small $1-3 thin fleece blankets. I use those for overseas trips since I know I’ll be on a few long flights and possibly some trains.
I pack a pashmina. Can use as a blanket when travelling, a scarf, picnic blanket etc.
Fleece is awesome and comes pretty thin sometimes. Thanks~
Agreed with everything 😂 My most recent trip I packed a few of these things and it was so unnecessary 🤦🏾♀️
I learn from my mistakes every flight still lol.
LOVE what you said about jewelry. I was looking at cases on Amazon just this morning and I’m so glad I decided not to get one. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! A viewer reminded me about the sunglasses container and prompted this whole video! Thanks.
One thing I used when we went on our Alaskan cruise with land tour was a plastic over the door shoe organizer. I didn't use it for shoes but for extra "counter/bathroom space". I set it up at the first hotel over the bathroom door and fill it with our deodorant, sun block, bug spray, toiletries, bacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, etc. As we moved hotels, I would just roll it up and stuff in suitcase. Next stop, I would unroll it again. It was fast and easy. I normally do what Laurie does and carry multiple little bags but for a trip where I'm transferring every other night, this made it really fast and simple to pack. It really came in handy on the cruise, definitely gave us more counter space and room in the shower. Another thing I travel with is head lamps. They are pretty compact and lightweight. If you've ever had to be evacuated when the lights aren't working, those are a Godsend for a small amount of real estate.
I agree that ziploc bags in all sizes including snack size are great for packing. I so carry a blanket. I found a very thin, lightweight one in an airport store that takes up less room than a sweater. I also saw some very compact Jersey blankets at Marshalls
Great idea!! I am so sorry I missed your comment.
I try to get everything in a carry on, even if I feel like checking it. I will put an empty lightweight backpack in, so if there are extras on the way home, we have a larger “personal item” bag. Also, I have a wonderful lightweight rain coat that has huge pockets in and out, which would fit pouches if I needed to stow extra stuff! Same with the running belt you showed.
Ooh, I need to remember that light weight rain coat.
Love the ironing board hack😯 genius . Thanks for sharing 😍
Thanks! A friend who has 3 daughters gave me this tip.
