    Using the neck pillow as packing space is friggin genius. As it’s not counted as carry on by airlines….yet. lol I also use my bumbag (fanny pack) while in airport and on plane (never as a tourist in a country though, screams “tourist, mug me!”) for anything I may need while flying so I don’t have to constantly get my carry on out and open. Plus it’s easy to hide behind you as you board! Just incase they’re super strict.

    As a business traveler (2-3 weeks at a time, suits etc). I really appreciate you suggesting under the seat for this kind of traveler. I always check in my suitcase and a small rucksack for laptop etc. if everyone travelled like you or like I do. There would be no fight for the overhead storage.

      Yes, everyone packing in this manner would reduce the fights about overhead bins, but why should everyone be forced to travel like this? They're cramming us in so tightly, now, that each passenger isn't even guaranteed a spot for a suitcase. It's ridiculous! We're paying a fortune. We deserve enough space for our shoulders, our legs, and a suitcase.

    I really appreciated this video. I've watched a lot of different ones gleaning any tips I can. We travel for 2-3 months at a time so laundry is a non-negotiable and no big deal. Also, having so many outfits is nice but unnecessary, imo. I guess it depends on what kind of trip. If you keep moving who are the multiple outfits for? Nobody but you and your husband (and probably not him, actually) will know how many times you've worn the same thing. ☺️
    Finally, you didn't include cables, adapters or anything to do with your tech.
    These are just my opinions as an early retired female, travelling as much as possible in this stage of life with husband who has helped me realize, nobody knows what I've worn 3 days ago.😊

    Thanks, Aly! You & your husband are adorable! ❤ I continue to challenge myself to pack carry-on only, now my second time completed. I used that neck pillow sleeve, on the way there, packing a L'Hamman Turkish towel & three pairs of 32° Cool Footie socks...on the way back, my Lunar Pooch windbreaker. A tip I used for the first time & maybe helpful to others: I packed both of mine, an ultra-absorbant hair towel (Aquis brand & other brand). They weigh next to nothing & take up so little space! Not only great to speed dry washed hair, also to absorb more water out of freshly handwashed items which means faster airdrying & rewearing. All equaling packing less without sacrificing style. I refuse to do that! 😁✈️🧳❤️💯 SAFE TRAVELS TO ALL!

    Great video. I live in Australia where we have a 7kg total bag weight limit. When I pack carryon only I pack the same way. You haven’t talked about all the other “stuff” we take. All the other stuff, including toiletries, need to be kept to a minimum otherwise there’s no way to meet this weight limit. I also take a small backpack and cross-body bag (which fits in the backpack if it needs to). Anyone who travels two or three months at a time knows that you have to do laundry. I love finding laundromats wherever we go and talking with tourists and locals while doing my laundry. Theres usually a bar nearby so you can sit and have a drink while waiting for your laundry. Happy packing and thanks again for a great video!

      I live in Australia too. And that 7kg limit (combined across all bags you carry on) is tough when you have a laptop that weighs 1.6Kg. (And, of course, the bag weight itself)
      How do you find packing to that weight limit?

    • @ellybea68
      @ellybea68 Před měsícem +2

      Just a tip for Aussies. If you fly internationally with one of the major airlines - we usually fly Emirates - they only weigh your carryon. They all allow another bag (it isn’t written anywhere in the carryon allowance guidelines but they let you bring it) and they don’t weigh it. I usually bring a small crossbody bag (passport, money, tissues and hand sanitizer) and a small backpack. The backpack holds my mini iPad, toiletries, makeup, electric toothbrush, batteries and charging cables and my headset (I’m quite deaf so I need large noise-cancelling headphones to hear the movies. This bag usually weighs 3-5 kgs but I do try to keep it to a minimum. I’ve never had this “other” bag weighed. Once I get to Europe it all fits in my carryon so I’m still only travelling with an international sized carryon with wheels and a small crossbody bag. I still have to decant toiletries etc and minimise everything I take with me, but it works for me. And the airlines accept it.

      I do a lot of laundry as I travel also. I pack the laundry detergent sheets which are as easy as a piece of paper to travel with and save me a lot of money over buying the single load size items at the laundry.

    • @olivemaycards
      @olivemaycards Před 28 dny +3

      I have no real issues with the clothes - it’s all the other stuff. Not just toiletries but chargers, accessories, sometimes gifts (both ways because we often travel to visit family), hobbies… Maybe I need to work on my fear of boredom! And yes, NZ/Aus airlines can be really strict about carry on weight limits.

    These are great ideas. I love the stuffable neck pillow. I sure wished I'd had a neck pillow on my last flight. My trusty carry-on bag that I've used for years was a problem on my latest flights, because although it's a regulation size and I packed it far below capacity, I had to literally pound it into the overhead bin because someone had sneaked a laptop in there that took up much needed space. Of four flights I took, they were ALL booked full. Each time, there wasn't enough bin space, and valuable time had to be taken for excess baggage to be checked. One thing that worked well for me in the past was to bring two medium sized, soft backpacks. One was my carry-on and one my personal bag. However, both of them fit under the seat in front of me, so there was no stressing about the overhead bins.

    • @jenkomusic9918
      @jenkomusic9918 Před měsícem

      Medical devices don’t count towards the limits. You can have it in it’s carry case and it’s not a problem. Unfortunately the backpack itself is considered too big for a personal item as it’s about 5cm too tall even for the larger limits (40cm) but I did see someone mention that they allowed it to Mexico

    My husband and I are older and retired but we spend half the year traveling. We do check in bags because no charge for 1 st class, but always took a bag with us with meds, jewelry and 1 set of clothing, and iPad and headset. It’s a problem to use overhead bins because of arthritis so I decided to use an underseat personal item. The point, of this long speech is if you are older, get one with 4 wheels. It’s way to heavy when my gate always seems to be the last one and two wheels is cumbersome 😊

    I once did over 2 weeks through France and Germany in a backpack slightly smaller than the one you have here, but then another time I needed a carry on for a week in England. What made the difference was the plans I had during that time and the weather. I definitely think people could condense more than they realize, but it won't always work, so it's good to have backup plans. But that empty neck pillow is a GENIUS find! That is something I will add to my travel accessories!

    Good job on the clothing combinations, I’ll need to use that this summer….
    I have used the neck pillow hack a few times. I used neck pillow from MUJI. This hack works best with light scarfs, packable light down jackets from Uniqlo or wind jacket. Try rolling wide and curving and stuffed like a long pillow filling into the neck pillow cover. It feels like a true neck pillow which I have used on the plane. Never fill the pillow with too many complicated pieces or anything visible under the security screen or else, they might need to ask u to open the pillow for inspection. When it’s too cold on the plane, take the thin down jacket out and keep my body warm.
    I also pack a slim empty thermos on the side of the backpack. Fill it up after security so that I have water anytime I want.
    Also, I did bring old undies, socks, toothbrush, worn out cosmetic brushes etc. and dispose of them at the end of the trip.
    About toiletries, I used couple of contact lenses storage cases to fill the numerous lotion, cleanser, cream, suntan lotion, mosquitoes repellent, toner and labeled them on the cover. These cases are supposed to hold contact lens solution and won’t spill! After the trip, easily washable and waste only a little residue.
    I do think that nowadays, we need an electronics packing cube to store adapters, cables, power banks, headphones, travel wall plug, etc.
    My objective is to pack light and efficient, not to aim at putting the bag to sacrifice any leg room though…. But if it ended up needed to be on the floor, I usually fold n pack a thin plastic bag which can wrap the whole backpack to be put on the filthy floor…. And can be dispose of after the flight.

    Thanks for the video - very helpful. I will be on a 9 day Alaska cruise in October only with carry-on. Empty neck pillow would be great, but it cannot be delivered to French-Polynesia. So, I will use a zip pillow cover to pack my thick jumper (hand-knitted from my granny) in, as I did several times before. So I have an additional personal pillow on long flights and it easily fits between handles of my carry-on. Never had problem with my personal pillow at boarding.
    Greetings from Moorea (sister island of Tahiti) in French-Polynesia 🌴 🏖 😎 🇵🇫 🇫🇷 🇪🇺

    I’ve been a minimalist traveller for years. I’m a tall guy, not a giant like your husband though. My last big trip was to Vietnam for three weeks. It was in February and I travelled from the south (hot and humid) to the north (cold and wet). I also used a domestic airline while there. I have a similar light weight carry on from Lowe Alpine which weighs in empty at around 1kg. It is minimalistic itself with just one large mesh pocket on the inside of the outside flap and a key pocket that is accessed from the top that is large enough and deep enough to hold a wallet, a passport and a phone. I was able to manage the three weeks by limiting my underwear and socks. I did a handwash every few days. Like you I chose things the I could combine or layer depending on the weather. I wore my hiking shoes and packed my regular ones. I had room for my tech gear too. I really enjoyed seeing your use of packing cubes - they are great. I saw your toiletry bag and just wondered how you get through airport security with that. In Europe, we are still limited to a one litre in a ziplock bag. The same applied in Vietnam. I use one for my liquids etc. and have another that can holder those items in their ziplock bag while by bus or rail.
    Thank you for your great video!

      I didn't demo my liquids in this video, but my liquids I pack in a ziploc to get through security, and then once I'm in destination I use the toiletry bag to stay organized. I made a separate video about how I pack my liquids here: czcams.com/video/gf7UzOXKw9E/video.htmlsi=6v05L-PVti_jco-p

    Last year I traveled with a similar backpack as a carry-on on Eurowings (size and weight limits are less than in US). It was heavy and quite uncomfortable to sit with it on trains. I am planning to take a smaller backpack from now on or just a regular carry-on with wheels along with a personal item. I’ve learned from the experience. Unless you have a lot of muscles and stamina of course.😅

      This will definitely work for men. The only time that I can't see it working for men, or women too, is if your are going to extremely cold climates where you need heavy, thick alpine type gear etc.

    Absolutely brilliant information. My wife and I, retired, sold our home last year. We’ve been traveling Europe and the Middle East for one year so far. Airlines now charge for carry on, and just increased those charges as well as charging for small items like Fanny packs. Your recommendations and packing ideas will go a long in our quest to pack efficiently to avoid excess airline fees. Thanks so much. You and your husband make a cute couple.

    For the record, I believe I can pull off this plan with my 17 X 13 X 7 inch two wheel bag, though probably with a bit fewer clothes than Aly. It's likewise front loading. Also the retractable handle disappears behind a zipped pocket. Two normal attached handles remain to convert it to a tote when desired.

    For me, if I’m flying a roller bag is a must (I don’t want to carry something heavy for long distances - especially if you have a plane change and have to go to the other dang side of the airport 😅). I loved your backpack though. I think I could do that. Thanks for sharing. Going to go check out other ideas on your channel. I’m going to Colorado in July to see Santana at Red Rock Amphitheater 🎉. I might try the backpack thing. I’m coming from Florida. I think if I packed very similar to you, it could work! BTW, I think the neck thing goes the other way around. LOL

    You mentioned you’re planning an upcoming video on doing laundry. I’m wondering If you’ve tried:
    (a) Soak (supposedly a no-rinse liquid soap) in a ziplock baggie
    and/or
    (b) Breezeo (or similar) dry laundry strips
    and if so your thought (I’ve seen each on other videos but haven’t tried either yet)

    Great video Aly! I have tried different small backpacks and haven't been that happy with any of them. I tend to over pack so I'm usually pulling a carry on on top of that! Since I usually fly stand by I rarely check a bag. I really like that Amazon backpack. Not sure why they list it as a Woman's pack though. Definitely going to order that slim packing cube also. What a great idea! OK it's too hard to choose just one combo. Here is my favorites from each section. #4, #7, #11, #13, #17, #22 & #25. Take Care!

    I travel personal item only with a backpack and a crossbody/fanny pack. As a medical student attending away rotations at hospitals, I manage to pack a few pairs of scrubs, 3 dress pants, a few business casual tops and sweaters, my white coat, a few casual outfits, a couple of pairs of shoes, and in the Winter, a packable down jacket and rain jacket. Oh! And my laptop and toiletries (although I do buy shower essentials at my destination). It's not light, but it gets me through the month. Only time my packing failed me was this past winter in Baltimore after the snow storm - I had to buy additional thermals after it hit.

    I noticed you wore a lot of bags as accessories. Where did you pack the bags?
    I actually do have a question about underwear. I wear a 40DD, usually with underwires. How would those fit in a system like this? You can't exactly roll them up without breaking or bending the wire and ruining the bra.

    If I get somewhere and need a piece of clothing, there is usually an M&H or local clothing shop where you can pick up a basic (black skirt, dress, shorts etc.) then leave it in the room when you check out if you don't want to bring it home with you.
