    I bought the jacket and pants to do the PA wilds BDR-x. This is my first set of expensive riding gear and I’m happy I went with MSR. Rode thru pouring down rain, wind, light snow, 25+mph crosswinds and didn’t get wet. There are a few quirks with the jacket, but don’t they all have them. The outside pockets are too high for ease of use and they only button close, so they aren’t waterproof obviously. Other than that, I stayed 100% dry.

    Nice review Ian. It would have been good to see the gear off of you showing the inside lining, pockets, etc. It would be cool if the water bladder pocket zipped off, not sure if it does or not. But having that option is nice. I had the integrated water bladder feature on another jacket once and it's nice.
    I ended up with a KLIM Carlsbad last year after buying and disliking an Aerostitch Darian jacket, now that's a boxy stiff feeling jacket that still didn't fit as well as the Carlsbad! If the MSR had been available then I'd have seriously considered it. IMO a big chunk of the price is "usually" attributed to the Gore-Tex lining on just about any product that has it, they must charge a fortune to the manufacturers. I do wish it was easier to find gear in stores to try on because it really does make a huge difference.
    Keep up the gear reviews, they are very welcome.

    Great review, I just became aware of MSR motorcycle clothing and immediately went to your site to see your review. I trust your reviews and opinion. I would really be interested in a review of the motorcycle "Airbag" clothing thing. I've been riding with a "HitAir" inflatable vest for years. It's gone off once, dismounting from my bike I was on the left footpeg - right leg high in the air to clear my topbag on dismount and boom - I'd forgotten to leave it in gear and the side stand folded. I went down hard on my left side onto concrete pavers. I felt NOTHING, my neck was Not wrenched (I'm 74 and no longer very flexible and MUCH easier to hurt) and my side was not sore. That vest fired and the protection was amazing - cost to reload it $25 Canadian for a new CO2 cartridge. There are a myriad of options on the market. When you're talking about CE level 2 versus 1, the airbag vest which goes over any of my gear and really minimally impedes airflow gives VERY impressive protection. It's a subject that is worth exploring as I value your opinion.

    I really appreciated this review. I also watched the Dork in the Road one. I have been shopping for a new water resistant/proof jacket and pants. I have KLIM and Olympia gear now. I like the KLIM gear and bang for your buck I like Olympia but it has not held up as well as the KLIM stuff. To be fair, I have been buying KLIM gear because I had a pro/ambassador deal with KLIM. I am a part time writer and many many riders (20K/story) see pictures of me in my articles often head to ankles in KLIM gear. KLIM pulled that deal this year I guess because I write for a print magazine and don’t spend a bunch of time pimping their stuff on social media. Which I will not do just to get discounts. This basically made purchasing their gear twice as expensive and I don’t think any jacket is worth 1.1K. So, I am going to give the MSR gear a try. Thanks!

  • @csposir
    @csposir Před rokem +9

    The jacket looks about 3” shorter in the front overall than what might be ideal in the size you chose, very evident in the placement of the “waist” location. The front pouch pockets openings are in turn much higher than convenient to easy access from the top. The impingement issue at the inside of the elbow is a complete deal breaker, that type of “minor” interference is an overwhelming PITA when on a multi day ride. Promising development value-wise but not quite “finished” in critical aspects that make long term ownership and extended use a pleasure.

    Thanks! Wow, 80 to 85 degrees before you switch over? For me, I make sure I wear mesh if the bulk of the day is over 74. It is quite remarkable how you can layer a mesh suit to suit even much colder and wet riding conditions when you have to and there is simply no way you can peel of a layer to an all season suit when the temperature rises. They could maybe also consider a long vent zipper under the armpit running down your side in future...

      I too have a well aged Aerostich Roadcrafter 1pc suit that has been a very robust rugged piece of gear. The instant I put it on I feel secure. My favorite feature of the Aerostich 1pc is the ease of getting on and off. I like to give my legs a good “stretch” when I am touring by getting off the bike and exploring on foot by either walking or hiking. I wear appropriate “street” clothes for the climate under the suit so that when I reach my destination I can quickly shed the suit put on the appropriate footwear and get to exploring off the bike. Two piece suits such as this MSR and others are of great quality and utility for their intended purpose but I find it just takes extra time to take the suit off and put it back on when getting on/off the bike. Love my Aerostich. They are twice the cost of the current sales price of the MSR though.

    I have a jacket from a manufacturer I won't mention (not a major) on which the velcro at the neck and wrists started failing less than a year into ownership. Now a pocket zipper has failed (3 years), so I'm shopping for a new winter jacket. I'll probably hold out until fall because I can switch to my summer jacket in a couple of months, but this will be high on my list. Good quality and low price seem like a winning combo. If I have one winter jacket that I wear almost daily from October to May, how many years should I expect it to last?

    I am reporting a change to this jacket. I got my jacket an hour ago, so its as new as it can get.
    at the 7 minute mark, the arm fit adjuster is now lowered and sits right at the zipper. Very easy to move the elbow now.

    I've had a Rev it Dominator suit and my now Klim Carlsbad suit. The Dominator was overkill. I like my Carlsbad much better, it's much lighter. Some super fabric would be nice to have on the Carlsbad. This MSR jacket looks the part, I just wonder about the stitching, longevity in use and wear. Not sure about the tailoring, looks a bit sloppy, and the rabbit pouch pocket in the back isn't something I've ever used on any jackets I've had and is bulky. The Event fabric does work at least as good as Gore-Tex Pro when I had my Mosko Basilisk jacket.

    Just bought a pair. Considering returning them without riding in them because of the gusseted fly. To take a pee one would have to undo the buckle, unzip the fly, then pull the pant down four to five inches to relieve yourself. Frankly, the function of the gusset escapes me. In rain it would collect water because the gusset forms a pocket inside the zipper. What was your experience with this feature?

    It was wise to mention to pay attention to whether a jacket comes with armor. I'm less picky about pants, as it's easy to burn a hole in 'em when you wreck. I will remain a Klim buyer for jackets, but not for gloves. Part of my loyalty to Klim has to do with the fact that I ride and camp in Idaho as much as I can! I guess Utah has Rocky Mountain, and I do love Utah as well.

    Not as boxy as the Klim is a good start, but it still looks pretty big. In my limited experience, Revit gear fits slimmer builds OK, but doesn't come in tall sizes across the board. (And their sizing is odd and inconsistent sometimes too. I have some pant from them that my legs barely fit into, and I have *skinny* legs.) These guys could lock up an entire market segment if they offered a slim or just tall size. There's almost nothing else out there. Edit: revisiting the site, it looks like there *is* a tall size in the pants -- didn't show when I checked the first couple times. Tall jacket would also be nice although the sleeves look fairly long on you, so maybe they'd fit those of us with spidermonkey arms.

    The Scorpion Yosemite looks pretty swank - have you tested it?. regarding MSR: I wonder about using the superfabric but then putting vulnerable seams on the shoulders. I agree, level 1 stuff is a cop out. Level two does not have to be bulkier, and if you're going to do it, do it right, or sell without armor for cheaper and let people get their own.
    As for chest protector: I have a 1 piece that I put some velcro on, and every jacket I get, I shoe goo a little velcro inside to hold the armor. Works fine.

    • @hamerplayer1229
      @hamerplayer1229 Před 7 měsíci

      I own the Scorpion Yosemite jacket and it is a great jacket. The main downside to the Yosemite is that if you want it to be waterproof you have to wear the inner liner. I have been riding mine hard for two years and multiple thousands of miles and the Yellow is still as bright as day one and there is no wear at all. It is comfortable , has lots of pockets and ventilation The fit is more euro and I would size up. For $400 retail I would probably go for the MSR but I picked mine up never used for $200 and for that it was a bargain. During the summer I take out the factory level 2 armor and put it over a Forcefield EX-K flight harness with the arm protectors. I did crash once hard in a rock garden in the jacket while I was running the level 2 armor and took a hard hit to my shoulder but it protected me and although I was sore as hell for two weeks nothing was broken (can't say that about the bike). Also the jacket was unmarked from the impact. It was after that incident that the Forcefield EX-K Flight Vest was purchased to give me even greater protection. I even ride my quad in the winter in the Yosemite with all the layers in it with the factory level 2 armor and a heated jacket underneath. I am going to wait for the second generation of the MSR and hopefully they offer high vis yellow as it is a lifesaver on the road. I would remove the level one armor and run it over my Forcefield EK-X Flight Harness for maximum protection.
