Another option for new riders is to check used gear out on ADV rider. A better quality used jacket and pants (Klim, Aerostitch, Motoport etc) are way safer then new cheap gear made out of polyester (which is what most sub $400 gear is made of). Definitely want a new helmet though.

I ride a lot like you do. Just got into totally riding off road again with KLR. Love the bike to the moon. Owned a 2017 and rode to the Ozarks the first spring. A totally rainy mess and mud was so much fun. Just wearing cheap cheap gear like jeans and a slicker suit. What's a great rain gear with great protection

I would like to add that if you are not an ADV rider and follow slabs like me on a touring or cruiser bike (and you don't have to "look the part") This ADV gear works great on the road and will give you what you need along with some versatility, like better ventilation and the ability to go waterproof. I am giving the HWK gear a run, it gets decent reviews from other full time riders both ADV and Slab. It is also armored and VERY affordable. I am into the pants and jacket for about $150. The caveat is that I do not expect this to last for years and years although I hope it does lol. This will extend my riding time for rain or shine 3 seasons here in the PNW.

Just bought my first bike..2013 honda crf 260L...1500 bucks..i appreciate this channel..im learning alot..im in vancouver washington and am down for a group ride...
Motonation offers jacket and pants at a fraction of the price of more popular brands. I have the Pursang 3/4 length touring jacket ($179) with CE rated elbow and shoulder pads, and full length back pad upgraded to a Forcefield Pro Lite K Level 2 Back Insert ($79), and the Phantom pants ($129) with CE hip and knee pads. The pairing is all weather gear and come with great venting, a rain membrane and a thermal third layer. Both are 600 denier textiles with decent abrasion resistance and really well made. GREAT VALUE!
I have the Same helmet, prior to endorsements of Dork, and I love that helmet. I also have the Shoei and love it too, but for highway use. My jacket is the ARC Battleborn v1. It cost me about $250 for this three season suit, and since I don't have warm summers....it makes for a perfect suit year round. (no snow)

I used my Troy Lee Designs skid pants and crash shirt. Supposed to be for mountain biking, but work good. I use my hard POC elbow and knee pads and softer (D30) G-form pads. Again, MTB but work great. Did get a new HJC modular and Klim gloves. Using the hard BMX shin pads (Shadow Conspiracy) and waterproof Harley boots until I budget in some good MX boots. Keep the pads in a waterproof pack on my KLR, so if I’m fixin to turn off a fire road onto a harder trail, I can just slip it all on and go. I’ll get some Klim pants snd jacket eventually. For now, my Harley rain gear or a leather shirt and a pair of ACU pants or Carharty jeans has to do. Kilm Dakar gloves for hot and Nobu armored gloves for cooler temps. Mix together and ride!
I just shop really hard and find gear on sale, usually for at least 50% off. A lot of types of Cortech gloves were recently on extreme sale and I bought three different pairs, each for about $12.00 and all originally $40.00-$70.00. A couple years ago I bought a Fieldsheer jacket that originally sold for $285.00, for $65.00 as used like new on Amazon. It still had all the tags on it. I bought two new jackets this year, both at about 50%-60% off, a Cortech for summer wear and a Motonation for winter. There are plenty of deals out there on new gear if you are patient. Cortech and Tourmaster (same company) can often be found a big discounts.
Your mention of the Alpinestars Corozal boot reminded me that I wanted to try out the Alpinestar Belize boots. They are the same boot, but end at the calf to allow a little more ease to walking. I can say that the Olympia Air Glide 5 jacket is great in all weather and all conditions, and it has spine protection included with the forearm/elbow and shoulder protection. It's a multi season jacket with mesh for summer, insulation for winter-ish, and a rain liner that can either zip in to the mesh jacket, be worn over the jacket, or be worn on its own. I've tumbled in the dirt many times with it on and came out unscathed. As for boots, I've only been wearing the Alpinestars SMX-1 R vented boot/shoe, but they've provided a surprising amount of protection so far. Ventilation is great, but rain will come right on in
I've heard great things about the Belize.
Throw away the liner on the mesh jacket and use a breathable shell over it. The mesh creates air pocket for insulation. I use this to set up 4 seasons. I have tried all the setups and this is the warmest combo. I probably will never have an armored shell again. I love my Joe rocket pants and I do use the inner liner on those with Bonn underneath. Astars SMX gloves are excellent gloves for dual use.
I'll also argue that the best helmet is one that fits your headshape. I had the bell mx9 adventure with nips (also had an $800 bell star carbon so it wasn't a money factor). It didn’t fit my head shape well and after an hour or two it gave me a headache. I stick with fly's higher end helmets with mips. It just fits my headshape better. After crashing in a Vega and getting a concussion (and what would have likely broken my jaw or at least smashed my teeth in I'll always wear a helmet. But you have to factor in headshape. I'm a fathead and 6D doesn't make a helmet big enough for me.

Seems like you get a lot for your money with those. I just worry about quality but I've been pleased with most of my Cycle Gear stuff so far.

My scorpion Yuma is great...wish the main zipper would have lasted. No jackets are priced that cheap....the Yuma pants were also very excellent...wish I would have bought multiple pairs of those adv pants.
I'm just wearing my street motorcycle gear!....I've got SO much gear from riding sport bikes over 10+ years....I just cannot justify buying Off-road stuff at the moment. LOL Buying a new DRZ, skidplates, tires, etc has bankrupt me, haha.
FYI, the REV'IT Sand 3 has been replaced with the Sand 4, BUT the 3 were popular enough that they kept alive and dubbed the REV'IT Dune. I just bought some.

I have to admit I haven't watched all your videos yet, but could you cover your experience about riding with glasses? I've noticed you had goggles on the helmet. Do you ride with contact lenses, spare glasses and do you chose helmet on how it fits and works with glasses?

I have been riding more and more dirt fire roads but I would not call them trails. Either way, thinking I need more then the hiking boots I am wearing.

It’s a shame that Rocky Mountain no longer offers the battle born line of jackets. They were cheap but well-made. Four years ago I bought a jacket and matching pants for $400 on sale at Rocky Mountain and to this day they are some of my best riding gear for spring fall and winter

I like using motorcyclegear.com simply because they're local to me, but revzilla, chapmoto.com, and rocky mountain are my go to.

Couple questions. I know I am posting this a long time after you posted. I tried on the MX-9 helmet and I could not get my glasses on. The temples would not slide to my ears. I do not have that problem with the XD4 or Hornet. Question - You wear glasses. What do you do to get your glasses on wearing the MX-9. Next Question. Can you comment on the toe box width of the 2 boots you recommend. I have very wide feet. Thanks for the great videos!
He stated in the comments - he wears contact lenses as for you foot width, you would be best getting fitted at a MX store.

I upgraded to an Africa Twin for more off road capability.
I test rode the FJ-09 when I was shopping for the Versys, but the Tracer wasn't out yet. Tracer is a sweet bike if you're planning on a lot of road miles and not much off road.

Why would you recomend a water proof liner instead of a jacket? It's a huge PITA to start fiddling with a liner in the rain?

for beginner , not sure the dirtbike boot are the best,, im beginner , i have dirtbike boot and i never use because i dont feel the gear , instead i use hiking boot, because now i have no more money for other kind of boot,, so i think forma adventure or klim outlander will be a better choice untill you know better what kind of ride you do the most,, and untill you get a better experience of riding.. if you have kneed brace you protect you tibia too anyway,, so,,
the most important is avoid riding mistake.. so,, if having dirtbike boot make you made mistake, like looking if your feet are on the gear or not, your not more safe at the end,,
I tried the Alpine jacket on last month. It fits a size smaller than whatever it says. Of course then I accidentally put on a Klim jacket. I think I have a hard time parting with the money.
Yeah sizing is super weird. I'm in a 3xl in the Alpinestars jacket but an XL or 2XL in anything else.
I'm a 3x in most stuff, but shrinking. The 3x didn't do it for me. I'm thinking about the icon AF mesh. Like your video said, I can layer up, but not down on a thick jacket.

Dork in the Road cool, thanks! I’ve been using some old ski goggles so far. They work ok, but the band isn’t nearly long enough and the foam surround to keep the dust out is completely gone. I’ll check those out next time I’m at the store.

Appreciate ya brother, but your boot choices are off. Neither of those options have the rigid plastic structures of a proper MX boot. Might seem like stiff leather is enough, but drop a few hundred pounds on em at a 45 deg angle and see how they hold up.
They did well enough when I dropped my Africa Twin on my ankle
