bella should have gotten some sort of award for this performance alone! but i see more awards in the future anyway. just pure talent. my favorite episode acting and pace wise.

Ya it really lulls you in the beginning with its slow pace and then in an instant it becomes so dangerous. In my uncut reaction I mention it reminds me of that scene in Spider-Man Homecoming where Vulture has that talk with Peter in that car, the uneasiness of you realizing what was happening a moment before the character does...It deserved all the awards!

Interestingly Ellie killed "Joel" in this episode. James is played by Troy Baker who did the motion capture and the voice acting for Joel in the games.

Ya I JUST realized that with another comment above! I KNEW he looked and sounded familiar! (and spoiler, I DO recognize the cameo from next episode! lol)

Bella did such a ridiciously good job in that last scene!
Also the actor that played David was very good at portraying a creepy character.

100% agreed! And he did such a good job of being introduced like a loving pastor, only to then have whats underneath that mask exposed, brilliant job by the actor and the director for how they revealed it!

6:40 Alec is indeed missing! 8:57 the entire Ellie riding the horse and leading them away was indeed in the game! They only skipped one part where David and Ellie got swarmed by infected while waiting with the deer for buddy boy to come back.

Damn, I really need to go back and replay it (but I'll wait until the remastered version drops on PS+ lol) I wish they would've kept the infected in, as the series doesn't show them much, but its not really about them for this story, and I get that

Ya, this was the episode that Bella got the Emmy nomination for. It was a pretty faithful adaption, minus a bunch of shootout scenes, running and gunning stuff. David in the game was hinted at being that kind of creepy, but in the show the character was very explicitly that kind of creep.
Amazing how close to the game the steakhouse in the show looks, but that's a real steakhouse at the resort town where they shot this episode (Waterton Park, south end of the province). And the fire in the restaurant was real. Apparently Craig was initially told that he could have a small bit 'on fire', but the pyro/safety something guy said nah, I can give you like 20-30% of it on fire for real, totally safe. Looked amazing, and at least for me, I felt exactly the same as in that scene in the game.
The exterior stuff on the streets apparently they had to truck in snow from outside the park (couldn't use snow-making machines for some reason), took a week and they had to hand-shovel everything into place and make it look realistic. And then it snowed all night right before they started filming.
Those scenes of Ellie hunting outside and it looking cold were legitimately cold. Shot in winter here, Bella said the scene where she finds David and James was the coldest day of filming (-18C), so her slight slurring of words was real (and made her self-conscious). Also in that scene was one of my favourite bits of trivia, the rifle Ellie is holding is the real one, not the prop gun. Craig thought that it looked better with Bella holding a rifle that's too big and too heavy for her. Craig was just off-screen there repeatedly telling Bella to lift the rifle back up (if you rewatch, she drops the weight of the rifle a few times).
They shot the 'reunion' scene before the 'killing David' scene, but Craig wanted Bella to be in the right headspace, so she and a stuntman were in the restaurant wrestling, him throwing her around a bit, just before she walks out the door to film her stuff with Pedro. Apparently Bella loved it (forgot to mention in ep 5 Bella said she got a black eye from on of the stunt-infected when she stabbed them in the neck and a hand flailed out and hit her face, she thought it was fun lol).
As for the 'killing David' scene, Craig gave her some kind of padded foam thing to hack into, and filled it with fake blood so the blood spatter on the lens is 'real'. Bella and Ashley both have commented on that killing scene, that the hacking was more than a defensive kill. Bella talked about how David was likely dead after the 3rd or 4th strike, but Ellie keeps going. In fact, according to both, there's a part of Ellie that ENJOYED that level of violence, outside of the need for it (go back and rewatch Ellie's reaction to Joel killing the guard at the end of ep 1). According to Bella, in that moment Ellie realized that violent part of her was real and the fact that she liked doing it, and that almost scares her more than anything else.

I just can't believe I forgot about this part of the game...for how intense it is I really don't remember that in the game! lol And its a shame Bella didn't win for it.
1, how lucky did they get it resembled the steakhouse in the game and 2 how the hell did they get permission to light an active restaurant on fire!? lol
ahhhh I would be SO pissed if I was on shovel duty only for it to actually snow! But then again, it probably made it look more realistic after fresh snow fell, so I'm sure they weren't too upset haha
Oh I could tell by her cheeks that it was freezing! haha It really did add to the scene because she's hungry, worried for Joel and freezing, only to come across potential danger, their interactions felt more stiff than normal, which makes sense being how cold it was. And that rifle really did make Ellie look so small haha
See THAT'S what I love about film making! You can tell when they run into scene and are huffing and puffing to give the illusion of them being out of breath, but you can always tell, actually doing a scene, off camera before your cue makes it all the more real and visceral and her still being in that fight or flight made that ending so much more impactful!
Ha! I'm surprised there wasn't more injuries, it looks like it'd be impossible to see out of those masks and prosthetics!
Ohhhh ya. My reaction was obviously longer in the patron cut, but I'm like rockin my head to her blows like yea yea get him...oh...ok...ok he's dead...Ellie enough! hahaha Her adrenaline and self preservation instincts just overtook her and she wanted to make him hamburger lol But I LOVE that bit of trivia! So that's how they made it seem so violent and bloody...she was ACTUALLY slashing at a bleeding thing...whoever thought of that should be given an award for prop design cause that worked PERFECTLY! I hope/suspect we'll see more of that in season 2.

So it IS in the game! HOW did I forget this!?
I had to look up troy last of us and that was Joel!? I KNEW he looked and sounded familiar!!!
And ya, that part crushed me. That was when they accepted each other in their lives. Beautiful ending for such a violent episode!
