My late father-in-law was a waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator. After the war he came home to his wife. He went to work for General Electric. Ann had trouble getting pregnant and had a miscarriage so they adopted a brother and sister, my wife. Soon after the adoption Ann got pregnant and had a girl. My wife says she always felt like she was Jim and Ann's daughter. She is very close to her sister. Jim became a lay preacher. He never showed signs of PTSD except for nightmares which diminished with time. All this according to Ann. Jim's 2 tragedies in life were losing his teenage son in a car accident and Ann's death a year and a half before Jim passed away. Jim's older brother Sam, was in the infantry and he too came home to a job and a family. The men that fought in Europe, Asia, Italy, and the Pacific were all citizen soldiers. We should honor them right along with all those who risked their lives for their buddies and our freedom.

My grandfather was top-turret gunner on a B-24 and flew in the 450th BG of the 15th Air Force stationed in Manduria, Italy. This series inspired me to do video interviews with him about his experiences...we got as far as his childhood and basic training on the time line, but once we got to his talking about being sent to Italy he said, "Link, I think that this is all we need to talk about" and we ended those interviews. I'll never forget him telling me, "I don't know why I should be allowed to tell my stories, I'm not a hero...the real heroes are those that never came home and never got the chance to tell their stories." My grandfather had a rough time after the war and actually got kicked out of his hometown of Brady, TX by the sherrif once for getting into fights after he returned. He had nightmares and vivid dreams until his death at 87 yo, and the family would joke about how "he's such a vivid dreamer!" We didn't know about PTSD then, and could not understand or appreciate that at the time. Thank you for sharing about your father-in-law, and you are right that we should honor them.

@@linkblevins3558 Such a sad story. Only people who lived the experience of being in one of those bombers can know the horrors they experience. My father-in-law never talked to me or anyone else, except maybe Ann, his wife about his war experience. He enlisted right after Pearl Harbor and stayed on as a gunner right up to the end of the war. The only thing he ever said to me about the war was, "Thank God you never have to see what a 20mm cannon from a Bf 109 can do to a man." Jim went through the war without a scratch but he must have seen friends in other planes go down. He also saw fellow crew members get killed or injured; according to what Ann told me. He did suffer from recurring nightmares, but those diminished with time. Ann said Jim signed up for another tour after he completed the required missions. She said Jim wanted to see the war to its end. He would have gone to the Pacific but Japan surrendered before he was shipped out. Other than the dreams he suffered no ill effects from the war. My guess is he turned to God and the Bible. He studied the scriptures and prayed every day of his life. Ann once told me that he came home a different man, but different in a good way. I'm not sure what she meant but the Jim I knew was kind and very considerate of others while at the same time being a man's man. He really was a good guy and everyone who knew him misses him.

Easy Company is the most ironic name in military history. From D-DAY all the way to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, there was nothing Easy about it. I never want things I love to end, but you want the pain to end for these Men, and the peace to begin. The German Field Marshall's speech is actually what ties the entire concept of of the series together unexpectedly. I implore you to see "We Stand Alone Together" and Ron Livingston's (Nixon) Bootcamp Diary. It makes you appreciate the series even more unbelievably. For context of this story you must see "The Fallen of World War 2" All on CZcams. "Were you a hero in the War Grandpa? Grandpa says no, but I served in a company of heroes" Near tears every time. Thank you for taking this journey. Currahee! ♠

I love the scene with Spiers where you can see how he has switched out of ruthless killer mode now that the War is essentially over and he cant bring himself to shoot a man who clearly deserves to be shot ... he looks down at his own hand confusedly realising things have changed. These people were transitioning from War mode to what comes after and for many it is clearly very difficult. That and the scene with the German General adressing his men are brillaint at showing the humanity behind the uniforms.

Speirs said he was going to shoot the guy as he'd never had an issue with situations where summary action was needed. He said the reason he thinks he didn't shoot him is because there may have been just a little bit of doubt in his mind that wasn't the right guy.

@@patrose7742 yeah I get that but even the fact there was doubt was new for him. You can see in the scene as it is played that none of them are 100% what to do and that is very different to the past, I think its wonderfully done as it shows how they have started to shift from war mode to something new

Great reaction. That last thing Winters says is him quoting a letter he received from a fellow veteran (he says “the letter from Mike Ranney”). Ranney was among the sargeants in episode 1 who protested Winters’ court-martial. He’s the one who got busted down (demoted) to Private. He eventually got back to his former rank and served in Easy again. They remained friends like so many of them. Ranney was talking about his own grandson, and Winters shares the story because of its beautiful sentiment.

Grant suffered from neurological issues the rest of his life. He ran a tobacco shop in the San Fransisco area.
Liebgott fell off the grid for a few years after the war. He wan't a cab driver; he actually became a barber in the Central Valley of California. He never spoke of his war experiences. After his death, his children found out about his war service from the Ambrose book & BoB series. They contacted Guarnere & attended several reunions.
Sobel died of malnutrition in a VA hospital after being blinded in a failed suicide attempt. His family did not agree with the way he was portrayed in the series.

The book paints a more even picture of Sobel even thought there were elements in the series that were spot on. Ambrose said he asked every man he interviewed for the book if Easy became what it did because of, or in spite of, Sobel. He said every man that didn't answer, "Both", would look him right in the eyes and say, "Herbert Sobel MADE Easy Company!"

The greatest ending to any show, ever. That last scene, and the revealing of who's who never fails to make my eyes fill up. There are two other scenes that get me; the speech from the German general, and also the bit when Malarkey is with all his pals in the back of the truck waving to the girls, the sheer joy in his voice when he says 'the war is over!'. Gets me every time.

Marley, be advised as tough as BoB has been The Pacific is on another level due to the enemy faced. It is harder for me to watch. As a Navy Corpsman myself, I am also the Grandson of a WWII US Navy Seabee, he fought along side Marines for most of the battles shown.
BoB was filmed on location in many of the actual buildings.
    They are all gone now.
    For the Fallen-
Stand down now good and faithful servants. Your long watch is over. We have the Conn now. Go rest high on that mountain brothers. Be at ease, Rest in Honored Peace. Go forth and war no more. God's Speed and God bless. Prayers for your families and friends. Prayers for those still on watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas Brothers
All Hands render Honors as the 24 Hallowed notes sound.
And one more time this old Doc whispers,
    Semper Fi........

Spandau Prison is the prison facility where most of the Nazi leaders, and financiers who were not given the death penalty were sent to serve their sentences for their war crimes of WWII, a lot of them recieved life sentences, many of them got anywhere from 10 to 40 years depending on how bad their crimes were, but until the last war criminal passed away, Britian, France, and the U.S. maintained a security force at the prison, once the last one that was given a life sentence passed away, that wing of the prison was handed back over to the German Government and the last allied forces left, their job was completed, Spandau is now a regular German civilian prison and no longer shares jurisdiction with military forces.

Unfortunately, all the men of Easy Co. have now passed away. The last one was Bradford Freeman, who died 3 July 2022. He was not featured in the series. The last officer to pass away was Lt. Ed Shames, who died 3 December 2021. He did appear briefly in the series and was the guy who Winters said always feels like he needs to shout all the time, while he was discussing with Nixon who he'd like to lead Easy / who to send home when Nixon was originally chosen. This was in episode 7, "The Breaking Point".

  • @eschiedler
    @eschiedler Před 4 měsíci +2

No spoilers on "The Pacific" it was funded because of the commercial success of "Band of Brothers" and it is highly historically accurate with a huge, record production budget for a TV series. However, it is far different in tone because it was a different war even though it was concurrent with the one in Europe. Don't expect it to be a copy/paste of "Band of Brothers."

Floyd Craver was the name of the I Company replacement who shot Staff Sergeant Charles Grant in the head. He received a dishonourable discharge and a life sentence (which was later rescinded) for his actions. That being two counts of murder (Hauptmann Edward Altacher of the Wehrmacht and Major R.G. Watkin of British Intelligence), one count of attempted murder (the aforementioned Sergeant Grant) plus one count of desertion when he attempted to escape incarceration prior to his court martial.
There were allegations that Craver had attempted to assault an Austrian woman, but they were never brought to light during his trial. But as mentioned before, his life sentence was rescinded as he died in July of '87, apparently as the result of a head on collision with a truck, riding on his motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. Three years earlier Charles Grant had passed away.

If you're like me you probably figured out which old man Winters was without having to see his name at the end, they pretty much gave that away during the pre-episode interviews. The other one that was easy to identify without having to see his name was Bill Guarnere, not because of pre-interview details but because of the actor they chose to play him:)

In addition to the documentary already suggested, there is a “video diary” made by Ron Livingston (Lewis) about the boot camp training period for most of the main cast. Not only does it show them learning military information, it also shows them bonding together as a cast. It is both humorous and emotionally powerful.

Hi Marley , great job reacting to a great series. My uncle died at Battle of Bulge so even though it was long before I was born it still moves me to see others moved by a shared experience. Most of my ancestors came from England , Ireland & Wales so who knows maybe we r related somewhere back in time. One of my ancestors was 1 of the original pilgrims from England that landed on Plymouth Rock and now I myself live in Plymouth Michigan. Well anyways UK & US r also brothers forever. Never join the modern choras of people trying to blame all the worlds faults on England as England built the framework of the modern world where we can share youtube videos about real history and entertainment !.....1 last thought " Hacksaw Ridge" would be another great true story movie to react to. Well cheers to you if I am using that phrase correctly ? see you at next reaction !!😊

The points system was thought up when the war in Europe was over and the US didn't have the logistics to 1) ship part of the men and material home 2) keep supplying the personel in charge of de-Nazification in Europe 3) shipping part of it all to the Pacific and 4) having to keep supplying the ongoing war against Japan there. All at the same time.

Thanks for your support Ray I really appreciate it, my Patreon was planned to be up and running but I haven’t had chance to come up with extra material yet. I will be definitely adding to it as soon as possible though, when I do I will post about it in the community tab here on CZcams.
Thank you for your recommendations, I am a huge Game Of Thrones fan and already watched it all & House of the Dragon (I’ve read the first 2 books too) - I most definitely will react to the second season of House of the Dragon and possibly do a recap reaction for season 1.
The Pacific & Masters of the Air are coming up soon! As is Interstellar which I’m currently editing! ☺️

Yes unfortunately this did happen, After Sergeant Grant was shot, and Speirs ordered 1st Sergeant Talbert to find the shooter, Easy company did in fact find him, and beat the hell out of him, When Sergeants Malarkey and "BULL" Randelman found him, he was raping a young Austrian girl, it was also discovered that BEFORE he shot and killed the British Major and German Captain at the checkpoint where he shot Sergeant Grant, he had already shot and killed 3 other Allied members at another checkpoint, 1 British Captain, 1 American Leiutenant, and 1 Canadian Sergeant, after Captain Speirs told Easy Company to turn him over to the MP's, he was transported back to Leavenworth Kansas till he stood his Court Martial in 1946, he was found guilty of 5 counts of Murder, 1 count of attempted murder, 1 count of rape, and was hanged in Leavenworth in 1947, Sergeant Grant did recover from his head wound, but never regained any of his memories from before the night he was shot, he passed away in his home in 1976, the cause of his death was never released.

Can I ask you to please consider watching The Last Kingdom it has five seasons of great story telling and amazing characters all topped off with a movie to finish the story. It is a popular show so I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy watching your reactions to it.
I just heard the list of shows you already have lined up so I understand you won't have any space right now for a five season journey but please consider doing it in the future as I am sure you would love the show & the many great characters within it.

It is hard to believe this series is over 20 years old and it looks like it was made yesterday.
Marley did you notice all the young actors that were unknown at the time and now familiar?
