Give Me an Answer - What is the Basis for Human Value?

  • Program 0223 ................... - Human Value - Order and Design - Materialism ..............
    Recorded at Texas State University - October 2022.
    The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

    What is the basis for human value.?
    Cliffe Says -
    We get our basis for human value from god.
    My Response -
    Where do we get the notion that god is the direct source, that gives us the basis, for human value.?
    We don't cause god does not exist in order for us to inquire of him.
    Do we get this notion from how Christianity has valued human life throughout its history.? Certainly not. The tree is known by its fruit.
    We get these notions of human value from different sources.
    1) Individual value of one's self comes from the individual.
    2) Individual value of another person comes from the individual himself.
    3) The town or city one lives in determines the value of its citizens. One town might value its citizens more then the neighboring town or city.
    4) The state one lives in determines the value of its citizens. One state might value its citizens more then another state does.
    5) The nation or country one lives in determines the value it holds for its citizens. One country might value its citizens more then another country.
    If you want to find out what society values its citizens, more then another society, look at how that society treats its homeless population.
    God is not the basis of anything, he is not in charge of anything. Man is in charge of everything while he lives in a material world. Man is the epitome of everything that is material in a material world. If we are to end hunger around the world it will be done due to man's actions.

    • @bigcountrymountainman9740
      @bigcountrymountainman9740 Před rokem +4

      For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
      For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
      The first time I ever read that verse, verse thirteen, for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, it absolutely almost crushed my face. I thought I had found a contradiction in the scriptures.
      Jesus said in Matthew chapter 7 when talking to followers and believers, I repeat, he is talking to followers and believers. People that have heard him preach, teach, perform miracles etc.
      In Matthew chapter 7 Jesus says verily verily I say unto you not all that saying to me Lord Lord shall be saved. In other words instead of saying for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, he is saying not all that call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. When I saw this I was devastated. Then, as I read on through the chapter I realized who Jesus was talking about. Jesus says if you love me you will keep my commandments and those of you that keep not my commandments are condemned already.
      I kept thinking to myself, why would Jesus say there's two followers and believers? Over and over and over again I had this thought.
      Then it reads on and says for there shall Be no thieves, liars, drunkards, whores, whoremongers, fornicators, adulterers, murderers, those the defile themselves before mankind, AKA homosexuals, the effeminate, AKA transgenders, killers of the Innocent, cowards nor the fearful shall inherit the Kingdom of heaven. Again, I couldn't understand why Jesus would say this to followers and believers.
      What does Paul say about the Church of Corinth in 1st Corinthians when he finds out that there is people in the church sleeping with
      Mother's? He condemned them and said not even with gentiles do these things.
      Then I remembered the verse if you love me you will keep my commandments and those of you that keep not my commandments shall not inherit the Kingdom of heaven.
      Jesus isn't saying you have to do works to attain salvation. Jesus is saying if you have the ability to continually be a liar thief whoremonger fornicator adulterer murderer coward fearful etc you will not inherit the Kingdom of heaven because if you can continually do these things and keep not his commandments you are condemned already because you are not born again.
      All of us are sinners, but a person that's born again is being sanctified and sins less and less and less as time goes by because you start to love what God loves and hate what God hates. You cannot be a sinning Christian. Well, you cannot be a Christian that purposefully and willfully commit sin all the time because the Holy Spirit Will convict your heart and if he doesn't convict your heart and bring you to anguish and give you contrition, then you are not born again.
      I don't know why I felt the need to text this to you, but I just did. God bless you Larz.
      I pray that the Lord lead and guide your footsteps in the way that they should go.

      @@Theo_Skeptomai The rhetorical question you're asking is an appeal to emotion, which would be a logical fallacy. Also, saying that you cannot comprehend what Scot Jek is saying would be an argument from incredulity, which is another logical fallacy.
      This also undermines Red Bones point, because while he's willing to say that he does not accept things that are not intellectual because they are "cultish", he's siding with your position which is using logical fallacies to support itself, and this undermines his position.
      This would make Scot Jek's point intellectual, and all other points opposing his "rhetoric", and to use rhetoric in response would be to lower the standard of evidence, which undermines the notion that a person's position is ultimately evidence-based. It is based on bias, and therefore in its own way, is religious.

    • @Bi0Dr01d
      @Bi0Dr01d Před rokem +2

      There would also be an element of immorality in the comments which oppose Scot Jek's comment, because the rhetorical question which appeals to emotion obscures the logical implication (and therefore becomes an obstruction against truth), resulting in a misleading conclusion, and rhetoric in response which lowers the standard of evidence attempts to paint a picture in the mind of observers that would be reading these comments to assume a misleading conclusion that Jek's comment is non-intellectual while the unbelieving comments are intellectual when it is the other way around. It's to influence a mindset to be dismissive without thinking the issue through, which is the direct opposite of being "evidence-based".
      Thus, not only are the two comments in response factually misleading, but they seem to have an element of immorality. They are willful deceptions, and they are self-deceiving deceptions as well.

    • @redbones6046
      @redbones6046 Před rokem

      @@Bi0Dr01d Theo just said (paraphrasing) "life still has value whether God is real or not", how exactly is that rhetoric or deception?
      Also, I believe God exists, what I take issue with is people like you who say "life is only meaningful if God, and anyone who says otherwise is delusional/a liar/an agent of the devil/etc" your own comment a) didn't offer any evidence either, which makes you a hypocrite b) gaslights theo by questioning their own value that they place on their reality c) itself uses the logical fallacy of appealing to authority bc you claim that anything said in opposition to your worldview is "non-evidence based rhetoric "
      Also I should clarify I see bullies like Cliffe -and apparently you- who can't handle being disagreed with- as cultists. I don't see all Christians in that same light bc most Christians have enough basic cognition to understand how people can understand the world without God, which was the only point Theo appeared to be trying to make

    • @Bi0Dr01d
      @Bi0Dr01d Před rokem +1

      @@redbones6046 To say that value still exists without God is a misleading conclusion, because Theo is appealing to emotion, while Scot is appealing to intellectual consistency, making Theo intellectually consistent. It is a willful ignorance that Theo is communicating. It is therefore immoral, because it is a self-deception and shifts the focus into an improper way of observing the conclusion in order to not acknowledge the conclusion.
      My comment does not need to offer evidence of the value of a person being factually true through God because the video above argues this, and it is therefore up to Theo to present counter arguments, not for me to present further argumentation. The evidence that my comment offers are the arguments that point out that the conclusion Theo is making is misleading, dismissive, or willfully "ignorant" (Not stupid, but willful "overlooking").
      To call this "gaslighting" is itself gaslighting. Gaslighting is to cause a person to question his own sanity, but in order for it to be truly gaslighting, the conclusion must lead a person to untruth. However, what I'm saying is trying to point him to what is most accurate. However, to reject what I'm trying to communicate by appealing to emotion and saying that I'm gas-lighting Theo is itself a comment to gaslight me.
      It's not a logical of fallacy of appealing to authority, it logically follows. Just as the video says above, value is connected to purpose. Although a person can invent a purpose for his own life and doesn't need God to create his own purpose, he does need God for his purpose (and value) to be factually true, because either he's an accident, or he exists for a reason and has significance, being created in the image of God.
      Also, there's a sense in which not even a person who is an unbeliever can truly claim that his purpose comes from himself, because in order for you and I, for example, to reason about these things, we're implying that depending on what is true or reasonable to believe, we will conform our lives to that truth once it presents itself in a way we can recognize and receive it. This means that our purpose is not ultimately based on whatever we subjectively decide, it's based on whatever is true, which means our purpose comes from a source external to us, hence why we are conforming our lives once truth is revealed. Since an ultimate truth exists, then it ultimate purpose exists, all of which is an alignment with the existence of God/theism.
      Also, morality is connected to a person's value, because the source of crime against another person, sexism, racism, and discrimination, for example, are the cause of devaluing another person. This is why the Golden rule exists, in which "all people are (created) equal". This notion that all people are equal is anti-naturalistic. It contradicts naturalism, which is typically the worldview a given atheist or agnostic would hold who does not believe in the supernatural or God's existence.
      The reason why it contradicts naturalism is because in order to value each person equally, there is no natural basis for this conclusion. For example, a person who is obese is no less valuable than an athlete. A person who is paralyzed or in a coma is no less valuable than a person who is able-bodied. A person who is considered unattractive is no less valuable than a person who's beautiful. However, if all there is to the human identity is that we are physical beings of matter and energy and there's nothing immaterial concerning the human identity, then it is precisely our physical traits and abilities that make us valuable. This would lead to the conclusion (If we are consistent) that a person should only be valued based on their usefulness or beauty, and that does not lead to morality at all, at least to immorality, because this is the basis for sexism, racism, discrimination, etc.
      Therefore, in order to value people equally even though they are not equal on physical terms, a person must appeal to an immaterial aspect of the human identity to make that judgment, which is not compatible with naturalism.

He also mentions that James was stoned to death by the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem.
      Other ancient sources that mention the disciples include the writings of the second-century Greek philosopher Celsus, who criticized Christianity but acknowledged the existence of the disciples, and the works of the second-century Christian apologist Justin Martyr, who wrote about the teachings and deeds of Jesus and his followers.

    Human life has no intrinsic meaning, value, etc. We assign our own meaning to our lives. And it is obvious to me that different people assign different opinions about life’s worth and meaning, in accordance to their preferred values and goals. Actually, we all subjectively decide certain values and worth, whether we proclaim morality is subjective or objective. Some, like myself, place a high value on the only life that we are certain we have. I also place a high value on well-being, even though I admit that well-being is not well defined.
    Others empathizes their focus on some afterlife that they 'believe' exists. They claim that their moral foundation is a God. They claim that they know the nature of this God and they claim that they know what this God wants from them. Furthermore, they seem to know why they should abide by the things this God allegedly wants from them.
    Those people act in accordance with those beliefs. I am saying that it is their subjective opinion that any of this is actually true. If you have a subjective opinion of something, then all the consequences that follow must logically be subjective as well.
    And, even if the existence of this God were true, morality would still be subjective because it would be based on the subjective mind of this God. According to scripture, this God can change his mind and he can do as he pleases. That alone goes against the definition of objective morality.

      Its a difficult question to be sure but it all returns to the fallacy of infinite regression. We can't have an infinite sequence of past events. This argues then for a first cause. Something in which all things proceeded from and by. A first cause is a "necessary" cause meaning it must and always have existed. It is not contingent on anything but itself which means it can't be bound by time.
      This is especially true as we experience time in our universe. Time in our universe is directly related to the expansion of space. It is even subjective meaning it differs based on one's reference point and two people can experience time differently.

    The basis for human value is human's placing a subjective value on themselves. Because they don't want to die and have empathy for how other humans feel, they not only therefore place value on their own lives, but also on that of others.

      People also are prideful and tear each other down, they feel chemical pleasure from judging someone as lesser than they are. If human value is subjective then empathy and value is not right or wrong and prideful judgement isn’t right or wrong, it’s relative and meaningless.

Even those Chinese who doesn't believe in the Bible who wants not to believe cannot deny the fact that their original writing of a BOAT - when you check on their Chinese character it is written "a small boat with 8 mouths" (Meaning in a boat there are 8 people) and that writing came from their history.

    @askcliffe - I'm curious... why didn't you bring up the existence of George Washington as you have done in other videos? The student phrased the question as: "why should I believe it when you can't validate it out of your own perception". I think the student was just ultimately trying to pick your brain on the historical reliability of the gospels.

      @@charlesdarwin-bt6uv Actually I was thinking the opposite. In some of Cliffs's other videos he gets into details of non-Christian historical accounts of Jesus, the number of original Greek manuscripts that we have, the incredibly early dates of authenticity for the gospels, the archeological evidence, and the eye witnesses to the life of Jesus. I'm not a historical scholar by trade, but after some research I find that compared to other historical documents of that age, the 4 gospels are pretty impressive in terms of terms of reliability.

      I know what cliff claims about the non Christian historians. The point is that historians don't agree. There is nothing about anything they wrote that is evidence for the claims of Christianity. What it is is evidence that people believed an itinerant preacher called Jesus (not that he could have been, it would have been Yeshua) that existed and preached an apocalyptic message and that he was executed.
      That's an entirely unremarkable claim. I'll give you that as a starting point if you like but it doesn't get you anywhere. People exist. People get executed. People have religious beliefs and some of them preach them to others. So what?

      The number of manuscripts makes no difference. That's a fallacy you've used right there.
      They aren't early. Paul is quite close but he isn't an eye witness. The Gospels are all decades later than the events.
      You don't have any eye witnesses either. None.
      How did you test the reliability? I suspect what you did was use a fallacy. If you took Homer and found that Ithica existed. That we had discovered the site of Troy etc, would that mean that it was reliable in it's claim that Achilles was dipped in the river Stix to become invulnerable Exept for his heel? No. Sorry, but you have no way to rest the reliability of the core claims of the story. Confirming a story is set in a real place and contains accurate cultural detains doesn't tell you the story is true. That's a fallacy of composition.
