  • This is a zombie miniature painting tutorial for the beginner painter. It shows how to use a spray-on primer and Army Painter's Quickshade to shade the miniature and produce excellent results in a relatively quick and easy way.

    PRODUCTS USED:
    -Spray-on primer: (Necrotic Flesh) by ARMY PAINTER
    -Paints (various base and layer colours) by CITADEL (see below)
    -Quickshade dip (Strong Tone) by ARMY PAINTER
    -Matt spray (Dullcote) by TESTORS
    -Clear Red paint (X-27) by TAMIYA
    -Brushes (Kolinsky Series 33 sizes 0, 1, 2, and 10/0, + Series768 size 10 ) by ROSEMARY AND CO.
    -Clear stands (25mm, 1.5mm thick) by LITKO GAME ACCESSORIES
    Also: Mineral turpentine (white spirit in UK), superglue, craft knife.
    By popular request, here are the paints* I used for the base colors for the five zombies in episode 1 that you can see in the final shot from left to right (also used as the title image) we have:
    -Zombies 1 + 2: Macragge Blue for the suits, Ceramite White (or White Scar) white for the shirt.
    -Zombie 3: Caledor Sky for the jeans, Averland Sunset for the shirt, Moot Green for the hair.
    -Zombie 4: Baneblade Brown for the suite, Lothern Blue for the shirt.
    -Zombie 5: Deamonette Hide for the shorts with Moot Green for the trim, white shirt and trainers.
    -Zombie 6: Jokaero Orange for the jumpsuit.
    (Also, for all of the non-runners I used Stormvermin Fur for their shoes)
    *Please note, I actually used the older Citadel paint range that has since been replaced so the paints named are the nearest equivalent from the current range which should give you very similar, but not necessarily precisely the same tone.

    I've been painting miniatures for over 10 years now and zombies are one of my favorite things to paint, but you sir have just used so much less effort than I could ever even imagine to produce results equal to (if not better than) my own.
    the best tutorial I have ever watched. make more.

      Thank you Andrew. A compliment from a fellow zombie painter means a lot :) I was also surprised by how such an easy method could produce such good results, which is why I felt it was worth sharing. There will be more to come...

      I'm in the same position than andrew willis haha. I used to take 2-3 hours per zombie in the firsts Zombicides. Then I got disgusted because there were too many... I looked again at your tutorial recently, and painted the hole zombies from Black Plague in a shorter amount of time with better results. I just use a 50/50 mix of badab black/agrax earthshade washes from Games instead of Quickshade but the idea is the same. Thanks man, your video gave me the motivation to continue my zombicides :)

    This is absolutely the finest miniature painting video I have seen. I can tell that lots of thought went into the production, and the result is outstanding. I would recommend this video to anyone learning the hobby, and I personally appreciate the simple steps/organization, visual examples (with before and after contrast), helpful tips (including fixing mishaps), and equipment list at the end. Very sophisticated execution. Thank you.

    I used to paint D&D miniatures as a teen, but I was never able to achieve the level of detail the professionals did. Of course, back then, CZcams didn't exist so I had to wait 35+ years for your mad skillz to finally motivate me to pick the hobby back up. Even a poorly painted miniature is better than one fresh out of the box. Kudos to you, Sorastro!

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  Před 8 lety

      Thanks a lot Tim! I also re-entered the hobby as a grown man and I have to say I enjoy it even more now than I did as a kid; I don't know if it's just having more patience, more skill perhaps - I'm not sure, but I'm glad the I never lost the childhood sense of wonder either :)

    • @Timberella3003
      @Timberella3003 Před 8 lety

      So THIS just happened - I went spelunking through OLD boxes of junk to dig out my old painting supplies and found a box of modeling paint...from 30+ years ago. If I could include a photo, I would. Yep, all dried. My son still has tubes of acrylic paint from his art classes. They are all Liquitex (59mL behemoths) which, from my research, is not a good option for miniatures. Thoughts?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  Před 8 lety

      Wow! I'm not a entirely surprised to hear your paints have dried up after 30 years :) regarding the acrylic paints - I've never actually tried painting minis with something like that so can't advise either way I'm afraid. Anyone else?

    • @Timberella3003
      @Timberella3003 Před 8 lety

      +Sorastro's Surprised that they're dried? No. Surprised that I still have them after all these years? Definitely. Painting While we're at it, do you prefer Army Painter's Quik Shade (used here) or GW's Nuln Oil Wash (used in your Stormtrooper video)?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  Před 8 lety

      Nuln Oil is a terrific all-purpose, off-black wash. The Quickshade produces arguably stronger contrast with very smooth transitions from dark to light but is more icky to use (requiring white spirit to clean) and turns everything quite brown-ish. It's also tricky to use with precision but is perfect for batch painting hoards of undead!

  • @bryn11036
    @bryn11036 Před 10 lety +3

    Thanks I just painted my set and it looks amazing. Must admit moments after applying the quick shade my hopes dropped thinking I totally messed the entire thing up...but after getting rid of the excess and letting them dry, I was flat amazed about the look of the little guys. Amazing! Thanks for the help again!

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  Před 9 lety +1

      Thanks for sharing your progress! It makes me very happy to hear success stories like this :) It is a bit scary when you first put the Quickshade on and it all looks a bit of a mess, but - like you say - it's after they're dried and matte sprayed that the process really pays off. Grats anyway - enjoy the zombies!

    You hit the right spot with your video because this was exactly what I was lookin for.
    After watching countless painting tutorials, I found that this one really breaks it down to the bases and makes it easy for a beginner to paint their Zombicide miniatures.
    I´d love you to do tutorials on the specific Zombicide minis like the Fatties and the Abomination.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  Před 10 lety +1

      Thank you - I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful. I may well do a shorter video on a specific zombie type as you suggest. I actually paint the fatties in exactly the same way as I did the walkers + runner in the tutorial, so I might do an abomination as I like to give them some additional shading. I could also do a survivor or two.

    This video (and ep.2) are great. As everyone else has said, it's really well put together and easy to follow. The music to match the theme of what's being painted was a nice touch. How is this the only video you've ever made? This is extremely well done and informative. I've read a few tutorials on Zombicide speed painting and this is by far the best due to the visualization of the steps. It's hard to believe these were basically speed painted as they look incredible and I'd be proud to table something half as good.
    Very well done and here's to hoping you do some more painting videos in the future.

    Seriously good tip about the blood mixture, as zombie blood would naturally be de-oxygenated, and therefore dark, almost black, and not bright red like arterial blood.
    Many people make the mistake of overdoing the gore, spoiling the finished effect when they first start painting blood.
    You show the right way to make a realistic look to the blood.
    Again, even your starter videos can show older modelers new tips and techniques than most others.
    All the very best

    Thanks so much. I have been painting miniatures for many years but this is my first journey into the realm of the undead, and I wanted a technique that would tone down and make the figs look grim.
    I also have to say that you did an excellent job of filming and narrating the process. Clean. simple, no rambling.

    I needed to post it here, Thank you so much Sorastro's Painting!
    This video inspired me to (Finally) start painting. And I used this Complete Guide.
    I started trying out Army Painter and Citadel paint on the zombies. ( Nurgling Rot was a succes!)
    And recently started painting Marvel Crisis Protocol.
    For the time being I'll try out Contrast painting to build up some courage.
    I can't wait to try using your Guides on Venom and Hulk.

    I'm a total beginner, and I've already saw this video about 10 or more times because I'm afraid to do wrong with my minis... In Brazil we don't have the Citadel Paints or any Miniature like Zombicide or Warhammer to buy and paint, so it's hard to replace or acquire new minis... Great Videos, looking forward for new ones, maybe with the survivors ^^ Thanks for all the help!

    Hi Thomas! Sorry I can't reply to your comment directly as it seems you may have replies disabled? I'll answer you here instead: I've had quite a few requests for some more Zombicide videos. Whilst it looks like Fantasy Flight Games are going to keep me busy with their IA releases for a while I will try and squeeze out a fresh Zombicide video over the summer - either a hero video or perhaps the other zombie types. Looking at Episodes I and 2 I don't think there's anything I would do differently for painting large numbers of zombies, although for Black Plague I don't think I'll bother with the clear stands; although they look great, I find them just too fragile for storage/transportation.

    I've always been a fan of your miniature painting, and this video takes the cake. Very high production value, and fantastic results. Thanks so much for outlining the details of your method, especially how you "refine" your Quickshade application. I've got a can of the stuff, but I've always been afraid of dark/sloppy results.

      Thanks so much for the positive feedback; as a first-time CZcams-er the encouragement is most welcome. Well I hope you feel more confident about cracking that can open and giving it a go. Just remember it's not until you hit the figure with the matt spray that the results really show themselves. Best of luck!

    Nice video, I have about 100 Mantic Zombies I use for Warhammer that need doing, I have the Necrotic Flesh Primer and Strong Dip, I just need to take the plunge and get them done. You video has given me the kick in the arse I need to get started. I'll be painting my Ghouls in a similar fashion too, but with a lighter drybrush over the Necrotic Flesh and a Flesh Shade wash to make them look more ghoulish than dead.
