  • Where does Celtic folklore and Mythology come from? The answer lies in this tale...

    After the last battle the Fianna of Ireland ever fought, a mysterious stranger appeared to Fionn mac Cumhail, leader of that legendary warrior poets of Erin and Alba.
    She approached Ośin, who himself was born of the realm of faery, and asks for his hand in marriage, before transporting him on a magic horse across the waves to the land of 'Tir Na Nog', or the land of the everyone. One of the names for the Celtic Otherworld in Irish Mythology, similar perhaps to Annwn of Welsh Mythology or even the Avalon of Arthurian Myth.
    This story of the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic folklore tells of how the son of Finn travelled back from the Otherworld and gave all the stories of the Fianna to Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, who wrote them all down for posterity.
    Thanks Pat!

    As I have a visual emparement, reading quite difficult for me. I mostly listen to audio books. Here in the netherlands are not many audio books on the Fae folklore and myths. So thank you very much for telling the thales, I LOVE to listen ❤🙏

      St Patrick has been taken in in various ways ways, positive and negative, hasn’t he. It’s just nice to imagine him not dressed as a leprechaun drinking a pint of green Guinness. 🌳🧚🏻‍♂️☘️😂

    Touching story, beautifully described especially with all that smoke attacking you.
    Can you recommend a book for the tales of Finn cycle…I bought Early Irish Myths and Sagas and it hasn’t mentioned him

    • @TheStoryCrow
      @TheStoryCrow  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yep. So get ‘Irish fairy tales’ in the Wordsworth classics series illustrated by Arthur rackham - there’s a wealth of Finn stories in there, beautifully written. Don’t be put off by the title. My ‘birth of osín’ story is strongly influenced by it.
      Also go for ‘over nine waves’ by Marie Heaney. Bit dryer but good.
      And for more academic background to the tales go for ‘irelands immortals’ by mark Williams. That’s context.
      Yeah I was a bit disappointed by early Irish myths and sagas in some ways….
      Happy delving ☺️

    Ive been trying to find some info on Mag Ildathach. I cant seem to find anything on it because there doesn't seem to be much on Irish mythos online. I would be very grateful if you could point me in a direction

    • @TheStoryCrow

      Is that the Realm of Many Colours? I know what you mean, the information passed down seems so patchy - yet tantalising! It might be another name for ‘the otherworld’ in general or another world totally lost to history. I don’t know my friend. Let me know what you turn up. It reminds me of certain Mahayana Buddhist pure realms, like those described in the flower garland sutra, for eg… Left field association there 😂 but it just came to me. I think there’s lots of similarity between the feel of some Celtic and Buddhist Otherworlds. IMO. 🙏💫✨
