I was in North Korea for a week in 1992 for a "goodwill" visit. During one of the tours, our tour guide proudly pointed out the "still under construction" hotel to us and I asked her when it was going to be completed, she gave me a dirty look and walked away. Another American member of our group laughed and explained to me how it would likely never be completed because of the structural issues (like the crooked elevator shafts).

The machine next to the beds in North Korean hotels is SUPPOSED to be 3 things. It’s supposed to have controls for the bed, like to move to foot up, the head up, but they don’t work, it’s supposed to control to TV, but those don’t work (and even if they did, I’d still use the remote), and is a radio, which doesn’t work

I remember reading a book written by a guy that had escaped one of the many “camps” they have there. It was brutal. When he was a child he’d be so starving that him & other kids would have to catch rats to cook & eat. Also he would try to hold in his poop for as long as possible because he thought it would help his stomach to feel more full. This occurred in early 2000’s so it wasn’t that long ago either. Anyone that escaped was instantly killed so he was the only person to escape & tell about it. I wish I could remember the name of that book, I’d love to read it again. *Update: name of the book is called “Escape From Camp 14”, I highly recommend reading this book*

We live in a disturbing world where a government has so little regard for their own citizens. Like imagine being so poor you are living in poverty while meanwhile your government has hotels full of furniture and empty space that aren't used, unless by random visitors who rarely ever come. It's like being a child in a house where the parents make you live outside in the grass and starve, while people rarely come over and get treated like kings...it's bazar how people get in power who are so neglectful towards those who they're responsible to take care of. Some suffering is good to experience, because it creates empathy towards others experiencing the same or worse suffering. It's probably hard for someone born into the lap of luxury who never experiences harsh living conditions to imagine what others suffer and want to help. Priorities are so important for people in power to have, because people are infinitely more important than things. I wish more people realized that. You know what's better than appearing well off? It's treating people well. Life is not about competing with each other, but helping each other. We all have differences, but not one person is more important than another. Countries are made up of people who are all equally valuable and important. It's delusional to think otherwise. It's cruel to deprive those we're responsible for in exchange for trying to keep up appearances. What good does it do anyways if you just fail miserably in the end? None.

So basically, money that could've been spent on the country to make it better was instead built just to prove "whatever u can do, I can do better". If there was nothing wrong with it and if it was better than the housing the people live in now, I'd say let the people move it at the same cost of rent, to at least give the illusion that the country is better than others, which is what they're trying to give off. As the phrasing goes "a kingdom is not a kingdom without its people", so u can't really call this a hotel unless u have or at least once have had guests staying inside it

One has to wonder how deep the basement goes down and how it bares this weight for the past 30 years, is quite amazing. The glass covering this structure and the weight of it and the structural integrity of this concrete building to bare the weight of it's clad glass exterior is also amazing. And then the weight of the the other special features seems remarkable that the structure has not collapsed under it's own weight.

The "Enigma" machines in the hotel rooms are probably microphones with transmitting devices so the North Korean police can listen to conversations the visitors think are private.
After what the North Korean government did to Otto Warmbier a few years ago, that's one country I will NEVER visit! Warmbier suffered severe torture and abuse after being sentenced to 15 years of hard labor at one of that country's notorious prison camps. The young man supposedly stole a "propaganda poster" from the hotel where he was staying, although the poster was not in his luggage at the time of his arrest and has never been located.
More than a year later, a comatose Warmbier was repatriated to the US due to what doctors termed severe brain damage, possibly a result of waterboarding and various other torture methods. He died soon after his return, having never regained consciousness.
Consequently, North Korea-watchers report that the country's tourism activity appears to be non-existent.

I had already guessed it was in North Korea the moment I saw it. Just looking at the city makes it clear. North Korea is known to be a pretty sad country to live in.

There are many projects through the world, like this, and it's so depressing when you see a building half-finished and just eerie feeling, empty space, not used properly, always reminds you of something not finished or some dark story... I would never alow for that kind of building to just stay like that, Nothing worse then that...

It would be so much better to open it up, let people live in it. 3000 rooms. One room 2 people. 6000 people. Then it collapses. 6000 people die. Ya nothing worse then leaving it empty.

Of course it's a spying machine.
And i think the tower would be best used as a clock and for weather report.
How cool it would to first look for weather at the scraper and see the sky together for double assurance.

Literally the second I saw the city and the building I felt like it was in Pyongyang, I don't even know why.
Pyongyang just gives out the vibe of grey sad city, kinda like NYC if there wouldn't be a central park.

"Relax, " said the night man,
    "We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave! "
