  • quickdirt.com has several articles that I've written about my weight loss. They are related to mountain biking because that is the theme of the blog, but they will give you a good picture about why I started losing weight and some of my methodology. See the links below.
    I originally started losing weight because I was worried about the direction of my health, but I've experienced so many other positive side effects that I am hoping I can share my story with others and inspire a few people to make a change.

    The About Page - an overall story of the blog, but it begins with the weight loss

    I started by only looking at calories, but eventually the lifestyle choices led me to some of the same type of eating that you would find in this book - The Paleo Diet. I stick to the diet about 70 percent of the time, but the overall themes are very much in line with my values. Here is a link:

    This is a response to all the people who have told me I didn't need to lose weight because I looked good as I was or that I lost too much weight. I just want emphasize that I didnt start losing weight for cosmetic reasons. I started to feel unhealthy and my health was heading in the wrong direction. It wasn't about how much weight I had put on. It was about the speed that I was putting weight on and shifting course before it got out of hand. I wanted to avoid the chronic health problems that are associated with obesity. I did make losing 50 pounds a goal for this video, but my goal was not to maintain a 50 pound weight loss. Right now my weight is 165 and I feel good about where I'm at. I eat lots of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. I continue to bike, run and stretch. I feel much healthier now than before I lost the weight.

      +James Knott Without knowing your actual height, assuming you're around the high 5' - low 6' range, 204 lbs is considered well over obese, so shedding the weight was for the better, regardless of how you felt. Congrats on the goal met! We all just wish beer didn't come with the cost of bidding farewell to the BBA.

      +James Knott I lost 100 lbs. in 5 months from just eating healthy fruits, veggies, lean protein and walking. People were always asking if I had cancer, or if I was sick and didn't look right. My theory of that all was that people get so used to you looking one way for so many years, that when you finally lose all that weight quickly people aren't used to it and think you don't look right. Regardless of what they thought I looked like, I never felt better in my life. Congrats on your weight loss!

    Good vid, very interesting to see. I am using the same methodology you did (careful nutrition control and exercise) and have so far gone from 226 to 203 (at last weigh in, which was over a week ago so probably a bit lower now). I am aiming for around 154 too as I am also 5'10". Oh, and great to see that you havent given up on the ale, I'm a big beer fan myself and want it to be part of my life again, just not for a while!

    Nicely done James! I was on my way to losing more weight but then this whole craft beer thing took hold. I'm happy I'm at least maintaining in the meantime. But for me weight isn't everything as I'm as strong as ever. Losing body fat but putting on muscle doesn't make for dramatic weight loss. How loose my pants fit is more important.

    • @JamesKnott
      @JamesKnott  Před 10 lety

      It's really not about how much you weigh as it is about how healthy you feel. If you feel good, that's what really matters. There was definitely too much beer in my life at that point. The big difference is that now I know how many calories are in each one and I have benchmark to guide my consumption.

      Awesome job, James! I think you hit a REALLY big point of craft beer drinkers: drinking way TOO much and I think that is why I am leaving the beer world. It makes it so hard to be an example of restraint and discipline(without ever trying to make people do it) when there are some craft beer drinkers that drink more beer in a month or two then I will in 2 to 3 years. Thanks for this and keep it up! I am a biker too and do it everyday but maybe not as intensely!

      I ride about 3 times a week and run twice. Average rides are 2 hours each and average runs are about an hour. What's more important though is your diet. It's very easy to offset any amount of exercise that you do with a big meal or unhealthy snacks.

    James Knott from September -October 2014 I went from 189 to 161 and I didn't reach my goal of 157lb. I did it by jogging/running and eating healthy. Halloween, Thanksgiving , Christmas and New Years day came and I kinda maintained the weight but, after that until now I went back to 189-90lb. In May of 2015 I fell and hurt my knees and I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis. If I would have realized earlier I wouldn't have done all that strenuous running and jogging I did and I may have delayed the osteoarthritis from developing. Maybe not having that fall may have helped too. I probably already had it but, I may have ignored the symptoms and worsened it by running and jogging. I take one aleve and one advil together for a day's pain relief everyday. The pain isn't really much if i don't take the medication but, for sure I know the osteoarthritis is progressing. My question is, what is your suggestion for me to get back to 161lb or even my goal of 157lb with my osteoarthritis present. I'm not suppose to do any high impact activities to my knees at all and I have to watch my activities eveyday so I don't aggravate my arthritis. Please help.

    • @JamesKnott
      @JamesKnott  Před 8 lety

      Have you tried biking? A "well-adjusted" bike is very easy on your joints. Also, it's all about calories in being less than calories out. So, you don't even need to exercise as long as you count your calories correctly. Although, I think exercising is good for your health. Maybe you should consider swimming or aquarobics.

      I was cycling 4 times a week and walking. I was down to about 1500 calories a day plus I ate to offset the exercise calories burnt. If I burned 400 calories riding then my total eating was 1500 + 400 = 1900 calories. I now keep my base calories at 2000 a day and add my exercise calories to that.

      @onepunchmanworkout5918 Před 7 lety +1

      Listen, you don't have to eat fruits and veggies to lose weight but it helps with your health, portion control is the main factor, people tell you to eat fruits and veggies because you can eat a lot of them and it will fill you up, but if you ate a normal portion of pizza, or just below it, you'd also lose weight, a long with some increased activity, you'd see an slow and steady weight loss, for me I used to weigh 225 pounds, and now I'm 175, 50 pounds!
      So just remember portion control, and activity! :).

    Great job. What is your daily calorie intake? I lost several 15 pounds easily using a low calorie plan. However, my personal trainer don't want me to get "skinny fat".

      When I was losing weight I was down to about 1500 calories a day plus the calories I burnt exercising. Now I am at 2050 a day plus the calories that I burn exercising - which is about 2800 calories per day.

    Six weeks ago I was 242 pounds (110kg). I'm now 220 (100kg) and have lost it by cycling and healthy eating with no snacking (except for fruit). My goal is 165 (75kg). No rush, lifestyle change. Exercise routine and diet, not 'fad' diet which is not sustainable......

    • @JamesKnott
      @JamesKnott  Před 10 lety +2

      No. But, I did cut back. Also, I don't drink nearly as many "imperial" - high ABV beers. They have a lot of sugar in them. One imperial stout can have 300 calories. That's 1/6th of all the calories a person who is losing weight can have in a day.
