- After 3 years of hosting the Better Beer Authority, I had put on a few extra pounds. I decided to cut back, but didn't want to give up beer completely. Losing weight is difficult, but losing weight as a beer drinker can be even harder. What four beers did I rely on the most during my journey to better health? What characteristics should you look for in craft beer when you want to lose weight?
Beast is a solid beer. I'm glad to see a video from you every once in a while man.
It's been fun making a few simple videos. I might do it more this fall when my kids go back to school.
Good review, I love craft beers but I have no problem with light beer. I have not had Milwaukee's best light in a long time, I'll have to grab some soon.
I lost about 10-12 pounds, and got my triglycerides back in check. That was my main goal, not really losing weight. I didn't change my beer drinking habits, but I did stop eating fried food (especially french fries), cut down my food portions, and started eating more healthy choices. I also started running a bit. Beer drinking in my life isn't going to change any time soon for me (despite what my doctor tells me)!
Hi James, first I want to say that I really enjoyed the Better Beer Authority videos. I stumbled upon them recently, and really thought they represented the best of craft beer. Tasty but not snobby. Must be the rust belt mentality. Hopefully you can do some more in the future.
Congrats on losing the weight. That's some discipline. What about Guinness beer? It's only 125 calories per bottle with some nice flavor?
Guinness is a very good choice. I highly recommend it for people trying to watch their calorie count. Definitely has more flavor than the light domestic lagers. Although it's lighter in flavor than a lot of people think.
I'll give Milwauikee's Best Light a try. I tried the Miller 64 and agree - tastes more like mineral water. Not a beer connoisseur, but it's nice to have once in a while.
I think miller lite changed their recipe en the last 12 months. I could be wrong but the may have removed the HFCS and replaced it with something else. I find myself bloated after drinking Miller light.
I m gonna try the other beers you recommended in this video.
Thanks
Thanks for the vid, I stopped drinking beer because I was gaining alot of weight, have lost 15 since I stopped, I also workout a few times a week, but always want beer on some giving days and feel completely guilty when I start drinking it, looking to have some light ones on days I want beer without feeing
Like crap after lol
I love beer but as I get older my stomach got a little puggy, not too bad by any means but it's just age.. I have been going more towards light beer. It sucks, but I rather have some kind of beer then no kind of beer, savy?
Good for you
My girlfriend told me, that everytime I goto the fridge for a can of beer (330ml), I should do 10 pushups at least, 10 push ups is nothing for a man like me, so id I drink beer only, and do my push up like that for like 10 days(I heart that if you drink beer only not eating the record is lasting 33 days or survivie), so can I lose weight really fast by doing what I do?
My favorite beer for when I need to watch calories is Guinness. 125 calories puts it nearly in the "light beer" category, but it still tastes damn good.
I agree. A lot of people think of Guinness as a big beer, but it's actually very light.
Lol, that Milwaukee’s Best gave me gas so bad people would stay far away from me. I grew up on Milwaukee long necks returnable bottles. That’s all we drank because it taste good.
I'm currently on a weight loss journey and love craft beer. I run 4 miles a day to help with my calorie intake vs out and limit drinking my craft beers on my cheat day which is Saturday.
I tried to limit myself to one cheat day per week as well. I still drank craft beer, but it was more of a special occasion thing.
I ride/workout everyday and consider beer a reward. I'll avoid excess especially when I don't exercise. I typically enjoy a nice saison after those hot humid rides. Anything light and local is thumbs up for me. I can't get into the BMC stuff. Like you said it's beer flavored water. Cheers
I definitely prefer the flavor of a bigger more intense beer, but I'm pretty flexible. I also cake too, but I can't eat that all the time. I'm just trying to strike that good balance. I had a board game night at my house last night where we were doing samples of some pretty cool beers, but we also had a few light beers mixed in as well.
I was a BUDWEISER "HEAVY" guy for many many many years. I switched to Miller Lite a little over a month ago and I have lost 6 pounds. Hopefully over more time I shed more weight. I shall let you know!
Lost 15 pounds and in terms of beer I just avoided stouts and tracked my calories. If I wanted a beer I'd go for a Archers Mango Wheat (135 calories).
What if you cannot STAND the taste of Miller Lite?
live life buddy!
golden road wolf pup session ipa is good...you could also work out/exercise to make room for beer.
Oh... I did a lot of that. I probably average 100 miles of biking and 10 miles of running per week. I don't/didn't have any more room for exercise in my life.
I have lost significant weight twice in my life. The first was intentional as I was on a 'bulking' weight lifting program and wanted to loose the extra fat I had gained. I used myfitnesspal (both for gain and loss) and had great success. I never really had any go to weight loss beers, but (like you) I was very conscious of leaving enough cals for my end of the day beer. I am now currently on my second significant weight loss of my life, albeit unintended. When my first kid came along there was a lot less time for all of my exercise hobbies (weight lifting, running, mtb, 14er bagging) so I made the very conscious decision that when I did have time to 'work out' I would only do what I enjoyed most, which happens to be cardio. I now eat very healthy food (whole foods mostly), but I drink what ever I want; 1-2 craft beers/day during the week and 2-3 craft beers/day on weekends. If I have an especially epic ride or run I will treat myself with ice cream or some other junk. Btw, are you on strava?
I am on Strava. Look up "James Knott" from Columbus, Ohio.
Followed. Cheers brother
high knee light diet and exercise helped me loose 65 lbs!
It is really tough to lose weight when you are a craft beer fan. Some craft beer brewers make light beers - like Sam Adams and Wachusett in my area.
I lost 30 pounds in 2013-2014 but I walked 2-4 miles per day and still would have a full-bodied beer. If I had gone the light beer route I would have lost the weight more quickly I expect.
It's not the choice that everyone would make. I chose to make craft beer a special occasion thing. I still love a big double IPA every now and then.
Eat less/no bread. Eat more fruits & veggies. Smaller portions. Your payoff?? Drink more beer.
lol Iv'e thought that way but then I feel like an alcoholic. Best bet for me is enjoy the craft stuff every 3 or 4 days.
Drinking water is more important than most things.
What about Natural Light?
I find that craft beer fans WILL drink American Lager beer. It has its place in the beer world but it may not be their first choice. If I'm losing weight, I may just go with Miller Lite just because Beast Light just doesn't have the flavor I'm looking for. But again, beer taste is so objective that they may drink a high ABV stout and then crank off 10 reps at 225lbs.
one year I lost 60 lbs, in 3.5 months....eating only chili for lunch, and about 8 Miller Lites a night....I was also working 13 hour days......Extreme, but Effective! =P
This had to be one of the greatest weight loss techniques haha
I agree that Milwaukee's Best Light is the hidden jewel of the light beer world.
I always figure that if I'm going to drink a light beer, then I might as well save a few bucks. This tastes better than Bud Light and Natural Light to me.
MBL must be good I see it around as people saying it's great.
I'm a Michelob Ultra fan to be honest.
Sad to say i gained quite the Stomach over the years so I just started losing weight as of March 2019. Id like to get to 170s again, thats when I was satisfied with my weight. As far as Ale choices, I mostly Drink what I want, then eat less if I need to. That said depends on the day as I have a physical Job. Im also in a life situation right now where I need to save as much as I can. My choice Ales right now are Yuengling Ale, Newcastle, and Guinness Extra Stout. All are under 200 calories. Tanqueray Gin is also very good. Its hard for me to Choose domestics over my cherised ale, not drinking or drinking less is eaiser for me. That said my weight loss is crucial to me so whatever I need to do. I cant wait to get to my goal weight and get a 400+ calorie allowance back.
I use an app called lose it! to track my calories, they have almost every craft beer you can find in there and I've lost about 75lbs in a year without needing to adjust my beer intake very much. I try to get at least 1/3 calories from protein, 1/3 fat, and 1/3 carbs... I find it hard to over drink in that ratio
I was a MyFitnessPal guy. Congrats on your weight loss. I bet you feel great.
My go to light loss beer is coors light
For low calorie I would do Guinness, 125 cals so a little more cals but so much more flavor than the light beers.
Guiness is a great choice. I actually wish I would have mentioned it in the video - although I did recommend Irish Dry Stouts as a whole.
I didnt think you were making videos still. How much beer were you drinking when you were overweight. Not saying you are were overweight.
Have you considered home brewing? Recipe apps like BrewTarget will estimate the caloric value of your brew. Thus, allowing you to customize the ingredients in a recipe to hit a target calorie count.
I have home-brewed in the past, but it's a little time consuming to be an efficient answer to the problem. I always find that I drink MORE beer when I home-brew. You don't find that to be true?
Agreed, it is a lot of work. I've gotten into the habit of doing 3 batches at a time; say, over a weekend, 3 times a year. Drag out the gear, clean, brew, clean some more.... Back when my kegerator setup was working, it was easy to fill up the glasses. Now that I've gone back to bottling, the norm is 1 or 2 bottles a day. I also share with friends and family. BTW, I really enjoyed all your beer reviews back in the day! It's good to have opinions to draw on when trying new beers.
I like home brewing, but it's a lot of cooking and cleaning. As a stay-at-home dad I already have to do a lot of cooking and cleaning, so it's not really a good "escape" from my daily life. Maybe when my kids get older I can pick it up again.
The Beast 😳
Weight loss and beer don't always gel. I've lost 35 pounds this year running instead of giving up craft beer :)
Running is a very efficient way to burn calories. Are you training for any events?
Training for a 10 mile in October actually
Good luck. Sounds fun. I always have events coming up that keep me motivated to stay in shape.
How many would you drink though?
whiskey
If you don't want to sacrifice flavor *at* *all*, Red Stripe lager at 139 calories is a pick. Guinness at 125 even better if you like stouts.
I think you could add a few more pound because I think you are just a little bit skinny; you're a good looking guy!
Milwaukee best light is solid, but holy shit Milwaukee best ice is awful
Miller light in any city around the world...
🤣🤣🤣
James what happend? serious shit? Otherwise wtf is going on?
