Recorded in Montreux festival. Patti Smith - Vocal Lenny Kaye-Guitar Tom Verlaine-Bass Jay Dee Daugherty -Drum Tony Shanahan-keyboard , Piano Like A rolling stone by Bob Dylan
Thank You Bob Dylan For Writing This Masterpiece . Thank You For Letting Artists Like Patti Smith Cover them. Patti Puts So Much Of Herself Into These Covers.
I had the pleasure of seeing this live. Patti and Tom Verlaine stepped in at the last minute, the support band for Garbage having dropped out. An unbelievable bonus. When Garbage came on stage, Shirley Manson mentioned how humbled she felt having such a legend as support. Patti was my first gig ever in 1979 in Biarritz.
Many of the masters know humility and perform from the heart . Not ego. Miss Smith is a true gem. A master poet and musician. Well done Pattie and band! Have a listen to the full version of Pattie performing at Nobel ceremony doing another master’s A Hard Rains Gonna Fall for Dylan. Beyond priceless.
Apparently you've not heard Dylan singing the song he wrote. Patti Smith is a horrific no-talent who appeals to a generation trying to figure out how to proceed without "The Beatles" and Dylan. So they fall for horseshit becuase it is promoted as "awesome". So let's do a Dylan song, because we haven't anything of our own. Oh -- but "GLORIA!" -- that was written by Van morrison. What else is she known for, except being a suck up to the "Beatniks" who died out three generations before she was born. If we have no imagination, then let's plunder someone else's past.
@@jnagarya519 well Her husband Sonic Fred Smith of the great rock band MC5 wasn't too shabby. Tho I will agree w u a bit on the surge of youngsters who are "woke", hip and cool that "dig" Patti...and "Hey man, have you read ginsberg, kerouac?" They make me wanna puke (is that too harsh? 😀)
I love Dylan...a extreme few can actually sing a Dylan song...this is the best cover of a Dylan song I have ever heard...i am in awe....Patti, you did Mr. Zimmerman proud!!! And, you have a new fan!!
Parts of the phasing effective -- like she was digging the knife in, skewering her enemy. A heartless thing to do,, but somehow you don't hate her or Dylan when they sing it. I'll save this version, thanks;

Albeit being above half century old, I had never heard about Patti Smith until I watched this video... Given the extremely derogatory comments I read, I'll have to research a bit about her...
i especially like Patti's singing. the band plays the chords, very well but without any real sparks or roughness. maybe they should have had some extra female backing vocals in the chorus.
rjkaneda - Supposedly nobody liked it but Dylan, but the delayed chording Al Kooper did on the organ is what makes Dylan’s studio version rock. It’s simple and primitive but it never sounded the same when Kooper left. Find a live version that doesn’t suck, and hang onto it. Patty’s versions are better than Dylan’s, but everybody’s live versions are better than Dylan’s. The man can’t do live performances unless he’s doing acoustic solos.
I think they're too awed by the song to really do it justice. That's kind of OK, though; there's no doubt that Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye are, at some level, just plain old rock and roll fans. (Kaye put together Nuggets, after all.)
"Now you don't talk so loud . . . " That must have been wishful thinking on somebody's part. Adversity has done nothing to silence me. I bitch non-stop about scrounging for my next (decent) meal and about selling my plasma for Internet access. "How does it feel?" Feels okay. I'm alright.
'Speak to us', yelled a fool. Well son, I guess the last time someone did a stupid thing like that, was before this song was recorded in the infamous 'Judas'-recording of the bootleg-series. Related are you? Could it be your father? Forgive me my 'bad english'. Go play on the freeway, fool..
Everything in life gets better to the sound of Patti Smith.

OH MY GOD Patti does it again. Broke thru my cold heart to the tears
Patti has been a Rolling Stone and keeps it real here...
Patti is a poet and what I love is that she sang this song like Dylan wrote it.
Awesome job by Lenny. Love him too.
All my love and recognition to Lenny Kaye too, because he is so amazing and important, love this version ❤😊
As we are all one, we all know how it feels to be on our own.
Patti is the QUEEN
So excellent!!!!!
Patti, you make me cry! Just great!!!
Bob Dylan and Patti Smith are the best

Patti is one the greatest Rock'n Roll queen forever. We love you !
You are totally oblivious to history. Compared with which she is a gawd awful non-talent.

No Secrets. Patti never let anyone get her kicks for her . Ever
This sounds better by Patti than anyone else who has done this other than Dylan

This song is that great that it's impossible to do a bad version of it even if you should forget some of the lyrics
I love what'Lenny is singing here!
gonna get used to Her doing Dylan Justice Like a Rolling Stone
An excellent version from Patti of Dylan's angry classic...
Nobody does Dylan better
Like a Rolling Stone She's the Direction Home
The Best
Comment on arrive à créer une chanson comme ça, elle est vraiment magique !
Like the guitar's metallic RED! Oh cool, only ten years ago>????? Very awesome.
Next to Dylan's version, Patties version is fantastic.
Io ti voglio tanto bene Patti... BRA/ITA
Nobody does Dylan better than Patti
Vengo hoy decepcionado un 1ero de Enero del 2021.
Patti Smith
A few flubs on the lyrics, but I can never have enough of this song....
Goood

my kind of Gal...
Nice cover, originally a Bob Dylan song.
No, REALLY? Snark!
I always thought it was a menudo's song...
Patti and Bobby sittin a tree....
i especially like Patti's singing. the band plays the chords, very well but without any real sparks or roughness. maybe they should have had some extra female backing vocals in the chorus.
They also needed a lead guitar throwing some electric riffs out every so often.

Nobody sings this song like Bob Dylan. I feel something very essential is missing if he's not the one performing this song. But maybe that's just me.
What about Jimi Hendrix's great performance at Monterey?
I think they're too awed by the song to really do it justice. That's kind of OK, though; there's no doubt that Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye are, at some level, just plain old rock and roll fans. (Kaye put together Nuggets, after all.)
Anybody who doesn’t like this needs a slap
Fuck you. Patti Smith is one of the biggest phonies and no-talents of all time. Want to dig this song? -- go to Dylan's original.
@@jnagarya519 im sorry for your brain damage
Threw the rums a dime? 😁
Do the rope a bime ?
We don't need a Dylan-imitator -- petending to be talented -- doing Dylan. We have Dylan.

♥️....desde Argentina 🇦🇷✌️👏
Trying to figure out whether I like it or not... I agree with Protestfolk here below but the Rock is here... mixed feelings
how does it feel?????????????????
seems like she's singing lyrics in too loveless/non-emphatic a way ( especially "now you don't talk so loud" phrasing), in my view.
if you're gonna cover Dylan? Especially the "greatest rock and roll song of all time"? Learn the words. Just an idea.
ElGato7000 Don’t play dumb. Like a Rolling Stone is a rock song. This is not a controversial or debatable question, it’s just a statement of fact.
ugh .....
Wow even lenny can sing better than dylan
