Yes, the Type XXI --- the basis for many of the submarine designs of the 1950s including the Soviet Whiskeys, Britain's Oberon class and the U.S. Tang class. The closest to a true submarine prior to the development of nuclear propulsion. Beautiful boat. Hydrodynamically streamlined, relatively clean hull, and numerous improvements over every World War II type including its snorkel gear. A significant step forward in submarine evolution.

@J Calhoun No completely wrong: These type XXI (=21) Submarines were the first for longrange underwater missions, totally innovative during ww2. Range submerged was from 340 - 480 nautical miles ... and a whopping 15100 nautical miles submerged while using the new snorkel system integrated into the design. "Just the facts jack"

The words incredibly advanced and well made immediately come to mind. Streamlining helped achieve an impressive underwater top speed. After the war she was used for various purposes before they tired of her. I assume that film, video, logs, and detailed performance data must be in existence somewhere. An illustrated book covering this sub and/or sub type would be nice.

You can clearly tell it is a very old sub due to the shape. Newer subs are generally cyclindrical in shape, with no windows. That allows them to dive to 200ft+ (max dive depths are usually classified and may be several hundred feet). The older U-boat style frequently traveled on the surface, and only made shallow dives. Check out some of the newer American and European subs. They are incredibly impressive.

The, Whisky,Romeo, Foxtrot, Echo,Juliet, Hotel class...etc. They were all the grandchildren of this late WWII German designed submarine! It was a big treasure captured by Soviet army in occupied Germany.

Also, the new US Submarines in the 1950's were constructed according to the scheme of Type XXI. Likewise the British and French submarines. For example the US Albacore, Barbel and Skipjack Class, The British Oberon Class and the French Narval class. The Germans developed up after the war from Type XXI and Type XXIII the submarines of the classes 201 to 209. 120 Submarines of this 9 after war Types were in Germany built for 17 countrys around the world. So it can not be said that the concept of Types XXI and XXIII is wrong. Please do not confuse hunter submarines with diving bases for intercontinental missiles. These are apples and oranges in comparison. But even these Nuk-boats work except for the reactor on the principle of the type XXI. USS Nautilus was the first.

The piping and valve controls look like they might be original 1944-5 vintage; obviously the electronics and most of the electrical panels are modern, as would be the crew quarters furnishings and galley equipment. During the war, the bulkheads would be bare or painted steel and not sheathed with imitation wood paneling.
