Yes, the Type XXI --- the basis for many of the submarine designs of the 1950s including the Soviet Whiskeys, Britain's Oberon class and the U.S. Tang class. The closest to a true submarine prior to the development of nuclear propulsion. Beautiful boat. Hydrodynamically streamlined, relatively clean hull, and numerous improvements over every World War II type including its snorkel gear. A significant step forward in submarine evolution.
100% analog technology, designed by engineers with slide rulers.
The superiority of the germans is evident
The outside of the sub looks modern, almost like a stealthy sub. Can't believe it is from WW2. WOW.
Look up the virginia class submarines, they are among the stealthiest ever built, and they are mostly just big cylindrical tubes.
@@p51mustang24 With the small difference that virginia class submarines have been built since the year 2000 only.
@@Mark-st7mp he probably does not got the fact that the XXI was designed around 1943... without computers.
@J Calhoun No completely wrong: These type XXI (=21) Submarines were the first for longrange underwater missions, totally innovative during ww2. Range submerged was from 340 - 480 nautical miles ... and a whopping 15100 nautical miles submerged while using the new snorkel system integrated into the design. "Just the facts jack"
@J Calhoun i see what you mean, yep the round shape is probably better underwater, quite certainly so, got off on another, seemingly not so much, or not at all intended tangent. Better streamshape for shure the ohio.
The Type XXI U-Boats were very advanced and revolutionary for their time and greatly influenced post-war submarine designs. 🇩🇪
What a stunningly beautiful sub - the engineering inside looks incredibly complicated!
Went from 300 meter depth to 400 meter depth with this one. Amazing advancement.
While it was "spec'd" for 1,000' the US captured one and the torpedo room cracked around 750 feet. The few all that went to sea all had severe quality issues.
It should be in an art museum..Clean lines. Simplistically elegant....
The words incredibly advanced and well made immediately come to mind. Streamlining helped achieve an impressive underwater top speed. After the war she was used for various purposes before they tired of her. I assume that film, video, logs, and detailed performance data must be in existence somewhere. An illustrated book covering this sub and/or sub type would be nice.
It was the most modern submarine of its time, and influenced the further history of this type of ship during the post war period.
wow, very impressive, if they would have had the industrial capacity of the US it could have been very different outcome
The quality of the crew accomodations is astonishing for the period; subs built twenty years later were barely that comfortable in many parts of the world.
The most advanced submarine technology of its time! We (The U.S.) applied a lot of their technology to our conventional submarines after the end of the war. The “retrofitted” boats were termed “GUPPy” (Greater Underwater Propulsion Power) submarines.
Amazing tour, my brother and I went up to Bremerhaven, just to tour dad boot. We live in Canada, and it was remarkable. I don’t know how anyone would want to be a submariner. On the other hand the following day we went to the Panzer Museum, and the tanks were even more cramped.
This short video made me VERY claustrophobic.....
Well, at least I didn't bump my head. The museum on the other side of the U-Boot is very good to.
Newer subs are the safest naval vessels to be on, although they are still pretty cramped. It is a difficult assignment to get, as the Navy will only assign the top of every recruit class to submarines.
Nice Blohm & Voss Product
The uk would have been in great peril if this monster had been around at the start of the war , a great piece of german engineering
The UK engineering was also better at the end of the war as well, you can't just assume only one nations technology progress (hypothetically).
intriguing music,, this boat is ancient, the photos show areas cluttered with devices but maintained well.
It looks rather futuristic from the exterior! Like a year 2030 submarine
You can clearly tell it is a very old sub due to the shape. Newer subs are generally cyclindrical in shape, with no windows. That allows them to dive to 200ft+ (max dive depths are usually classified and may be several hundred feet). The older U-boat style frequently traveled on the surface, and only made shallow dives. Check out some of the newer American and European subs. They are incredibly impressive.
Wilhelm Bauer.(U-2540)
Test depth: 240 m (790 ft)
Designed to complete a war patrol submerged from start to finish.
similer ship's name is zumwalt. 😅😅😅
@Aleksandar Milicevic came out too late... eh? 😏
@Aleksandar Milicevic Thank you for sharing with me. It's an honor to talk to a sailor!
What do you think is the current state of those missing subs? Are they sunk? Hidden? Still secretly active in german navy?
Beautiful submarine 👌
Beautiful submarine.
It’s amazing how much equipment is packed into a small space. Just think that it was all designed by hand because there were no computers back in that day.
Thank you so much for watching!
If anybody can build a DAMN good sub , it's the Germans .
Current German subs are a failure.
@@rustykilt you are a failure
Soviet submarines of cold war were heavily influenced by U2540! Especially the 1950s diesel electric generation! The, Whisky,Romeo, Foxtrot, Echo,Juliet, Hotel class...etc. They were all the grandchildren of this late WWII German designed submarine! It was a big treasure captured by Soviet army in occupied Germany.
Also, the new US Submarines in the 1950's were constructed according to the scheme of Type XXI. Likewise the British and French submarines. For example the US Albacore, Barbel and Skipjack Class, The British Oberon Class and the French Narval class. The Germans developed up after the war from Type XXI and Type XXIII the submarines of the classes 201 to 209. 120 Submarines of this 9 after war Types were in Germany built for 17 countrys around the world. So it can not be said that the concept of Types XXI and XXIII is wrong. Please do not confuse hunter submarines with diving bases for intercontinental missiles. These are apples and oranges in comparison. But even these Nuk-boats work except for the reactor on the principle of the type XXI. USS Nautilus was the first.
US made nautilus nuclear class too!
German ingeniosity! And that in 1945 !! Awesome!
The piping and valve controls look like they might be original 1944-5 vintage; obviously the electronics and most of the electrical panels are modern, as would be the crew quarters furnishings and galley equipment. During the war, the bulkheads would be bare or painted steel and not sheathed with imitation wood paneling.
She looks so beautiful!!
Thanks for watching this video
Impressive German technology for it's time!
Its so well designed. It was far ahead of the time. Like all things from that time.
Captain nemo, I have seen this type of submarine in a movie, league of extraordinary gentlemen.
The type 21 was a significant step into the future. It is a pity that an enigma machine was not on display.
An actual German sub. Cool! So much Formica- it's almost the 1970's!
Neil Bain you are wrong mate! The sub was finished to the end of WWII so 1945. In the 50s it was used to train German sub crew's. A lot of subs of the 50 American Russian and other countries where based on these design.
When the allies builded such a beauty? Not even in dreams!! But after war they stoled everything !
Thanks for all the useful information not supplied..
What kind of information do you need?
Visiting is on my 'To Do' list once the "ruling class" politicians are forced to drop the COVID-19 travel restrictions and return the world to normal.
It spent almost 30 years in service with the West German navy after WW2.
Unbelievable!
Alfred Juul
@addictive object *.* it,s from ww2
@addictive object *.* it can run under water 22kn and have larger batteries and can dive for more days.
These Electro boats were so much ahead of their time! If they had come in to use two or three years earlier the outcome of the battle of the Atlantic would have been different!
Against endless manufacturing ,i think not.It would have only prolonged the event end!
Hows that vodka comrade?
Jim Allen I haven't seen so much BS...based on so much wrong data. I would say that you may need some pills. I was in Russia not long ago. Shitty life altogether. Shame on Russia to allow it.
dew free just cant deal with the fact that things could have gone differently can you
Just imagine them with rocket launchers. Would wreak havoc on US eastern coast.
First i look. Is it some new submarine, awesome! German engineering.
I was inside a U.S. museum a long time ago and I think it was similar to this one in that all the wires, pipes, valves, etc. looked chaotic as if designed as it was being built. As long as it works and can be serviced I guess.
No! The one in Chicago museum is NOT like this one.
Engineered and Produced in 1945 by the germans... again far ahead all other countries. Awesome!
But behind where it mattered.
A monument to German Engineerimg.
Nice picture what are the capabilities of the sub and is it stealthy
I have been there and seen it. Imagine - it was raised from the Baltic seabed in 1955!
Quite a step up from the previous class
Germany the best of the world
from a far away galaxy
Hermoso, creación de la gran Alemania
Amazing GERMAN MILITARY ENGINEERING GREAT STRUCTURAL DESIGNE
Amazing Sub and it would put Current Russian Subs to shame! Oh yea they are far more advanced but they look rough!
Far king amazing ! It looks like a space craft . Well it is really isn’t it ? Just swap the propulsion system for the V2 and there it is !
Seen in size similar to the Japanese imperial submarine type i-400, the first aircraft submarine in the world, in the deck there are 3 Kawasaki M6A1 warplanes allied code names: seiran, equipped with runway slingshots and automatic cannon type 96.
What year is this one for the from?
Submarine of the future got sent to the past
salute for germany teknology from malaysia
Looks hi tech even today
back in the 1950s this german type 21 was supposed to get the Otto Hahn type mini nuclear reactor as 1rst german nuclear powered sub but the allies forbid it. So the germany installed the miniaturized AEG reactor in a cargo ship the Otto Hahn. Us made nautilis was a copy of the type 21 and got a mini nuclear reactor by GE.
It looks pretty advanced on the outside but very cramped and dated on the inside.
mike Si it's a sub . what did you expect ?
Lots of wood!
Nice
Cool
It's funny how these subs could dives so damn deep vs the American counterparts.
its only sleeping, only sleeping :)
🤩
💙
Great
Amazing technology for its time. If the Kriegsmarine had the Type XXI, the Luftwaffe had the Me-262 and the Heer had the Stg-44 in 1942 Germany would have won the war easily.
No it wouldn't have, and Nazi Germany wasn't the only Nation fighting on the axis powers side anyway lol, winning the war overall wasn't up to just them, but they lost for several more important key factors than just technology, the massive use of pervitin by both the military and hitler being one of them
Germany started loosing when they could not knock Britain out of the fight and stepped onto Russian soil.....it was not technology that would save you unless you got the atom bomb of which you were well behind.
Looks like the Nautilus from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Wie viel kostet das U-Boot? Ich nehme ein
And apparently the crew was sustained by Swedish 'Wasa' crispbread. @1:17
Lata de sardinha. Só os bravos suportam embarcar nisso.
They build them good I. Germany,,ya...
Just one cramped toilet for the whole crew?
way nicer than the Russian one Ive just watched thats in the Medway.
Thanks for watching
Between radar advancements, German insistence on lots of radio traffic (huff-duff vulnerability), and a cracked naval code, the U-boat war was lost even with these cutting edge submarines. But those guys just kept going to sea and fought until the end not knowing about these things.
A good response. huff Duff was another great invention.
Sea wolf....
50 years ahead tech
I WANT ONE!!!! Phil S in California
How much?
I WAS IN THAT SUBMARINE TOGETHER WITH MY FIRST COUSIN MY PARENTS
DAS good
Nauczyciel: Jak masz na imię?
Ja :Nie pytają cię o imię walczą z ostrym cieniem mgły
No showers on these U boats? It must have smelled pretty bad inside.
Subs were known as PIG BOATS...
What ‘s the music
Last Vision
Seiner Zeit min 20 Jahre voraus
Captain Nemo.
DAS BOOT!!!
Ww2?!!!!incredible
Keren
Now that would've been a game changer!
