    So basically, a single Hive is the entire population of Earth, crammed into an area the size of two Mt. Everests stacked on top of each other, filled with mutants and so shitty to live in, it makes Eritrea look like a paradise.

      That would be pretty cool, Killing mutants in the underhive and just being a jerk to people on the lower to mid levels as part of the arbites.It would be an awesome looking setting. That sort of game would make a good RPG as well if you could pick how you want to play. Become a crime kingpin or a heretic or something.
      Was thinking management would be fun though. Squashing mutant rebelions, making sure you have enough food, plages killing people in the lower levels, having trade routs cut off by enemy space ships, Hive quakes, erning enough favour with the Imperium government to reques support for different things, expanding your hive, acquiring Standard Template Construct, choosing what to manurfacture, pollution levels, building relationships with other planets, making shady deals with ailens like the tau or eldar behind the Imperiums back, exterminating chaos followers, deciding to be a good leader for you people or a tyrannical overlord, Invasions, character assassinations..... The list keeps going of things that could be in there. The more I think about it, the more I want it lol

      Here is the problem. You still see land, and can GET to the ground/land under a Hive City. Hive Cities are SMALL compared to planets like Coruscant and Nar Shadaa. It's been OVER 50k years since anyone has even seen hints of the ground on Coruscant. Nar Shadaa is similarly over built. Hive Cities are like the first cell of a true City Planet on the scale of Coruscant.
      Nar Shadaa even has gangs that produce things that are honestly far worse than Servitors. Servitors are mind wiped and no longer aware. The slaver gangs are known for kidnapping people for the sole purpose of turning them into living droids. You are awake, aware, fully concious and perfectly able to think. You feel everything just fine. However, a droid brain is in total control of your movement and uses your mouth to speak for itself giving you no way to communicate with the outside world. So you feel whatever the droid does to your body. Living a complete personal hell, never able to communicate with anyone (not even the droid brain), forced to witness whatever the droid uses your body for with no means to even attempt to take control back.

    Considering the Batman-concept. There has been similar cases, where Batman actually managed that .Of course, in terms of fighting, he would be ash in a few seconds. So, with him spawning in the underhive he would be dead. Just as he would be if spawning random in gotham.
    But Bruce Wayne would get shit done. Think, a noble. Rich even by their standards. Utterly philantropic, while looking so idealistic, that no one thinks of him as a threat. Now, give this noble the gear and training of the most aggressive inquisitors out there, with a tactical and political understanding that would make St. Drusus envious even from the grave. Now, to explain this, it will of course take a quite lengthy expression (which is of course just a best case scenario).
    Batman never stopped crime in gotham. He stops the supervillains, yes, but the actual decrease in crime was done by Bruce Wayne, with the help of Batman. Batman allowed him to gain the knowledge and proof Bruce Wayne needed to fight the corruption. And of course, he scared the "better" leaders to become more corrupt
    So all that he really had to do, at least in a hive in 40k, is, to expose the corruption of the nobles. Easy for Batman. And since the only reason, the nobles are not burned at stake for beeing corrupt is simply, that it is unbelievable that a highborn could be a bad person; once it would be shown, the Adeptus Arbites or the Ministronum would take a huge interest in seeing those heretics die in the most cruel way possible.
    With that out of the way, living standards start increasing. Corruption is decreased and, having bought most of the lost property of the heretics, the main industry is now lead by a genius. And the nobles not killed are of course scared. Not by the bat beating them up, but making them lose their riches.
    Now, beeing a smart guy, Wayne wouldnt let the rest of the Imperium know that, it would instantly increase taxes. And beeing the Batman it isnt realyl his job to scare the various mutations and monsters, thats more or less impossible. But, with the increasing living standards, Wayne provides the carrot, while Batman provides the stick for the various low lifes, making legal work more attractive then crime. And the underhive would simply slowly but surely die out. After all, waste can be reduced and with a working economy, the proper Adeptus Arbites can get rolling. Let by a crazed millionaire, who, with all the shit going down in the hive, probably has an army of Robins made out of the various orphans, they could slowly take ground. And something that (granted, most often by the writers) is overlooked: Batmans no-kill rule is no moral codex, its a trauma. Technicly, crippling someone beyond beeing able to life is totally possible. And imposing extremly harsh, almost dictatorial conditions simply to hold a higher living standard is also totally possible.

    There is an exception to being able to defend an Imperial Hive from a numerically inferior foe. In Deadmen Walking, a Necon tomb awake in the middle of an Imperial Hive and quickly overwhelmed its defenders. Apparently, the Necron solution to taking the Hive was quite simple... demolish it. They literally gutted the entire hive creating a massive crater of collapsed buildings. I personally enjoyed that book since it gave us a good glimpse of the Death Korps of Krieg.

      And he described it has a duck hunt, '' You don't want to shoot the one in the front because then the rest will flee, You shoot the one in the back then move your way up.''

      +93Avenger93 yeah, I know that. But I just want to see Joker bring his clown goons into another gangs territory, thinking he would be able to deal with them like in the comics and batman show up to deal with it and well....
      Esher: blow both of them apart with flame throwers and autoguns + their ratlin compatriots.
      Van Sarr: turns them to piles of goo with plasma and other advanced tech.
      Pretty much they would get brutalised, but I just want to see their reaction. Plus it will train the gangers I need for the guardsmen regiments. We have a planet full of xeno, mutant, sorcerer pony pony (I think that's what their called) here.
      (Raises bolt pistol to your head (you have 2 options. 1.Do not speak of this or the Inquatision and I, will deal with you. Or 2.You join the regiment and help deal with the xeno scum) choose wisely)

      Plus the romance between her and the joker would be hilarious. Instead of Harley always trying to please/siduse joker and him being unotticing/uncaring. This one would be the joker running for his life as mad Donna tried to cave his head in. The women of Esher can be a bitch at 99% of times.

    Difficult to think of 40k history when I think of human history in AD terms. 2000 years since the Romans and look how much history has occurred. Now imagine settled worlds colonies growing from “the Martian” style habitats to hive cities. 38k worth of future history. That’s why I love warhammer 40k Heck Star Trek was only 300 odd so years into the future lol

  • @naoura4939
    @naoura4939 Před 8 lety +2

    Now I'm wondering if there are Hive worlds strictly designed for building Hives. That amount of material would not be easy to produce, and you would want the resources of that planet to be dedicated to something OTHER than constructing a Hive, so that would mean you would want someone else to "build" the Hive, and then assemble it on site. An Ikea city, if you will.
    That would take care of practically the entire city, while the Underhive would form out of the undesirables simply getting hemmed into an area together. Nowhere else for them to go, so they make their own damned city.

    Great stuff. 40k is my favorite IP, and stuff like this is the reason. The imagination runs wild when one thinks about it. The whole time you were talking I was thinking about writing a story, or running a tabletop RPG. The problem with the former is anything I would write having to do with 40k would probably be labeled either pornography or obscene, which would preclude it from obtaining any kind of licensing. The fact is that the true 40k universe is absolutely vile, and if it were to be told in that way, most people would find it incredibly offensive and unfit for all but a small segment of the population. The Japanese would probably dig it, though.
    I'd love to write a story about an inquisitor hunting down a cabal of heretics dedicated to Slaanesh in the lower hives. Classic 41st millennium detective story mixed with "se7en" style perversion and horror. Add in some Lovecraft and you have a truly twisted tale.

    'Space Marine: Enter the Hive'. (Counting on you THQ).
    ...Maybe the plot could be that the major underhive gangs have all joined up without reason (heresy expected; tyranid infiltration feared -spoiler: it's a dark eldar ..pretending to be a disillusioned eldar seer?) and they've taken charge of a powerplant. They then threaten to use it as a bomb if their demands aren't met (better living conditions, the head governor, more weapons, etc, etc) ...When in reality the dark eldar plans to use it to build a warpgate (or distraction, depending on how things work out).
    ...Or shorten the scope a bit into; 'inquisitor gets sent to investigate heresy.. Turns out it's xenos ..and not even the expected kind'. I'm thinking open world (3-4 blocks; dozen apartments; crapton of tunnels; main finale building; torture room; etc), item shops and hidden upgrade rooms, investigative shooter. ..With enemy territories to flip (mutants, gangs, etc) over to the arbites.. And subjects to 'question' (get X to arbite station for interrogations.. -their rank and information determine how furiously the gangs chase after them). ...And a grappling hook/gun (because those are nice/rooftops are fun to snipe from).
    Edit: Grapple gun that can be used in combat? -like pulling enemies off opposite street rooftops/apartment windows?

    • @McFrager
      @McFrager Před 8 lety

      Cousin Skeeter I can picture it; Mix matched groups of guardsmen, hive punks, and random citizens working together.. Bullets whizzing this way and that. Explosions. Pull back; a brother captain, alone except for a handful of arbites, overseeing the recruitment trials of a couple dozen hopefuls. The sound of bolter fire filling the mock city block as the training servitors fight for their survival ..A hopeless but useful thought.. The smallest hint of a smile forming on the brother captains face -another good selection. The trainees kill the last servitors and claim the bunker flag. Victory. Arbites start clapping; The brother captain just beginning his speech~ Red lights fill the room as the sirens begin..
      The story being played out with him taking a group of recruits with him (he thinks the situation is far less than it is) and often leaving them alone together to work out their mission on their own -combat training. ..Also, he'd rather they survive/get out of his way (their second 'mission' accidentally leads them back to him ..well, a little roughed up and with fewer members).
      ..Though i'd definitely want it to end with most of the hive's citizens thinking "Did a space marine with a rag tag group murder a whole bunch of people for no reason? Why didn't the arbites handle it!?!" -you know, a big 'ole blackmark for both the chapter and government.. -possibly inciting future chaos cult..

      tigerhunter77 Definitely. I mean, the homeworld of the Ultrasmurfs did -which is probably filled with hive cities.. There's even a story (can't find it now) of one being shelled to dust by a loyalist chapter (either it took 6 days; 6 weeks; or 6 months ..can't remember).. And i'm pretty sure that was just regular old mutiny/couping.

    Re last part about battles: this is where Titans come in. The reason they are such a big deal is because a Titan Legion has the armour to survive the defences and the firepower to breach the walls.
    I'm the recent game Space Marine, the Imperium put off orbital bombardment and sent in the Ultra Marines just to recover one Titan, they are that important.

      James Palmer Hmm i remember vaguely playing something like that with my cousin quite a long time ago but aside from that it doesen't ring any bells really.. But yeah would be interesting to see something like that, star wars 1313 was going to be a gritty story about the dark and miserable lower levels of the planet wide city called coruscant, but alas like some other sw games i'd have liked to seen it got canned and left to rot. Prey 2 would have perhaps been something worth seeing aswell, i'd like to see some more gritty and dark scifi / fantasy games in the future, the most recent scifi titles like the newer Halos, Destiny, Titanfall, CoD AW etc. are not really to my tastes, the artstyle is too clean the setting too simple and generic, besides i can't even remember when was the last time we got a decent scifi RPG, last one i remember must have been KoTOR.
