What a rich resource Alex is for anyone in youth development. A wonderful balance of empathy and investment with practical guidance.
I think that the priciples applied by the LCF coaching staff (from academy to senior level) can be applied in our day to day and not just in football. I think back to "kids" rocking up to first year of tertiary studies in top end cars and what their attitudes and outlook on life was.
I'm fascinated by this guy. I have rarely seen someone seem so trustworthy, unpretentious and selfless.
It sounds like professional ballet training in that it takes 10 years to create a professional ballet dancer. As a former professional ballerina and a ballet educator, I found this conversation fascinating. Iâm a Red through and through, and I found this conversation refreshing. You clearly are very thoughtful regarding the development not just of the footballer, but of the âkidsâ as decent people. I applaud you for your work.
Itâs not always the ones with the natural talent early, as they donât have to really work for it. I love how honest you are about what you know and donât know. It sounds as though you are a very nurturing coach. I had very demanding Russian teachers who were not gentle and nurturing. As a teacher I felt that being nurturing and encouraging went a lot farther. No wonder that you help to create great footballers. Thank you for this wonderful conversation! đ

I think what Alex described at the 41 min mark about how ex-players take interest in the U-11,12,15 - that is the Liverpool way.

We all feel like this our club and we connected even sat at home watching the game . Its not just the club we support its literally our club. Runs right through our very being and we proud as .... Up the reds. YNWA
loved the 'Son test'. it's like he re-evaluated his thinking and raised his level of awareness of the standards that should be set for the kids.
From digesting this, itâs probably easier to pass selection for the UK special forces. Elite mindset at youth level đ€Ż
Going to be interesting to see how we progress next season and beyond with a new coaching team under Slot. To have the manager step down is game changing, especially someone like Klopp, but to have a lot of the training team step down too is huge!

I wonder how many times at liverpool academy or any club academy where young players get to play with older players. I feel that playing with older players quite a lot stretches you when you need it. One of the things i think the game has suffered is the disappearance of reserve team football.
If possible interview someone from the Manchester City academy. Itâd be fascinating to hear them speak about Phil and Cole

Man city have no fans it's just not gonna do well. Sorry to break it to you but we all know what that club really is.
Sure they won't mention being drug cheats.
Maybe get one of the Legal or accountancy team from City on, they seem to be the highest performing part of the club.

LFC needs coaches like Alex. Youth players get hyped up a lot by the media and then they start to believe in the hype; coaches like Alex keeps the youth grounded. Of course hype is a double edged sword; if it spurs the youth player to work even harder then great but most of the time, it does the complete opposite. Phil Foden is one young player that younger players ought to look up to.

Re liverpool efl final. There were 5 academy lads in the squad, only one in the actual team.
Really hate the question on "individualism". Just gave the impression Alex and LFC academy are trying to limit it
Can't that be a bad thing to limit individualism. Its a difficult job to maintain the fine balance between team work and individualism. But you need both don't you?
I don't like how he doesn't know how to spot the talent nobody seems to be talking about this.
The secret? If you systematically scout thousands of players with potential you are gonna have a few actually good enough ONCE IN A WHILE. It's pure coincidence through scouting not education. By the time the U10 is U15, it's a different bunch of players.
Never seen such a lack of understanding of football and development in one comment, you can have the player with the most talent not succeed with the wrong application, the wrong environment, we have many talented young players on the verge of senior football not just because we scout well, but because we educate well in the right environment to foster development and have open pathways from u10 to senior football.
Also, let's not forget PEDs.
Tell me you've never been through or have worked in a Prem academy without telling me you've never done it. I had far better players than I ever was who never made it due to attitude and diet/fitness, something that's drilled into you from a very young age. That being said the year I spent at United they where also big on ensuring the right attitude was the most important thing. Educating younger players on the complete package of what it takes, not just raw skill, is a vital path to making it to the first team and more importantly staying there.
