This was a pleasant surprise!! 😂
Thanks for the shoutout Drew, much appreciated.
I will add that this is generally the first song by The Contortionist I’ll show people but its kind of a primer to see what they are all about. For example, their latest album, Clairvoyant, has basically no screaming on it but their older albums are heavier and more untraditionally structured.
I would recommend you check out the song “Flourish” next. I think that’ll be the song you will truly appreciate what this band can do.
P.S. - saw someone mention you reacting to Tesseract and that should definitely happen asap. “Nocturne”, “Hexes” or “Survival” are great starting songs for Tesseract
    Cheers!!

The Contortionist was primarily a deathcore band before this album, and since this album, has primarily been a spacey/shoegazey prog rock band. This album fairly literally marks their transition, as it really marked their move towards that predominantly prog rock sound, but still has those deathcore bits as well. Their next album after this one ditches that metal sound almost completely, and goes straight prog rock.
You were wondering what set this band apart from other prog juggernauts when you were listening to the first part of the first song. For me, I love the atmospheric/spacey aesthetic of their music. I think their take on the soft/smooth post-rock sound is unique and interesting. When I first listened to this album, I was instantly hooked on this sound, and just couldn't find anything else that scratched the same itch for me.
