    Whenever Yugi summons Slifer, the duel often starts revolving around adding more cards in his hand to make Slifer stronger. Imagine if on top of that, there is also a chance that he draws Exodia while drawing more cards.

    • @hp2546
      @hp2546 Před 10 měsíci +12

      Last time when Yugi had Exodia, direct attacks never existed in any duel monsters. But when Kaiba's tournament changed the rules, direct attacks do exists. So a duelist with Exodia also have weakness based on what was shown what happened to Seeker the rare hunter. His only weakness is he is wide open for direct attacks. Seeker was able to draw Exodia successfully because Joey did not know he had Exodia. Yugi on the other hand figured out Seeker had Exodia based on his behaviors so when Yugi saw that behavior, he most likely knew that was his previous self. So if Seeker were playing duel monster using duelist kingdom rules, then Seeker would of had a field advantage because his opponent cannot use direct attacks and must wait for him to put a monster down on the field no matter what. Yugi had already had a chance to win that Exodia cards from that rare hunter but he chose Red Eyes Black Dragon instead.

      It is clear that when Yugi loses Exodia, he won't end up like Seeker the rare hunter. I mean Exodia was a field advantage during that time because direct attacks did not exist. When Kaiba created his tournament, rules did change where direct attacks are common. If Yugi's opponent knows he have Exodia, then they will create a goal of attacking Yugi before he had a chance to draw them or if they see an opening for a direct attack, they would of cashed in. So having Yugi with no Exodia helped him focus more on Dark Magician because if he still had Exodia, he may not have room to sacrifice 2 monsters to summon Dark Magician. I mean what was seen with Seeker is he could not even make room to sacrifice 2 monsters to summon Red Eyes Black Dragon. Or what if Yugi's opponent had card destruction in his/her deck. Any of them would of force Yugi to discard every hand including his Exodia piece and draw a new cards. Exodia is only weak when it is not summoned.

    You can really tell Exodia was designed for that one duel (second in the manga) where Kabuki Takahashi brought Magic & Wizards back by popular demand, but at the time he would have been writing that duel (Spring 1997), the idea that the card game would become the main fixture of the manga was still nowhere on his or his editor's radar. So making an auto win-condition without having to grapple with its presence for future duels is what happened.
    I think it's very telling that Exodia is neither seen nor mentioned in the video tape duel with Pegasus (published in December 1997/January 1998), not even one piece; I'd be willing to bet Takahashi and his editor remembered or were reminded of Exodia around that time, and Weevil/Haga was created not just as another nasty piece of work villain-of-the-week like so many to that point, but as a plot point to get it outta here so actual drama and tension, and changing cards, could be winged from Yugi's future duels.
    Of course, the real reason we hardly ever see Exodia again is aptly demonstrated by the Rare Hunter duel - it's not exciting to watch when the desk is designed around it. It's telling that when we DO get a dedicated Exodia deck again in Season 3 of GX, its two duels involve all manner of convoluted anime-only tech cards to restrict hand size and dump hands playing off the "he's one card away!" tension in a different manner than real life. And neither duel wins that way - Aster blocks it with a hand-size-to-four trap and we get a new Exodia boss monster instead that wins in the first, and in the second, we flip between going for Exodia to a backup strategy when it's hard countered, to back to Exodia, only for Yubel to win via the Grinder Golem/tribute for Yubel/attack and bounce the damage to opponent before the final piece could be drawn.

Also, the word counterfeit is twice more used the next episode, first after Seeker plays the head and later before Yugi tears up the cards, making it seem less likely to be an error (and furthermore, it wouldn't be in-character for Yugi to tear up cards just because they're marked, as he believes in cards having a soul. Counterfeit cards however are a different story).

    Having Exodia represent Solomon, the way Blue Eyes represents Kaiba and Dark Magician represents Yugi, makes me feel kinda torn on the subject of what would've happened if he hadn't lost it. On the one hand, losing it basically speedran that entire character arc you talked about where Yugi had to learn to grow on his own as a duelist and develop his own strategies - notably, before losing Exodia it's "my grandpa's deck" but after losing it it becomes "my deck." On the other hand, I would really have loved to see some interaction between Exodia and the EGCs; we even see in the Millennium World arc that Exodia is Siamun's ka, ans was once a fearsome and legendary protector of the land. The anime probably would've pulled out some kind of logic for Exodia not working against the EGCs, maybe that hierarchy system they mentioned with Ra being above the other 2. But, I think writers would definitely be able to integrate a plot-point of Yami’s reliance on Exodia. In fact, said reliance on drawing the 5 pieces could have been the very thing that cost Yami his duel with Rapheal.
    This could have consequently triggered a character arc where he becomes a more violent Duelist, angry with himself while grieving the loss of Yugi to the Seal of Orichalcos. However, he would be gradually calmed down by his friends, decide to practice not using Exodia-never even drawing a single piece when he did-and understand how he can make things right again.

Seeing Exodia break out of the Spellbinding Circle, the three Legendary Knights on the field maybe Dark Magician Girl as he obliterates Geh and Dartz? That would have been amazing! I actually think that Exodia would not necessarily be the be-all win condition for Yugi's deck in Duelist Kingdom like you said, precisely for the ruling that he needed to play monsters each turn. Considering that he has a large amount of Spells & Traps in his deck for that era, there's gonna likely be a chance where he'll have no cards on the field, and the only monsters he can play being those Forbidden Limbs.
    That scenario you described at 5:59 would be surprising at first sure, but both Pegasus & Yugi would quickly surmise that while he _could_ draw the head for an early win, he could also brick into a Magical Hats or Living Arrow without any other monsters remaining on his field, which considering Pegasus' Toon Beatdown strategy was very likely! And without any graveyard-to-hand recovery, the moment one of them hits the field turns his five instant-win cards into some of his weakest monsters - I don't even think the Head could take out more than, what, Toon Alligator?

    I think there's one thing that is missing from the Duelist Kingdom discussion: yes, you could stall out the duel by simply setting one and passing until you draw Exodia, but every time you set a monster you lose a card from your hand. Let's say Yugi had 3 pieces of Exodia and 2 other monsters in his hand, let's assume they are Curse of Dragon and Summoned Skull. If he wanted to go for the Exodia gameplan, he'd have to set either Curse or Skull on the field, losing him a card from his hand. Next turn, he draws up to 5 again, hitting another monster, so far so good.
    However, when he eventually draws another piece of Exodia, he has to hold onto it, effectively limiting his available handsize to 1 monster. Problematic, but still not impossible to come back from, you still have a monster you can set and he's probably drawing another one next turn. But what if, when his effective handsize is 1, he hits a spell/trap (Or the BLS ritual)? The only way out would be to set a piece of Exodia to avoid an instant loss, which throws the instant win right out the window.
    I'd argue it wouldn't be a clean sweep for Yugi, as the Exodia bricks would clog up his hand and there's a non-zero chance that he'd have an hand with no summonable monsters besides Exodia pieces. Of course cards like Pot of Greed could replenish his hand and the "luck boost" provided by the Puzzle could help him, but from a deckbuilding standpoint it would be a Joey Wheeler level gamble.

    I have an alternate take on the final duel that could completely change the emotional dynamic of things.
    The entire duel proceeds exactly how it went originally, up until the penultimate turn. Atem attacks with Dark Magician, Yugi plays Spell Textbook, and subsequently draw-plays Card of Sanctity. Yugi draws his cards, and reveals his Silent Magician's effect when Atem draws his cards.Atem still plays his Magician's Unite to keep himself in the game despite Silent Magician destroying Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl.
    However, it would be at this moment where Atem flips the scripts. It is after the damage step concludes that Atem has either tears in his eye, or a look of disappointment, or something to cause emotional turmoil. He concedes the "true" victory to Yugi for all the comebacks and counters he'd come up with, but claims the physical victory. Since this is the anime and this play/draw was mid-battle, it would be after his Magicians are destroyed that Atem reveals that Yugi's Card of Sanctity play allowed him to draw the five Exodia cards (plus Magicians Unite).
    Just imagine the reactions from Yugi and the on-screen spectators.

    1. What if Joey beat Marik? (An obvious one)
    2. What if Zero Reverse never happened?
    3. What if Crow was a Dark Signer (the writers original plan)
    4. What if Kaiba never became Kaiba? (As in if Gozaburo never adopted him and Mokuba)
    5. What if Kaiba died? (If he killed himself at Duelist Kingdom)
    6. What if Lightning Lied? (Was what Lightning showed Ai after his death was a true reality like it believed to be true or was it a cunning manipulation tactic to drive Ai to his death.
    7. What if Duel Monsters never existed?
    8. What if Atem never left?
    9. What if there was an undiscovered Ritual Dimension?
    10. What if Bakura won?
    What do think? These are just some on the top of my head. This could be a regular series like your duel analysis vids.

    The thing is, from what we know about ‘that’ rare hunter from Battle City, more than one set of Exodia existed - at least four sets as Yugi had one set, and ‘that’ rare hunter had a play set of all Exodia pieces. It’s entirely possible it’s a Blue Eyes situation, where there’s only four in existence, BUT if that’s not the case, there’s no reason why Yugi couldn’t just replace them with another set of Exodia once Weevil tossed them
    That said, a Yu-Gi-Oh! Timeline where Yugi builds a deck around Exodia (Magical Library, Upstart Goblin etc) and uses his immense luck to troll everyone constantly would be amazing

  • @coherentramblings7326
    @coherentramblings7326 Před 9 měsíci

    I imagine that if Yugi has Exodia from Battle City onwards, instead of using Exodia as a separate deck, we’d see a bunch of cards that blend Yugi’s regular strategy with stalling or drawing. He runs a bunch more kuriboh’s and Big Shield Gardnas, he has cards that let him draw if Dark Magician’s on the field, etc.
    Also, the anime specifically says the Egyptian Gods are stronger than Exodia, so I can imagine a scene proving this where Yugioh gets the five pieces while Obelisk is on the field, but Exodia just kind of fades away, and we get a monologue explaining that each Egyptian God can negate Exodia’s win con.

  • @KingChiggy
    @KingChiggy Před rokem

    I think it would have been SO amazing if in the ceremonial duel Yugi actually used Exodia and won. We have him building his deck and he actually turns down Kaiba's offer to use all of his cards, but instead we have Solomon there as well, and he takes Yugi aside that night and is like "I spent all of this time collecting the pieces of Exodia to finish my old deck, and I know this is the most important duel of your life, so I want to give them to you to use in this game". It would have given yugi more of a connection with his grandpa, and actually having Yugi be the one to draw what he needs at the end of the duel instead of Atem, who might have had all 3 god cards on the board at that point and been in a completely undefeatable board would have been a nice way to close the duel instead of...making up a new ruling for cards to cheese the win for Yugi. Plus having Atem's first win be with the power of Exodia and his last duel end with him being beaten by Exodia would be a nice bookend. Yugi could then give Exodia back to his grandpa and be like "This is the power that banished my other half. I never want to use it again." and then he goes on to revamp his old strategies that he used with Atem into the DSoD deck we see in that movie. Or even better he decides that after that event he is retiring, and decides to start developing other games himself (which would fuel Kaiba's anger more for the movie as well).

    I think the craziest what if scenario for Yu-Gi-Oh is what if Joey beat Marik. He would get Ra. Yugi still beats Kaiba. And we know that Joey beat Yugi at the end of battle city to get Red Eyes back. And Yugi had all 3 God cards. So after the finals Joey could have 2 or maybe even all 3 god cards.

      We don't know that since the requirement to get Red-Eyes back was Joey to become a true duelist and it was more-or-less implied in both the manga and anime that Joey wasn't on Atem's level. In fact, in the anime when Joey offered to fight Atem in the final duel, everyone said he would be stomped including Yugi. It was never stated he had to win. And Joey can't used the gods since he has no connection to Egypt or the Millennium Items.

    So here's an additional point to that: with duelist Kingdom rules, if you have Exodia, why not make a deck solely out of monsters? That way you can stall the game and garuntee that you either draw a piece of exodia, or draw a stall card. Maybe Pot of Greed if that's legal in the anime, but basically just defense and literally chained god

    Two things: The first was when you mentioned that all Yugi has to do is keep stalling with monsters until he draws all 5 pieces. But in order for that to work, his opponent can't have any upper hand otherwise Yugi would certainly lose, because either he keeps drawing regular monsters or Exodia pieces, if he's drawing monsters he won't get to Exodia, and if he's drawing pieces he won't win, since he needs them in his hand he can't summon them to keep the duel going, and he's going to eventually run out of monsters to defend himself.
    The second was Pegasus. He knows Yugi has Exodia so all he has to do is either have Card Destruction in his deck or come up with a one of a kind card that stops Exodia.

So Yami draws each piece of Exodia, explaining to Weevil that he doesn't even need the might of the forbidden one to squash a bug like him.

    As annoying as weevil was, this added stakes. Yugi just beat the duel monsters world champion and the viewer had no experience yet with the advanced rules. Yugi needed a reason that he could potentially lose to the people on the island, and having the deck that just beat the world champ would kill stakes.

    I kinda wish we got a joke series of Yugi having Exodia in his deck and learning to use the Pharaos powers right away to just top deck it every duel, imagine him smirking vs pegasus as pegasus takes a peak into his hand seeing all 5 exodia pieces as Yugi is about to reveal his opening hand. (I know there's been made some joke short videos of something like this) but yeah just a whole speedrun series where yugi opens exodia every single duel. Alternatively just a meme version of him doing insane emotional damage every duel with exodia with a few occurrences of opening hand exodias for hilarious effect. (obviously it would be condenses the entire first season down to like maybe 12-36 episodes of just duels.) Just all the in duel trash talk would be gold if Yugi finished all duels in a few turns or less with Exodia XD
