- Welcome to version differences! The series where we take two or more of the same game from different regions or versions and compare and contrast!
Today we're looking at Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment system. We will be looking at the American, PAL, Japanese, and Super System versions of the game.

The All-Stars version of Super Mario World had a few major differences, like a whole new sprite layout for Luigi.
That and All Stars + World has an extra save file to be consistent with the amount of save files of other Super Mario Bros games in All Stars. Other than that, it's identical to the regular Super Mario World.
Someone should do Version Differences between this video and the original version.
That's what i was thinking
The old one had josh say kawai
2:55 - What? The feature is very useful there. You can use your cape to spin blocks and move through them instead of having to fling an enemy at them.
Also, you can totally use it to get the secret exit. Just grab the keep and fly jump up to where the keyhole is. You can't glide but you still get the super jump while holding items. It's a little tricky but not that hard really.
Great video, though there are a few things about the PAL version you missed:
1. The timing of the crushers in the Iggy's Castle's auto scrolling section is very different - You can no longer keep to the very right-hand edge when the crushers strike, as you will be crushed.
2. Two versions of the game were released in PAL countries: Version 1.0 and 1.1, with the difference being V1.1 displays the bottom row of tiles hidden on all other versions by using all 239 lines on PAL systems. (V1.1 is also the version released on the Wii Virtual Console and featured in SMAS+SMW PAL). If I'm not mistaken, V1.1 also fixes the overworld palette glitch with Chocolate Island 3 when exiting the stage by jumping off Yoshi.
3. Mario's movement speed was increased in the PAL version compered to either NTSC version (this is even noticeable in real-time). This affects what jumps are possible, particularly when speedrunning the game (though other things weren't changed, so NTSC-J is still fastest).
V1.1 also had a unique Luigi sprite instead of just the color swap, right?
I didn't know you could re-enter castles...
Carlos Bonilla Me too. Just tried it out today and was completely surprised it worked.
Then I feel sorry for you.. :(
Carlos Bonilla Me neither
Bet you also didn't know that there's a button combination on the title screen of SMB1 that lets you continue from the world you died on
@@wildcard13294 That I knew... I grew up playing that game (and SMB3). However, I never had a Super Nintendo, so I had never played Super Mario World until like 8 years ago when I had downloaded it from the Virtual Console onto my Wii (before dis-continuing playing video games all together until a few weeks ago when I finally returned to playing my Wii again). Therefore, I never knew the secrets of Super Mario World (besides stumbling online across the secret exit to the 1st ghost house which allows you to get Yoshi and infinite lives). Now I will have to go back into the game and try re-entering a "destroyed" castle!!
I love the music when Mario arrives to the goal. It is unforgetable.
One of the cool things about the exit counter on the title screen not having the ★is that you can get it to go above 96 exits by getting glitched exits. If you do it in the American version, it stay 96★ even if you get 97+ exits.
Squiggs 【Glitches - ROM Hacks - Speedruns】 which are the glitched exits?
Your videos about Version Differences are very good, I'm sharing them, you deserve more public. :)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed.
JoshKall Thanks to you for making them. :)
First played Super Mario World back in December of 1991 or on the launch day the SNES came out in North America. Wow what an experience it was. The game still holds up well today with how it looks, controls, level design and sound effects. I didn't know about some of these differences.
Hey, just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your content. Hope you get more subscribers!
1:10 I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT DID THIS!!!!
The Nintendo Super System? I actually remember that thing. Many, many, MANY years ago. I was vacationing in Florida with my family and I happened to decide to head into a local arcade. Inside, they had one of those things, so I decided to play it. I think I already owned all the games that were on the system, anyway, but it was cool to see that something like that existed.
The Neverending Twilight I remember there being a Super Mario 3 arcade game at a grocery store growing up.
*They have them in cinemas and bowling alleys in England actually!* 💡
This is a much better vid. Thanks! You are super player!!
I just subbed, this channel should have more subscribers
Would love to see a deep dive into the GBA differences!
Now do a Version Differences on "Version Differences - Super Mario World"
And do version differences on the comments too.
Almost the perfect Mario game, just a tad easy, still my favourite.
with so much levels it can get tedious. just perfect
Ya left out the SMB All Stars + SMW cartridge! In that version of SMW Luigi has a different appearance compared to Mario. He looks skinny instead of just having a green outfit.
3:14 - agree with not eating the dolphins? Nope. You blew it. Eating dolphins is FUN. YEAH! FUN!
Finally a version without Fernando.
Nice videos, imlove these kind of things in videogames, you should do them about the different ports of resident evil games (1, 2, 3)
HOW DID JOSHKALL MESS THIS UP SO BADLY?!?!?!?!?!?!(Sorry for all caps)
My older brother received Super Mario World on the release of the SNES here in the UK, his version definitely had the yellow 96 with the star after completion (PAL)
Me and my twin later got our own SNES about a year later also with Super Mario World. This version had the blue 96 after completion…..
I always thought the star signified something to do with the way the game had been completed i.e completed in under a certain time or how many lives used etc.??
Liked the video mate, always find this sort of thing interesting….good work :-)
In Super Mario Advance 2, I was playing the game after I beat the 1st castle, and a few levels later or a LOT of lost lives later, the castle is rebuilt letting me play it again.
kek
I actually played that arcade version! They used to have it at a pizza restaurant in Florida. I hadn't thought about that in many years lol.
I don’t know In witch one but in one version your 1-up counter go higher than 99
It happens in the Game Boy Advance port Super Mario Advance 2 where your counter can go up to 999 lives!
"the more money you put in, the longer you can play"
that...SUCKS!
Basically any arcade machine.
To add some explanation to the title screen, this was originally called SMB4, so you can imagine the Japanese version to have retained some of that lineage quality.
"Today we'll be looking at the American, Hell and Japanese version of the original game"
Here I thought only the third game was made by Satan.
The T.C. Pal was basically hell for video games. All games were made in japan and usa so they all used ntsc. Pal is superior in video and color quality but sucks in video games because developers did not optimize for it.
@@mtunayucer Not all. Most.
I assume the feather was added to help you get out of the blocks if you had kicked away the shells.
The All stars version of Mario World has a different Luigi Spite. Thought I would mention that.
Great series!.. also, Luigi U is the best 2d Mario game if I remove my nostalgia from childhood. This ones a close second tho for me. Cheers.
You can use the feather at 2:55 to get up to the secret, watch some speed runners they got some nice tricks to getting up there. :P
The cape's just a PEPPERONI SECRET!
I grew up with 2 SNES carts and 2 GBA carts for this game and still haven't gotten around to finishing it... I always got stuck on that loop as a kid... I think I still have the SNES copies too, or at least one of 'em.
Another minor difference is the re-release of SMW in 1994 under the "Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World" SNES cart. In the All-Stars version of SMW they took Luigi's sprite and gave him his own sprite design instead of simply being Mario in green that was in the original SMW. Everything else was the same (I believe). Originally released in 1993 as just All Stars with SMB 1-3 and the Japan version of SMB2, Nintendo re-released All-Stars in 1994 adding SMW to the cart with the above Luigi change, and allowing SNES buyers to own one single cart that has all the NES Mario games and SMW.
Iirc the 1993 release of SMAS had SM 1, 2, 3 and the revamped japanese version of 1, called "The Lost Levels" (and it was *much* harder)
Those dolphins ARE cute! Only way to up the adorbs would be with some lemon grass, fettuccine alfredo and a nice red.
JoshKall sounds like Code Bullet but without code.
You can still swap lives in the arcade Super Mario World. I've played it.
One last difference not mentioned: On the Super System version, All of the blue message boxes are removed, marking 75% of the in-game dialogues unused!
the super mario all stars + super mario world pack also has some differences, for starters all of luigi's sprites reflect the personality that we now know today for the character.
That's the only difference I'm aware of in that version. Which I would have mentioned had I remembered it at the time.
Also the pal version has one more three added at the start
1:45 the int version removes the nail that’s in the sign, and makes it look more shadowed for some reason.
no, the nail is not related to the shading at all
You got rid of your friend's voice!
dumb_idiot ???
TheGamingPros 3000
The original had some other guy in it but most people didn't really care for him.
It wasn't even the other guys voice that was the problem, it was both of them and their extremely cringey attempt at comedy.
somebody needs to make a version difference video on this video
dumb_idiot the reason why is because he cursed in the video.
The final special world in the Japanese version has coins spelling out "YOU ARE SUPER PLAYER!". In the international version, they were changed to fix the grammar, now spelling out "YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER!"
That was one of the few diffrences Fernando showed instead of josh. He didnt want to redub it. So he just cut the difference out
2:40 if you fly over there i think there will be stairs and down there is a pipe go down and you discovered a secret level area
I spent about 20 minutes figuring out a way to access the secret exit with that cape. I think the result was that it is in fact possible.
Difficult, but not impossible, after throwing the controller at the TV 20 billion different times
did that super advanced video come out?
Actually the feather can help you reach the secret exit in vanilla. I have done it numerous times in speedruns. You don't need the switch if you have a feather :P. Good video anyways.
Really? As far as I know you can't get enough speed to fly up to the key.
Is there a difference between the Japanese Super Mario World Japanese version and the Japanese virtual console version on the 3DS?
Can you do a Version differences on Earthbound and Mother 2?
That would be WAY to long of a video.
@@alligatorarmy67 Yeah, it would take ages to compile everything.
I Love The International Version Cuz There's Some 1-UP Musrooms In The Water
You forgot to mention in the Super Mario All Stars (+Super Mario World) version of the game, they replaced green Mario with Luigi.
Jasoncrafter82 I have that version and that was when Luigi had his own sprite
I have a PAL version of SMW and my version shows 96(star) on my completed file. I'm pretty sure it's an early copy too as I got it less than a month after release date. Was it the later versions that showed the completed file in blue?
It must have been the later releases of the game. :x
On an unrelated note, I love your icon; does the artist of it have a website?
Ha! Thanks! And yes he does, but I'd best not put links in here. He's called Wagner Mutt if you want to search him yourself. :3
Oh wow; I had seen the pic of the tiger kissing the dog's cheek and could never find the artist! That's amazing. XD Thank you for the info!
Sounds like they added all those things to make the game easier.
Also the physicals are completely different in the PAL and the US version, so i wonder why you didn't mention them
Well yeah of course they are. But they're different for every SNES game, nothing exclusive to SMW.
+Jurpo Jarppinen To create different levels of violence. :P
(Sorry, this is an in-joke.)
The super system is at my local arcade!
Where is the uncut version?
oof, people hated him so much, that you cut your friend!
"little game I call 'dodge the mushroom,'" LoL!
This game needs more power ups they could use some from smb 3 or they could make new ones like metal suit (it gives mario silver shoe's and make him stomp when hes falls down from a hight higher then 5 blocks)
hey you didint put the super mario world nes versio!
where is the regular version of this episode
In his second channel
Hmmmm. The JP version had a spurious 1 on exactly four levels. 96+4=100. Coincidence?
please make more videos xD
You missed the biggest difference between the Japanese and the American version on the last level in the special Zone, coins spell out the phrase you are a superstar. And the Japanese version, it says, you are Superstar.
Holy shit, I didn't know the L+R fact.
05:21-05:22
I'm gonna download SMW (J) now ^^
3:24 Where is the gauwiy part? Was that you or Fernando? Always sounded like you
1:33 reznor wheel???
I only played Super Mario Advance 2
But in gba the censorship of eat dolphin in the international was removed :'v
Please make one for Super Mario Bros.
0:24 Hell
Why did you cut Fernando's voice from this video
ThyBonesLiquified it’s because people found him annoying.
@@merlinthemutt1386 I wish we could do that with Mike Matei
this is not the comet observatory because there was someone with him
they cut Fernando out of this 'recut'
sorry i just meant him ok
Fienda and ghwhyi was removed
How can someone (with a decent ammount of age) haven't played Super Mario
World a bit? I mean, i didn't had one and still played a fair ammount in
my friends and cousin houses... and that's here in Brazil. (and I
played both versions!) Cmon!
Exactly! I played it on my mac when I was like 8 or 9
pal europe and oeanic countries including austrilia
maybe i havent played it because i dont have an snes
I have no mouth.....
...... and I must scream.
8h37 3mai2017 i love that
I feel like I have the PAL version even though I live in America. Im not sure but I think the file select thing is the PAL version
Not possible, unless your console is also PAL version.
Anakunus Its not an actual SNES its a gamer tech version I think
well the cartridges look totally different, so you could judge by that
sorry never mind i was watching his freinds channel
All these stuff added in gba
I been playing the gba Japanese version lately, dont need to know japanese to play a mario game 😛 though i wish i still had my original English copy, I got it the day it came out and my classmate stole it from me
u can also eat dolphins in super mario advance 2
why you cut fsawk out
you missed this so I'm just going to assume you didn't know but you can get 100 exits in the Japanese version using glitches and the American version it caps out at 96
Do Animaniacs (GB/Genesis/SNES)
I did not know you can re enter castles with L+R.... been playing over 26 years now
Only an Australian could somehow stretch out "so" to have three syllables.
You didn't talk about how the pal version has a super sonic mario that breaks the game...
I don’t have a snes
japan version is harder and you can eath dolphins with yoshi and example usa version if you are wearing the cap and some enemy atack you ,, you only loss the cap but in japan version they turn you into a dwarf directly
maybe an episode about difference betweet original mario and mario maker. cause mario maker says it used mario bros engines, but several differences in the gameplay, hundred of historical places and items removed (and mechanics), more update they are, more mario maker isn't a mario bros anymore with weird stuff coming from nowhere. plus amiboo bullshit things. several amout to differences to talk about and nobody listed it already for what i know.
you don't need to know that there is a feather though. there is such thing as a secret. Just jump and discover yourself. Nuff said
What happened to your friend?
*Japanese copies are always Harder and unforgiving the US and Euro are the best to play!* ⭐️
To the two people on this planet that haven't played Super Mario World...I'm here to laugh and point at you in a hilarious over the top cartoon like fashion because you have not played this game!Ahahahahahahaha!!!!!
