  • The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal was completed in 1827 allowing ships from the continent to trade to Gloucester. This trade lasted until the early 1970s when ships became too large to travel along the 16-mile-long canal. Today this area is very for retail and leisure with the modern Gloucester Quays retail outlet opened in 2009.

At the opening of your vlog I had to do a double take, I'm a 69yr old ex truck driver on the east coast mainly from South-end to Walls-end, but a few years I was in and out of the old Goole harbor and the approach to the warehouses is almost identical 😀

Originally said to be '16 miles long, 16 feet deep, with 16 bridges. Some of the bridges have gone, & it's probably only that deep in places, but what an achievement - to have built it without a single JCB!

Gloucester continues to silt up quite badly!

@@ChrisWitts Back in the 1990's, my boat was on the canal. Above Sharpness, where the river is literally just over the wall from the canal, every so often a barge would come down from Gloucester full of silt dredged from the docks. A conveyor/elevator would tip the sludge over the wall into the river. Knowing as I did the peculiar tide & current pattern of the river, I asked the chap working this barge if it was effective. He laughed, shrugged, said 'I dunno, I reckon it'll go up on the next flood, then get 'locked' back in next time the gates are opened....I've been doing this job for x years, I reckon I recognise some of this mud....'
