Thanks Chris, really enjoyed that!
My Pleasure, keep watching each Saturday.
I grew up in Plymouth, where we have Millbay docks and Cattedown. Sharpness reminds me of those doc, great to see it's still busy.☺️
Thanks Jonathan, hopefully Sharpness will keeping going for another 150 years.
Great video
Thank you so much Chris! I would like to have been to it, but unfortunately I had other filming commitments that weekend, so thanks for this excellent video. Brilliant! Take care, Paul
Thanks Paul, I had a pleasant weekend on QBII, the weather was good which helped.
Nice little tour and thank you for a great commentary. we are coming in August for a celebration fair so i am a bit confused there was one now. look forward to seeing you then
Hi David, yes I am there on the 17th Aug, having a table but haven't worked out what to display on it!!
Many thanks Chris, as always, very informative.
So enjoyed that brilliant Chris!!
Thanks Peter
Thank you Chris. I really enjoyed this one. Please keep them coming!!
Many thanks John
Is this just been filmed or from before sanctions against the Russians
Russian and Ukrainian fish factory, (aka Klondykers') ships used to be in Loch Broom, Ullapool being supplied by local fishermen, who thus emptied the Minch of Herring.
Squirrel: "Am I the first to think of this?"
You may know by now the other sailing ship is the Tenacious, which is not now running as it use to but there is a petition out to restart it's use.
Great memories at Harkers I worked there from 1965 to 1970 I recognise and worked with Tammy Cawthorn ,Cliff Charlsworth and Ashley Ward in the film.
Thanks David, it's great when you see someone you recognise in a film.
What a grand film , lots of accomodation on her , Must have a large crew ?
Spies
An excellent and interesting video as always. What was the music you used for the soundtrack it was really good and complimented the video nicely 👍
Love Google. The ship "Fluvius Otter" is named after the UK river "Otter". Fluvius is latin for a river or stream. A sister ship named "Fluvius Plym" is likewise named after the River Plym.
Interesting video. It was also good to see QBII passing in the background at the start of the video.
Life for ordinary Russian folk has always been harsh. It hasn't helped that they have been invaded seriously 3 times in the last 225 years-Communist revolution resulting from one.with all the lack of freedoms that followed, then WW2 and horrific losses until victory. Despite all the problems in the UK I am relieved I live here not Russia,
For anyone thats' interested the SOMOVSKIY Class ,BALTIYSKIY Class, the smaller LADOGA Class and later the more modern MEKHANIK Class could be seen all over the Uk ports.
They used to come to the 'Wash Ports' on the East Coast back in the 70's (Communist times) ,80's,90's and early to mid 2000's but,as you say,no more. They used to bring timber and take back grain and farm machinery etc. They had the 'Hammer & Sickle 'in the 70's and later the Russian colours on the funnel and some of them were really big vessels and couldn't get into the port basins so had to dock on the outer quays. When in port the Russian guys used to go and buy old Lada car parts and even full cars from the local scrap yards to take back with them to Russia. The return cargo would be in the hold while the cars would be on the decks for all to see !! I know the Russians are not liked much these days but they would frequent the local pubs in Kings Lynn and Boston and some spoke English and they were friendly folk just trying to make a living. They were not rich. It would be good to see the Russian ships again IMO........Thanks for the video.
Excellent video as always. | didn't know about the 150th anniversary. Very interesting.
Should be a good weekend at Sharpness. A rare opportunity to sail into the docks aboard the little Dunkirk veteran, QBII.
@@ChrisWitts Yes - I believe QBII once worked on the Thames.
@@ThamesShips Yes, from when she was built in 1936 to when she transferred to Dartmouth and Plymouth in the 1960s.
Thank you from British Colombia Canada.
Many thanks John, glad you enjoyed the film
A bit about flag etiquette: UK merchant ships fly the maritime national Red Ensign at the stern. Only UK Warships are allowed to fly the Union Jack. Foreign ships should fly our maritime national flag, the Red Ensign, (not the union jack), when in UK ports - carried up high on a mast. Their own country's national flag will be carried at the stern Conversely, UK ships visiting foreign ports will fly that country's National maritime flag - usually their national flag, high up on a mast. Not sure if Sharpness Docks is a registered UK ship so to speak but no-one will quibble that they were marking respect for their people.
They show respect each time a dear colleague dies.
Thanks for the information on the Red Duster at half mast, respect. I asked your friend Gintonics2 and she wasn`t aware of reason for the half mast. Show the school kids your great videos, they will then know who the shipping companies are that don`t care too much for our environment with their poorly maintained smokey ships.
let's hope the school kids are also shown the 60 million cars fuming out noxious gases everyday! this ship carries thousands of tonnes of cargo a year and just a few puffs of smoke were caught on Chris' video. You try carrying that much cargo in your car a year and we'll measure your emissions (even if it's electric..)
Why do they still that move into the lock, which caused the demolition of the Severn railway bridge, surely the engines are strong enough to stop them ramming the gates.
Hi Paul, are you referring to the ship turning to stem the tide? It's just the way it has to be.
Wow!, it always amazes me how in the UK in 2024, we need to import cement! can we not make it ourselves?.......
I think if we did there would be nothing left of us as an island, would dig ourselves into the sea!
We can, but it's cheaper to import it - it always comes down to money
@@brucemcpherson8832 Yes, the root of all evil!
These videos really cheer me up Chris. Your style is brilliant and the narrative is good, so good. Keep up the exceptional work buddy.
Many thanks Aaron, always a pleasure to hear from you.
Brilliant! Will be down for 13/14
Hi Peter, I shall be commentating aboard QBII, so look out for me and say hi.
I never thought this ship was still sailing. She used to visit The Wash Ports in Lincolnshire regularly in the 1990's.Must be well looked after!
She was a good looking ship
Ya matrícula de Madeira en España ya no nos quedan barcos matriculados en nuestro país y menos tripulacione
Brilliant thanks Chris,
Thanks Peter, another one this Saturday
I've been up down both sides of the river, and over the bridge countless times. I've never seen a ship moving ever!
That is bad luck. Gloucester Harbour Trustees web site has a daily shipping list.
Another great video Chris.
Many thanks for your kind comment
Great work, Chris, as usual. I especially like your background music. Please add info about the music to the notes.
So interesting Chris didn't know place existed going to visit in the next couple of weeks! Keep them coming!!
Hi Peter, yes Lydney is interesting as is the Forest of Dean and nearby Chepstow. Well worth exploring.
Great views of the dock from the air, though if you flew along the embankment you might have seen the outline of the old stows used to protect the harbour. I enjoyed working on the lock gates during the 1980s when it was still hand operated. The coffee shop ice-cream is from Tiddenham farm and is very enjoyable and good value. Thank you for a great video.
Hi David, Yes, I should have flown further but the wind was increasing, an enemy of my drone, as is birds!
The safety barriers are pathetic. Spent many hours at Lydney docks and even lived on a catamaran for a while many years ago. Also worked at Pine End works for a couple of years.
I agree, but we live in that 'have to be extra careful, times. Could go on ...
But not a gloomy story. Surprisingly agile control of the vessel it would seem. Given the night shots, gathering the footage must have taken several hours; this is not a quick shoot and post video. As usual, a well selected piece of music - what was it?
You are correct, it takes a lot of my time, including time to edit the footage. Fortunately I enjoy both filming and editing!!
Great video. Another load of cement from Spain! I really like the close up views of the ship when it is in the lock. I also liked the night shots as well. 👍
Many thanks, another one next week of same port.
Thoroughly enjoy your your videos as An old haulier from over here in Essex, use to load bales of rubber from sharpness to Essex in 1976!
Hi Peter, that is very interesting, no longer the case today. Thank you for your comments.
I moved there from London ow be a old butt came a shock ,
Lovely view of the canal which looks very impressive. But it is on one trip my good lady will not wan to go on. Thank you for a great video
Didn't know Thomas the tank engine exists in real life. Such a surprise ❤
Peter Scott came to Slimbridge originally to shoot birds and paint!! Slimbridge is a village that belongs to The Berkeley Castle Estate. For hundreds of years this area provided game for the Castle and locals.Even back in 1960s my friend`s dad regularly hunted this area to feed his family. The Estate still leases the land to farmers and WWt.
Born and spent my early life living and playing in and around the docks in the 60s/70s. it was a busy port then.We had a lovely community where everyone knew each other and looked out for everyone. When I look at the dock area and how sad it all looks now. I`m glad to have my memories of sunny days and fun times.
What a surprise. I was completely unaware of Hollybush and so knew nothing of its back story. "A chapel of ease" is something I must read of in other references. A fascinating story all round.
Many thanks Nigel, it was a nice surprise to drive past, see the church and stop to investigate.
Great Vid as Allways And Great info As well Do You Have A Photo Of The Drone You Use And Is It Hard Our easy To Use /??
Thanks John. I use a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone and I found it OK to learn. It is nerve racking having it in the air and have been close to losing it a couple of times. The problem I find is our weather!! Has been too windy for it so frustratingly haven't used it much this summer.
She's adorable 😍
Superb camera work made for a very interesting video thanks
That i a very nice compliment, makes the effort worthwhile, I may not get the thousands of views that others get, but ... so what.
Wow your cute daddy
OK
Crazy but amazng.
