    Good stuff. One additional scenario that I face quite frequently in sunny California is the sideline being filled with easy easy-ups and umbrellas. Or filming facing the sun.
    I film with a couple of different setups, depending on my mood. AX53 or iPhone 14 Pro Max w/ Moment lens, remote controlled by a DJI Ronin Gimbal and Sony PS4 controller, 15ft stand. Insta360 cameras are behind the goals. All edits are done in Luma Fusion on my iPad, clock, score , slow mo replays.

      For filming into the sun, I bought a black 12x18 inch piece of plexiglass, and drilled some holes into it so that I can screw it onto a hotshoe attachment. It provides shade to the lens of the camera and allows for better video to be taken. For the umbrellas on the sidelines, if I'm able to go back far enough, it's not a big deal. But if someone has a VEO on the same side as me (which means I have to set up right on the sideline to prevent them from blocking my shot), then I just have to suffer through it.

    Thanks for your Video. I have been trying to get my Grand Son's Games at a indoor Place that has Plexiglass except at both side line a half door. So purchased a Extra Gopro to get fixed footage aimed at both ends of the field then use a Lumix G95 with a Zoom. So the Go pro's save me when they are up close and during large movements that I am forced to make. Using Davinci Resolve 18 studio to edit so it is supper easy to sync all the cams using the audio. I used to shoot basketball for Tv stations years ago and had the opportunity to be in a Box with no one to worry about. So I totally agree with distance and height. I am going to be looking forward to when my Grand Son starts playing outside.

    This is a great video. I am interested in using Premiere Pro to make ease of grabbing highlights, adding things like the scoreboard, music, etc. (edit: nevermind, I see it requires a monthly subscription through Adobe). For a novice, how difficult would you say it is to use the editing software? I have a Sony AX53 which does 4k30fps but decided that the quality of 1080p is adequate as I value the 60fps. I got the Neewer 13ft light stand to use as a tripod for the camera setup, and buying a pan/tilt motor which I use via joystick. Now all I need is the video field monitor to watch the action (thinking a tablet with decent nit rating for outdoor use).

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! I think Premiere Pro can be easy to use in a narrow scope of adding video, adding audio, and editing down to highlights. I'll post a video of my editing process in a few weeks which you can view as a reference. For the scoreboard, I can share the Essential Graphics file that I created if you just want to reuse it. Creating your own is a bit more work and can come with a lot of headaches. But if you're able to use mine, or find a free one to download and use, then it's pretty easy to update it in Premiere Pro for each game.
      I think the setup you described would work well. Some things to focus on would be to ensure that the light stand is stable enough. I did a quick comparison of a light stand we had in the house, and it flexed quite a bit more than the setup I've settled on. Also, with the pan/tilt motor, check the speed of it. I bought a cheap one from Amazon ($90.00 USD) and used it in one game last year, but I wasn't able to keep up with the ball. Maybe if you're far back enough a slow one will work, but I found it insufficient for my needs at that time. A more expensive one probably would have been able to do better. For the field monitor, double check what the Sony AX53 can output while recording. My first attempt with my Sony AX100 failed because I found that it couldn't record in 4K and output anything to the monitor, so I had to lower my recording to 1080p. It sounds like that's your preferred format anyhow, so it may not be a concern for you.
      Good luck with your setup!

    Last question, 😊. My camera seems to catch ALOT of parent chatter from the stadium stands. What do u recommend to help with this? I don’t want the entire video muted. As we enjoy listening to the players communicating. Reminder, I have SonyX53

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před rokem +1

      I have used a notch filter before to try to dull the parent chatter, but it also impacts the coach and kids talking. Getting a directional mic to attach is probably your best bet, since it will try to eliminate audio behind and to the sides.

    • @kennethwong7243
      @kennethwong7243 Před rokem

      In post production, I put the raw audio at about 30% and I always put music in the background. Yes, you don't hear specific player/coach chats, but you eliminate the parent chatting you mention and wind buffeting. I personally feel you need current background music to keep the soccer interesting. If there is a specific conversation I want to highlight, I then manually put the raw audio up to 70% and the music down to 30%.

Id like to see your future video explaining your set up more in depth ive had the same issue of not being tall enough to record & ended up buying a pan/tilt since you cant control from the ground. But i think your way might be more cheaper and faster. Also is premiere pro the same as premiere rush on mobile ive never used it but want to start uploading games with the scoreboard/time etc so the players can see themselves playing, i seen in one of your comments you wouldnt mind sharing your essential scoreboard/time file id appreciate it if you can i know it would make my life way easier on adobe since ive never edited a video before ever. Thanks, Jose. I'll try to get the set up video completed in the next few weeks. If you could let me know which pan/tilt control you got, and whether it's fast enough to do the job, I'd appreciate it. I'm nervous about spending a bunch of money on another one if it's as slow as the $100 dollar one that I tried last summer. Adobe Premiere Pro is similar to Adobe Premeire Rush, but it's a lot more robust and powerful. I tried importing the mogrt file into Rush, but it won't accept it the way Premiere Pro does. I searched online and found that the Graphics Templates created from After Effects are only usable in Premiere Pro, not Premiere Rush. I'll share the file here anyhow, and you can try in both applications if you want. drive.google.com/file/d/1ji0opBJBv59jDiAJPLXTp2HzmazA9HUs/view?usp=sharing

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před rokem

      I haven't looked into the current cameras available in the last few years. But the features I would focus on would be in this order.
      1. Sensor Size/Quality (GoPro 4K zoomed in is worse than my Sony with the 1 inch sensor at 1080p. More pixels doesn't always mean better quality).
      2. Optical Zoom ability. A GoPro will show the full field, but for my purposes, I want to be zoomed in more than without sacrificing quality.
      3. 4K - if I have the above 2, then getting more pixels is key.
      at 500 dollars or less, I would probably end up going with a 1080p camera and you can balance the zoom vs picture quality as best you can. Also make sure that if you need to use it with a field monitor, some cameras can only record at lower qualities when outputting to a field monitor. My Sony recorded great in 4K, but I could only record 1080p when outputting to my monitor.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před rokem +1

      I thought I answered this earlier, sorry for the late reply. I have two camera setups because I keep all my old gear, and when I upgraded my system, I had enough old components to create two. I also have two kids, and if there's conflict in their games, one of the other parents is usually willing to take my old setup and record the game for me. I don't usually record two perspectives. However, if we end up in a really awesome finals somewhere that would make highlights much more appealing to show to colleges, then I would try to get multiple angles and put in the work on the editing side to make it more professional. I just haven't tried that yet due to the amount of work it would be.

    Great video and very informative. I am wanting to record my field hockey games and I have a few questions. What do you think of a cannon EOS 80D camera for recording and do you have any recommendations for a camera that is less than 1000 NZD. What do you think of Microsoft ChipChamp for video editing and do you have any recommendations for free editing software. Also what is your opinion on GoPro's, how much of the field do you see and what is the quality like. Thank you very much.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 11 měsíci

      Unfortunately, most of those questions are outside my area of expertise. I do know that some cameras like the EOS 80D may have a maximum video length, so if that camera is one, and if your halves are more than 30 minutes, you may need to start and stop recording partway through each half. I try to avoid that. I only really know Premiere Pro for editing, so I can't really speak to any others out there. The GoPro does a good job of getting the whole field, but I find it tough to identify who is who on the field when I've used the GoPro in the past.

    Looking to do the same thing (kids soccer game). Do you recommend a full sensor mirrorless camera instead of a camcorder? Or a sports gimbal?

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Camcorders can make it a lot easier for you. DSLR and other non-camcorder options sometimes have limitations on how long of a file they can record. Some cut off after 30 minutes. If you have one where that's not a problem, then you may get a better quality video out of it. But for me, the simplicity of a camcorder wins.
      For a sports gimbal, I find the tripod is sufficient. But my wife did just get a gimbal for her DSLR, and it's been great to get the stable video. If I had a DSLR and wanted to just get shorter action shots of the games instead of the full game, I'd definitely go for a gimbal.

    • @dcgirl8765
      @dcgirl8765 Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I tried the camcorder and liked it. The gimbal was more difficult likely because I tried three at once and they sort of cross circuited. For the games, I think I’m going to have two camcorders pointing in opposite directions because I find panning to be difficult. And I only ever seem to get one half of the field in the frame at one time. The thing is that I cannot see what I’m recording while I’m filming. A monitor would be helpful. So I’m on the hunt. Any gear recommendations you have would be much appreciated.

      I should get the set up video done in a few weeks. I use a camcorder with optical zoom, because I think the GoPro with no zoom would not allow me to get good enough quality video to use in highlight clips. Especially if the action is on the far side of the field. You're right about wanting rain protection. I do have a rain cover for my camcorder, and I also created a plexiglass 12"x18" flat cover that attaches to the top of the camcorder to prevent rain from directly hitting the camera, or from getting on the lens itself.

      I'll post the full list of links to the products that I've got when I post the next video, but here's a quick answer for you as well. For the pan handle extension it's SmallRig 15mm Threaded rods (16inch) (www.amazon.com/dp/B00AZFX77S), plus some 15mm clamps that I use to make sure that they don't unscrew while in use. I had to use a bit of muscle to get the first 15mm rod into the video fluid head, because it was designed to accept a rod that was slightly thinner in diameter. For the tripod, I recently bought a Geekoto 72 inch because it looked more stable (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WVV6L7S), but honestly it doesn't seem to have a massive improvement over the shorter single tube manfrotto that I already had.

    How can I get my Veo 1st generation camera to get that same end result quality video you have? Should i go up a certain feet and closer to the sideline?

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 10 měsíci

      I don’t think it’s possible. Those use a digital zoom to capture the relevant area of the field, so the quality is already reduced. I’m using optical zoom to manually track the play, and using a camera that’s designed for higher quality recording to begin with. If VEO had an 8K camera option, it might close the gap a bit. But any automated system available today just won’t compete on the video quality. They win in other areas though, like ease of use.

      @JeremyHalbert  Před 2 lety +1

      Give me a dollar amount and I’ll give my best recommendation that will be a combination of height and stability. For me, cheap means under 200 dollars, because I know the best tripods can run into the thousands, but I don’t want to recommend one that costs 180 if you’re looking for something in the below 50 range.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 2 lety +1

      Here's one that I think is inexpensive at $118.00, but good and stable. It is a bit bulkier than a single tube option though. The video head on this is good enough to get smooth pan/tilt. www.amazon.com/dp/B0784CWMP4

    Hey Jeremy, I am considering recording my future soccer games for the next season. I do not have much resources for a camera or camera equipment. However, I do own probably one of the best video recording smartphone (iPhone 13 Pro Max). So my question to you as an expert would be: do you think I can record "good enough" videos with my iPhone 13 Pro Max? and also what kinda equipment would you recommend for me recording the games with my phone?
    Kind Regards

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 2 lety +1

      I think you could get 'good enough; with the iPhone. I tried recording a game with my iPhone and did about a 1.4x zoom and put it on top of my normal setup. It wasn't as high quality, and I in my test I couldn't control the zoom, but I think it was still OK. I'm not sure about equipment to use when recording with a phone. I have seen someone do it at a game where they have a computer screen that they use to control a pan/tilt/zoom machine, but most of the time I just see people with a small tripod and a tripod to phone adapter.

      I recorded my son's high school games with an iPhone 13 Pro Max a top a 5 foot tripod always though in the stadium stands so I always get a good elevated view. Video quality is good at 1080 unless it gets too dark or stadium lighting is not good. I think I might try filming at 4K. I sit about row 10 so I am about 20 ft above the field. On a tripod, I can swivel smoothly. I have gotten pretty adept at using my 2 fingers to zoom in and out of the action. My biggest complaint is I am watching the whole game from my camera and my zooming is labor intensive.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 10 měsíci

      The Panasonic line of camcorders that I use (cx350, cx10) do support that with NDI. You can connect via cable or Wifi to a network and stream live. I however don’t do that because I cannot record in 4k and stream at a lower bitrate 720p simultaneously. Also, the streaming from my network always seems to lag or have other network issues. So when I want to stream, I just attach my phone to the top of my camcorder and stream from the phone while recording on the main camera.

      It attaches to the top of my camcorder. I set the zoom level before I start recording, and then it follows the action when I move the main camcorder around. It's not a perfect setup. I can't adjust it mid-game. But it works for letting remote people view the game in real time when they can't be there in person.

      @JeremyHalbert  Před rokem

      For game overview and for ease of use, I recommend the VEO setup. It gets very elevated and tracks the action on the field. It just doesn't give the ability to zoom in a lot and retain high quality video when zoomed. If that's not as important to you, then an automatic VEO setup is great. Or even using a GoPro would be good too.

    Would you mind sharing the camera you use?

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 2 lety +1

      Sure. The current one is a Panasonic AG-CX10. It does 4K 60fps, but the one thing I don't like is the lack of automatic ND adjustment. So it has a switch on the side that I have to pick ND Clear, ND 1/4 or darker. That means in Seattle on a day that ranges from cloudy to sunny, sometimes I can have a single game that's a bit overexposed, and a bit underexposed. The Sony AX line has a better overall 'auto' feature set in my opinion, including auto ND adjustment, but it won't do 4K 60fps, and won't record 4K at all while outputting to an LCD Monitor. Hope that helps.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  Před 2 lety +2

      @@MrFony67 If you want to upload to CZcams easily, and have the easiest way to handle all the post processing, while still delivering the most info in your CZcams vids, I recommend the following…. Don’t bother with the overlays like I do. They are a lot of work. But people like to know the end score, so put that in the title or description, and in the description, follow the same format I do where you enter a time stamp, and the score, starting with 0:00 Game Start. That tells CZcams to put a bar at the bottom of the video with text, making it easy for people to jump to the goals. And to make it easy on you, start and stop the recording after each goal, then you have a single file for each goal (or just the halves if there’s no goals). I find its easiest to record the goal, and the celebration, then center the video on the kickoff area, and quickly stop and start the recording again. If you’re looking just to do a slight upgrade, I recommend a cheap tripod that can get up to 6-7 feet with a fluid video head, and get a camcorder that does 4k, at 30fps. Watch some reviews, but I think the Sony AX line does a good job. I think if you can get a 1 inch sensor, that’s going to give you the best quality, but if most games are sunny, then don’t worry about the sensor size. Set it to auto, get a mini step stool if you want (I did that for a year), and take the camera as high as you can while still enjoying the game. I went with the LCD monitor because I got tired of feeling like I couldn’t see the game because I was watching on a tiny 3 inch display. But I was able to record good videos with that setup. Ping me again if you want to discuss more. Thanks.

      That would definitely be a lot less work. The main reason I still stick with this is because with the manual zoom and higher quality 4K recording, I can get a lot better highlight videos pulled together. I'm also blessed with the fact that for some teams I record for, they also have the VEO and Trace in action, so we get a lot of footage, and the analytics that the service based systems provide.
