You learn for several years and you kind of think like you can play an instrument. Then you listen to this, and you think again...amazing as is, period. A real motivation to just keep trying, learning, doing your stuff. One might one day be able to play like one of 'em...
Just for the records: the team is Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Pat Metheny on guitar, Jack De Johnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass. One (short) step behind God(s).
A tune played by the gods of music,,,,,,. The strong beat and amazing solos completely knocks me down. This is a music of the highest quality no doubt I think.
really amazing, i think i heard this version at least 1000 times now and i can't get enough of it. I also like Herbie being so authentic when he is playing this. When he does a mistake, he does not try to hide it or "overplay" it, he just stops and starts with a new idea :D So for example at 2:30 he kinda loses his idea or what he wanted to play, so he stops and he just really looks like he was thinking "ah damn" :D And his face when playing some scales or other lines is unique :D
Best jazz fusion ever...I am amazed with every individual here, how good they are. Ten years ago I would've say no way that one person can improvise like this, because this must be prepared, Pat must practiced years for this moment, but today i know that some persons are just to god and they can play what ever they want on instrument, yeah he certainly practiced years&years, but this moment was pure improvisation, and it was perfect. I guess you can say it's just god given gift or else, something like power to momentary transfer imagination into instrument.
This is such a MONSTER Set I am embarrassed to say I do not recognize the bass player ... And I believe this is Pat Matheny (guitar).... And being an old deaf drummer I totally recognize Mnsr DeJohnette on drums !! Such a magnificent Set here!
+Dennis Jump No need to feel embarrassed man, half the time no one knows who the bass players are! Dave Holland. Steady as a rock. Never seen such a cool looking bass player. The subtle smiles he's giving Herbie during his solo LOL Legendary bass player
@DennisJump youre so welcome man. hit me up on my channel if you wanna talk some jazz drums/music. my heroes are Blakey and Elvin, so if you got any stories to share, please do!!
Herbie Hancock.....genius of the jazz piano.....Pat Metheney's amazing guitar too......incredible music and an incredible version - probably the finest.
Good god damn, does Herbie show complete mastery here, and then Pat Metheny drives in with genius talent. Not to diminish the contributions on drums and bass by famous folks that you all in the audience MUST learn about.
My goodness gracious Herbie is rippin' it up! This song is a timeless classic for the all-time great jazz compositions. So deceptively simple in its form until someone like Mr. Hancock and his crew take it to the moon and back. Keep it up!
Dan-yell carpenter or J.S. Bach. I actually think that they would perceive the actual harmonic richness and colorfulness of this music quite positively and appreciate it.
I think they wouldn’t like it because the people that were born before Jazz often didn’t like jazz because it was so different. Just like parents today don’t like the music their children listen to, although I totally agree with them.
Your incomprehension and appreciation of jazz is understandable. Jazz is liberation for people who can feel it. I hope you'll be able to feel it someday.
Oh wow, I accidentally stumbled upon the concert one of my professors was referring to during a class, in which Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock play together XD Wasn't even looking for it on purpose.
+britocho The way he grips the pick, the guitar special device, the style playing and sound... it can only be Pat Metrheny. The strange thing is that he used to wear white and blue stripes shirts for decades.
Please don't flame me for my ignorance, I'm just getting into jazz. Who is the guitarist and WHAT is that he's playing??? And regarding this video: As David Letterman used to say when a band did something great on his show, "That's all you need right there!"
Thanks again and yes, that IS Pat Metheny. And what he is playing is a Roland G-300 guitar which is a controller for the Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizer. It looks like the guitar has been customized with a control panel to run the synth presets without having to go to the floor. Interesting setup.
This is one of THEE coolest renditions of Herbie's hit "Cantelope Island" I've ever heard (and there are A LOT of them)! Herbie's solo is, as Buddy Guy says, "So funky, I can smell it!" Pat Metheny graces us with his presence on guitar. You may recognize the "head", the beginning part of the song, from "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" by US3. czcams.com/video/JwBjhBL9G6U/video.html
I'm young at heart but not really young and has been following New talents and there are plenty of them but has to come back to my original love this kind of music with all the legends playing here.I hope this kind of music is not lost in this generation!Thank you Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny and watch this new kid Jacob Collier .
For those that might not know, this remix sampling Cantalope was made by a group called US3 and they named it "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)", released in 1993.
Sweet sound, amazing.I know them for long time and I have them on my collection is a must. Herbie and Patt Matheny what a celebration of sound. Thanks !
i can always count on this performance to get me in a good mood, especially Metheny’s part makes me feel encapsulated by the essence of guitar. such a wonderful feeling to be had.
Keys - Herbie Hancock.
Guitar - Pat Metheny.
Bass - Dave Holland.
Drums - Jack DeJohnette.
What the heck is Metheny playin'?
His decade old modded guitar
I think it's a guitar manufactured by Robbie the Robot..
Led Zep of jazz...
mad dope
This is, without doubt, the best version I have heard. Brilliant.
Watching this just takes me to another level of skill.......a skill rarely seen anywhere. HH's piano and PM's guitar......incredible.
iv'e just learned pm's part and i'm playing it with my band
Wow...soooo cool Yoav; well done sir!!
Can't be better than this! Musicianship on the highest level! Wow!🙏🙏🙏
One of my favorite live performances ever.

Thanks for this. It would be nice if it was in the description at the top. Gotta give credit where the credit is due baby!
Watched that more than 20 times. Amazing! Herbie, Pat, Jack and Dave together!!! Just perfect!!!
Herbie's solo just killed me
Amazing.....just amazing.....and Pat Metheny on guitar...incredible....just blows my mind x
Daniel Cormier is playing a solo this saturday. A drum solo. On your face.
salamgaz
Steroids killed you..
Me too !
This video got me into jazz some years back. Would've missed a lot if it didn't happen, lucky me.
Same!
I love his occasional dark/midnight blue chords from the 1960's. But it's hard not to get emotional when he starts pounding on the keyboard at 4:33.
fantastic rolling and swinging Jazzy Blues Rock
the first real jazz I listened back in 2008. and now I can play It with my own chorus.
I can listen to this for eternity

I have listened to this countless times, awesome, jamming music. A league of it's own......
Oh My Holy God what guitar solo from Pat!!!!
lol bass @ 5:06 after Hancock's solo is just like "Fuck you're good"
No shit huh? And check out Pat Metheny blowin' out killer notes like it's a walk in the park. Crazy good.

Metheny is a master at inside-outside improv. Herbie is as well, creating tension by playing chromatically outside the changes.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Una canzone.
E mi è cambiata la giornata.
Magique !!!! le thème reste un hymne à Herbie .......
toujours le plaisir de les écouter !!!!!..........
you're listening to the music, but you're feeling Dave's holland groove. dat bass :'v
Yes we are!!!!!!!
HOLDING IT DOWN in the BASSment!!!
WTF Pat Metheny, that solo... Perfection
Only a complete and total maroon could thumbs down such virtuosity.
+Philip Berg LOL Well said.
+Philip Berg Indeed!

+Philip Berg ... Agreed!
Herbie Hancock.....genius of the jazz piano.....Pat Metheney's amazing guitar too......incredible music and an incredible version - probably the finest.
I'm a fan of progressive rock/metal and I can see what influenced bands like dream theater so much
Good God, what a lineup. Sounds amazing, thanks so much for posting.
Not enough superlatives for his talent - g.o.a.t (Greatest Of All Time)!
They play it so awesomely it's like a new original version of the song. Nailed it! Soooo fantastic!
listening this to try to drown out the sound of my roommate''s country music in the next room
Joe Rizzo godspeed
Joe Rizzo .best comment.BTW did it work?
The guy playing the guitar is Pat Metheny love his trio gigs!
Good god damn, does Herbie show complete mastery here, and then Pat Metheny drives in with genius talent. Not to diminish the contributions on drums and bass by famous folks that you all in the audience MUST learn about.
Herbie the heritage master class and Miles Davis cie....genius merci👍
Êxtase é a palavra que expressa o que sentimos ao ouvir esse "Imortal".Toda a atmosfera, que nos envolvem essas melodias, tem cheiro e sabor.
It's not much of a fusion jazz version, but yea it's freakin' awesome

pats look is essentially peak level jazz fusion aesthetic. if a berklee practice room in the 80's was a person.
Your incomprehension and appreciation of jazz is understandable. Jazz is liberation for people who can feel it. I hope you'll be able to feel it someday.
What's that crazy Guitar Pat's playing!
Has to be an Ibanez, but what?
+Dave Kana Roland Guitar synth from early 80s, which looks modified with a control panel of some kind.
+Lee Barry Thanks, I had no idea!
Not modified. The original design of the Roland guitar synth was first an entire guitar with the system retrofitted to it. The pickups came later.
Oh wow, I accidentally stumbled upon the concert one of my professors was referring to during a class, in which Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock play together XD Wasn't even looking for it on purpose.

Professor actually lol His name is Samuel Morales, I believe there's some of his music in internet, probably from his Quintet.
SM Quintet, that makes it much easier to find lol
That's Pat Metheny in the guitar...right? Could somebody confirm this please?? :D
