The man who was a real leader followed by other jazz musicians. I am proud I had the opportunity to shake your hand and tell you about it. Rest in peace.
We played Spain in my high school Jazz bad, that would have been... oh... 2001. I thought the director was insane picking it for us. We were probably terrible but we did it. Still love the tune and all of what I hear from Chick. I can't thank the director enough for pushing us into doing things like this.
RIP Chick. I'll be listening this masterpiece during this sad night in Madrid, Spain. I'm so lucky I got to see him perform live in my hometown, Barranquilla, Colombia.
Anybody notice that Gambale starts taking a solo at 5:30 when he's not supposed to? He starts soloing, and then Chick Corea plays the melody over him, and Gambale and Patitucci look up at 5:36. At 5:50, Gambale and Patitucci are laughing about it, and Marienthal gives Gambale the ol' eyebrow raise at 5:57. I never noticed it the first time around. Funny stuff! Even the masters can make mistakes!

Sax player kills it! Bass player shines! Drummer syncopation and chops - wow! I have always respected how Chick allowed his individual band players to grow and expand their talents - letting them take the center stage from time to time. Its the characteristic of a mature player and TEAM player. Additionally, it takes so much pressure off of Chick to have to lead every night. While Chick is gone, his contributions to music lives on!

While I agree this is a great rendition for me the best will always be the acoustic version on Light as a Feather. I don't know how old you are my friend but if you are not familiar with it you owe it to yourself to check it out. If you are then to each his own. ✌
I remember coming back home from work (I’m a wedding band musician in Monterrey, Mx.) and play his tunes as soon as I got in my car, or along with my friends and pretending we played just like him. He made our lives more comfortable and full of motivation. Rest In Peace, Chick Corea. 🙏🏼❤️
