- In every way, timekeeping was born out of man’s fascination with the sun and its daily rhythms. The world’s earliest horologists used sundials to inform our now-familiar gears and hands. But of all the things they tracked, the lunar cycle was one of the most important.
Today, the moon and its ways may not seem as crucial as it once did, but for those who are interested, there is the moon phase complication. This is a complication in a watch that reflects the current phase of the moon as you see it in the sky.
In this video we’re going to cover a brief history of the moon phase complication, talk about the phases of the moon, and show you how to set the moon phase on a watch.

using a moon phase practically seems a lot more personal/meaningful than using the calendar date for a monthly event. great content as always
Yeah sounds about right.
Or so you know when to keep your werewolves locked up 😜
Ketamine!! Yes!!!
Just bought a Montblanc Star Legacy Moon Phase today. Figured out how to set all but the moon phase and this helped. Thank you!
I just received my new Omega Speedmaster Blue Side of the Moon Aventurine dial moonphase today. So timely!
We love hearing that!
Very crisp , easy to understand and precise explanation. Thanks.
Just purchased a real 29 1/2 moonphase watch myself and stumbled on this video. Thanks. :)
Always wanted to own a moon phase watch, and today that might just happen. This video was a huge help.
I am in love with Olevs.
Did you get your watch? I have subbed an offer in for mine...
@@Renarde0090 idid ! and a small while
ago i passed it on to a friend who loves wearing it.
You explained all the different things so well. Thanks a ton for the content
Fantastic video! Very detailed and clear. Short and sweet. Thanks for explaining this!
What a fabulous and helpful video!!!!! Thanks!
Always wanted to know this! I'll probably never own a moon phase watch but this has always peeked my curiosity. Thanks
You can get quite descent watches with moon phase at around 200 euros. You just need to look for a while.
There are some good ones for $150 on ebay
I just picked up an almost new Filippo Loreti on eBay for like $70. I saved about $120. It's beautiful.
Such a timepiece is very, very handy as a shortcut if you are into surfing or boating since the tides are tied to the moon's orientation....
*piqued*
Such a great video and a beautiful example of a moonphase. Subscribed
Thank you. I have learned something today.
Great video! I enjoyed the background info too :)
Thank you for this educational video.
Great vid 👍 I love the Heuer Moonphase Chronograph (Ref. 188.505 that features a Lemania 1883 Caliber ) so much! 😍
Yes. Nice video
Mate
The Laph in the back earned you a thumbs up
thx bro!!the moon phase is important for understanding you phase
I have a wonderful Blancpain moonphase watch which also tells the day and date. The moon dial is beautiful and I enjoy comparing the full moon on the watch to the full moon in the sky.
My favorite is the Audemars Piguet 25682BA.......STUNNING.
Thanks for clearing that up....always wondered what the correct procedure was. Now I’m ready for another watch purchase 😊
Sure like you can afford it
@@JACKLOPW you have no idea......
Knowledge is dangerous. After learning how complicated to set the moon phase, it really turned me off from getting watches with this feature.😂
Good to see a bottle of Laphroaig in the background.
Ah yes, that good 'ol walrus and mermaid bathwater from the attic of a seaside cottage!
@@ItsNeverTooHot4Leather lol the one and only
That's hot! 🔥
Great video !! Concise and informative. The JLC is probably my fave… looks so damn good
Thankyou for this video, very interesting. I recently bought a Longines master collection moonphase, beautiful piece 🤗
That’s a good looking watch.
Good choice. It's up there on my list
awesome watch, just got one, and it's my favorite. Well worth the money.
Ahhh, Thanks for this. I always thought that window with moon was for day or night indicator. Good to know. Thanks
Great video, but more than anything else the BGM is absolutely spot on!
I don't have a moonphase but I'm here because they're awesome
Thank you it helped for my titan moon phase watch
This is great always wondered how to set these things.
Also just gonna throw this out there. You should consider circle frame glasses. They’ll fit your eyes and face way better
Great stuff. It's just no way that I will keep setting this bloody thing in every month.
Thanks for helping me set my JLC!
Is it a JLC Master?
that was a nice video
You have got to appreciate these technical videos from C&C, informative and nicely done. It's too bad it has gone to the crapper since it got bought out by Hodinkee.
The problem occurs sometimes due to the incorrect pusher( moon phase/ date) is pressed to advance the date , I.e. Nautilus 5712
My moonphase stopped moving, i changed the time while it was at 2am once and since then the moonohasr hasn't moved.
If someone knkws what i have to do please let me know.
Finally I can set up my moon phase watch property instead of just guessing by looking at the actual moon.
Does the mechanism of the watch get damaged if you try and set it up several times?
Even if this video wasn't informative, I would have left a "like" for the bottle of Laphroaig in background alone! 😊
Good video
Thanks
I have 2 moon phase watches. I also have ADD. so I'll have to watch this video a few more times to figure out.
Very well...
when you say set the watch to 6.30 is it am or pm? thank you.
Note: not all moonphase complications function this way! With mine, the moonphase and the date change simultaneously at midnight. So I can simply set the date and the moonphase according to the current date, no need to start from a day earlier
When setting the moonphase, does one need to have the crown pulled as if setting time? Or can the moonphase be set with the crown in its normal place?
When he is setting the moonphase his seconds hand is moving, so I do not think you are supposed to!
I just got one today and its a full moon tonight do i just leave the moon in the centre position
So what should one do in a month like February? If I advance the date by 3 days at the beginning of March, that will’ ve also advanced the moon phase by three days which isn’t desirable. Same thing for months with only 30 days, just 1/3 as bad.
See the video at 4:02. The date has its own pusher, so you can set it independently of the moonphase.
So what happens when you go from 31 to 30 days as an example?
I’ve been setting it incorrectly for many of moons...! Just pressed until it got to the right phase.
6:30 pm( I assume) and One day before...!
Hope the Breguet, AL&S, PP and Zenith weren’t damaged...!!!!
Hey MCC Le chinois,
Correct. 6:30 is best practice as to not damage any of the complication, and one day before allows you to make sure date, moonphsae and AM/PM are synchronized. Thanks for watching!
@@CrownandCaliber I own the JLC MUT Moon Phase in rose gold, which is the same model JLC as shown in the video. Nowhere in the owner's manual does it suggest setting the watch to 6:30 before setting the moon phase. No big deal as I don't bother to set both the date, which I can't read without a magnifying glass, or the moon phase anyway as I don't want to risk scratching the watch. It's important to me to have a moon phase but it doesn't have to be an *accurate* moon phase. If I want accurate, I'll just look up at night, lol.
@@downingbethune8758 And what about the hour & mn ? Do you glance at your phone to get the exact time ? Congrats though for your choice : the JLC Ultra Thin Moon phase is my dream watch !
@@didierlevy4268 Lol, no I use the JLC for the time. But I do sometimes glance at my phone to set my watch to roughly the exact time.
Hi, that's very interesting! How does the watch recognize that 30 days and 31 days are alternating every month?
Unless the watch is:
a "perpetual calendar (way complicated, and thus expensive)",
or
an "annual calendar (not to be confused with "triple calendar"),
otherwise, they don't. The user have to manually advance the date in such case of months with 30 days (or less).
Lunar months are 29 or 30 days. They cannot be 31 days. Never
Is there a practical reason for moon phase in the USA Today ?
Nomos needs a moon phase complication
Its really complicate to adjust date time and also phase....
At the same time.....
Just look at the phase on calendar or internet!......
....i prefer simple watch....
Thx anyway for sharing..
It’s tough to set this watch 🥱
I just look for a full moon and set the moon on my watch to that.
Still not understand
impossible to find
Hermes moon watch is good.
I just bought a JLC moon face. I’m
Never going to do this.
skip to 3:14
Hahaha Bosom!!
These are technically known as lycanthropic movements.
id rather not set soo complicated lol 😞
tldr: Check the internet.
What happened to this channel?
This is BS as man's fascination with time was from his desire to harness social and political power and to do so you need to being people together at the same time. So principally the church was the central timekeeper to early and developing man and still is to some cultures. Even the days of the week have been built around this control and central calling together of the people every Sunday.
