- In today's episode of Watch and Learn, we will be discussing moonphase watches. A moonphase watch simply tells you the current phase of the moon. Simple, right? But we will break it down and explain why the moon changes phase, and how a few different watches try to portray moonphase on the dial. We will eliminate some confusion that comes from "sun and moon" watches as well.
Lastly, we will set a Graf Zeppelin Moonphase watch from scratch, to show you the entire process. This watch uses a Ronda 706B moonphase and calendar movement. So these steps can be used to set any watch using this movement, or a variant thereof.

I've had my Zeppelin moonphase for several years, my wife bought it for me in Germany as a gift and I love it. Thanks to this video, it is now ready to be set for the next full moon for the first time ever since leaving the factory! I set it up for 2 days from now when the moon peaks, but left the crown out so it doesn't run. Day after tomorrow after 6pm all I have to do is push the crown back in and it's on. Such a beautiful watch, I almost hate wearing it too much because I don't want to scratch it up.

I've purchased exactly same watch as you 2 years ago, unfortunately it's not that reliable after all. After simple adjustment of time, it's stopped working - i mean ALL arrows were dead :(

I like the zeppelin ‘week of the year’ complication. It reminds me of my very first job because we used the week # for planning and it was always on our work calendars.
What a super helpful video. I don’t think I’d have worked out how to set the zeppelin in a hundred cycles of the moon were it not for your great tutorial.
This is a very much appreciated video. That said,, in other videos you've sloughed off replacing the battery in this Zeppelin moon phase watch as if it was no big thing. Well it is a big thing. Hints on selecting the right screws for battery hold-down, and hints on how easiest to replace the back would be very much appreciated.

I know that this is years after the fact, but what a good video. It is still as relevant today; especially the setting of the Zep. My gateway moon phase watch was a used beat up Raketa.
Didn't realise I wanted a moonphase until now! A lot of Northern European countries (particularly the Scandi's) refer to the weeks for business planning purposes. Kind of in the same way we'd use quarters, but more specific.

Hi Mark - You highlight the Zeppelin and the Red Star. The idea of a Eco-Drive/Moon Phase makes me all warm and fuzzy, and I am strongly considering adding a Citizen AP1050 to my collection in time for Feb 5th 2019 (Lunar New Years). I have seen some foreign language reviews, but if you are planning on doing any more videos on Moon Phase I would be really nice if you spent a little time covering this line of Japanese made watches. I bought that same Zeppelin watch and yes its a big task to set everything up but I do like that it's quartz so I don't have to worry about setting it up again for a very long time. It's a beautiful dress watch.

As usual, awesome Video Marc! It was nice seeing you at the Windup Fair, I was actually wearing the Zeppelin 7036-1 that day, purchased from LIW of course. When I first got the watch I erroneously set it forward a day or two to get to the correct time and then noticed my moon was a bit off. Man rotating the dial for 29 some odd days worth was a pain but worth a laugh.

Bless you for actually showing how to set the Zeppelin LZ129. All the other videos just talked about how to set it but no one actually demonstrated it. You should setup a way for people to donate to you. I'd throw you a few bucks for the assistance.

Can you help with a moon phase watch that progresses as a crescent then goes blank then progresses a whole moon. I don't have instructions. The seller thought it changed weekly. How should I set this one? Moon phase changes as the time changes no separate notch but there is a date notch. Also just how to read it. What does it mean when the crescent is showing?

I just bought this watch and it is beautiful but i am still having trouble setting it. I have done everything shown in this video but i cant get the day/date to sync up. They are off by 12 hr and i cannot figure out how to fix it. Has anyone else had this problem?
Nice video! You should try a small cordless drill, and put a small rubber hose (like a car's vacuum hose) into the chuck, and slip the hose over the crown of the watch to spin it. Go gentle so you don't break something, but it will be faster and less effort than turning it by hand.
how do you know what month it is on the zeppelin?
Hello, So I was setting my LZ129 moonphase watch And was able to set the Day,Date and Moonphase, but the Quickset for Week was not working, so I opened the Manual and it says the Block Period for setting the Week of the Year is Sunday-Monday, and Today is Monday and I unknowingly pushed the quickset 5-6 times, will it have damaged the Mechanism inside?...it was not moving the WeekHand, so will it set from tomorrow?(Tuesday)
It is fine. When it's blocked, it's just 'blocked'. You cannot break it unless you really push hard.
mark, regarding the Zeppelin. Since the watch knows the week of the year, does it know that current month is 28/30/31 days?

The setting of the moonphase seems so complicated on this overloaded Zeppelin watch! The Tissot Carson Premium Gent Moonphase has a more elegant way to set the moonphase and the date. (Of course the day of the week and the weak of the year is missing on the Tissot.) But I like it even simpler. To mention both are quartz watches (that's why you'd had to change the battery from time to time). The Tissot comes with an end of life battery indicator (the second hand moves in 4 seconds jumps)! 😍
When I go to set the day of the week nothing happens, I’m moving it from 11-1 like you are. Even when I moved it like 500 times to get the moon in the center the day didn’t move, is my watch faulty?

I just bought the Zeppelin Hindenburg Moonphase watch and this video has been useful in setting the watch. I just noticed that the date changes at 2am. Is this normal for this movement? Who else have this watch and can confirm this?
Does the Zeppelin watch have a black or a navy leather strap?
I got this watch and it hurts the tips of my fingers to turn the crown that many times. I almost want to get one of those watch crown winders just for this watch and any other moon watches that require this in the future. I almost couldn't go the full 28 days that my setting was off... I love the watch though, just glad this one is Quartz, because I could not do this every time that I put it away and it stopped...
What is the point of accuracy unless you wear and wind (or use auto winder) these watches every day?
That's why most moonphase watches, especially the less expensive ones, are quartz. They are more accurate too!
Does the mechanism of the watch get damaged if you try and set it up several times?

Are there more watches with a week number complication? It's an awesome complication, it comes up every now and then at work and then I have to check my phone calender to check what week it is or what week is it in three weeks and so on. Of course it's sophisticated to check the watch instead of the phone :)

Except omega moonphase co-axial master chronometer it’s accurate as long as you keep it running.
