  • Taking Our Motorhome To A Weighbridge: Over or Under?!?
    Weighbridge time.. before our first trip away in our Motorhome we take it to a local Weighbridge to find out how near our 3650kg maximum weight we actually are.
    Karina explains how to find out what yours should weigh, the axle limits and just exactly what we are carrying in our Motorhome.
    We paid £20 at the Weighbridge and whilst the result wasn’t too much of a surprise, we have had to explore our up-rating options.

    Hi Karina, great video, we had our last 3500kg motorhome uprated to 3850 no mods needed, just a paperwork mod, to be on the safeside.
    We recently changed that motorhome to a 5000kg tag axle, and have approximately 1000kg payload so much more peace of mind.
    I bet alot of people are over weight (motorhomes and caravans) and don't realise it, so great video especially at this time of year when we're all going away.
    Many thanks x

      Thank you for watching and your 5 tonne tag must be quite a motorhome 😍 Yes, I am glad we went before our first trip, we know what we weigh and what we can and cant take now. I hope you have had a great weekend 😊 Safe travels..

    Hi Karina. Thank you for an excellent video. It prompted me to take our campervan to the weigh bridge at the end of a 19 day trip to Scotland. It was as full as it was ever going to be and I filled the fuel tank and had half a tank of fresh water. Amazingly the front and rear axles both weighed 1720kg. It was weighed twice just to confirm that the weights were correct. When you watch some of the videos on CZcams it does make you wonder whether some of these motorhomes are overloaded especially when I compare them with how little we carry. It is something that seems to be overlooked but if your vehicle was weighed as part of an accident investigation at the very least your insurance may refuse cover.

      Well done on going.. that gives you peace of mind about your weight. Yes, if you’re over and it’s a serious collision you could be looking at more serious offences or your insurance not paying you out. I hope you had a great trip 😊👍

    That was a very informative video indeed, it has always been a concern regarding weights and what it all means ,you have explained it perfectly. Thanks 👍, not sure where our public weigh bridge is , but I'm going to get my husband to check it out just to be on the safe side for the both of us .

    That’s interesting. I bet a lot of people are close to the limit. Be good to see what happens next as the rear axle really limits what else you can put in. I wonder if motorhomes without a garage, mainly U.K. ones, don’t have as much of an issue. It would be good for other people to weigh theirs and put it on here to see. Great info as alway.

    Great Vlog I’m in the process of up plating my Motorhome, have to a weigh bridge before and been under 3500 kg, never really thought about axle weight we definitely have that checked out. I’ve spoken to many people that have never heard of payload, I do think the dealerships should talk about payload more not just trying to sell the van and how much cupboard space you have. Thank you once again

    Hi Karina, really interesting as always. We're just up plating our Motorhome. Rear axle is an issue due to tyre rating as well at the suspension, so we will be limited by them (can't get higher rated tyres without bigger wheels). It's a minefield! 😢

    • @HereWeTow
      @HereWeTow  Před rokem

      Thank you for watching Ian.. this is the avenue we have taken. Thankfully it was confirmed that our 16 inch wheels, tyres and brakes could go up without change. Sounds like for you to do this it would be at quite a cost if you have to change the wheels etc. Let me know how you get on with it. Have a great week and happy travels 😊

  • @harrythehymersholidays

    Hi Karina, we’ve just watched this again. As you know from the message I sent you, having had ours weighed, we are up plating from 3,500kg to 3,850kg. We were on our way back from a weekend away so, as with you, we had minimal clothing and basically no food. We had a quarter of a tank of fuel and a quarter of a tank of water. We didn’t have our awning, my bike or our outside chairs and were shocked to find we were only 40kg under our maximum. It would be impossible to do a 2 or 3 week trip without being way over. We have now weighed everything we have so can calculate each trip depending on what we take. Prior to this, we had an Autotrail, which had a smaller payload than we have now, so I hate to think how much we were over by. 😬 I agree that everyone should have their motorhome weighed. Suzie

      Well done on going to get weighed..it just goes to show. After our visit we linked in with Cara and have had air suspension fitted with them and uprated to 4000kg. There will be some vlogs about this process. Happy travels and glad you have got sorted too 😊

    Really useful content - it raises an issue I hadn't even considered as a completely newbie to motorhomes. Are there any implications for things like road tax from up plating?

    • @HereWeTow
      @HereWeTow  Před 6 měsíci

      Thank you for watching..yes, under 3500kg your Motorhome is classed as private light goods and pays £170, I believe the current rate is. Over 3.5t and it’s private heavy goods vehicle and pays £165. The date1 your vehicle was registered can also effect the rate but I won’t go in to that.. good question so thanks for asking. 😊👍

    When you get your e-bikes you’ll find they are quite heavy. To lessen that considerably is take of the batteries and store them up near you in the cab - those batteries are quite heavy. Depending on which bikes you chose they can normally be heavy old things, but definitely get those batteries off and up front.

    • @HereWeTow

    Very interesting vlog. It goes to prove what Andrew Ditton always says, payloads on caravans and motorhomes are nowhere near big enough. I don’t think a family of 4 could use that motorhome without uprating it.
    I’m scared to take our caravan to a weighbridge for that reason! If and when we change though, the new one would go straight there from the dealers so we knew what we had to play with.

    • @HereWeTow
      @HereWeTow  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching and yes, absolutely, it is a bit of an eye opener..but it is best to know where we are at weight wise I guess. It was reassuring we were under but very close. Enjoy your caravan and safe travels 😊

    Great video Karina, certainly makes you think about payload., i bet there is a lot of motorhomes out there that are over loaded as the margins do seem pretty tight tbh. If you and Jules had been carrying 2 extra adults with extra supplies, plus bikes equipment etc, you would be well over !!! Whats the law regarding this if you are stopped by the police, and TBH how can they even check ?? Take care, Trev Debz and Tyler

    • @HereWeTow
      @HereWeTow  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching, if stopped they can take you to a weigh bridge and if you are over you can receive a prohibition not to drive until you reduce the load and the offence does carry penalty points and a fine. If you dont have the licence category if you are over 3.5 tonnes then you have not a problem as you are driving otherwise in accordance with your licence and your insurance in likely to be invalidated at that that point too. It would depend on how the police decided to deal with the offence at the end of the day, but definitely best to be safe. I hope you have had a great weekend 😊

    We took our 2017 Adria Matrix SL , which like yours was originally MAM 3650kgs, but had been down plated to 3,500kgs by previous owner so new (since 01/01/1997) car (Cat B) UK licence holder could drive it, to a weighbridge. with 2 occupants, 1/2 tank of diesel, 25% water, zero waste water, empty toilet cartridge, a weeks worth of clothes each, 2 x bedding and towels, 2 x ebikes, table, chairs, minimal groceries. Our gross weight on the weighbridge was 3,720kgs! with 2100kgs on the rear. We definitely need to up-plate the gross weight and rear. It would be good to follow your story on this issue, because John (the owner) would need to do the same, and so would probably all other Matrix owners!!

    If you it something on the back axle it’s still spread through the front and back. Although the ratio will change according to the position. I imagine.

    • @HereWeTow

      I agree, payloads aren’t as much as you think, especially once you add extras. Manufacturers are keen to keep them at 3.5t due to the driving licence categories I think. I hope you have had a great weekend 😊

    don't you have transitional rule 96 in UK, or did it disappear with brexit. I'm old enough that I'm allowed to drive motorhomes heavier than 3.5 tonnes on my driving license here in Sweden.

    • @HereWeTow
      @HereWeTow  Před rokem +1

      If you passed before 1st January 1997 you had what we call “grandfather rights” and can drive up to 7.5 tonnes. I have that licence. If you passed after that you do not have the C1 category and are limited to 3.5 tonnes on the B category of your licence. You have to take a theory test, medical exam and driving lessons and a test to get the C1 category. I hope that answers your question 😊 Thank you for watching

    I like when you do reviews about different caravans. But I think, when you do not own your own motorhome, and are given one, you cannot give an honest view of where you stay and, more importantly, how your vehicle performs. Sorry for my negativity, but we can all comment on a freebie.
