I was writing a character once and I started to realize hang on this character is familiar... It was the MC's grandfather and then I realized holy crap this is my grandfather(for context I was trying to base the grandfather off of myself). Also most of the side characters are based off of me and my family and a lot of it is my family's dynamic lol. Also the MC's paternal grandmother and grandfather are based off of my grandma and papa. Being that the MCS grandmother is this rough tough old woman who is taking care of her husband who has dementia and trying to keep it a secret. The whole don't say anything about the writer's personal life from the book kind of doesn't apply here... The only original thing in my story is the main character and his storyline, most of the rest of the drama is stuff that's happened in my personal life, daddy issues and all, lol.
However I do have a lot of evil uncles in my story, but I don't have any bad relationships with my uncles, just absentee fathers.

My friend was telling me about a few books from this author she was reading and I told her I was sure the author had an abduction f*fish and she was like “whaaat? Nooo” And then described like three more plots that involved the FL being kidnapped by the ML and realized I was right.
Edit: also, as someone who (hobby) writes, the author will *always* insert something from their personal life, whether or not they realize it. It is impossible to write without putting any bias from their own life. This can be political views, personality traits, opinions on certain types of foods, etc... Although, you can’t often tell what those biases actually are. For example, you can have an author who bases one habit on something they do, one on something they’ve seen someone else do, one they think is cool, one they made up, et cetera, but you can never know which is which.
I will say, I’ve learned a lot about _myself_ from what I’ve written. Like, I’ll write something, and realize that I’d just given myself shitty therapy.

Edgar Allan Poe, despite writing some of the most iconic spooky stories and poems and his wife/cousin dying when she was young, he actually wasn’t a depressed dude. He was a party guy, constantly going out to have fun.
Edit: I’m sorry guys, I didn’t mean he wasn’t depressed, and I’m sorry if I came off as someone who looked down on or misunderstood those with depression. Trust me, I have lived with and survived depression before and I feel horrible that what I said came off as condescending or arrogant because that was not my intent. I’ve always had problems with words and I love when people help me. All I meant to say is that Edgar Allen Poe didn’t just sit in his house all day writing sad poems like what most people thought.

Maybe it's just a natural consequence of my philosophy of contrasting darkness with light in my storytelling. When I started writing (which is a very very slow work in progress) I realized all of my stories have very similar main characters and love interests.
Main character is parts of myself I have a love/hate relationship with, which the main character struggles with as well.
The love interest is the things about myself which I used to have and I wish I had nurtured into my personality, but due to a difficult upbringing I now feel like I have lost those traits forever, and wish I could get them back. The love interest also is the personality of my ideal partner obviously (at least to a certain degree, depending on how similar the main character is to myself).

I'm definitely having this with an author right now. I really enjoyed a lot of books by this author when I was a kid and I want to specify they aren't book specifically for kids or anything they were definitely from my mom's shelf they just happen to be interesting books with dragons in them that were family appropriate. I tried to go back and read some of them again recently. I'm starting to think he doesn't know what a woman is. He only seems to know how to write three women. He has this very distinct maiden mother crone situation, where every woman in it is either a pretty young girl who is very dateable and is looking for a man, a mother figure who is no longer specifically desirable but is usually powerful in some way smart and kind of annoying in a naggy way, or an old lady who is definitely not attractive and usually very annoying in an a naggy way but she's generally smart and very powerful.
And it just makes for really unpleasant read actually. Especially coupled with his thing where he seems to think that everyone getting into relationships is the ultimate goal and it's totally reasonable for it to happen at speeds a Hallmark movie couldn't match. These people are ready to get married in one week or less or your money back. Like throw themselves in front of a dragon for each other amounts of love. I have an entire shelf of my bookcase for these from when I inherited them from my mom during one of her moves and I'm trying to decide now if the shelf space would better serve for something else that I enjoy more or if I would feel bad getting rid of these considering how much I loved them before and how there are bits and pieces of them I still enjoy it's just not the characters.

If you're okay with YA fiction with less complex writing than The Stormlight Archives, but with no less emotional conveyance, try Tamora Pierce's books from her Emelan Universe. It's a trio of quartets, the Circle of Magic, The Circle Opens, and The Circle Reforged.
There are no actual fathers involved at all, but there are multiple fatherly figures. Tris (and the rest of the kids to varying degrees) has Nikolai Goldeye, Daja has Frostpine, and Sandry in particular (and the rest of the kids as well) has Duke Vedris. Sandry is related to Duke Vedris, but it is a relatively distant relationship (he's her great-uncle) but for every other relationship it's all found family and it's so sweet.

It's called market research, and if you don't have daddy issues of your own to draw from, friend-sourced is absolutely fine.

We write what fascinates us, but a character that fascinates us typically has some underlying psychological principle that inspires their conception. For instance, almost every heroic character i write dies, and usually dies alone, but that's bc i believe that great heroism is defined by great sacrifice.

    Franz Kafka.
If you ever heard about Kafkaesque, most of that comes down to Kafka having an unhealthy relationship with his dad.
He wrote a book that might as well have had the title "daddy issues".
The edition for german schools now is 100 pages a story about a guy turning into a bug and his dad being grossed out by it, and 50 pages is a letter in which he tells his father about his daddy issues

I dropped a story after one too many descriptions of young girls looking not just pretty but irresistibly attractive. At first it was the main characters younger aunt, then his wife, and on and on it emphasized how young and attractive they looked. The scene that had me have enough was when he found a soulmate who was really uncomfortably young and rather than having a good fun time it described how they were laying on bed together so tired after all the fun they had. It was disturbing and I haven't been able to forget it yet. I hope I can soon.

(He's Mormon, but he writes a lot of interesting cultures and religions, and even though he's a "fade to black" type when it comes to romance, the few times he's dabbled in writing romance it's been REALLY good *cough* Warbreaker romance was so cute.)

Funnily enough, there is a kind of literary analysis wherein you take into account the biography of the author when analyzing one of their works. My English teacher taught me and my classmates this while we were examining “A Day’s Wait” by Ernest Hemingway. She concluded that Schatz’s confusion of Fahrenheit with Celsius and him worrying about dying was based on Hemingway’s lack of knowledge in medicine when he was still working as a driver during a world war, which made him think that he was going to die when he was put in a hospital.

I also feel like it can go both ways. You might see it as every dad to be bad, but you might also instead only write about good relationships, to have a better world.
Disclaimer: I have a good relationship with my father. But, while I don't read, I build my world with the intent of making it... nicer.

My personal rule is that if a trope/characteristic appears in one book, it is probably just a choice. If it happens in 2 books, it might just be a favorite trope or something. If it happens in 3 or more books, they either have personal experience or a strange obsession 😂
Edit just in case, this obviously doesn't apply to a series/spinoff of a series, obviously a trait will appear multiple times if it is either a big part of the universe or a recurring character hahahaha
